Dooku looks great. I love how they capture his calm style. Nice pose.

Mace looks FANTASTIC! I LOVE the pose. The fire behind him looks great as well.

I am very impressed. Let's hope that this line keeps up.

I am not happy w/ Pilot Jango. I do like the 12 inchers look nice as well...

Awesome as hell!! The Destroyer Droid: Arena Battle is finally movie accurate, bigger and has the extended middle eye. Jango: Pilot kicks arse. Hopefully the quick draw feature is similar to Zam's so it doesn't hurt the figure to much.

Wow, is all I can say about the Deluxe Clonetrooper w/ Speeder Bike. I had read rumors of him having a removable helmet, glad it panned out. That is sweet as hell!!

The Unleashed line keeps getting better and better. I love the Dooku, though it's to bad they didn't include Yoda. And the Mace Windu with the flames is awesome. :)

I'm overjoyed at everything that they showed so far at the Comicon. Hasbro you are really impressing me with some of the stuff that is coming down the pipe. Keep up the awesome work. :)

Everything looks pretty cool. The Clone w/ Speederbike is awsome beyond words!!!. The bike is a far superior version to the POTF one. Can't wait until they come out.

In the helmetless picture, the clone looks like he's aggressively showing somebody how big his action figure would be.

I'm oddly impressed. :)

Since those currently are only rumors for next year, you arn't going to see pictures this early. Hasbro hasn't even confirmed those are being produced yet, so maybe at Toy Fair. :)

There are maybe a few more basic surprises for the year, but nothing big. Most of us were spoiled early on. :)

I do like Pilot Jango, mostly for the pose and face sculpt. I have a feeling the quick-draw is both arms, but that's alright, I want to pose him almost exactly the way he is in the bubble. :)

Check out the coverage!!!!!! Your probably like "won you back??", well most of their figures where turning me off :P.

Pilot Jango is cool (what jetpack does he have? looks like the geonosis one but it has a rocket sticking up, push it down for quick draw?), the 2 clones come with the smaller blasters, speederbike looks to be retooled/resculpt (better than the first!!).

As for the other Arena accessories, they might have been re-routed to keep the cost down. The electrobinder could always come with a Jedi Duel Obi-Wan. But we'll know for sure once somebody scans any instruction sheet that's included.

It's a nice set, but I'm anxious to see how some will customize it.

Clonetrooper with Speeder Bike is pretty awesome. I like the removable helmet. Does anyone know how many points of articulation this guy has? Gonna pic up a couple of him as soon as I see him.

Pilot Clonetrooper looks dope too, but my fave of all the pics is Count Dooku 12".

Deluxe Troopers are very cool. Arena should be a cool piece for diorama people (and kids). I really like the Unleashed line so the new Mace and Dooku look appeal to me. New 3 3/4" figures, well, I need to see them more in detail but the sculpts look good.

Wolfwood319
08-01-2002, 01:37 AM
Pretty decent, I guess, for mostly resculpts. The Pilot Jango is alright, good sculpt, but not much you can do with it to begin with. Another Jango, is another Jango. Clonetrooper is cool, re-hashed Speeder bike and all, but its not overly impressive. As with Pilot Clonetrooper, same clonetrooper body with a new helmet.

All in all, good sculpts, but all resculpts that weren't really necessary. I would've much rather seen figures of characters that haven't been put to plastic yet.

The Unleashed figures look good, as usual. Nothing to complain about here.

Wow ... I'm even a little more excited about that set now. I can't imagine what MY kid is going to do when we get it out of the box.

The 12" figures look great ... Dooku is going to be very nice. The Imperial Officer looks super also. Very exciting. (But ... for some reason the Dengar figure reminds me of one of those creepy "Hugo - Man of a thousand faces" puppets from the '70s. Come to think of it Kenner made that didn't they?)

I must agree, the deluxe clone trooper looks like a lot of fun. Great articulation ... I really hope they keep turning out figures built like that.

(ohh ... I want a display case like that now!)

I dunno if they "won me back", but these do look pretty good compared to earlier designs. That Deluxe clone trooper is gonna sell like hotcakes! The speederbike looks like it's been tightened up, I hope I'm right because the original design was good but could definitely be improved upon with just a little work. I'm glad to see the proper handle grips back too.

