Nothing wrong with liking Prince. The guy has a lot of talent, and can sure play the guitar. I'm not really into his music though, but I do like some of his tunes.
Edit: Ah, looks like JT beat me to it with pretty much the same thing. Prince put on a pretty good show at the Super Bowl a year or two ago. Certainly better than the Janet Jackson incident anyway.

The reference to the rap band using slayer is exactly why I hate rap, they have to steal other bands music to get noticed. no creativity...its all about the super ego and look at what I have...who cares...its primitive and unremarkable and delinquent and promotes crime.

I listen to every bloody thing (except Beyonce :)). Okay, there's a bit more I won't listen to, but it's mostly the prefab pop you seem to be lumping everything in with.
Right now, "Soul of a Man" by Blind Willie Johnson. There's only one existing photo of the man. You don't get much less MTV than that.
JT, not to nitpick, but are you sure the slim box is the first version of Pandora's Box? I got it when it first came out, and I wouldn't describe the box as particularly slim. I know I've seen a much slimmer one since and, when I had to replace mine due to an unfortunate incident involving a drunken college roommate loaning it to someone else and basically destroying two of the discs , I got the small box that's the size of a 2-disc case.
I could be wrong about the slimmer version not being around first, though.

The reference to the rap band using slayer is exactly why I hate rap, they have to steal other bands music to get noticed. no creativity...its all about the super ego and look at what I have...who cares...its primitive and unremarkable and delinquent and promotes crime.Yet one of the greatest bands of all time, Led Zeppelin, got famous with music they ripped off from others, mostly black blues players. And no one wanted to listen to "that n***er music" until Elvis started playing it.
I certainly see what you are saying about a lot of the rap, but just because they use samples and such doesn't mean there is no creativity. Putting together a sample heavy album like Paul's Boutique by The Beastie Boys is no easy feat. Plus, much of the creativity in rap is in the lyrics and the lyrical style. I tend not to care for the type of rap that is all about gangstas and hos, has too much of "Yeah. Uh.", or videos with all the rap cliches of cars, dope, bling, booty and boobs.
If you watch one of the documentaries about the origins of hip hop and rap, perhaps you'll have a different perspective. Listen to a song like "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. If you want something more in line with your tastes, the Judgment Night soundtrack paired rappers with hard rock artists. Ice-T & Slayer did a pretty good song called "Disorder". Others on there that I like include Helmet & House of Pain - "Just Another Victim", Mudhoney & Sir Mix-a-Lot - "Freak Momma", and my favorite, Del the Funky Homosapien & Dinosaur Jr - "Missing Link".

MINISTRY
THRILL KILL CULT
SLAYER
ANGKOR WAT
PRONG
NITZER EBB
NAPALM DEATH
SUCIDAL TENDENCIES
BAD RELIGION
I've listened to all of these, but I can't say that I'm big fans of any of them. Except for Ministry, which I was really into back in 1992-93.
The only bands, along those lines, that I listen to somewhat regularly now would be:
Fear Factory
In Flames
Prick
Nightwish
Type O Negative
However, my tastes go through cycles and these days I've been (legally) downloading more mid-1990s alternative rock than anything else.
Recent MP3s I've purchased:
Foo Fighters - their entire debut album
Weezer - Pinkerton (full album, in fact I'm listening to it right now)
Semisonic - If I Run, Down in Flames and Across the Great Divide (all off of their 1996 album Great Divide)
The Killers - Spaceman (the only modern song I really like right now, awesome song too!)
I think next on my list is Spacehog: Resident Alien and Hum: You'd Prefer An Astronaut.

Oh yeah, I forgot to talk about Ministry. I remember when Psalm 69 was big. I've been thinking of getting a couple of tracks from that. Last year I was listening to the Retro-Active station on Comcast's Music Choice and they played an older new wavish Ministry song called "Revenge" that I kind of liked. I've had it sitting in a wish list ever since then.

