View Full Version : Should Post Counts Stay?

Simple poll I am going to start. Should Post Counts Stay? Perhaps if we turned them off, we'll get more quality posts.

Regardless of whether or not you have post counts, you will still have post padders. I for one do not care if I have a post count or not, I am only here to chat about S.W. and collectable toys. There is no real way to stop post padders, I only hope that others will stop post padding and contribute to whatever topic is at hand. That being said I vote that it does not matter.:d

I really wouldn't care if it did not seem that certain individuals post drivel over and over again or don't use the PM for personal conversations simply to get a higher title and think that it actually means something. I have no more respect for a 1 post member then a 10,000 post member. If you are a cool person who deserves my respect then you will act like one because that is the type of person that you are and not because you are a "Jedi Master".
So, I am going to have to say get rid of titles. I know it is not the best resolution to the current problems, but anything would help.

If getting rid of them means less restrictive rules and more freedom to just be ourselves on the boards then I say get rid of them. However, if the rules are going to just stay as they are then there is no point getting rid of them.
However, without the post count and ranking system we will probably lose many members who only seem to stick around to add to their tally. Hence the boards would become more like a small community again and most of these problems will go away.
Ideally, if you have a small number of mature, intelligent forumites, then you shouldn't even need moderators.

post counts mean diddly-poo. i'm all for having them removed entirely!
we have gone through several incarnations of these forums, and it wasn't until the most recent past version, when posts weren't being counted to individuals who registered after a certain date that post numbers became an issue.
it became somewhat of a caste society, those who couldn't accumulate any post numbers (thus being eternally delegated to padawan status), and those who got their post credits, (thus obtained the rank of jedi council member)
the longest running, re-occurring (hmmmmm, a tad redundant there), problem on these threads have been directly related to post counts.
do away with them all together (imho)

It doesn't really matter if it stays or not. They're good for seeing how often a member posts, etc. but it gets abused alot by members post padding trying to boost up their count.
It wouldn't bother me if they stayed or went.

I should add, if post counts go, so does your user title (ie. Jedi Master). They work off of each other.

Maybe when someone reaches 5000 or something then we should get customizable titles and the post counts dissapear or freeze. Maybe 1000 or 2000 so that it won't take as long?

I say get rid of the confounded thing. It seems, like many have stated, to be the bane of this board. Without the counts there is no "goal" to reach. Therefore it may cut down on the dribble that had been occuring. I care not about a title, I care not about a count. I only care about the releationships that I forge here.
So SirSteve, if the titles go with the posts, does that mean you lose your Admin title???? Just curious, that's all:D

Yeah, but if the titles go away then someones "Banned" title will vanish as well. And that makes me feel all warm and squishy everytime I see it. ;) :D

I say do away with the post count. When I joined up it was for the talk and being able to talk about a shared love of Star Wars. I was hooked on this site and came every day. Lately there seems to be more junk and people fighting than talking about Star Wars. I don't know if this will help or not,but we need to get back to the way it was. So if people didn't have to worry about counts and titles. Then maybe we could have better disscussions about the reason this forum site was started."STAR WARS"
IMO
"Wipe them out. All of them." :p
I don't want a title under my name, "Caesar" is a decent enough title ! :D

Please git rid of the post counts. If it helps, I will mail you a $1.00 donation to help this cause. :)

Doesn't Matter
Maybe they can be moved into a private section only you can access(just for info)
so one day you can look at it and say...wow I have 10,000 posts...big deal...:)

I voted to get rid of the darn things.
As I stated before, your post count is a quantitive measure of how many times you pushed the sumbit reply button. It cannot accurately reflect the value of any contributions you make to the forum. People seem to agree that a few posters seem to annoyingly reply to everything just to bump up their post count. If eliminating the post count will correct this, then I am certainly for it. If this vote fails, I won't be sad or anything, but I will continue to believe that post counts are meaningless.

Not true. You can remove the post count indicator, and it still will keep track of your posts, and the titles will remain. An example: Seriously! Forums. (forums.seriouscommunity.com)

I say get rid of them. They give the impression to members here that someone's post count ranks them higher than others.
It's merely setting up an almost caste like system here.
I've even found myself posting madly to try to get to a certain number.
Perhaps it could just be kept in the user's control panel, that way the "post-counters" would be kept happy.

"Post Counts Be Gone!"
Right JT, but I'm sure that mostly everyone would be just as happy, if the post indicator was gone.

I use the post counts to kinda measure how long someone has been around the boards. Clearly it's not a measure of quality posts, common sense, or intelligence. Find a way to quantify those things and you'll be a billionaire.
If the count goes, then perhaps it could be replaced with a "member since (date)" label instead?

Hmm? There it is. It seems like I've been here much longer than that. Is that date accurate?
After putting some more thought into it, I kind of like having the post count sitting there. It's a measure of how much time I devote/spend/waste on the forums.

I believe post counts will be seen in your profile. There would be 1 User Title, ie. Member. If someone gets banned, it would still say "Banned".

Blatant post-padding. Everyone can look under anyone's user name, and see that it's true. But the fact that you posted that confirms it for everyone.
BTW: This was a rant, not a padded post. ;)

SirSteve, I kind of like having "Sith Initiate" under my name, and would like to eventually even like to be a Master. Is it possible to rank someone on length of membership? For every 6 months or so membership, go up another level?

Is that Aug 2001 date when the new forums replaced the old? How can I figure out when my first post ever was?
Go into your profile, and do a search for all posts. Sort by Ascending, and it's the first one. :)

I just tried that. The last (first actually) one listed is the August 2001 post. I tried accessing the Old Forums but the page doesn't exist.

Thanks. What deep back corner closet did you find that in? And does it need dusting out?

I'm pretty handy with searches, plus I have a direct link to the old forums that actually works. The front page link always leads to an error. A couple seconds of peeking around, and I had the info. It was easy, I just followed the complaints about E1. I knew I would find your name there. ;) :D

I've left a hearty trail of terror in my wake. If only it could have been love...but alas, I can only reflect that which is in front of me...
Now I'm mixing metaphors. It must be getting late....
What do you mean by following the complaints about E1 ?
It says he has 0 posts ! :D
SirSteve, I joined another forum (non-Star Wars) with the same program recently, and they use the custom rank deal at x-amount of posts - can you consider this? Please?
It's so awesome, please consider. :)

I checked the Episode 1 forums for threads complaining about the movie or the charecters. I pulled up his name easily in there. I saw your posts as well Caesar. And I actually saw some halfway positive posts by both Stillakid and JT about E1. I almost had a heart attack seeing those. They are about as rare as a bigfoot sighting now adays. ;) :D