I love the clonetrooper pilot. Jango pilot does nothing for me. Why didn't they give him any pack-ins like the Obi Pilot figure. God, anything! This figure has no use but to complete people who need a Jango pilot figure to sit in their Slave 1 cockpit. I can't get on fire about the Deluxe clonetrooper, but it's not hasbro's fault. Why would the speeder bike have the exact same design as the ROTJ ones? Come on! Even a slight difference in design would have made all the difference in the world. The Arena does look great though.

I don't see a problem with the SpeederBikes the clones use are the same as the ROTJ ones. Maybe it's just a popular style? Motorcycles and Bicycles haven't changed very much in years, so I don't see why they couldn't have the same model of Speeder Bike in the Star Wars Universe for ages. :)

He looks like Bodie Taylor, who, like Jay Laga'aia (Captain Typho), is of Maori descent. Temuera is, too, but most of the CG clones on Kamino were based on Bodie, which causes the confusion, since some viewers tie Bodie and Jay together because they're closer in age than Bodie and Temuera. But Bodie is a clone, and Jay is the nephew of Captain Typho. No connection. :)

But they did a great job with Bodie's likeness. :)

The speeder bike is awesome! finally correct handlebars and feet and the rear is completely redone to remove the pack button that activated the break apart feature. The detailing on the feet is finer and it just rocks so much more than the one from the AT-ST re-release. The clonetrooper looks dandy apart from the thunder thighs. If that's because the armor is removable I have to say WHY? Seems pretty pointless to me to do that. The head sculpt looks sweet though and a removable helmet is what I wanted out of a clonetrooper. I have hopes for a stormtrooper with removable helmet now.

The pilot clonetrooper is cool, the gunpod looks alittle strange out of context but I can live with that to get a cool clonetrooper. Love the chest controls that echo the AT-AT driver and the helmet is a much nicer design than the regular clonetrooper IMO. Like the modest dirtying effect but really that's the kind of detail that the sneak preview and regular carded clonetrooper should have had.

The destroyer droid is fine apart from the missile firing feature. It works the same as the deluxe mace firing mecjhanism in as much as it isn't trigger fired as such but rather pull back and let go to fire. I could have done without that on such a fine looking droid. Nice to see it finally get a release though.

The arena itself seems pretty wasted to me. Hate those big doors, should have been a big arch instead to put the Reek or Acklay into or have the execution cart come out of (there's bound to be an execution cart and Orray released at some point) I don't like the back of the playset. Where the deluxe sets connect is really haphazardly placed. The only parts I really like are the observation balcony and the retractable bridge. The stickers showing teeny tiny geonosians should have been taken off it and replaced with more rock sculpting or more openings instead.
I'm not terribly impressed with this still after all this time hoping it would be better in the final version. Too bad, I was thinking of buying it. I'll save my money for red battle droids instead :)

Jango pilot looks better than the other jango's so far but why for the love of George Clooney did they mutilate him with a frickin' gimmick feature? *sigh* If they insist on putting these things into figures they should also give out instructions on how to disable the feature and customise it out. I'm soooooooooo sick and tired of seeing good figure sculpts go to waste.... I shall buy it and try to salvage an arm from a different Jango to replace the gimmick.

The second Endor rebel soldier unbearded has surfaced so I'll address that here as well and say what a cool head sculpt it has. It makes the figure look so much better. It makes the figure. The bearded one just looks like someones dad slapped his own face onto it. That one does not look right at all. This new head variation looks super fine.

I'll leave the 12 inch dollies and unleashed freakplastic to others.

Verdict - good and bad in equal measures.

Jargo, I agree with you about the Arena playset, it looks like a waste from here. It's not terrible, but they could have done more - it reminds me of the original MOTU Castle Grayskull, hollow and slightly detailed on the inside, and only 1 big door.

I personally think the stuff in the 3 3/4" line is looking very good now that they have gotten past the initial release stage. As far as the Arena goes... I stated in another thread, that while the cardboard seems a little on the cheap... we mustn't forget that the walls of the revered vintage Death Star were also cardboard pieces.

