GalacticHunter.com updated a short while ago, with an article and pictures about the upcoming 2003 Sepratists Vehicles. They have first shot prototype pictures of the Hailfire Droid and the Geonosian Fighter. The E1 Droid Tank is also being re-issued next year. Here's the story and the pictures. :)

Attack Of The Separatists: New Vehicles For '03
12/10/2002 7:58:40 PM | Reported by Mike

There's no doubt that the last battle sequence in Attack Of The Clones lives up to the title. In an epic ground campaign not seen since Empire Strikes Back, the first battle of the Clone Wars featured an armada of lethal machines. We've seen what the Republic Loyalists have to offer with the spectacular Gunship. Now, Hasbro more than evens the odds with the release of three vehicles representing the Separatist forces.

IG Bank Clan "Hailfire" Droid

Late on your bills? The wheeled Inter-Galactic Bank Clan Droid features some major firepower with its hailfire missile launchers. You'll be hard pressed to make your credit card payments on time with this armored bill collector rolling through your door. This photo is of an unpainted prototype.

Geonosian Fighter

The Geonosian Fighter was seen escorting Count Dooku as he escaped to the secret hangar. With a twin needle nosed design inspired by its insectoid makers, the fighter is specifically tailored for a Geonosian pilot. The outer hull is re-enforced with a flexible steel which reduces impact damage. The photo is also of an unpainted prototype sample.

Trade Federation Tank

The Trade Federation ATT is a re-issue of the Episode I version with rotating cannons and firing missiles. The vehicle has seen double duty; first, invading the green plains of Naboo, and now battling on the red planet of Geonosis for the Separatist cause. If you're a new collector or missed this the first time around, it's a great opportunity to obtain one of the cooler vehicles from the EP1 line and get those dioramas going.

I'm not going to bother with the tank picture. It appears to be the same, and the link at GalacticHunter is broken. But from looking at the small picture and the larger on at EE, it's just the same. The Hail Fire Droid is sweet as hell, I wish we had some idea of scale though. The Geonosian Fighter isn't that impressive yet, but it's a prototype after all. 2003 kicks series arse. :)

Um...sweet. Geo Fighter's kinda bland but then again it was pretty much nothing, however the Hailfire Droid....guh... I want it! It looks like all of it's missiles will be able to fire by flipping them from behind! Not only that but it also appears that the wheels will turn and the turrets can be adjusted... The Geo Fighter also appears to possibly have ball joints for the thruster and turret.

The AAT, eh, hope it'll have some more detail added to it. 'Course even if it isn't, I never did find the TPM one.

FINALLY! The HailFire droid is the one vehicle that I wanted after seeing the movie. I can't believe how awesome it looks. I CAN'T WAIT! I hope the paint job is as awesome as the sculpt.

Drool the HailFire looks really awesome! Like I said 2003 still looks good for us collectors! Now I can going on hoping for a great paint job!

The AAT is on GalacticHunter's site, it looks the same as the TPM version but hopefully they'll tweak the paint a little to be more detailed and battle-scarred.

I don't recall ever seeing this guy in AOTC... Can anybody point me to a picture of it?

I'm one happy camper! The AAT was never released in canada, and I never bothered getting one from the US. It will look great next to my E1 Boomer damaged droid army! Cool stuff!

But it surely wasn't in AOTC, as far as I can tell. Can anybody post a pic from E2 with the Tank in it?

The AAT wasn't in AOTC anywhere, it's just being tossed in as a rerelease I guess because of the wave of enemy craft for 2003. Probably also becaused it was just too hard to find during TPM due it being not ordered by stores alot.

I think the AAT was the Acklay of the Episode I toys. It was out there... but not OUT there in numbers or regions. I like the AAT, but I'm still not sold on either of the two new vehicles. The Geonosian fighter just didn't do it for me in the film. The Hailfire Droid... while interesting on screen, to me, makes for a lousy toy.

The Geonosian fighter will be nice chasing down my Gunship.
The Hailfire Droid, all I can say is WOW!
The AAT is also a welcomed addition into my house.

