View Full Version : Break the record?

SuperBattleDroid88

Just an idea I thought of....
Would you members like to break the record for the most members online in one night? The most members that were on was on the 10th of March and 377 members were online!
Just an idea... Something to do....
What date could we set for everyone to come on?
If this isn't a good idea or if this is a stupid thread then close it and tell me....
Remember... We don't have to.... JUST AN IDEA!!!
Thanks for reading this!!!! :)

Works for me. If SirSteve could send a email to everyone on that date,I would be there.

Good idea, I'd do it, I wouldn't like to say if it'll work or not, you'd have to be carefull what time you set it because of time differences around the world.

Just a thought.

Curious. :D

Perkins is a chain of family style restaurants around here, and ironically as I was leaving there last night they had a message on the marquee saying, "Key Lime Pie is back!" It struck me as odd when I read your post, I thought I was experiencing ESP or something. :crazed:

Merely old data, pay it no mind. :)

Sounds great, I'll be here. Just wondering though is that 9:11 PM Eastern, Central, Mountain or Pacific time? If it is Eastern then I need to be online at 7:11 PM (seems like it should be Eastern since all the attacks were on the East Coast).

I guess it could just be set at GMT time (SSG's standard time) but that would mean I'd have to be here at 2:11 PM. Boy this is getting complicated.

In order for the little thing to say 9:11 you will have to log on or log off at that time. If everybody just gets on-line at 5:00 or whenever you get home and just waits, THAT will be the record time, not 9:11. So at least some of us will have to hold off signing on until the exact right moment.

And that will be tough to synchronize since everybody's clocks are just a WEE bit off from one anothers. Hope it works. I'll be here! just wanted you guys to think about that possible snafu before it was too late.

Big Chewie Hey Big Chewie, what Webtv unit do you have? I have the plus unit and I have never had a problem with SSG. Oh and you should use the cookies so you don't have to log in every time you come on to SSG.

Hey Turbowars
I also have the plus but half the time it will only load the top half of a page, All the banner ads, but nothing below the usercp line.
I do use cookies and am pretty patient with it but sometimes it just wont load.
After about 10 minutes webtv disconnects for lack of use. Maybe its just my crappy unit, but I dont always have the problem.
Who knows.

187-Maul - I think your time it will be about 3:11pm, here in the UK will be about 2:11pm.

If think about it, one year ago the terrible events of 9/11 was broadcast on our news about that time. UK is about 5 hrs infront of New York time.

I am hoping to take the day off that day, so I will be online to hopefully make up the numbers.

I'm not going to be here. I'll be with my loved ones being grateful to be alive and remembering with quiet dignity. It would be more respectful for every one of us to not be online indulging in some kind of party atmosphere like the events of last Septemeber the eleventh didn't mean anything. Some people seem t be revelling in this like it's a happening. I'm disgusted quite frankly, but not surprised. I thought the tragedy meant more than just an excuse to wear a different colored ribbon and wave the national flag arrogantly. It's a global tragedy we're remembering or supposed to be remembering. Those who died were not all American, I'll be remembering the British who died and paying my respects with tears.

SirSteve,
Are there any archives of the postings from September 11, 2001? I recall spending the better part of my work day that day on Sir Steves Guide and posting many essays a spart of the process of coming to terms whith what transpired.

I was not the only one who took the time to write lengthy, poinent commentary on the situation. I thought that perhaps it would be nice, if possible, to have some kind of archival access to some of the better posts or even the entire run from that week or weeks.

Let us know if such a thing is possible.

I agree with Jargo, I will not participate in this either. I think it's sort of sick, to try to make a big deal out of a tragedy that affected alot of people. Using it as some sort of beacon to try to break a record on a message board is a slap in the face to the memory of the people that died that day. How much longer until people use it not as a day of rememberance, but as an excuse for a barbacue. :(

It's almost as bad as those people selling the commerative DVD's that talk about the attacks. Making money, or using the attacks as a promotion to get people on the boards in my opinion is a sadistic and sick way of remebering the people that were lost. I would rather spend a quiet night with my family, as Jargo said, thankful to be alive, and shedding a tear for those that aren't. :(

I have to agree with Jargo and JarJarBinks on this one. Sept 11th I will not be here. It is not another Holiday, you have fun on holidays, this is not a day to have fun! It is a day to remember those men and women who gave their lives, knowingly or not, to this tragic event. It is to remember those families who, for the 2nd year now, will not have loved ones at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Anyone who capitolizes(sp) on this sad day is no better the those who commited this act, IMHO!

