Well, it used to be a Compaq Presario running 533mhz, 30 gig hd, with a WinTV tuner board, but I was VERY dissatisfied with it's DVD playback - always choppy - I upgraded to 512 megs of ram, but that didn't really help too much, so I basically rebuilt the entire thing.

Now it's running (on a brand new MB...) 1.1ghz AMD Athlon XP, still 512 megs ram, (upgradable to 1 gig *drool*) with the Soundblaster SBLive! 5.1 (soon i want to get a 5.1 speaker system, right now i have the old Cambridge Soundworks 3 speaker set - still no slouch!) and an old 2gen video card, because with that amount of processing, graphics are awesome! the dvd playback is finally what i want it to be...

Still, in the "it's never enough" category, I want to build my own computer centered around a dual Athlon MP 1.67ghz (or whatever is the highest end AMD makes then...) MB, with the new nVidia Personal Cinema - it's like putting a TiVo in your computer, coupled with crazy fast graphics and one user interface for TV and DVD!!! ROCK!!! All that will be stuffed into the deluxe chrome full tower from www.pcpowerandcooling.com check it out under "enclosures" it looks awesome!!!

Um a box that hums and makes crunchy noises, A big TV that gets no TV shows, A thing with buttons that have letters, numbers and symbols on. A thing on the end of a wire that you click to make stuff happen, A big bass speaker and four little treble speakers, Some sound stuff and graphics stuff and a modem telephoney internetty thingy. :D

Mine is quite outdated now. had it built to my specifications a while back. like two years ago. I think it's an AMD P3 1ghz processor. There's 384mb SDRAM, 40gb hard drive,
120mb floppy drive, CREATIVE 1024 LIVE! sound card and surround speakers, Geforce 3 graphics card that's probably just poxy at 32 mb. There's a CDRW drive in there somewhere that I never use, 19 inch monitor cheap but well tasty. cheapo TRUST keyboard and mouse, EPSON STYLUS SCAN 2500 printer scanner copier all in one, which makes it the loveliest system going I think. I don't care for anything more right now. What i got does me fine. And anyway, it's not the size that counts, it's how you use it. :p

32 Meg GeForce 2 MX-200 PCI *cries*

Here's what I want, and I will eventually have:
AMD XP 2100+ (Or T-bread)
512 DDR-RAM
two 80 Gb 7,200 HD's
GeForce 4 Ti
Flat-screen version of the HP mx70 moniter

Well, I'd always stick with nVidia. As for ATI, it really depends on what you're looking for in a video card. The Radeon 8500 has compatibility issues with virtually every game on the market, and ATI has terrible driver support. The only reason ATI is thriving is because John Carmack is saying it'll be the best card to run Doom 3 when it comes out--although nvidia will be just fine! :D

What the hell do you want a PC for games for? Go get a gaming console ya cheapskate! PC's are for work and internet and porn downloads, proper usage. DVD and games are for the TV entertainment center. GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE!!!!!!!! Actually I bought my PC to be a big calculator. But as I have no idea what the numbers I'm looking at mean I decided to go for the graphical slant and mainly use the PC for graphics manipulation. Storing large amounts of archived images. Playing funky moozik while I work. Word processing. I don't need a wizzy PC for what i actually use it for but the extra oomph in the processor department allows me to work at the speed I want to. I can think of nothing worse than having to sit and wait for a document to save. I need to click save and have it happen instantaneously. If I'm working on a massive image file and want to change the whole image in some way I want it to happen yesterday. Currently it's only happening this morning. I need more processing power so i can get up to speed. That's all I want for my PC right now. Perhaps a slave hard drive as well. But i don't need a huge hard drive when compression will clear space for me. Wiping the hard drive deleted files helps too. leaving a fresh clean drive with lots of room to manouvre. :)

Consoles are solely for gaming, yes, but they suck! Consoles are better for driving games and fighting games,...but first-person shooters will never be good on consoles. The controls are disgusting, textures are a blurry mess, resolution on a TV is laughably lower than on a monitor...the list goes on!
I'd say that it takes a lesser degree of intelligence to play console games than PC games, and while that's true, I'd better keep my mouth shut or else Jar Jar will come in here and once again think that I'm boasting.