ArtoosNews.Com seems to be the first site to get the Hasbro Q&A up. It seems to be really incomplete though, and they cut out all the questions about Transformers and G.I. JOE. But this will make do until a better version pops up. :)

Hasbro Question & Answer (for Star Wars, G I Joe, and Transformers - cutting out all the irrelevant questions about Joes and Transformers)

First they showed a video clip of various Hasbro boy's toys - mostly focusing on GI Joe, Transformers, Beyblades and Zoids.

Hasbro: The future of the Playskool line: Currently the Millennium Falcon is the last in the lineup, although they are pleased with the success and want to make more, either under the Playskool name, or bring it back under Boys' Toys: Star Wars. The Playskool line has gone to KB, JCPenny, and is currently out of stock at Walmart and Kmart.

One guy showed off 4880 Jedi Master points and asked when he would be able to use them. The Star Wars team has been thinking about them ("at least once a day"). There is a possibility of some sort of promotion this fall involving Jedi Master points, possibly connected to the DVD release. Receipts would not be required, if the Jedi Master points were sent in.

Q: Is there a possibility of a 12 inch Episode II Boba Fett?
Hasbro: Nothing is planned.

Q: How about the AT-TE?
Hasbro: Nothing is planned for the 3.75 scale. There is a possibility for the Action Fleet scale.

Q: Why does the Acklay toy have a bad paint job compared to the box photos?
Hasbro: Cost savings.

Q: Why does Supreme Chancellor Palpatine come with no accessories?
Hasbro: The figure is part of Collection 2, which specializes more in accurate details for collectors and diorama builders as opposed to the action features of Collection 1, which is geared more towards the kids.

Q: How about a 12 inch scale Drop ship?
Hasbro: Not likely, as it would be very expensive and big, which retailers balk at.

Hasbro: The rumor about the Bounty Hunter wave (12 inch) being cancelled - is false. It is not being distributed through Hasbro warehouses in the US, but shipped directly to retailers from the factories in Asia. The 12 inch Count Dooku will continue to be released in later shipments as popularity was underestimated "for an old man with a beard". Also watch for female 12 inch figures.

Q: I like the detachable parts (Hasbro: thank Lucas for putting that in the film), any chance for more Expanded Universe figures?
Hasbro: Possibility in off-years of 2003-2004. There is also a possibility of more Troop builder packs.

Q: Why no exclusive figures for Comic-Con, when other conventions get exclusives?
Hasbro: "Our presence here isn't enough?" (joke)

Someone who wanted more retail room for GI Joe and Transformers called Star Wars "shelf trash"

Q: Any more podracing pilots?
Hasbro: Teemto Pagalies is coming soon

Q: Why no mini-figures with the Action Fleet ships?
Hasbro: Safety concerns.

Q: Will Cinema Scenes return?
Hasbro: Possibly in 2003, second half.

Q: Army builders, when are the different heads going to appear?
Hasbro: We haven't forgotten about those, also extra troop building ability by buying the accessory packs that come with generic troopers.

Q: GI Joe movie in the works, who would you cast?
Hasbro: Have you seen the Baroness downstairs? (joke)

It almost makes my laugh how Hasbro will lie and twist the truth right in front of your face. The talk about safety concerns like they care, yet I don't see how they can use that defense when they still throw in small accessories with the figures. And there answer to the Podracer question was just sad.

That answer's just ludicrous! I think Zam Wessell's pistol is about the size of a MicroMachine figure. They must really think we don't know their product line very well.

Steve just called me from the floor of the SDCC to have me change his forums post to reflect new info. I'll repost it here as well:

update - Steve asked me to tell you guys that the above (non-removable armor) is what Hasbro's people told us on Aug 1st, however Hasbro had new people today (Aug 2nd) who knew the item better and they confirmed that the armor is removable - JT

He also wanted me to let you know that there are two different versions of the Deluxe Clone Trooper figure in the display, one is a prototype and one is a test-shot/first-run figure. This is why there is a black button on the back of only one of the figures on display.

JediTricks
08-02-2002, 05:24 PM
And that answer about the mini-figs being a safety concern is ludicrous, probably more Hasbro brass who aren't familiar enough with the line. I don't think they're lying, I think the Hasbro reps at the SDCC yesterday simply aren't close enough to our beloved SW line to be in the know.