KNAC.com metal feed, not sure what's playing right now, don't recognize it.
So, on my drive down to San Diego to meet Bobafrett after he donated a kidney to Tycho, I remembered how poorly the tapes I had for comic-con worked out on the drive, and got an MP3 player and tape deck adapter for the car. It's only a 1gb, I filled it up with Metallica, AC-DC, Megadeth, Judas Priest, and Dethklok. It was good, but not enough variety. So over the past 2 days, I've been going through my collection finding more driving music. Unfortunately, the first playlist I came up with filled the player to the brim after down-converting the Metallica to 128kb quality before I had even put any Rolling Stones in, so I decided to down-convert everything during sync to 64kbps, and was able to fit 31 hours, 448 songs, into the player with 100mb left over in storage space. This list has everything in my library that I consider playable for driving, not just metal or rock either. Everything from AC-DC to ZZ Top (cheesy, but true).
The reference to the rap band using slayer is exactly why I hate rap, they have to steal other bands music to get noticed. no creativity...its all about the super ego and look at what I have...who cares...its primitive and unremarkable and delinquent and promotes crime.Yeah, whereas punk rock is NOTHING like that. :p Primative? A lot of it is. Promoting delinquencies and crime? How about violence against others, destruction of property, and doing heroin for starters. I'll take Public Enemy over The Exploited any day of the week, and I own material from both.
JT, not to nitpick, but are you sure the slim box is the first version of Pandora's Box? I got it when it first came out, and I wouldn't describe the box as particularly slim. The Pandora's Box v1 I have is a tall cardboard box that's narrower than most box sets (not that I have the box anymore, lost it in a move, but the booklet is the same shape and outer design), and had 3 individual jewel cases and the aforementioned booklet within. I've stopped loaning out my CDs, it's become too difficult to replace them for that very reason, nobody's careful enough anymore. My poor Batman '89 Prince disc needs to be filled in so bad from scratches.

Snowblind, Black SabbathGood tune, though, from that album, I like "Supernaut" and "Changes" better.
Currently I'm really liking the song Starlight by Muse. :thumbsup:Another great tune. I bought that from iTunes, as well as a couple other Muse songs - "Time Is Running Out" and "Hysteria".
The 10 songs I've purchased from iTunes with the highest play count:
10. "Night on Fire" - VHS or Beta
9. "Edge of the Ocean" - Ivy
8. "Loser" - Beck
7. "One Armed Scissor" - At the Drive-In
6. "Into the Fire" - Sarah McLachlan
5. "The 1234" - The Start
4. "Smile Like You Mean It" - The Killers (listened to this one last night)
3. "Amos Moses" - Jerry Reed
2. "Rock 'n Roll Woman" - Buffalo Springfield
1. "Money City Maniacs" - Sloan
This is not necessarily reflective of which are my favorite, since I put my purchased songs on shuffle quite a bit, though I know I've often started listening with one of these tunes, except for "Into the Fire". I actually prefer the other two songs that I've purchased from that album - "Drawn to the Rhythm" and "Shelter".

Speaking of What's Next to the Moon, have you heard the Mark Kozelek album What's Next to the Moon? It's all AC/DC covers, but done as slow, acoustic ballads. I'm not necessarily a big fan of Beck. I remember when that song was new, and I liked it. However, I didn't really hear anything else from it, and didn't feel motivated to buy it based on that song alone. Odelay had two or three songs I had heard, and I think I got it through Columbia House. I've never really listened to it that much. Next time I heard him was on SNL for one of his next couple albums, and I didn't really like what he performed then. That was either Mutations or Seachange, or both. I just looked up the songs he performed on SNL in 1999 and 2003, and none of the sound clips grab my attention at the moment.
When he came out with Guerro, I was listening to the Music Choice alternative channel a lot, and I really liked "E-Pro", and the the "Missing" remix on Guerolito, "Heaven Hammer". The Information had a couple good songs that I heard a lot, and his performance on SNL in 2006 was really cool with the marionettes mimicking what the band was doing.
So, I have Odelay, and 5 Beck songs from iTunes:
"Loser"
"E-Pro"
"Heaven Hammer (Missing) [Air Remix]"
"Nausea"
"Think I'm In Love"
These days, I find it harder to get into entire albums if I haven't heard it first. Plus it is cheaper to just buy the songs I know I like than buy a full CD I rarely listen to. Maybe I have adult onset ADD.