Nope, I don't agree with that... The idea of "convergence" is already happening. First off, those "game consoles" you are referring to, I assume being PS2, gambcube and X-box, are all just fancily done up computers that are optimized for gaming. Secondly, most of those "entertainment centers" will start to encorporate more and more computerized components. Do you consider a TiVo a computer, or an entertainment center component? I see it as neither, or maybe both. Yeah, probably both. Eventually, we will do everything through the computer - hell, I almost already do! My computer is my TV, stereo, DVD player, internet appliance, and design studio.

Eventually, everything media-wise will come through a central computer, probably one built into the house! Houses will have a central hub, and from there the speakers in you bathroom can get music, your plasma screen in the den can get all 1000 channels, and your child's room can have the 24 hr XM lullabye channel. Some sort of user interface in the wall of each room will take care of tuning in, and maybe a central hub could control all the systems in the house, perhaps if you want to blast your favorite song throughout every room in the house when everyone else is away! Can you tell, I love technology?

Now, if only we had talking sentient cars...

It does take a lesser degree of intelligence to use a console. Console games never receive patches or updates; there is no maintenance to be done; you don't need to worry about things like hard drive space.

So what you're saying, if I understand correctly, that because consoles require no further action than putting in the game and turning it on, these people are stupid.

So anybody who uses a computer to play games is naturally smarter because they have to worry about space and game requirements.

Any console players out there feel insulted?

DeadEye

I'm not saying that because the consoles require few things that their owners are stupid--I'm simply saying that you don't need to be as smart to use a console effectively!

Darth Nihilus
07-18-2002, 12:01 PM
Perhaps some re-wording Deadeye?:)

A console requires significantly less maintenance than a PC. That's a statement I can agree with.

I prefer console gaming over PC gaming for a number of reasons: a) Maintenance. I like gaming like my prophylactics, 'one size fits all'. b) System's life cycle. PC's need to be upgraded at least every two years to maximise a game's attributes whereas the life cycle of a console is about 5 years. I'd rather spend the upgrade money on buying more games. c) Comfort. I can't sit too long in front of my computer without feeling restless or slightly nauseous. With my console I can lay back on my bed or sit back.

But - So far there's been no RTS' or FPS' on consoles that have matched their PC cousins.

How about we say that using a console does not require as much effort as using a PC?

I like using my PC for gaming but I gotta admit it's nice having a console to play games.
It's nice not to have to worry about system requirements when buying a game.

I play games on my PC, but I much prefer to play them on consoles. I find patches are annoying. Because it just gives the developers the OK to release an unfinished product with little testing. Most patches are fixing problems, problems that usually are non-existant on consoles.

Plus, I think Halo, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark are some of the best FPS experiences I have ever had. And they are console games. I find the mouse/keyboard controls a little un-friendly. It gives you more options, but I only have to hands with 10 fingers. I can only press so many things at once, and pay attention to the games.

Overall, I still believe that the PC game market is still way behind the console market. Sure there are a few things they do much better, such as FPS for the most part, and strategy, but for racing, fighting, adventure, and sports games, consoles are king.

I do agree that using a PC to play games requires a little more knowlege ( I say knowledge rather than intelligence, because I see plently of unintelligent people doing it). And that is the attraction, because many people, do not enjoy having to worry about installations and compatibility problems. When you buy a console game, barring a manufacturing issue, the game WILL work. It is always a guessing game with PC games. Especially for the average citizen.

I think it is moronic for PC gamers to criticize console gamers, and vice-versa. Both have extremely good qualities.

