View Full Version : Pop-Up On Main Page...

Okay, first let me express my opinion on pop-ups in general: I, without a single doubt, hate pop-ups. I despise them. They shouldn't exisit. I hope I've made myself clear :crazed:.
Anyway, when we used to have the MR pop-up, that was okay. That thing came up behind the page, and I could just close it as I was waiting for the page to change from Home to the Forums. But this thing has been coming up as I'm trying to read the titles for the new stories, and has even been delayed and has come up while I'm actually reading those stories.
I honestly am sick of wasting my time on numerous websites, having to close a barrage of pop-up ads that have absolutely no purpose. If I wanted such things, I would go looking for them. I have stopped going to most of those websites...
Although this is quite small, and SSG doesn't have more than one [ad], it's still annoying. I don't want to sound as though I'm whining, but I've heard this course of action plenty of times on these boards: If you don't like something, don't read it, watch it, look at it. Well, then I guess I'm going to stop coming to SSG or I'll skip right to the Forums and miss out on any new news...
End.

Lman316, there is already an existing thread on this topic and this will probably get merged with that one.:)

I know that there was/is, but I can't find it. I thought it was in the General Discussion area, but I couldn't find it. Then I figured this should probably be in the Comments area, anyway, because that's really what this is.
So...yeah.

Not gonna be merged unless Steve himself does it, that one is asking who dislikes it, this one is a direct comment.
Oh, and I *still* haven't see this popper because I use Netscape. :D

We will never be able to make everyone happy so we try to make the majority happy. You can close it as soon as it starts. It's only a month long campaign and the money will be used to bring you more/better services (and keep us online).

I honestly have no problems with advertising - I love it, that's what will keep capitalism going :D. But I just don't like pop-ups, never will.
I would rather see the Galidor ad plastered all over the place, in the borders, whatever, rather than having an extra screen coming up and getting in my face...
That's all I'm saying. I mean, you don't have pop-ups for KebCo or Brian's toys. They're just in their regular slots, and they're still ads. Just as good, IMO. And they don't annoy the heck out of people.
Just sayin' is all...

You hate commercials right? They are right in your face as well. We'll, it's the same thing. If people don't click on the static ads as much (which is the case), there has to be another means of getting people's attention.

I haven't got any problem with SSG's pop up it pays the bills for the site and provides the best possible forums for us. :D I'd rather have a pop up and a cool site than no pop ups but a rubbish site.

Pop-ups suck, honk, blow; whatever you prefer. However, as much as I come to SSG, I don't have a problem with the use of pop-ups, per se, on this page. HOWEVER, the placement of that sucker is a thorn in my side.
There is no good reason to put it right in the middle of everything. It distracts from the readers' ability to enjoy the site and, from what I've seen on the topic thusfar, makes people more prone to just kill it as soon as they see it.
If, for instance, the pop-up was placed in the lower right corner, people would not be so quick to kill it; as it would allow them to read their news, peruse the page AND check out the pop-up without having to sacrifice one for the other.
I'm now 2 cents poorer.....

it's SUPPOSED to distract you, that is the very point of it. it's SUPPOSED to make you inadvertantly click on it in some dire hope that you will get to the site and make a brand connection.
for the record, i think it sucks, and if it's penetration into the audience's stream of consciousness you want, then soon all commercial internet usage will just have drop out periods of commercials.

Man, I thought that sucker was only gunna run for a month.
If we have to put up w/ pop-ups (which I don't REALLY mind), give us a new something to annoy us :)
Ugh.....

Just my 2 cents.
I'm far more unlikely to visit a site that is advertised through the pop-up method than one that is static. Why? Two reasons.
The first is that I am very likely to just close the pop up as fast as possible because it is physically in the way of the thing that I wanted to read in the first place.
The second is that when I see a pop up, my little fuse ignites in hatred for the thing and through guilt-by-association, I learn to despise the company or product on the pop-up. Pop-ups are really annoying and unless it is a very compelling product, I don't feel compelled to encourage the practice by either visiting the site or actually purchasing a product from the company. Doing so only tells them that it's working and the result would only be more of those g'dmned popups.
Static ads are fine. Even Pop under ads are slightly acceptable, but when I want to see something, I'm only going to get annoyed if something jumps in my way (unless it's a screamin' hot naked blonde of course). So drop in a few PopUps with coupons for Lapdances at Cheetahs and I'll consider clicking on them, but until then, I'll close them as fast as my mouse will allow.
So I guess my request would be to have the company alter it being a PopUnder ad. Then, when I'm done with SSG and close that window, POOF, there the little ad will sit, commanding my full attention. Then I can calmly decide to read it or not.