The Geonosian fighter looks pretty cool, the thruster looks rotational and the gun appears have up and down movement only with the possibility of a firing gun muzzle like the gunship. The cockpit ssems quite small looking at it to actually get a whole figure in there so it might be just a glued in head after all whuich would be a shame. I'll still buy a couple though.
Hailfire droid looks odd to me. Is that the back of it? It doesn't look right but over all it does look funky enough to purchase. That's a lot of missiles it carries and they all look to be hand firing ones.
Nice that they're re-issuing the AAT, I scored just one a couple of years back and it's a really nice vehicle, I'd like to get a second because it looks a bit sad on it's billy-no-mates own.

I'm glad some of the re-issues are logical. So what if the AAT wasn't on geonosis, it's a trade fed tank and the trade fed supplied droids for the battle so a little use of imagination expands the realms of the battle to include other trade fed stuff.

(I bet they re-issue the droid fighter too in some shape or form. The walking one would be the best one of course with a tweak to make the joints on the wings stronger and allow more movement in the wings. But the droid fighter is pretty cool too, the "Transformer - robot in disguise" of the star wars galaxy.)

But yes, I approve of all these vehicles so you may procceed to production level Hasbro........

:D

All hail the Hailfire Droid! Hope it really rolls and has firing missles.
A cool feature would be if it had those wheels you could roll it back and let go and it would roll across the floor, what do you think?

Aside from Padme's "B-52" ship from the opening sequence, this is the vehicle I most want from AOTC. Very cool. I had severe doubts about Hasbro doing this after they dropped the ball on the Podracers and the Sith Infiltrator from TPM.

As far as the missiles go though, it would have taken a bit more engineering, but it would have been off-the-hook cool if they fired automatically as the wheels turned. Oh well, you can't have everything...

I thought I was only going to have ONE Hailfire Droid in my big battle diorama!

This is too cool! I too loved this vehicle Stillakid. I can't wait to see it painted!

The Trade Federation Tanks COULD have been on Geonosis. They had them on their starships no doubt. I didn't see them deployed in the movie though. I don't plan on using them in my diorama myself. I do plan to use the E1 Droid Starfighters (the 3 ships wing). They also COULD have been used in the film, but against the Gunships, it looks like what the Separatists needed was more firepower in the air. I believe Jedi Starfighters were also escorting the Republic cruisers and then the gunships they launched. At least the game says Adi Gallia led the Jedi squadron. So I put her figure in a ship for my scene as well.

So while we're in the air...where the heck do you put a Geonosian pilot in that fighter? If it's not a droid fighter, and it wasn't, where is the canopy bubble that fits a figure inside?

UPDATE: perhaps the picture Galaxy Hunter posted (that JarJar copied here) is upside down? The bottom blister might be replaced with a clear plastic that you could see your Geonosian figure through. If so, nice ship! I may buy 5 of these!

Beast
12-11-2002, 04:15 PM
Tycho, from everything I have read the picture is upside down. I don't know if it will have a removable pilot or not. It may be more like the Gungan Ammo Wagon and have a half figure dedicated to it. Since according to the info we have about the ship, the Geonosians are actually hard wired into the ships. :)

Tycho, yes, the fighter is pictured upside down from some reason. I think though they had built-in droids as the pilots, but that would mean the clear canopy was just a redudancy or if they were regular beings, then the canopy posistioning was a real inconvience.

Beast

I believe the info appears in the E2 Cross Sections book, or the big E2 guide. But it mentions that the pilots are actually hard wired into the ships. They go into hybernation states, until the ships are called into duty. They also have this neat little mask that uses the Geonosian's enhanced sense of smell, for to relay vital info to the pilots. By the way, here's what the final painted version "should" look like. It's a picture from StarWars.Com of the movie ship. :)

Here's a thread from a while back, that has a picture from the Incredible Cross Sections book. It doesn't say hard-wired exactly, but it words it that way. And I know that I read elsewhere that they are hard-wired into the ships. I just can't recall where. But the following comments from the Cross Section book pretty much say that they are. Especially the following one. :)

"Cockpit hatch opens for technical servicing and cleaning or repairing a pilot."

That is really cool. You'd think with no requirement of sleep and the idiosyncratic relationship with their ships, that the Geonosians would be immensely superior pilots to say, the Rebellion and Empire's crappy human pilots.