Get it, it's excellent. More dance-orientated than their previous stuff, with heavier bass and some Depeche Mode-ish electro. But it's still obviously their own unique style. I love it, and Ulysses is my favourite single for months.
But I'm not getting to listen to it as much as I'd like, as I've also got new releases from Morrissey and Lloyd Cole (my two favourite artists ever) this week.

lol I heard it too!!! I was in electronics a few months ago, I think around Christmas, and I heard the part right before it kicks from the piano to the drums, etc. It works really well with that commercial. What's funny is that my buddy Dave from Cali called me like two days later and the EXACT same thing happened to him. At Target, heard it and was drawn to it like a Siren. lol

I have some neighbors downstairs who tend to blare nothing but really awful, repetitive rap music. We've bonked heads about it on a few ocassions, but my main gripe is playing it at 4 in the morning, which he doesn't do anymore. During the day, I can just turn up my TV and drown it out.
So, I blare some fiesty, sassy salsa dancing stuff and or loud ambient icelandic rock. It sometimes helps.

As for loud neighbors, there's a room in the dorm that often plays extremely loud techno with the bass turned way, way up, so it hurts my head even after I close the door. Gah. I have no idea why anyone would need to listen to music that loudly.

Bad thing about Beck: he puts out albums more often than anyone except Ryan Adams.Actually, he hasn't released that many. He just seems to have released them in bunches at times. Two of the songs you listed there were from albums I hadn't heard of, as they were indie releases shortly after Mellow Gold. After Midnight Vultures, it was three years until Sea Change, and another three until Guero. He's had three releases since then, but one was just remixes of the Guero album.
"Lost Cause" was one of the songs he did on SNL. That is probably the time I watched and didn't care for it. Listening to the clip now, I guess it is all right. "A**hole" is okay, and "Rowboat" sounds a bit too twangy for me.
So, I listed my top 10 iTunes purchases with the most plays. Four of them were also among the first ten purchases I made.
Nirvana - "You Know You're Right"
Jonatha Brooke & The Story - "No Better"
The Start - "The 1234"

Buffalo Springfield - "Rock 'n Roll Woman"

Badmotorfinger is quite good, Superunknown is better, and Down on the Upside is only slightly less good than Superunknown.
But as for me, I finally tracked down an illicit MP3 of the famous (or infamous) live version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight" where Elvis cracks a joke about the bald head on some dude in the audience and spends the rest of the song bursting out in fits of uncontrollable laughter. With the exception of "Big Dumb Sex," which is okay.I just listened to clips from Ultramega OK and Louder Than Love, and a lot of it sounded all right. They even had a Grammy nomination for Ultramega OK. The first song on that one, "Flower", sounds pretty good, but I didn't care for much of the rest. Louder Than Love seems more consistent. Of the four big Seattle bands from that era (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden), Soundgarden was the one I was least into, and I still don't own anything from them except for what was on the Singles soundtrack. I might be inclined to get their greatest hits or some selected tracks someday.

If this track is any indication, the new album should be just as strong as Carnavas.

Just got turned on to Muse. I'd heard them before with "Starlight" on the radio, but they didn't mention the artist (I hate that)
Recently saw the video that comes with the DVD of "Twilight" (my nieces are all ga-ga over that:rolleyes:) with Muse live doing "Super-massive Black Hole"
Very talented musicians. That Bassist is just bad-as*!! The guitarist has a Thermin (Jimmy Page) installed on his guitar to make some cool noises. Not too shabby with his chord technique either.
Haven't heard a band that good for a while. Modern, dreamy yet aggressive. Definitely not bubble-gum typical 90125, Gossip Girl theme type sounding band.
They should really take off now with the popular movie.

Agreed. Back in '93, a friend gave me a tape that had some music from their band, Pearl Jam's Vs. (before it had been released I think), and some filler, that included three songs from the Judgment Night soundtrack. "Just Another Victim" by Helmet & House of Pain, "Freak Momma" by Mudhoney & Sir Mix-a-Lot, and "Missing Link" by Del the Funky Homosapien & Dinosaur Jr. I now have purchased "Just Another Victim", "Missing Link" and the Slayer & Ice-T song "Disorder". "Missing Link" is my favorite of the bunch.

