OMG! They just showed a minute or two of the new podrace starting grid scene and Greg Proops is even more annoying! Is this how this whole new scene plays out?

I think the Eopie farting is longer too, like it sits there and scrunches up its face for an extra second or two trying to force it out. Now THAT'S comedy....

Star Wars DVD: $17.99

Extra CGI scenes with Greg Proops: $20,000

Longer Eopie farts: Priceless

''Is this how this whole new scene plays out?''
I hope not! I liked Greg Proops' comedy on the old Whose Line show, but I was bothered by his performance in TPM.

I've not watched the discs yet, but I'm looking forward to re-immersing myself in the film.

I've decided that I'm a masochist. I bought the DVD because it was released on Monday here in the UK and got it home where it has sat on a shelf glaring at me. Why am I a masochist? I don't own a DVD player or have a DVD drive in my PC. Why did I buy the DVD? Because I'm dumb and foolish. It's so easy to part me from my money..... :(

There, there Emperor Jargo. By the way, can I barrow $20?

*ugh, okay so you don't have $. Its still funny :p*

I just watched the DVD... Nice print job on those disks isn't it? They look marvellous if you stare at them in full sunlight but not so good in electric light...... The case is a little disappointing with it's flippity floppity insert. And the 'booklet' reminded me of the flimsy inserts from those 'wacky' ancient cassette singles one used to buy back in the last century, before the advent of CD's..... Not a lot happened really exept that my dog Buster sniffed at the disks and then walked off disgusted.... Maybe I need to stare at them a little longer. How was it for you starfig? Was your viewing any more rewarding than mine?

I don't even know anybody who has a DVD player..... :(

The longer podrace is unneccary. The original cut was fine just the way it was but it is interesting to look at it.

The pod race was long enough as it was. I don't mind that they added or changed things to the background and the background characters though (am I the only one that noticed this?).

Blind faith is the path to the cliff edge my friend. Tread wary and keep watching your back. ;)

Lucas is not a god. Lucas is not a genius. Lucas is not a good director. Lucas is an accomplished film practitioner. Holy smoke the man can hardly articulate his thoughts into a coherent sentence! Why worship such a buffoon? Without the skills of cinematographers like David Tattersall and John Dykstra Lucas wouldn't have Star Wars or the honours bestowed upon him by the industry and the media and fans. Lucas has ideas but they are mostly orchestrated and achieved by otherss far more talented than Mr. Lucas. I repeat slowly - HE IS NOT A GOD.....

Well, Jargo, at least you won't have to worry about getting a DVD player a few years from now and finding out LFL's no longer producing TPM on DVD, and, IMHO, that's AOK. :)

Back to the podrace--I thought it was plenty long as it was. The version on the second disc is ridiculously long, and has more than a few incredibly stupid sequences. The way it was edited back into the film was fine--it was nice to see Gasgano in action--except for the moronic bit about Anakin's pod spinning. That's lends even more of a deux ex machina feel to a race conclusion that was already a little too forced.

all i'm gonna say is that if lucas didn't have enough sence into creating these films, we would be talking about so other show...and i think that he just wanted it to be seen. no, he is not a genius or a god JARGO, he is just a man with an idea.

what would we do if he just dropped dead? say "oh, they weren't that good anyway."?
point in case
no more talk from me

The new podrace scene, especially the way it was recut back into the movie, is AWESOME!

Anakin's moves are terrific and proves even moreso that he was a great pilot. Sebulba frying Mars Guo with his flame-thrower is a classic, and the Tuskens gunning for Jawas, and the pit-probes getting smashed in the way, all are awesome!

That part of the movie is that much more fun for me now!

Way to go, George!

I can't tell which is sadder, Tycho's post or the fact that I think he's actually serious! ;)

10-19-2001, 11:42 AM
Sure, the visuals are cool as always. The starting line additions are interesting, especially if you've ever been to a real auto race.

However... (you saw that coming, didn't you!) while we did indeed see Anakin show off his piloting skills even better than in the original cut, that whole bit with the control cable was pretty ridiculous. While it would have been wayyy over the top, Anakin could have showed us his Force ability by reaching out for the cable with only his hand and having it fly into it. Instead he has some kind of magnet or something. GL was so close to hitting the mark with so many of these elements and scenes but somehow didn't see the forest for the trees and missed.

