To be fair, those Packer fans are entirely right. That was a horrible call, how they can be sure there was possession by offense is NUTS, not to mention missing the offense pushed the defense before the catch. And I didn't even watch the game! :D

Tool is like the emotion of metal without the teeth-gnashing aggression.

However, if there hadn't been a bad interference call against Seattle a bit earlier, GB might not have even taken the lead to begin with.

Killed By Death, Motorhead. It's funny, there's a few Motorhead songs that really work on their own like this one and Ace of Spades - they don't have to be brilliant but they make a great punch, and then there's the 90% of the other songs which are fine but very samey-same.

However, Elvis was listed as being on at the same time again this week, and I did see that it was on this time.

A few years ago I noticed that Austin City Limits sometimes had some music I would like, but I never think to check, and never know when it is on. Just checking now, and it looks like they had Sonic Youth and The Black Keys on the most recent show. That is something that I might have liked, but would have had to find the time to watch it because I wouldn't be staying up that late to watch it.

I'd heard that Sony Intrada had done a limited edition run of this score, and then discovered by accident that they sell it for the same price through Amazon (meaning it qualified for free shipping and I could use my Amazon gift card balance).

Holy. Freaking. Crap. This score is amazing. Much better than expected; there's a lot that isn't on the previous soundtrack (or the expanded re-release) that either wasn't used or is sort of buried beneath dialogue and sound effects. I would highly, highly, highly recommend it to any fans of movie scores, Transformers, or synth-driven prog rock.

A professor once said there isn't anything ironic in that song, it should be called "_hit happens."The professor was probably right. Well, here's my take on it:

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day NOT IRONIC
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay NOT IRONIC
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late NOT IRONIC
Isn't it ironic
Don't you think?

It's like rain on your weddin' day NOT IRONIC
It's a free ride when you've already paid COULD BE SOMEWHAT IRONIC
It's the good advice that you just didn't take NOT IRONIC
And who would've thought, it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
Well, isn't this nice NOT IRONIC; IN FACT, IT'S EXPECTED
And isn't it ironic
Don't you think?

Well life has a funny way of sneakin' up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's goin' right, right
And life has a funny way nobody helpin' you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face NOT IRONIC AT ALL

A traffic jam when you're already late NOT IRONIC
A no smoking sign on your cigarette break COULD BE SOMEWHAT IRONIC
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife COULD BE SOMEWHAT IRONIC
It's meetin' the man of my dreams
And then meetin' his beautiful wife, umm NOT IRONIC
And isn't it ironic
Don't you think?
A little too ironic
And yeah, I really do think

And well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And life has a funny, funny way of helpin' you out
Helpin' you out NOT IRONIC AT ALL

But if I were the songwriter:

An old man turned ninety-eight
He played and won the lottery for his first time ever, after complaining nobody ever wins it, and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Flypaper Brand Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late, for criminal named On-Time

It's like rain on your weddin' day, when you held it in the Sahara in the dry season, in order to avoid all rainout possibilities
It's a free ride when you've already paid in the toll lane, being a notorious cheapskate
It's the good advice that you just didn't take about attending a free Advice Taking conference

etc. etc.

So... I've been listening to Riding A Black Unicorn by Voltaire. Anyway, while listening I just happened to come across this picture of Han Solo on top of Swift Wind from She-Ra.

28233

Needless to say, one thing lead to another and I ended up writing down lyrics for a "Weird Al" type "Star Wars/Han Solo" themed parody of Voltaire's song. I'm calling it Flying A Big White Falcon. Now we just need to find someone with some music/voice talent to record it. :D

The dark side falls on outer space
Ensnaring all without a trace
And I try to live
Smuggling spice on a lease
I tried to get up on my feet
Been so long, shackled down on my knees
For somewhere deep inside, I know
The force favors the bold

So tonight, I'm flying a big white falcon
Through the trench of Tarkin's exploding death star
And I shoot, shoot, shoot
From a blaster filled
With the hope of the rebellion

When the dark side is drowning you
And makes you feel alone and so old
Find me, and grab a hold
This blaster, it overflows

So tonight, you're flying a big white falcon
Through the trench of Tarkin's exploding death star
And you shoot, shoot, shoot
From a blaster filled
With the hope of the rebellion

Lords of Sith and Jedi Knights
Hand over the reins
Leave our path, that all nights
We find the will to break these chains
And fly!

