You named your kid Hayden? That's awesome!

Just don't tell stillakid or your child will face ridicule. ;)
I was SO close to having my wife talked into naming him Anakin but she ,being the voice of reason, talked me off the edge. Hayden was our compromise.

But just to spite her, I call our daughter "Hannah-kin".

How fast does the tank go? Is there a speedometer in it, like in a car? 0-60mph in ?? seconds?

They're big, so they look like they'd be slow, but I know they're not.

Is it scary to be such a large target for fast and mobile terrorists with portable anti-tank missle launchers (shoulder mounted rockets etc?) Is the machine pretty impervious to that kind of firepower or does it scare you and the crew you ride with? I'm sure you do good with bunker-busting and you're protected from small arms fire, but there's really no safe way to be a soldier is there? If they decomissioned your tank and told you to run around with a missle launcher of your own, some guy with a handgun could take you down - plus you'd probably only be able to carry one or two big rounds unless they figure how to make nukes you can carry in your pockets - else why are tank shells so big? You could add a rocket launcher to an ATV and it might be faster and harder to hit. (cover it and the driver with armor against small-arms fire though). But I'm watching all these war movies where they used flame throwers to light tank crews on fire and it doesn't inspire confidence. The same flame carriers get shot though, and their tanks explode. The best way to win a war is to not fight one I guess. That's really too bad because there's glory in a victory and everyone likes to have that.

In the first Iraq war we only lost 20 or so tanks due to battle damage. The armor is quite thick and they also have the British invented Chobham armor on it. It's basically explosives mounted on teh outside of the tank that explode the ordinance (shaped charges mostly) prematurely so they lose most of there effectiveness. But that's all I know so I'll let the person that actually works in them finish.

First it is freakin awsome to be in such a large vehicle. They can go from 0 to 20 in four seconds. Thats dang fast for a seventy two ton vehicle. They can go about 65 but have a governor on them that keeps em at around 45. There is a combat overide that can be engaged at kicks it up to 70, but that is a last resort. since you can't steer it. Also it destroys the transmission completley. Pretty much point in the way you want to go and haul arse out of there. At forty five mph it can stop in six feet. Only problem is evry one in the turet usually gets banged up pretty good. Never make you driver mad. As far as the armor goes, I was in a tank that got hit eight times with RPG's. Burned our personal gear on the outside up, but we were safe. Tankers are the most feared people of the battlefield, and we eat that up.

Oh and I am an E-6 Staff Sergeant

Tycho
08-25-2006, 01:36 AM
Wow. That is one of the most interesting posts I've ever read on SSG. It's like talking to a real life hero. We're on a Star WARS site and we actually are talking to someone who's really been shot at. My father was too, (a Navy Commander of a destroyer involved in some very serious action) but let's just say there wasn't very good father-son communication going on most of the time when he was alive. I was never healthy enough to be accepted in any of the services, as an officer candidate nor enlisted. I tried every branch except the Army I think. I went the furthest with trying to be in the Marines. Once my physical review was done, they told me what each of the other services said: not with a major surgery in my past (I had my whole chest opened up as an 11 year old kid) and now with my kidney disease and the aneurysm last summer (plus I'm older anyway), forget it.

It's no secret that I don't rather like Bush, nor many Republican politicians for that matter, but I think supporting and admiring our troops is an entirely different thing. We'll be rid of this CIC in 2 more years (time doesn't pass quickly enough). Whoever leads our nation must fund our military and support its strength. I'm sick of Democrats being accused of being weak on the military. They don't have military-industrial corporate sponsors often enough. That's what the issue is. Northrop-Grumann, Haliburton, etc. buys Republican politicians. I think it's time that Democrats that know what they're doing with the military, perhaps Clark, and Kerry was probably good in that area, ought to get up there. On the other side, John McCain knows what he is doing also. Bush might, but he's lied to the American people and who knows what else. I'm so far into Rancor Pit territory that I better stop right now. Sorry about that.

My point I wanted to make was that I admire ChrisC's service and wish I could have contributed as much to my country.

(I'm a veteran of Yavin from 1977) But it would be just what the military wants: to pay me for my kidney transplant and the months I'll need in sickbay following it. Right now I feel lucky to be alive in my country and it's well past time to think about serving it (except of course in politics, which I've done at the local level and will do again if I ever get the chance).

Top speed 45mph. It has a governor that keeps us from blowing up the jet engine it runs off of. There is a combat override that will shoot it up to 65 -70 but lets hope we never have to use it! The tank will stop in six feet at 45 mph!