This is not another day for Hallmark to cash in on. It is not another day for some new stuffed creature to be a mascot for. This is a day to be with the ones you love, and thank God that you are still here. Any one of us could have been on any of those planes that day. It could have been one of us! And you want to "celebrate" it by being here and "breaking a record"???? Shame on you. Those people did not die so you could break a record.

I will be at home with my wife and daughter that day, holding on to them and thanking my luck stars that they are still with me, and I with them.

Calm down WolfSpirit..and to a certain extent, Emperor Jargo, Jar Jar Binks and Dar' Argol. I don't belive that this was created to "celebrate" the tragic deaths of those who were victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11th. This was, as far as I know, an attempt by the members of this wonderful forum to remember and pay tribute to the many people whose lives were lost in their own way. It was not produced to "cash in" on their deaths, nor do I see it as "sadistic" or "sick." Just because you don't agree with this does not mean that you should bash it and label the people taking place in this as "no better the those who commited this act..." I sincerely believe that everyone involved, including myself, has the best intentions, and does not mean to capitalize on this event.

Well, the site is capatalizing on it. Just look at the big ole ad on the front page for it. It's nothing more then a slap in the face to the families that lost anyone on that tragic day. You are lucky I kept my yap shut for so long on this sickening display. Sure, maybe it started out with good intentions. But remeber, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

It would be no different then if a bar or club stuck out a sign, "Come in and remember September 11th." Because people aren't coming here to remeber what happened, you guys are coming here to break a record, instead of remembering the people that were lost. It's nothing more then a thinly veiled party, to break a record. Not a true rememberance of the tragic events. :(

Also note that Sir Steve's graphic for this, is in really poor taste. The flags are shown flying at full mast, when they should be shown at half mast marking the people that were lost. A small error, but one that speaks volumes about the fact that it is little more then a publicity stunt for the site.

I think everyone needs to calm down.

While this may not be the best way to show your "support" for our country, and the victims. Any patriotism, no matter how insignificant it may seem, is better than NO patriotism. Who are we to judge how others grieve or show their support?

I will be at work during this time period. I will also be logged into SSG. Odds are I won't be able to post, or participate much, because I will be busy. Odds are, I will be talking to some Barbie Doll, straight out of college, who doesn't know how to operate Windows, and has a 6 figure salary. Not exactly how I prefer to spend this day, but life must go on. I will show my support and grief in any way possible, which may be limited to this.

I doubt anyone plans this to be a "New Years Eve" type party, but what does it hurt? I don't see how this is a slap in the face to anyone. Someone tries to do something nice, to show support, and they are chastised. YOUR ACTIONS ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO HONOR THE VICTIMS. Not everyone has the ability to hold a candlelight vigil, and not everyone KNOWS how to place their anger and grief. I knowI don't.

So if you don't like the idea, then definately don't participate. But I don't like the idea of being considered any less of a patriot, because I choose to.

It's not like it is the "9/11 Midnight Madness Sale" at a Ford Dealer. What harm is there in making 9/11 the day that forumites logged on in unity, to show support? How is Steve going to profit from this?

The last thing we need to do is turn on each other, after all, that is one of their objectives.

If anyone has any problems with what I have said, I will be happy to discuss it in PM's. I am sure it doesn't make sense because I am rambling.

Anyway, Thanks!

And God Bless our country, our citizens, our allies, the victims, and all those who fight to protect us so vigilantly.

Though I'd have to say that the last few critical posts about this "gesture" make pretty good sense ... sure, perhaps there are better ways to mark the occasion than to be online at a Star Wars fan site ... I would agree that some of you are perhaps over reacting. To me this never seemed to be anything other than a simple gesture of solidarity and a kind of way for everyone to spend the time they probably would have been wasting on this site anyway (if the events of 9-11 had never happened) ... together, perhaps quietly reflecting on our collective good fortunes. I didn't see a Galidore Pop-up ad saying ... "hey be here on 9-11 to remember ... and then go buy Legos" ... so I'm not sure specifically how you would think that the site is capitalizing on this tragedy. I was struck by the fact that though it was not your ordinary way of paying tribute, at least it was some kind of gesture ... and I thought that in its own SSG kind of way it was nice.

