Ummm.....ahhhh....early version of the song? ::):Riiiiiight

Anyway, I'm listening to my Ozzy playlist. I realized that I hadn't gathered the other sites' questions for the last round and I was sending in the next round in a few hours, so I jumped to the computer and hauled through all the sites. I need to cull my list though, there's sites that haven't participated for almost a year, slows down the works. The song playing now is Flying High Again.

So, literally ANYTHING metal in my computer, and it brings up the next track on the playlist. Wow, super lazy, Windows Media Player. I'll force another shuffle... Chemical Warfare, Slayer. Gotta post this one, my all time favorite Metallica song came on before: One, loved it back 20+ years ago and I still love it now.First time I heard that was when I saw the video on the Canadian music video program Good Rockin' Tonight. Then within a year or two after that I was up in Alaska and someone was describing this book he was reading, Johnny Got His Gun, and realized that it was what I remembered from the Metallica video. So, I read the book after he was done with it. Still haven't seen the movie, though.

Ah, here we go, Funky President, James Brown.

That track came up on my mp3 player today while driving, after I listened to it, I had to queue up more Metallica since it wasn't likely to come up on shuffle (there's over a thousand songs on there), so I pulled up all of Kill 'Em All.

Gotta love the big bands!Yeah, I remember the local news/talk station used to play music in the afternoon many years ago, and that was one song that I heard frequently and really liked. I'd buy it off of iTunes, but I would want to be sure it is the same version. Seems like there were a lot of different versions and remakes the last time I looked, and didn't really take the time to try to find the right one.

Another song I recall the station playing back then was "A Taste of Honey" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP7EzJtXWQM

I might like Miller's best because 1) I've heard that version the most and/or 2) that is the arrangement that we played in jazz band in high school.

MSP, I'd recommend giving Sing Sing Sing a listen, great old tune with a nice long drum solo :evildrummerguy: it was used a few years ago in a commercial...maybe for a candy bar I think?

I might like Miller's best because 1) I've heard that version the most and/or 2) that is the arrangement that we played in jazz band in high school. It was definitely a Glenn Miller version. I looked on iTunes after my last post and saw versions with two different lengths, and of varying quality of sound. On one you could even hear the crackling sound of an old vinyl record. I think if I pick one of the longer versions with the sound I like the best, I should be happy.

Today, I listened one of the Genius Mixes on my iTunes - New Wave Mix. First song up was "She Talks in Stereo" by Gary Myrick & The Figures. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FB0GMfFeTjs

Perhaps my favorite Blondie song came up in the mix - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWhkbDMISl8&ob=av2n

What time period for Miles? It is mostly music that is similar to Miles Davis, you create a station on Pandora by giving it a seed - song, artist, album, or style - and it plays music similar to that seed across 40 different criteria. The way their licensing works, they can't actually play more than a few Miles Davis tunes per hour, so there's not a lot of Miles Davis in here, but ironically while typing this one came up, and now that I think about it, most of the music of his they play is from his sextet days in the late '50s.

No love for the Scorpions, JT? Their non-80s stuff is generally quite good, even if their output from that decade is a bit "hairy."

BCJ, you should listen to the very first Chicago album. It's like a totally different band from the stuff they've done since; very jazzy in a "real" jazz way, not a smooth jazz way. Pandora doesn't have much of the later Miles stuff in my station, I'm tempted to add a second station based around something like Big Fun, but I suspect any derivatives it produces from that seed will be unbearable - it's very hard to find stuff like that which works for me, like Coltrane's Interstellar Space, I know it's well-liked but to me almost all of it is nails on chalkboard.

Worth a try, I suppose.

JT, I'm not trying to sound snide or anything, but could the "insincerity" you're perceiving in the vocals maybe be a result of English being not Schenker's native tongue? No dude! It's that he's singing into an upper range through his nose, I didn't even know they were German when I was a kid, I just knew they sucked. Even their best song at the time, Rock You Like a Hurricane, the vocals aren't struggling due to language, but due to being done by a total poser. :p Plus, it's not like the guitar has a language barrier, it's thin because it's thin and relies on action to get past range. The vocals are thin with limited range, the guitar plays to that too and then gets over-produced for albums, they went for a specific kind of hair metal pop appeal and got it, but at the sacrifice of sounding like men, instead they're Kraft cheese.

That M&Ms commerical has permanently changed my impressions of this song that just came on the radio, "Hungry Eyes" by Eric Carmen.

How patriotic. So S&SF is the AC/DC hit "It's a Long Way to the Top" of its day? ;) (The only song to successfully incorporate the bagpipes.)Hmmm... hadn't thought of it that way, but I suppose it is/was. :triumphant:

- John Williams 80th birthday
- Clerks soundtrack
- Best of/Greatest Hits (U2, Motels, Alice in Chains, Queen, INXS, Kool & the Gang, Guns & Roses, Sarah McLachlan, Depeche Mode)

More classroom work means more music in CD form:
- Best of Run DMC, Fleetwood Mac, Living Colour, Bangles, Garbage
- Essential Hollywood
- Dark Knight Rises soundtrack
- Joe Cool's Blues

So you listened to Cult of Personality 12 times then turned on something else?

Don't forget "Open Letter (to a Landlord)," "Glamour Boys," "Middle Man," "Funny Vibe." Most of the rest of the tracks I hadn't heard of before. I'm always surprised that "What's Your Favorite Color?" wasn't included.

And to be honest, several times I will jump to track #2, since "CoP" is #1.

Today, at a picnic in the park, the music was heavily '80s, with the standards. But there were some less-played ones that I haven't heard in some time: Haircut 100, Katrina & the Waves, Dream Academy, Bowie (not "Let's Dance" ).

I owe Alanis Morissette an apology. I have been one of those "snobs" who's blasted her song "Ironic" for not really being so ironic in its examples (which are mainly just unfortunate circumstances). I just heard the lyric "It's like meeting the man of my dreams/And then meeting his beautiful wife," and I finally "got" what she was referring to. Jilted and scorned lovers of married men from TV sitcoms should get a break on grammatical and figurative accuracy in songs, IMHO. My bad, Alanis.

It's Tricky, Run DMC. I just used a coupon to get half off the Greatest Hits '02 disc via Amazon MP3. I forgot how much these tunes are part of my youth.

I had a $2 Amazon MP3 credit from buying a ticket on Fandango, but I never got around to using it. It expired 8/31. I was hoping to find something that I couldn't find on iTunes.

I was getting a lot of MP3 credits from using slower shipping on my Amazon Prime orders and filled a lot of stuff I was interested in - they've discontinued that program, so I just keep an eye out for whatever I can get - this one was an Amazon Local Deals voucher and expires tomorrow, I would have pulled the trigger earlier but I've actually had a hard time finding new albums to buy into.

BTW, it's now Rock Box, same album.

I almost feel like one of those spambots by posting this, but a second cousin of mine (I don't want to reveal my secret identity by saying exactly who, but those on the Book of Faces already know :p) plays in Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics, who have this week's iTunes Single of the Week ("My Dear"). I checked it out earlier than normal because of the family connection (I usually get to the Single of the Week just before it stops being free on Monday), and I was frickin' blown away by it, and I've been listening to it over and over this evening. Very awesome 60s/70s-style throwback R&B that reminds me a lot of Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, or some Adele, Duffy, and Joan Osborne.

Don't want to link to the iTunes page, but here's the music video: http://gemcorecords.com/?p=383