As for Haydakin in the Cup, I've already "scouted" the joint and as long as we distract the bored college student taking pictures of people with the Cup for $10 (even though you can walk right up and do it yourself for free!) we're golden.

It's called a "timer" and I hit the button after setting the camera on a shelf, and wait 10 seconds until the camera takes the picture. I like taking pictures because as I get older, they help me remember the many stages of my life. I still want to get my hands on the pictures my mom had for years of my in my early youth.

I have new pictures of myself and family taken just yesterday at my cousin's wedding.

There's even a shot of me and my nemesis - my "evil" Uncle who hates my Star Wars collection! (the biggest Republican of the family!!! Grrrrr). Just kidding - I love my small family - just loathe some members' politics.

I swear I was just going to Toshe Station to pick up some power converters (that will change the balance of power in the United States Congress in approximately 24 hours!)

Well, my cousin Gloria made a super-beautiful bride. She's like my sister and my closest relative as she also lives in San Diego.

Enjoy the pics and the buzzcut I've worn for about the past year since I've been out of the hospital (it's easier and more comfortable - though I've contemplated growing my hair long and wearing a nearly trimmed beard - sort of the AOTC Obi-Wan Kenobi look).

Yes, I didn't explain well...there are two hangars side by side in Bedfordshire. One was for the blimp on our project. The other was refitted by Warner Bros. as a soundstage. Evidently, Batman 2 is shooting there and a whole other film also has sets built too. The hangars are mighty large. Probably could have put 4 blimps in one hangar without too much effort.

This is a gal I met about two months ago. I met her on Yahoo Personals, and it seems to be going quite well. She is working late at Sears tonight, so I made her a set of keys so she can let herself in as I have an early workday tomorrow. This one is over every night.

The one that was staying over once a month was just a friend, and she was married. I behaved like a gentleman when she stayed the night, and when I told her I was dating, she made arrangements elsewhere as not to ruin something before it had a chance to start.

The hair has about another 2 1/2 inches to go, or 10 inches total before I can donate it.

Some of you know, that my wife was pregnant. She was due January 13th. This past Thursday, we went for her 35 week check-up, and found out she was 3cm dilated, and was to stop working immediately, and be on complete bedrest. We were both shocked, but ok with it (like we had a choice). Friday, I went to work, and she spent the day at home throwing up everything she tried to eat, along with some pretty terrible back pain. She made it through the night after some tylenol, but woke up around 8am Saturday felling pretty crappy. We called the hospital, and they said come in and get a check-up. We went in and found out she was now 4-5cm dilated, and the back pain was contractions due to her being in LABOR! She was admitted around 11am. Her OB/GYN came in and said they would give her a few shots to slow the contractions, but could only give her the meds 4 times to slow things down, after that, it was baby time, ready or not. By 8pm Saturday, she was 9cm dilated, so they broke her water. Around 10:50pm, she was 10cm and they had her start pushing. 11:07pm, Delaney Jordan was born, 5 lbs 6oz and 19 1/2 in long, and seemed healthy as can be. Sunday was a busy day, with tests and usualy baby stuff, but something was wrong. Delaney was throwing up green fluid, which the Drs. *thought* was meconium (I'll spare you what that is..). The problem was, it was ALOT....alot more than any normal baby should be spitting up. They took Delaney for some x-rays, and came back to tell us there looked to be a "blockage" in her small intestines. We freaked out, but they assured us it may be nothing of great concern, possibly poop that hadn't quite made it down the pipes yet. Just to be safe, they sent the x-rays to Winnie Palmer Children's Hospital in Orlando. They called over to our hospital, and said we are sending an ambulance right away, she may need surgery! My wife about had a nervous breakdown on the spot, since our newborn was being taken away less than 24 hours after she was born. My wife's Ob-Gyn came to check her, and said she was Ok to leave and go with the baby. Around midnight, we were told Delaney had what looked like a Duodenal atresia and would need surgery. We both broke down at that point. Not able to do anything but cry, we decided to head home and prepare to spend the next few *days* at the hospital. We went back this morning, and was told Delaney was waiting to go into surgery, we just had to sign some consent forms and she'd be on her way. Around noon, Delaney went in for her procedure, and around 3pm the Surgeon came out and told us all went well. They had to rearrange some of her small intestines, remove a small portion that had died due to lack of blood, and took out her appendix, because the procedure involved rotating her intestines and her appendix was now on the left rather than right, so to avoid future complications, they removed it while they were in there. Needless to say, we've had a ROUGH 48 hours or so, and are just happy she's still alive and seems to be doing well on her way to recovery. I'll be off work for at least 2 weeks to help my wife and visit Delaney, my wife will be off for 6 weeks. If Delaney responds well to the surgery she MAY be home in 2 weeks, but they said don't be upset if it turns into 4-6 weeks...everything depends on how strong she is now.
I've made alot of friends on here, and just thought I'd pass everything along to you guys and gals that know me here and in the "real" world.