Understandably some of you may think different. It's just that I don't understand the amount of venom that you've tossed out at the people that are behind this. In many ways, the most appropriate thing IS to go about your life as you would have otherwise, (which means you probably would be here bantering back and forth about everything and nothing) ... and then on a daily basis, remember those that died and how our lives REALLY used to be before 9-11.

Oh well, I'm sure I'll be SOMEwhere (maybe here, maybe not) on 9-11 ... thankfully.

.

Oh ... and welcome to the boards WolfSpirit ... it's so sad that your first post would have to be such a negative and emotional one.

Well, as with any kind of tribute or memorial, there are those who find what one group does offensive. It was the same for the Vietnam War Memorial Wall, it was considered to be extremely offensive to Vietnam Veterans because it was black and somewhat underground. However, that is now considered one of the most poigniant memorials ever created.

I'm not implying that this event will mirror the impact of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, but it is something. If nothing else, a way for some people to show that they haven't forgotten. Sorry it's not to some of your liking but that doesn't make it automatically offensive and disrespectful of the memories of the ones who died almost one year ago. Like those of you who would rather spend time with friends or family, well, what is this place? A collection of friends to some, maybe even a family to others. What could be more respectful of the events of 9/11 than meeting together and being thankful for that thing callled community?

Well, I apoligize if my comments were out of line. But this opinion has been festering a while, and as I read the posts that were more about breaking the record, then remebering I had to toss in my opinion. It's just like what Memorial Day turned into, an excuse to get a day off work.

Maybe I should have kept my yap shut, I do think it's in poor taste. I think it's fine that we band together in times of crisis for emotional support. But then it became commercialized, and more about breaking the record then actual about being together to remember. That is when I see it being in poor taste.

That's when it steps over that line of being somthing wonderful, and becomes somthing using the tragedy to accomplish somthing. My opinion still stands, especially about Sir Steve's ad for the event. Those flags should not be at full mast, not if it's truely somthing done as a memorial. :(

First off this started when somebody wanted to break the record for most meembers online.

(Good)

Someone said, "hey, why not on 9-11."

(Good)

So how can this be bad? The date was intentially used because it was easy to remember.

Is it sick? Only if we are using it to are own gain. Since the members itself has nothing to gain, then we are not using the date in a sick fashion.

I haven't seen the ad, seeing as I haven't visited the front page in months now.:sur: I guess I'll have to give it a look.

I wasn't implying that you weren't entitled to share your displeasure with this event if that is how you feel. Be honest and say what you really think.

This whole thing started as a simple suggestion by SBD88 and kind of snowballed from there. I'm sure SBD88 had only the best of intentions, since from what I know, he doesn't profit in the slightest by how many people are logged on to SSG at any given time.

So since SBD88 is my friend I will try to be here to help support his memorial. Since you are also my friend JJB I will respect your wish to take no part in this (same for Jargo and Dar).

Frankly BigB, it didn't bother me as much when it was the people on the forums that wanted to do it as a tribute to the memories of the people that died. It bothered me more when Sir Steve popped his head in and decided to make it commercialized. Maybe a better idea would have been to shut the forums down and put up page, stating that we were having a day of silence in rememberance?

But now, a majority of the posts are about only breaking the record. Which isn't what this should be about. If you want the community to come together in times of crisis, or as a rememberance, why make it a big deal that it has to beat some preset number of users. That is the major problem I can see, that and the flags at full mast. :)

if you look at the first page of this thread, SBD88 suggested breaking the record, and QLD suggested sept. 11... it has always been about breaking the record from the beginning.

as for the flags, i think they have been at half mast for long enough. it's time we flew them high again, to show those that would try to destroy our way of life that we hold our heads and our flags high. that we defy their attacks. that they can destroy buildings and lives, but not our spirits.

i don't think this is commercial at all. no one is profiting from this. i think sirsteve's support of this idea is great. i, too, respect your decisions to not participate, but alternately, please respect other's decisions TO participate. this is also what makes this nation great. respecting our differences.

plus, being online for a minute at 9:11 on 9/11 doesn't mean that's ALL i'll do to remember the day.

my father would've been dead if he hadn't have been late for work. i see nothing wrong with this tribute.