(Or the R2sNews ppl just didn't feel like writing it all down. :p) The safety concern issue over the Action Fleet is dumb, otherwise they wouldn't be including the riders for the Battle Pack beasts and Speederbikes!

I just want one person to stand up and ask "Why are you deliberately killing the Action Fleet line when you know it could sell to keep it original as it was if you gave it more effort?"

On a non-Micro note, their explanation as to why Palpatine was accessory less was pathetic. They claimed that the Collection 2 assortment was for diorama builders, ok so why didn't they pack-in an accessory from his office?

Parting from my ranting...

The deluxe Clone Trooper looks cool, and actually if you read carefully in the Q&A some RebelScum guy got from some Hasbro guy (it involved them laughing at Peter Mayhew "trying" to fit into the life-size Saga package) at Wizard Con, the Hasbro guy told about possible removeable armor for the Deluxe Clone Trooper.

The Pilot Jango should've been Collection 2 as it is mostly for diorama builders for the Slave 1. It should've also included possibly a Slave 1 console or a crate along with another jetpack (could've been a generic painted Boba Fett version) to store inside the create.

The gunship is looking great, although I wonder what the rack type of piece under the wings is for and what's with the boxes with the obvious removeable panels also under the wings? I'm guessing the rack looking thing is a gun rack or missile rack (like under the slave 1) of sorts, and I'm guessing the box pieces are cargo compartments or missile storage... *shrugs*

Those are DEFINITELY not the answers Hasbro gave! We will be posting the Q & A in detail very soon.

Yeah, Hasbo likes to give long worded anwsers and play word games to confuse the people into beleiving that Hasbro always makes the "right" and "correct" decision.

SirSteve

Here are the highlights of the Hasbro Q & A. I summarized the questions to get to the point.

Playskool line future
"We are hoping to produce more in this line. If you haven't been able to find them, keep looking as more retailers are getting them in. JCPenny picked up the line, Wal-Mart and K-Mart sold out and Toy's "R" Us did not carry the line."

Jedi Points Status
"We have been pre-occupied with Episode II and talk about it on a daily basis. We're trying to come up with the right program. We have some ideas on the table that we're working pretty hard on. Possibly, we could have a program in place for this fall. If you have the points cut-out, that would be sufficient. If you don't, we would need some kind of proof."

12" Line
"In terms of 12" figures, we will continue to have new figures. There was a little bit of confusion. It's still planned for the fall. There was an erroneous report on the Internet that we had cancelled that but it's not true. We distribute in two ways. One is domestically through our warehouse to the retailers and the other is the retailers come and pick up the products directly from us in Asia. We decided to instead of ship that product direct to our retail partners in Asia. I guess some of the customers who would have bought it from us from our warehouse received a letter that we would not be shipping this method and recorded that it was being canceled. That was not true. We will continue to have the Bounty Hunter wave this fall and continue to have 12" next year. (Andrew chimes in) and definitely keep an eye out for more female characters."

3 3/4" Ponda Boba (Walrus Man)
"Yes he will have a removable arm."

12" Scale Boba Fett from Episode II
"No current plans."

Expanded Universe
"We are pretty focused on Episode II and classic characters. We are always evaluating Expanded Universe. Going forward into 2003 and 2004 non-movie years to consider that."

Cinema Scenes
"We were waiting to see the movie and figure out the key scenes. One of the things we learned from Episode I is that if we tried to do it before the movie was finalized, George makes a lot of changes, all the way throughout. It's very difficult to guess what those scenes were. We're considering it, but we want to do it a little bit different than we've done it in the past if we do it. You can get most of the figures in 3 3/4" already, so we would have to do it so there's something new and unique about it that you can't get from the basic figure line."

Micromachines and Action Fleet, why no figures?
"Not currently planned for this year but something we have been discussing and is a possibility for the future."

Episode II Action Fleet availability?
"They had to go back and rework them a little bit so they are behind schedule."

Troop Builders
"There will be follow-ups to that. We will continue that." (Andrew also threw in a plug for the Target Accessory packs which include a Troop Builder figure.)

Why no exclusive figure at this convention?
"Our presence isn't enough? We are always looking at promotional opportunities and absolutely Comic Con is one of the largest and we'll look into in the future."

