View Full Version : Kmart Sale Experience

Yesterday, I went to Kmart with my friend Brandi, so we could look at the Star Wars toys. I had heard on SSG there was a sale - all Star Wars toys 50% off. I go back to toys, and I see three signs saying, "All Star Wars Toys - Buy One Get One 50% Off". I said to myself..."That's not right. They are supposed to be 50% off, regardless of how many you purchase." So I went to the sporting goods department and had a man named Russ scan them to see if they rang up at 50% off. First I gave him Jango Fett's Slave 1. $29.99 it said. I told Russ, "That's wrong Russ. All Star Wars toys are 50% off." He thought about it for a minute, and said, "Maybe only some are 50% off." I told him there were three signs saying they were 50% off. Then I gave him a preview Zam Wessell figure to ring up. It rang up at 5 something, which was the original price. Russ says, "Now this figure originally retailed at around 10 dollars." I said ok, and I went back to toys. I said to Brandi, "Let's get out of here. Russ does not know what he is talking about." I ended up taking Anakin's and Zam's speeders to the register. The person at the register was named Gina, a sort of a psycho, with whom I had checked out with before. I said, "Hi Gina, how are you today?" She says, "Busy...what do you think?" Yikes! Watch out for Psycho Gina! Then I gave her my toys, and she rang up the first one. The register said $12.99. I said, "That's wrong Gina. All Star Wars toys are supposed to be 50% off." Then Brandi kindly reminded Gina that I get three dollars off if the items do not ring up correctly. "I am going to have to call someone from toys," she says. Then I talk to her about the situation, and she asks if I am a collector. Then she asked me if I was going to open the toys. I said yes, that I open all of my Star Wars toys. Gina says, "You know they are worth more if you keep them in the package." I tell her that I like to open mine. Then a kind older lady on a Rascal Motor Scooter behind me says, "What is the purpose of having a toy if you can't open it up and play with it?" I told her that that is what I thought too. While we are waiting for the person from toys to arrive, I tell Gina that we talked to a guy named Russ in sporting goods, who didn't know what he was talking about. "That's who I called," said Gina. Brandi giggles. Then Russ comes. Gina talks to him and gets him to void the sale, and they scan the speeders at least four times each. He finally tells Gina to give them to me at $6.50 each. I ask about the policy on items that ring up wrong. Russ says, "Ummm...that doesn't include clearance items." Brandi says to Russ, "But they aren't clearance items. They are SALE items." Russ tells us that it still doesn't count. Russ leaves. Gina explains the policy, and Brandi and I leave. Now how is that for an experience?

Sounds like a normal day at K-MART!

Thats why I don't shop there.

However, 3 or 4 of my local K-marts were closing a few months ago and my wife dragged me along to look for some"GREAT DEALS". We found NOTHING! We were about to leave and she said just let me look over here real quick. So I waited in the isle for her. I looked at a palet in front of me with some crap they found in the back of the stock room on it and low and behold it had a flashback R2 W/lightsaber on the right side!!!WOW!!and a OOM-9! they rung up at $1.99 each.cool!

I still don't shop at K-mart

Nice selective memory. Might want to re-read the article:

Grand Admiral Thrawn tells us of K-mart having a sale on Star Wars figures where it's buy one & get one for half price.

It's misinformed customers like that that make me glad I no longer work in retail.

Yeah,

If you had paid attention when you read the article OR looked at the ad available in-store OR read the signs they had posted you would have realized that you were WRONG.

I am glad I don't have to work retail anymore...

The customer is always right is junk in stories like this...

I feel sorry for Russ and Gina...

Seriously, what do you think Russ was thinking of your logic while you argued that ALL SW toys are 50% off while standing next to THREE (that's 3) signs that say the sale is "Buy one get one at 50%?" Just because someone told me all the cars at my local car dealership were 99% off I doubt that I could get one at that price. "But my friend said they were 99% off!!"

The closest I came to working retail was unloading the trucks in the back. I could never work the floor.

Perhaps Tyler heard about it from a thread or from another site?

I can only respond based on what somebody says...

An investigation wasn't in my mandate. ;) But now you've made me curious.....

Try managing on the sales floor, and in a department store no less.....talk about customers wanting it their way, regardless of the signs........AAARRGGHHH!

so do you enjoy ripping people off?? do you enjoy stealing from people?? cause that is what you are doing! and we wonder why there are so many buisnesses going out of buisness these days. just because you read it here does not mean that the stores are going to abide but what is typed here. i could tell you that all Star Wars figures at Wal-Mart are not $1 each, but do you think they are going to give it to you at that price?? NO! because they have everything priced and flagged! and if that store's manager would have come up, instead of a poor smuck who doesn't know jack about Star Wars, you would have never gotten them for that price! I hope you feel better at night knowing that you stole something from someone else!

I agree, the signs clearly state that the items are "Buy 1 Get 1 for 50% off." And people wonder why stores are having to raise prices. It's not just because of shoplifters, it's also because of cases like this where customers take the motto, "The Customer is always right" like it's a free ticket to rip stores off. That motto really needs to be thrown out. The customer is not always right, most of the time the customer is totally wrong. It's stories like these, that make me realize all to clear, how stores like K-Mart end up going bankrupt. :frus:

THANK YOU JJB!!!