Aside from that, the Sandcrawler thing is awesome! I won't give it away for those of you who haven't yet seen it.

More annoying?

Sooo, for those of us who never found it annoying in the first place can expect to be annoyed now? I haven't seen the DVD yet but I can't wait to see the new additions to my favorite scene!

10-21-2001, 11:47 AM
I don't have a DVD player yet, but will be getting the disc. Can't wait to see the new scenes. I'm curious to see if they changed the sound effects in any way. Although they were good before.

Just to point it out:

Anankin Skywalker has no telekinetic ability with the Force [that he's aware of] during the pod race, or at that time in his life.

He could use the Force to grab the loose cable on his pod racer, but ANAKIN doesn't know that.

His abilities in the Force he is already using is that of forewarning, or foresight into the future. "He can see things before they happen. That's why he appears to have such fast reflexes."

Second, he has a centered confidence about him, and he retains control rather than panics, when Sebulba takes Mars Guo out and his pod hits Annie's, sending him into that spin.

Later, with Obi-Wan's training, Anakin can learn to use the Force to do things we saw Darth Vader do (like in Empire Strikes Back).

Just to point that out...

10-21-2001, 10:07 PM
Yeah, I "noticed" all that stuff too but not one bit of it was presented in a way that would convince anybody that Anakin was anything more than a good pilot and a nice kid.

GL had to (and didn't) have Ani DO something that resembled Force ability. There were a myriad of opportunities that were all missed. Instead, GL chose to TELL us all about it in his dinner sequence and with the infamous Midichlorian counter that magically finds Jedi guys.

I have to disagree here. He turned a hokey little story about "three goofballs and a guy in a monkey suit" (was it Harrison Ford that said that) into a billion dollar empire. The day he decided not to let Fox have the merchandising rights to Star Wars is the day he became a marketing genius (right up there with Bill Gates jumping in bed with IBM).

You know, I always have something negative to say about G.Lu's stuff (he did make Howard the Duck after all). However I want to say that I've really enjoyed the deleted scenes. Although they don't have CGI as good as the stuff done for the movie, and they aren't necessary for plot telling or any other device, I think it was great they were included. It brings up the point that these movie makers do have a difficult time in deciding what to trash and what to keep.

So the scenes may be kind of hokey (OK, really hokey in the case of 'Farewell to Jira') but I enjoyed watching every one of them. After about 2.5 years from the last SW I'm really ready for some new SW footage, even if it has Jar Jar in it.

JT, whispering to GNT: Man, that is one really desparate dude. :)

Nah, that's why he's known as George Flukas. He may have seen some financial reward coming from the merchandise but he never knew what he had until it rose up and bit him on the *** in '78. Sheer fluke. He had the sense to hire good guys to run the business for him and make the right decisions but he aint that much of a visionary. He has bright ideas but it's the guys who work for him that get the things to work. Ultimately it's all the other talented people who propelled George to the top.
Sorry to squash the holy cow image but it's just an observation and a humble opinion. Feel free to disagree anytime Thomas, that's what discussions are all about isn't it? rather than just a series of assertions.

And please don't use images like that and include Bill Gates, the imagery is too too horrible and won't leave my head....... *shudders*

Ahhh...finally...i saw the deleted scenes.

Ok, the podrace scenes were in some parts good and in some parts bad...i didnt liked the Eopie scene...nor the part on which Anakin rejoins the cable of his podracer...but i liked the part when the Tusken Raiders are aiming at the jawas...and the part on which Sebulba is burning another pod.

The part on which Qui Gonn destroys the probe droid explains why they are running in the desert...(although the ones that read the book...like me, hehehe already knew this)

I also wanted to see the scene on which Qui Gonn is forcing back Darth Maul.

The Aanakin fight with Greedo is just pointless...good thing the cutted that one.

The scene on which they are escaping the waterfall after leaving the Bongo in Naboo was also wisely cutted.

Anyway...the point of this DVD was to watch the movie in superior quality...have u seen it with a Hometheatre audio??? It sure feels u are in the movies again...:D

Have fun guys!!:)

I watched these today. Ten years on, they are quaint. I can see why they were edited out, as they are a bit tedious and really do not further the telling of the story in any way.* I enjoyed the bit with the Jawas and Tuskens. I had not noticed the Ithorian (Momaw Nadon?) in the stands before. The heads on the Bith spectators look too big.

*Then again, that much can be said about much of the PT...