DeadEye

I didn't intend to start a war here. Perhaps I was a tad provocative and some of you missed the sardonic tone in my post. I play neither console nor PC games. I just have no interest in games of any nature other than games of the mind.
Entertainment centers of the future will of course contain all the wonderful technologies we have now as seperates in one huge all encompassing conglomerated package. These new fangled gamer station seat thingies with a big comfy seat positioned to optimise the view of the screen and allow for lumbar comfort, with the console controls at your fingertips and all the bits and pieces attached are fine, but ultimately the gamer station seats are just fancy schmancy smarty pants gimmicks. The real breakthrough will come when systems are fully integrated with one drive for all removable media which will eventually be simple sticks not CD, there'll be a voice activated computer brain with independent 'thought' to save on user time and a combined monitor gaming screen and TV screen, Music center inclusive with all the surround being of THX digital surround quality. All this will be served by terrabyte processors and there will be humongous hard drive capabilities to allow for the storage of whole libraries of movies.
In effect, the computer of the future will be very close to the technologies displayed in star trek. The only things we won't have included is the replicator for that all important beer and popcorn. But there's no point in thinking small with computers. Forge ahead and force the industry to follow. Otherwise they go off on a tangent and make silly stuff like graphics cards that no home PC can handle - just because!

I'm not interested in fine details or minutae facts. I just like to take the overview to see above the quagmire of fussiness and pettiness. Squabbling over the gaming console versus the PC is futile.

And Deadeye, maybe if you open your mouth wide enough you can get your other foot in there. ;)

I always wanted to get into 3D modelling but I don't have any patience to sit and map stuff out and tweak and lalala. And I believe rendering can take days to do properly taking all the PC's resources to complete the task. I couldn't be bothered with that. I'll stick to 2D I think.

I'm thinking of buying a second more up to date system and networking so I can have one on both floors. There's always pros and cons to consider with this stuff though. My sister has no end of trouble with her network and I'm a little put off going down that route.

I discovered in a magazine the other week that it's posible to use your VCR like a floppy drive. Record onto cassettes if you use your TV as the monitor. How bizarre and antiquated and quaint....

jonboy

Actually, rendering isn't that bad on a good machine. As far as modeling goes, you do need patience and you need to be a perfectionist to make things look realistic.

Another nice addition is my hp photosmart 1215 printer to print pics from my digital camera. Now that's photo quality!

Yeah, but playing games on consoles are like crossing the ocean on a raft when there is a plane available. It can be done, but it isn't nearly the best way to do it.

I have a Gateway computer. Since I am far from a computer whiz I had to look at my control panel to find out what type. According to the computer it is a

Authentic AMD
AMD Atholon Processor
64.0MB RAM

I am surprised I found that!

RAVAZ

I built my system.

Athlon XP 1800 1.53 gig processor
Shuttle Motherboard Model AK31 V3.1
2 sticks of 512MB DDR memory
120 Gig Western Digital 8MB Cache 7200rpm, 480MB data transfer
DVD rom drive
Cd burner 24X10X40 (White)
3DFx Voodoo5 5500 64MB DDR AGP video card

Total price for parts, $680

I guess I didn't mention, I built my system too. The disadvantage of buying a system is that they usually don't put enough RAM in (usually only a paltry 128MB) and worse, they usually put in a weak old video card like a TNT2.

I have just started to get into the brown spicy mustard myself and honey mustard is always great on french fries and chicken fingers. I still stand by Ketchup as the best though. Sometimes I eat hamburgers just to get to the Ketchup.

:p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

If you look at the smile face, it looks like a hamburger with Ketchup squeezing out of the middle.

Hey I'm convinced Celine Dion is an alien overlord who has come here to melt our brains using sonic waves emitted from its mouth.

She/It just happened to land in Canada and make it its base or operations.

Alright here ya go, hating ketchup is wrong because one can't hate something so wonderful and delicious, but, you can dislike it although I don't understand how. Don't get me started on whats wrong with Canadians or people that like Celine Dion. Another reason not to hate ketchup, its the only thing that Jonna's mom tastes good with.