3 3/4'' Count Dooku is hard to find. Can I buy direct from Hasbro?
"He's proven to be more popular than we anticipated; he's an old man with a beard. It's one of those things. We try to meet demand as the best we can. We will continue to produce and ship them. We're not set up to be a retailer. Our business is making great toys and letting our terrific retail partners sell them. In the case of Star Wars, the online store the fan club is in a little bit of transition and will continue to work with them as well.

Why does Acklay have a bad paint job compared to the picture on the package?
"A lot of times we do have to make some concessions from the time the picture is taking on the photography on the packaging from the time it actually hits the markets because costs and reasons. We try to do the best we can do get the deco correct from the movie. Sometimes it didn't but some of it had to come out."

12'' AT-TE possibility?
"Right now it is not planned for this years line but it is under consideration. It may lend itself better to the Action Fleet line scale and 3 3/4" due to the size of it but it is certainly under consideration."

Possibility of 12" scale vehicles?
"The biggest thing we've gotten to do is the Tauntaun, and we have a new one coming out this year. It all boils down to a costing issue. To do something really cool like a Snowspeeder or a Landspeeder and I hate to say thins but you're pushing a $100 retail or more. We are looking at it in different ways."

Supreme Chancellor Palpatine - Why no features or accessories?
"Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is a Collection 2 figure which means that it's really for the collector market. We really gave it a lot of attention in detail and deco. Collection 1 which is more for the kids where you will have a little bit more of the accessory and battle features."

Any more pod racer figures going to be made?
There is a podrace figure coming out this fall in the 3 3/4" line (Teemto Pagalies).

Will the future army building troopers like Episode II one be hard to find?
“We are trying to make as many toys as we can for everyone that wants them. I think you are referring to the clone pilot with the yellow markings. He will be available in the main line and won’t be hard to find.”

Thanks for a more detailed Q&A report Sir Steve. I'm glad that Hasbro didn't sound as bad as they did in what Artoosnews.com heard. That was just lazy reporting in my opinion. Another reason why I prefer Sir Steve's Guide for all my Star Wars news. Thanks again for making this the best Star Wars Collecting Website on the Net. :)

Teemto out in the fall? So how come folks are finding him now? That's very odd.....

The pics so far are great. I do wonder about this deluxe clonetrooper with 'flinging' action. Isn't it enough that he has the removable armor and the bike without having a gimmick too? I hope the 'flinging' action gets ditched before he's produced. If not it'll be another case of over-egging the pudding IMO. Apart from that though the deluxe clonetrooper looks sweet. The pilot clonetrooper does too. In actual fact if your a customiser, putting the deluxe clonetrooper head on the pilot clonetrooper body would give about the best neutral pose clonetrooper. I guess we'll be looking way into the future to get a basic army builder plain white clonetrooper that doesn't have a wide stance. If they make an army builder pack using the idea above that'd be sweet beyond belief. :)

Two comments on the "Deluxe" Clone Trooper.

1. That speeder bike is just a Rebel speeder
2. It should be in the vehicles line, not the deluxe line, the only figure that can be called truely deluxe is, C-3PO.

Nice figures at last.....this wave is getting closer to the collectors aim.......Actually Jargo is right...CT pilot is going to have the best body of them all...with a head from others CT could be the relaxed pose clonetropers we've been waiting for !

Anyway Lott Dodd could've come with Nute Gunray Hologram instead......

and for the speeder bike at least they corrected the handles....!now they are horizontal......maybe I'll change them with my rebel speederbike

Easy with the post padding there, Corporal AMF. A mod may end up deleting 2 of your posts and combining the three posts into one. That's one thing that the mods really keep a tight reign on. May want to just next time you have a new thought, just add to your original post. :)

As for the Speeder Bike, Jek the Speeder has been retooled, and does feature vast improvments over the POTF2 re-issue. And I don't see a problem with putting it in the deluxe line. Stores are more likely to order figures then they are vehicles, so it should be much easier to find this way. :)

If no one's noticed yet, the Destroyer Droid has clear rods on the back of his blaster hands. They don't appear to do anything specific, but his arms appear to have quite a bit of articulation so I'm guesing they're so you can have the figure facing away from you and be able to move the arms using the clear rods. Hope they're removeable, they sure you stand out like a sore thumb after you notice them.