Beast
09-03-2002, 01:47 AM
Yes, I saw that. But the moment it became about honoring the loss, the idea of breaking the record should have been secondary to honoring the dead and remebering what happened on that tragic day.

I see what you mean about the flags, but if this is ment to be a tribute, the flags should not be at full mast. There is specific rules as to how the flags should be flown for things like this. Half mast is the rule, and I think it should be respected.

Sir Steve does profit from it, increased traffic means increased revenue from his advertisers. Especially with the Glitch ad on the front page. Not to mention the increased traffic clicking on his advertisers as well. But that is regardless.

I'll do whatever you guys want... I'll even shut the site down for the entire day if that's what you think we should do! I am actually liking that more. We should be with friends and family. I posted the image here weeks before it went on the home page to get your opinions. You want half mast? I opted for flags instead of pictures of the WTC. I am doing this for you guys. We have nothing to gain. We are not turning this into a commercial thing at all! As I have always said, I cannot win no matter what I do...

We don't make a make money (profit is not the correct word as more goes out than comes in) each time a banner is clicked. Our advertisers pay for an amount of time to advertise, not pay per click. You click on it or not, they pay the same.

And yes, bandwidth will be very high if we continue with this.

Steve I appluad you for your efforts. IF you want to shut the site down that's an option as well. Maybe leave this to a vote.

Whether or not this started out as a record breaking thing or not, if you want to show your support and patriotism and feel this is is the way you want to do it. DO IT!

As a veteran (I served respetfully in the Navy from 1989-1993 and was in Desert Shield/Storm), I feel proud that my fellow SW fans would even think to show some form of solidarity on this day.

Yes, we should all have a time of quiet reflection for the events that happened but we should also celebrate the heroes actions and the lives of the victims.

I will not be able to be here at 9:11 pm but will be here in the a.m. and will keep my computer logged in to SSG for 9:11 p.m.

For some people this may be trivializing the events for others it may be their only way of showing support, in any event, if you don't want to participate don't. Please do not knock anyone else for their chosen way of showing support.

I thought about taking the day off from work to refelct but have decided against it. WE MUST continue our lives as normal as possible, this includes trying to break records. Just because it is NOW being done in commemorating an awful day in our history doesn't mean it's a bad of distasteful thing. In fact, it show's our resolve as Americans (and the rest of our esteemed brethren around the world) to continue our lives, not letting them WHO ARE TRULY THE MOST WRETCHED HIVE OF SCUM AND VILLIANY win.

Besides remaining logged in to SSG, I will be going to a prayer vigil (which is a rare thing for me) for my lunch, fasting for the whole day (which if you guys knew me on a personal level you would know how much that means for me) and tuning in to watch the news and reflect on this day.

QUIT complaining. We should all be thankful for what we have, our lives, and our freedoms.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL my fellow fans and brothers (and sisters), GOD BLESS AMERICA and THE WORLD!

Steve, I like the idea of locking out everyone from posting for 5 minutes, or for a certain period of time, as a "moment" of silence to reflect and remember.

Just a thought. I think the graphic is fine. If you want to change it to half mast, that's great! If you want to change it to fireman, police officers, wtc, all of that is fine.

I like the "lock-out" idea alot better myself also. Like I said, I don't see a problem with coming together as a community to stand strong against the "scum and villany". The problem was when it became about the record, that's all. Again, sorry for feeling passionate about somthing. And yes, Sir Steve. I think that the flags at half mast, would be more proper since this is a memorial type of thing. :)

I think the lock out is a brilliant idea :), but only for 9 minutes and 11 seconds??? I know some people may think it's the right length, but it won't really mean anything to those who would be in bed at that time. With the record thing people would make an effort to stay up to do it, but if they know it's going to be closed at 3am in the morning for only 10 minutes then they're not going to stay up to remember it with the forum. Maybe a 9 hour and 11 minutes period, then most people would be locked out in memory of it, and it would also show on the forums when there's a big gap of no posts.

I think the best thing you could do is simply acknowledge the day, and point out that is a day of reflection and mourning for the people of America.

I don't really see the need for a lockout of a message board that caters to an international group of people.

I was just expressing stuff in my first post because I'd just watched another harrowing documentary about 9/11. I was just awash with emotion. I'm not a very emotional person normally. Nothing phases me. But this - this is ... different. This means more to me than all the things I've ever experienced. All the sights I've seen.