Here are a few pics of Delaney before all the chaos and a few after surgery.

Wow, intense stuff there DarthChuck. It reminded me of when my son was only a few weeks old, he looked quiet, but his mother said there was something wrong. We took his temerature and it was unusually high like around 102 or 103. We ran him to the hospital and they did some tests and he had to have an IV put in his arm, and I got to hold his arm as he cried. The dumb doctor told us, it was most likely Spinal Meningitus (sp?). I can't remember what it ended up being, but it was an exhausting couple of days in the hospital.

Good luck, and I hope your doctors don't leave you as panic stricken as I was.

I like No. 1 as well. You're all smiling and into it. I'm betting it was the first picture taken, too. That's usually the most genuine in a set. You know, before the "didn't we just take this picture?" look. ;)

Besides, No.1 makes you all look close like a family. The others center the tree. It's a nice tree, but that's not what makes YOUR picture special.

Thanks, I just submitted an order through Wal-Mart.com for 80 cards. I hope it's enough. I went with #1! Thanks again for your votes.

I love this digital camera technology. I took the pictures this afternoon, uploaded them to my computer, cropped the unwanted background, and ordered the cards all without leaving my home! Fantastic!

By the way Caesar, my son isn't a big Star Wars fan. He was until he came to live with me, then he looked at my collection and said it was "overkill". He does enjoy Star Wars, just not as much as his old man.

Haha. Sometimes kids want to be as different from their parents as possible these days.

Frett (the following is a joke):

Use drugs in front of him - he'll stay away from them and remain drug free.

Play video games constantly - he'll read books and write literature.

Lay on your couch and eat pizza - he'll become a fitness junky and go out jogging

I use reverse psychology with my cats: I bought them a scratching post / tree thingy and yell at them "No! No!" whenever I see them going for it. Turns out it is their favorite thing to do, now.

paintball always makes me think of laserquest. god i loved that. mostly coz it didn't hurt and i got to sneak round in the dark and pretend to be a crack shot sniper. big fun though. do they still have laserquest anywhere anymore? it seems to have died a death here.

Tycho
01-03-2007, 04:06 PM
They called it Lasertag and I remember playing at different locations. Sometimes guys had clubs that provided a lot of equipment. Other places charged a fee and had an obstacle course through different environments.

I prefer paintball however, because you seriously know when you get shot and you also had to gauge your ammunition and act accordingly with it - such as timing, ranging, and conserving cover-fire etc. I used to always worry about how much ammo I was expending and if I maintained ranging correctly when I used cover fire to protect my own or my squadmates' advances. It definitely had a real combat feel. The actual military uses paintball practices to simulate combat situations. I think it's as real as non-lethal gun combat gets.

Jargo
01-03-2007, 04:37 PM
yeah well i don't approve of real guns. I'll keep my reasons to myself though. it's precisely the fun aspect and non combat aspect of the laserquest experience i liked. I liked that i could go in there with a bunch of kids and have a cool time running around playing a game. not to mention it's the closest i'm likely to get to being a sci-fi action hero.

and unfortunately as i've experienced paintballers are not kind to the environment even if the paint is biodegradable paintballers tend to mess up the place and trash the plantlife. but i've no objection to urban paintballing. derelict warehouse type environment. I just hate seeing woodland getting smashed up.

anyway, enough of this it's a picture thread.

RooJay

We've still got several Q-Zar (lasertag) locations here in the bay area, though they don't seem to get nearly as many customers as they did about ten years ago.
If it makes you feel any better Daddypants, the paintball field I go to has pretty strict rules about not damaging the natural landscaping and not littering. In fact, I'm pretty sure the people who run the place have done very little, if anything to change the natural layout and foliage of the field. It all looks pretty natural, with a few manmade barriers added in spots that were already clear of foliage. That's actually the main reason I like playing there as opposed to any of the other fields around - it looks like a real place, as opposed to something designed.