I digress, lest this turn the discussion away from the topic.

Thanks for the info and the link!

Tycho
12-11-2002, 05:25 PM
So what are the Geonosians? Are they sentient beings, or are they bred to be "lessers?" Poggle is obviously sentient and commanding authority. If the rest are drones, why the heck do they need entertainment at an execution arena? Why would they need an arena if they were drones: no native Geonosian would likely break the law - they couldn't think for themselves.

If they were more sentient, than is it PG to show them getting stomped and slashed in half at record numbers?

Will Episode 3 show us Clones getting stomped and slashed in half in record numbers? Or is showing that happen to humans deemed too brutal - but not for 'animal like' races in the galaxy.

How "Imperial" of George Lucas

Tycho, see my "Sophisticated Weaponry does not an advanced civilization make" thread, I was interested in getting a discussion going about the Geonosians, and have many of the same questions you do.

Beast
12-11-2002, 05:45 PM
Tycho, the wingless Geonosians are the drones. If you'll notice, other then the picador and the death cart driver, none of the other Geonosian's in the arena are wingless. The drones are probably off doing menial labor. Just check the StarWars.com databank file about the species. :)

There are two main types of Geonosians: the wingless drones that mostly work as laborers, and the winged aristocrat, which includes royal warriors serving as scouts and providing security to the hive. All Geonosians have a hard, chitinous exoskeleton, elongated faces, multi-jointed limbs, and speak in a strange clicking language.

Hasbro UK - 2003
Reported By - Sneakers Wednesday, December 11th 2002 - 09:41:45 PM

Yesterday i received a copy of the Hasbro Uk plans for 2003.Highlights include the following,

Geonisian fighter - June (no figure)
So either the pilot will be sold seperately or it's just a molded in head. Like Luke in the FX version X-wing.

It's not. For one, can you imagine how small the missles would be if that was a Action Fleet scale Hailfire Droid. Definate choking hazard, and the small size would make it be unable to be sold. Besides, the pictures are associated with the old pre-order pages on Entertainment Earth. So have no fear, they are 4" scale toys. :)

The vehicles are some of the best parts of the 3 3/4" line.

Much of the classic ships are re-hashes of old Kenner molds (because they were great the first time, and they even still are now!)

But look at the great new stuff the prequels have given us as toys:

TPM: Royal Starship, AAT Tank, Droid Fighters, N-1 fighters, Anakin and Sebulba's pod, even the flash speeder with battle damage.

AOTC: SLAVE-ONE, the Jedi Starfighter, the Republic Gunship, Anakin and Zam's airspeeders, and now the Hailfire Droid and Geonosian fighter.

- and all of it with the newness that we appreciate in the TIE Bomber since this was that ship's first run!

Man, I love Star Wars toys! :)

Tycho,

I was just in Target this morning (in another fruitless search for anything new) when I took a closer look at the Action Fleet line which I don't collect. I did consider picking up the landspeeder though as it appears to be scaled almost correctly to sit next to the vintage Sandcrawler. Do use only the larger vehicles in your setups or do you allow for inter-collection mingling to create that sense of scale, etc? Like those little sets of mini-Jawas I picked up a long time ago. They look great standing next to the Sandcrawler.

Stillakid, on very rare occasions I'll use MicroMachines in my scenes. I'm a big fan of vehicles being made for the 3 3/4" line, even if they're off-scale, such as using the regular snowspeeders versus the AT-AT. To me, it's a celebration of fully interactive TOYS that are representative of the universe I crave to play in.

That being said, I used the Action Fleet Gungan Sub to put in my Opee Sea Killer's mouth, as it's the perfect scale, and the Opee is an awesome sculpt and functional toy - just not at the 3 3/4" scale level. It's nice at least having a sub. Now I'd just like a Sando Aqua Monster the size of the "Ultimate Godzilla" toy to complete the scene and stick it all in an aquarium with simulated water and "BattleBag" fish. It would be very different for one of my SW displays. That's a fact and a plus in my eyes!