Beast
08-03-2002, 01:54 PM
LTBasker, the clear rods are from the missles. It's similar to how they made the deluxe Mace Windu. You pull the clear stick back, and then when you release it, the spring inside shoots the blast out. :)

Here's a quick comparison of the original episode one destroyer droid prototype that was going to come as a two pack with Jarjar, and the new SAGA destroyer droid with silly missile firing mechanism that's mucked up the superior sculpt.

Hango is right, they should have left the blasts coming from the cannons not added the missiles.

And I'm up for a destroyer hologram. I also want the bubble to go over the top of the destroyer droids so you can have some with their shields up.

jonboy
08-03-2002, 09:19 PM
The new DD isn't what I thought that it would be. The firing mechanism messes up the look of the arms. I agree with the blast effects on the cannons idea. It would have looked a whole lot better.

hango fett
08-03-2002, 09:58 PM
they just should have kept the blast effects from the TPM one and the rest of it look like what it is now....but remeber....this IS a prototype, which means they could change...

Darth forb1us

I too agree with the missiles being a bad idea.
The sculpt is nice! but this ruins it, especially with huge clear rods hanging out the back haha.
for scene building however one could cut the rod and (hopefully without glue, or maybe w/ glue *shrug*) have the blast effect still in the same place, w/o that rod.
OR - has anyone seen a closeup of "where the blast effects should be" ? maybe someone elses effect (3 3/4" figure) could fit on/in where they SHOULD be??
I know someone has to have seen it up that close :p

“We are trying to make as many toys as we can for everyone that wants them. I think you are referring to the clone pilot with the yellow markings. He will be available in the main line and won’t be hard to find.”

The above quote, of all those presented by our beloved Sir Steve I think best underscores the problem I have with these kind of corporate Q&A sessoins. Though there was a lot of viable information presented, the real problem with these things is that often the information given has already been known for quite some time. At other times the responses given do not directly address the quiestion presented.

The above quote, as I said, ideally illustrates this problem. It appers to me that this question was more about the existing Clone Trooper figures. Or perhaps more accuratly the "Sneak Preview" Clone Trooper. You see, Hasbro really dropped the ball on this one. By selecting the common, rank and file Trooper as the Preview figure and the Officer as the standard release figure. Why? Well, I challenge anyone to find the Sneak Preview Clone Trooper en masse on the pegs at a Wal Mart or Toys R Us. The same challenge could be extended toward the red-highlighted Clone Trooper on the blue card. Chances are you will find a multitude of the latter avalable, and little to none of the former. The reason this is a problem is that there are, as a matter of course, far fewer Officers than standard soldiers. And Hasbro mass produced the Officer and under-produced the soldier. You see, retailers undoubtedly would (and did) order far fewer cases of the Sneak Preview line than they did of the standard line. Just look at the huge expanses of space provided iniitally to create a sea of blue cards at both Toys R Us and Wal-Mart that was not reflected in the endcaps or tiny allocations of space afforded the Sneak Preview line.

But I seem to digress. I think that the crux of this question was that the Clone Trooper soldier was "hard to find", especially after the release of the full scale, blue-carded Star Wars imprint line. And unless you want "too many chiefs" in your army, it is hard to build a decent Clone Trooper army as of this moment, should one suddenly desire to do so.

Now, on to Hasbro's reply. The representatives are by nature out of touch with such concerns. Though I applaud Hasbro's recent dedication to the Star Wars line and more especially their recognition of not only the existance but also the economic importance of the collector market (as opposed to child buyers), I don't believe they fully understand what collectors want and need. So while someone may be saying, will we be able to find our "army builders" in decent quantities, the Hasbro rep seems to have simply taken this to mean, "Will you be making enough of the NEXT Clone Trooper variation". Again, the Pilot is as effective an army builder as the Officer. The present line creates a situation that would be like Hasbro having released OOM-9 at the begining of the Episode 1 line, but no standard Battle Droids until around the time of the Darth Sidious Hologram, Sio Bibble, and Pit Droids release. You know, when retail buyers were ordering less and less Episode 1 as their shelves were already overstocked with earlier releases.

Hopefully they will determine that a standad Clone Trooper, perhaps in the less dynamic pose that many have requested, will be in the works in the near future.