As a former department manager, I've had to give away many a thing to loudmouthed, snobby, undeserving idiots because of that "motto" and because the Store manager didn't like dealing with customer complaints/letters to corporate. If I'd had it my way, I'd have sent them packing, regardless of whether they'd return. For every idiot there are more honest customers out there. Stores would lose less money by losing these customers. Unfortunately, the "experts" who have never worked the sales floor fail to see it that way.

Hey guys, my bad. When I logged on this morning, and saw the news story on SSG, I realized I was wrong. I went back to Kmart, and I talked to the manager. Then I spoke with Russ and Gina, and apologized for making them go through all that just because of me being an idiot. The manager was really nice, and I DID give them back the money I owed. Russ and Gina were really nice, and now everything is better. Then I came home to post on the thread that it was my fault I had a terrible experience, and saw all of your messages. Thanks guys!

No, we didn't have a bad day. We just hate theives, and frankly you trying to now pass it off in a jokey manner is a smack in the face to people that actually have to pay retail for things. You should take those items back, and either pay full price for one of them, or get your money back.

You were not an uniformed consumer. Don't you think 3 shelf signs and Russ telling you that it was "Buy 1 get 1 for 50% Off" is informing you. You were well informed, and if you think that you weren't, then you are fooling yourself. So don't even pull that wool over your own eyes, cause it's pretty thin.

No, it is people like you. People that would rather rip a store off, then pay what they should. You are as just as bad as a shoplifter, because not only are you hurting the store, you may end up hurting Russ or Gina, cause you ripped the store off.

If you think that stores aren't going to close because you stole $6.50 from them, then you are sadly mistaken. Add up other people that are pulling the same crap on stores, and stores suddenly start dipping into the red. Then they have to raise prices, which drives customers away. It's all connected, your theft was just a small piece of a larger puzzle.

I don't buy the "It was a mistake" argument. You intentionally ripped that store off. You didn't mention one time to them that there was shelf signs identifing the fact that it was "Buy 1 Get 1 for 50% Off. Just remeber, Karma is a biotch and she's got your number.

yes there is, because when prices go up, or stores go out of buisness, its because they are not making a profit. and why are they not making a profit?? because whinny, i always want my way customers are always getting their way. the customer is NOT always right.

"Oh, sorry, even though this grill had charded burns all over it, still has parts of meat on it, and is broken in 3 places, I only used it once. Actually I never used it before and I want my money back. Ignore its the day after the 4th of July, I never used it, this is how it came out of the box"

or

"But it was sitting on the shelf where it said $1."

have you never heard of customers putting stuff down where it does not belong??? that is why most shelf lables have the description AND upc's on them. but they don't care, that's where they found it(or not but that's what they say), and that's the price they want it for!

and then there are people who come here and brag about it. that's what makes the the maddest! not only that they do it, but that they want everyone else to know!

aarrrrrrrgggghhhhh!!!! it just makes me soo mad sometime!!

Ok, I saw your original post. You did not say any of this stuff. I wish I would have quoted you, since you changed it to make yourself appear glowing. You said you slept better at night knowing that you got it for $6.50. So don't BS me, you are just trying to avoid people being mad at you, by acting like you felt bad and returned the items. Don't buy it at all, sorry. You're original post seemed almost giddy about what you did. You give the entire collecting community a huge black eye. No wonder many stores dislike collectors. :(

...I did not have an original post. The above WAS my original post, save a few spelling errors. I am really sorry if I ticked you guys off. You have a right to be. I said I took the stuff back. I apologize, because obviously my actions were wrong, and you guys knew it. I said I was wrong, shouldn't that be the ultimate satisfaction for you guys? I'll take all of your, "I Told You Sos" and put them to good use, because I NEED them after the whole Kmart situation.

You are caught in a lie, now I suggest you fess up and actually do what you are saying you did. Your original post said that you would sleep better at night because you had the Speeder's and that you only paid $6.50 for them. Don't try to say that it didn't because I saw it, and I am sure that others did also. I just wish I would have quoted you, so I could smack you in the head with it.

By the way, if you would have returned them as you claim, you wouldn't have owed them $6.50. So again you prove that you are just trying to fill in the massive hole that you dug for yourself. So again, not buying it. Tell your BS story to someone that didn't see your original post, m'kay.

I really wish I would have seen that "original post". It is not very mature to change your posts on ppl! And then try to play it off as it never happened. Thumb Wars posts are some proof of that and I beleive JarJar when he said there was another version of that post. Regardless, I work retail, and I hate it when the customer tries to get something for nothing! Nothing ticks me off more. Reguardless if you thought a day after it was a bad thing to do, it should have never happened!!! You should have told them there were signs back there, then when they came back and corrected you, you could have said that you must have read it wrong and left it at that! No one relises how much minor theift can hurt a buisness! Yeah, it might have only been about $6, but if 1000 pll did the same, there is $6000 right there. It adds up like pennies! And there is no way to really tell if you did go back and did the right thing, or if you are trying to save your butt here. I really hope you did. But with the way the thread is digenerating by everyone here . . . . .