I also own the small Metallic Collection (?) Royal Starship. The idea is to do the Tatooine Duel sequence in a collectibles wall display case, having Maul suspended over his Sith Speeder and Qui-Gon and Anakin in one scene (he's flipping off ;) ) and then placing the perfectly-fitting Tatooine Duel Cinema Scene on the level below that. The final level is split into two frames, one having just the Maul Tatooine figure (his back to you) watching the suspended Royal Starship take off. The final 1/2 scene is "Anakin Skywalker: meet Obi-Wan Kenobi," which includes R2-D2 amongst the current and future Jedi.

(I have 3 Tatooine wall cases like this that document Anakin meeting Padme in Watto's shop, the fight with Sebulba and Anakin leading them home to meet his mom, R2 meeting 3PO, Qui-Gon testing Anakin's blood, Darth Maul launching probes, Anakin leaving home, and Darth Maul trying to run the young Skywalker over with his Sith Speeder, displayed prior to the case I described above. Hopefully, I'll get to showcase an R1-G4 droid, as well as some various Gonks in Watto's shop in that case. The reversed Cantina Deluxe pack makes a great countertop for the POTJ Anakin to sit on when he asks Padme "Are you an Angel?")

Last but not least, I love the detail on the new Millennium Falcon action fleet ship they just put out. They also seem to have sold out. I might try to get one much later, but thought it would be cool if they made Recovery Room Luke and Leia, and to have the twins and R2-D2 and C-3PO watching the ship leave to find Han.
Doing that scene requires the right figures, as well as regulates what kind of wall unit I might have to have custom made to fit even the Action Fleet Falcon. However, there are smaller Falcons that MM made over the course of their run, and I'll consider those, too. But meanwhile, without these cool non-resculpts being made from The Empire Strikes Back, I have no where to go with these figures. Customizing them seems pointless, as I will rejoice tenfold if I see them made as official Hasbro merchandise, Luke complete with a repairable hand, similar to what they did with the latest Saga Bespin Luke. There's still a chance in 2003, but I'd really like to see this by 2004 for sure.

Ugh, I'm so sick of buying vehicles! Don't get my wrong, it's great that they keep coming out, it's great that they keep looking amazing. But I'm totally running out of space!!!!! So much so that I'm trying my best to focus only on Classic Vehicles. (My wavering resolve though has led me to pick up the ATOC Slave 1 ---- hey, it's sort or classic. And Zam's Speeder --- it's green. A green Star Wars ship? Interesting . . . and it's so cheap, too.) But no more! No more Prequal ships! Ever.

That said ---- if the genosian fighter CAN in fact hold a figure, AND is painted in that really cool and unique to the Star Wars Universe copper color ---- it will indeed by very hard to resist. Oh, who am I trying to kid, of course I'll have to pick this one up! But ONLY if it meets the specifications above.

12-13-2002, 05:54 PM
Copper? I thought the 'unique to star wars' colors were black, white, grey and brown? Honestly all the toys when viewed en masse seem to blur into a muddy grey brown color, a bit like plasicine really when you roll all the colors into a big ball they go grey brown. I would have said the geonosian fighter was more of a russet brown than a copper, perhaps a burnt umber, raw sienna maybe........ :crazed:

Mark2D2, the new Slave One you bought is seriously the best of the line in a long time! :)

Did you open it up? I have all the ships up to date, and Jango Fett's Slave-One is more fun than the Jedi Starfighter, the TIE Bomber, or almost anything since the Falcon and the AT-AT.

Hasbro's vehicles have totally kept the fun in the line for me!

I'm with you there. If it wasn't for the vehicles, collecting only figures would get bland for me. It's a drag, though, that more and better playsets haven't come along. The last decent one was the Queen's Starship and only because it did double-duty.

Tycho --- Yeah, of course I opened it. I open pretty much everything now. I'm very happy with the Slave 1. The action features are all pretty nifty. I especially like the way they are "hidden." That said it never quite knocked my socks off like the TIE BOMBER did. Or I imagine the SANDCRAWLER will.

Jargo -- the ship looked copper to me. I've never seen much Copper in the Star Wars Universe . . . . so I'll probably pick it up.

Still, what I really want is a Bespin Twin Pod Cloud Car. Sigh . . .

Tycho
12-15-2002, 02:38 AM
I'd like a Twin Pod Cloudcar myself - so long as it's retooled a little and shoots missles to simulate lasers it shot across the Falcon's bow.