They have a song called "Unemployed" that references a bunch of infamous serial killers (I guess by definition, they'd all be infamous). The album closes with "Ballad of Ed Gein", who probably was an inspiration for the guy in Silence of the Lambs that made the skin suit.

Right off I can think of a few songs I have that are themes to TV shows - "Teardrop" by Massive Attack (House), "Here With Me" by Dido (Roswell) and all those Who songs for the C.S.I. shows if you want more power ("Won't Get Fooled Again", "Baba O'Riley", and "Who Are You").

Won (from Austria, how appropriate) an auction for the Predator soundtrack. I've always liked listening to it in between the dialogue of the movie. And track #27 has part of the most famous bad-word quote from the film as its title. It'll make a good background for me when I'm trying to get papers graded faster! :D

I've probably mentioned Astreaux World before. It is an internet station that plays ambient, electronic, new age and space music. I've been listening to it a lot again lately. The guy who created the station passed away at the end of last year. Now, another fan of the station and member of the Astreaux World forums has taken it over and is keeping it going as an ongoing tribute to the guy. So, the station has been updated for the first time in a long time, with lots of music being added.
I first started listening to the station back in 2002. At the time, I was into collecting the Star Wars CCG cards. I'd go to town and buy some, and then come home and sort through them while listening to Astreaux World.

Bad, preceded by Beat It and PYT. The rest will be Smooth Criminal, The Way You Make Me Feel, Black or White, Rock with You, Dirty Diana, Man in the Mirror, Thriller, Jam, Remember the Time, Don't Stop till you get Enough, Wanna be Startin Somethin, and Another Part of Me. The last song in the playlist is "Gone Too Soon", the system chose it, I'm actually not going to play it because I don't really like slower MJ, but it's an ironic choice.

It's a sample of an old gospel song called either "Heaven's Aeroplane" or "The Airplane Ride," depending on which source you believe. The album is very, very good. She sort of got pigeonholed as an alternative artist based on "One of Us," but she's definitely more of a blues/soul gal in the same vein as Janis Joplin.

I'm jamming to my 200-song Billy Ocean playlist. It's way too short to fully appreciate the masterful artistic genius behind such classics of musical achievement as "When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going." Can you imagine how badly Jewel of the Nile would've stunk without that song? I mean, without that stirring theme song, Kathleen Turner might never have been noticed, and someone else would've been cast in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Album: This is Somewhere by Grace Potter and Nocturnals. Its a couple of years old, but a good album Grace Potter as great voice and Scott Tournet is a great guitar player.
Song: A Looking in View by Alice in Chains. New Alice in Chains! Yea! The band as a new lead singer and a new album coming out this fall. William DuVall, the new guy, has a great voice. It's not the same as Layne Staley's, but he harmonizes with Jerry Cantrell that same way. So there's no mistaking who this band is. I'm so excited.

Rammstein - Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da.
My favorite Rammstein album to date. These guys rock. I've been a fan since 93 and they never disappoint.
Bon Jovi - The Circle
Always liked Bon Jovi. It never fails that when a new album is released I know that something is going to happen in my life that will test my character. The timing with the Circle is no different. Bon Jovi's music always encourages me. For that reason I'm always going to "Keep the Faith" with Jon, Richie, Tico, and David. But I've gotta be honest. I think the group peaked about three albums ago. So much of the Circle sounds derivative of songs in other Bon Jovi albums that it just seems like a half-assed effort. The exception is "When We Were Beautiful". Very melancholy, and Powerful. "Fast Cars" is the foil to When We Were Beautiful. A crap-fest worthy of Hanson. Maybe its by design and each song is meant to be a sequel of the top hits. I don't know. Their sound has changed substantially. They've become very Pop-Rock-ish. The guitarwork is reminescent of U2. I can hear a lot of Joshua Tree in it. Interesting evolution, but for their 25th anniversary I was expecting more.

Do you actually have that on CD? I was going to get it, but it became a "super rare collector's item" practically overnight.

Sitting On The Dock In The Bay by Otis Redding. He died 42 years ago today in a plane crash in Madison, Wi.