Jargo

we have a wooded area local to us that some dude wanted to use for paintballing, he got his *** handed to him though because it was discovered the last place he used got trashed completely. Plus these woods have only just recovered from abuse by BMX yahoos in the 1980's. I'm not a zealous conservationist by any means but some of those guys see a nice healthy wooded area and then want to run 4x4's over it and paintball teams and god knows what else and there are plenty of spaces out there much more suitable, less delicate and exactly the sort of place you can trash and it won't matter. like i mentioned, abandoned factories and warehouses make ideal locations. even an old moored ship.
not having a go at you Roojay in any way. was just a general moan about 'some' inconsiderate people.

Anyway, latest picture. forgive me looking rough. had to use the webcam coz i had no charged batteries for the camera. the webcam hates me but the camera loves me.

Sadly, I get that kind of thing a lot. This is the first time I've heard Mark McKinney, however. barry i hate you and your copious locks lol i shall never be able to grow my hair again because I'm balding....

and slick. shhhhhhhhhhhh...........

Tycho
01-05-2007, 05:02 PM
I'm sorry you're balding. I wear my hair really short now because it's easier to deal with - when I was in the hospital lying down most of the time, the weight of my head was pulling my own hair out. So now, every 10 days, I have a military cut done down to nearly 1/4 of an inch (you guys have seen recent pictures). Plus I like one of the girls that cuts my hair and it's an excuse to see her, hehe.*

But I'm sort of blonde and in the wrong light, my fairer hair looks like it's missing and that I have bald spots too.

But remember this: chicks think Patrick Stewart is sexy!

*Meanwhile, I don't have the energy or patience to go out to bars and clubs much at all. I only used to go to meet women, and was only successful on the nights when I could break out of my comfort zone and be really obnoxious (seriously - and that's a whole 'nother story). So I find I'm happiest when I'm doing what I really want to be doing (or need to be doing) and I try to pick up women when the urge finally overpowers me and I'm out running my errands or hunting Star Wars figures, or even at the doctor's.

So the other day I was victimized by an attractive homicidal lady who was bent on robbing me. As she pointed her gun at me and told me to hand her my wallet, I asked, "Do you think after this you'd like to go and get a cup of coffee with me and then perhaps come back to my place?" :D

Jargo
01-05-2007, 05:17 PM
I don't mind the receding hair. my elder brother was bald at 18 and my younger brother has a huge bald patch. mines receding in a really slow way at the front. but as I have a zero crop mostly it hardly shows.
And it is easy to manage. saves on the cost of hair products and saves on time. The last time i grew my hair to se what it looked like i just ended up being annoyed with it.
And with longer hair I look older.
People do like to run their hands over a cropped head though. which is fine with me as it's a big erogenous zone lol no not really i just like having my head tickled. I kind of melt visibly. Guess you could say it's my achilles heel.

When the gorillas were throwing their poo at the tourists, I shouted encouragement though, like:

Good shot there Capt S.

I too play GH. Both of them. How good are you? For the first one, I've got 5 stars on all of the easy with 5 perfects (I'd have more but easy is just too damn easy), I've got 5 stars on all of the med, all but 2 have 5 stars on hard and have completed expert, just haven't got all 5 stars. On GH II I have 5 stars and 3 perfect on easy, 5 stars on all of med, all but 4 songs have 5 stars on hard and am about a third of the way through expert (no 5 stars yet).

I sit and play this for an hour or two at a time. TIme goes by fast then. What's cool is that I find afterwards, I'm playing my bass better. Strange. But hey if it works.

Oh and that reminds me, GHII is so much better than the original, now that you can play the bass or rythm parts in the co-op mode. Lots of fun.

On GH II I have 5 stars and 3 perfect on easy, 5 stars on all of med, all but 4 songs have 5 stars on hard and am about a third of the way through expert (no 5 stars yet). We're pretty much in the same boat. On the first GH, I've got all 5 starred on easy and medium, all but 2 five starred on hard ("Cowboys from Hell" and "Bark at the Moon" are impossible to 5 star!). I've got mostly 5 stars on expert, but can't even complete "Cowboys..." on expert. As far as GH 2, I haven't really had the time to really get into it. I've beaten every song on hard with about half of them 5 starred. I've only played a handful of songs on both easy and medium because, as you said, it's pretty boring. I was buzzing along pretty good on expert until I got to "Rock This Town". I got stuck and haven't really had the time the last couple weeks to pick it back up. I'll get to it eventually.

Oh and that reminds me, GHII is so much better than the original, now that you can play the bass or rythm parts in the co-op mode. Lots of fun. That's pretty fun. "Co-op" mode is pretty sweet. It's nice to sit back and play bass or rhythm after playing somethig like "Institutionalized"! Have you played rhythm on "Jessica" yet? I swear that's harder than playing lead on that song.