They should be well-hidden in the airscoop style flaring though - since I agree with the collectors that want their ships to look authentic.

But I also find firing stuff at my figures fun! The missles will make the ship sell a little better to kids, too. And I totally think kids are a large portion of Hasbro's market share. About 50% now. I think it's just the adults who are more stable, steady customers. But right now, talk to a lot of kids and they'll tell you Star Wars is IN!

The more the merrier. I find that cool - like I find firing missles - and non-cloned Cloud Car pilot figures (2 different heads, or arm poses or something of that nature).

What? You don't like those big, add-on guns, ala Cloud City Playset? ;)

Whenever a new toy shows up at our house, the first thing my son wants to know is if it shoots anything. Slave I quickly became one of his favorites.

Tycho
12-15-2002, 07:14 PM
Obviously, I never outgrew that stage myself! :D

However, many collectors rave about the TIE Bomber being their favorite vehicle because it is so authentic (save for size I suppose) and it actually does fire, exactly and only the way it did in the movie. Personally, I wish it fired foreward ship-to-ship missles to simulate lasers as well - it'd make it more fun to play with (so long as they were concealed).

Thinking about other ships that shoot the way they are supposed to:

Jango's Slave-One actually doesn't - his torpedo tubes are on the lower side, and his siesmic charges release a bit hire from his ship's ventral side - but everything's so much fun to play with and it's hidden so well - no one cares. Jango's Slave-One is a superior toy.

The F/X X-wing does not fire a torpedo from the right location (s).

I'm not sure about the Y-wing's bomb. I think that's ok - it was really there, and a cargo hatch ran by the astrodroid places one bomb at a time in the launch position - though the ship fires torpedos from the front 2 tubes, just like an X-wing. Y-wings were designed to carry more firepower.

Darth Vader's TIE (mine) has grey missles that are pretty well concealed, so I love this ship with its hidden pop-out guns. It can look authentic, and be fun to play with. I understand that people with bright green "firepower" in the wrong place might've been frustrated, but to me, Vader's TIE is one of the best vehicles.

The AT-AT has great and authentically hidden fire-power. Just not a lot of it for a big vehicle.

It'd be cool if a retooled Falcon shot something.

The Snowspeeder's harpoon gun is awesome! Longer rope might've helped though.

The AAT tank fires exactly the way it should, and with 4 missles at action figure level, plus floaty wheels that help it quickly run over Gungans, it's definitely a fun piece.

The N-1 fighter is perfect. Too bad you only get one shot!

The Droid fighter's remote triggers are even fun! Their blasts could have been red though.

The Jedi Starfighter's weapons are totally unauthentic, and you lose 1/2 the ship to launch them. The Jedi's Delta-7's have weapons - 4 lasers that can fire from their positions in the 'airscooped' notches on the front of the craft. The ship could have fired at least 2 red missles from there...

The Republic Gunship is perfect. The sideguns might've been included, or the wing bubbles might've also fired, but this ship packs the appropriate fire power once you have everything loaded. Maybe the missles on the doors could've had a launching mechanism, or the wing-bombs could have dropped - but you can do all that manually during play anyway.

What else shoots?

The STAP - which makes play with it a lot of fun, too!

I like firing missles!

In case this hasn't been covered already, and for those interested - a recent issue of one of the major toy mags (either Lee's or Tomart's; can't recall exactly which) shows a fairly large picture of the Geonosian fighter with the pilot standing next to the ship - full and complete with all of his limbs. Quite cool looking as well, I might add.

Well that resolves that. The head is cool with his little mask in close ups, the hose comng down from the mask attaches to the dashboard of the cockpit by the looks of the close ups. I think the sculpt of the ship is great despite the added swing out cannon that are non movie. But then the starfighter has blast off wings so it's not really that big a deal. Just a cool toy I think and i too can't wait for it. Two of these babies escorting Dooku on his speeder flying over the top of the droid army will look very very cool. And it isn't going to be too expensive either by the looks of prices for it I've seen at several places. Even better. :)

Very, very cool.

Looks like my Cantina Aliens will soon have a new ship to fly around in.