So tonight, we're flying our big white falcons
Through the trench of Tarkin's exploding death star
And we shoot, shoot, shoot
From a blaster filled
With the hope of the rebellion
And the blood and tears of our enemies

After 7 years of snubbing the band Nightwish for firing their lead singer, I decided to give their album Dark Passion Play a chance. Turns out it's pretty good and Anette Olzon's voice doesn't grate on me as much as it used to. However, I think the album would have been ten times better with Tarja singing lead vocals.

Just in case anyone hasn't heard of Nightwish, they are a Finnish symphonic/heavy metal band. Their signature sound used to be a mix of opera and heavy metal and it was extremely effective and really set them apart from other modern metal bands. I highly recommend their earlier albums: Oceanborn, Wishmaster, Century Child and Once.

If I was to pick one song that really encapsulates their sound at its best, it would be this one:

Recently bought a few KISS albums from their 70s catalog (the Hall of Fame induction controversy got me reading up on them and I realized that while I liked them as a kid and saw them play live twice - both were partial shows at Jimmy Kimmel Live and a hockey game at Dodger Stadium, respectively - I only had one their albums: Destroyer) and have been listening to "2000 Man," a song on Dynasty. Ace sings this Rolling Stones cover better than Mick did. So I've decided that this Halloween, I'll be costuming myself as Ace from the cover of Dressed to Kill, sans wig since I shave my head. I think I'll also pick up the recent Dressed to Kill figures for the occasion. I always wanted the old Mego figures, but never got them and probably won't ever.

"2000 Man" is a great song. The version from Unplugged is excellent, too. I'm not going to get caught up in taking sides in their feuds, but Ace is a great musician who probably would be taken a lot more seriously if he'd never been in KISS. (Not saying they're not awesome, but you don't think of them as virtuosos.) Then again, mostly no one would ever have heard of him....

I saw Ace play a few years ago at a casino in Green Bay and while I didn't know that many of his songs I thought it was good and enjoyed the songs I didn't know as much as the ones I did. Plus I had a free ticket from 2-1B so that helped as well.

Since we're on a Kiss thing here I fired up Paul Daniel "Ace" Freely's cover of the Sweet hit song Fox On The Run.

Picked up the Killer's "best of" CD (finally...) today, and my favorite song of theirs, "Human," is currently playing. Need to play it in class sometime as a good example of personification, metonymy, or symbolism.

I Love Rock n Roll - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. I picked up a trio of MP3s, the others being Bad Reputation and Do You Wanna Touch Me. Thought about picking up the newest album as well, has a really good sound, not as uneven as most of their albums, but trying to be frugal.

Joan Jett is Chux Jr's absolute favorite. :) I don't let her listen to the entire catalog, though. ;)

I got the latest releases from Coldplay and the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. In both cases, I can say, "They're back, baby!" It's like both groups went back to the awesomeness if their first few albums and ignored the sketchier stuff they've done since.

Cleaning up in my classroom today, I brought a few CDs to pass the time: Police's Synchronicity, soundtrack to the new Great Gatsby; and greatest hits of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Pat Benatar (which includes the "Heartbreaker" song), & New Order; didn't stay long enough to play Metallica's S&M.

Metallica has played every original studio song from every album except for one, last night that last song was finally played live. Frayed Ends Of Sanity from ....And Justice For All was played in its entirety for the first time ever live in Norway. Other then the fact it hadn't been played....ehhh its nothing special as far as what I think. And while I of course wasn't there thanks to Al Gore's invention of the interwebs I was able to watch it.

On Wisconsin ~ The University of Wisconsin Marching Band (cheesy? Maybe. Lame? Not if you've seen them perform). That was my high school's fight song, but since I never knew the words, I sang the Wisconsin cheese commercial lyrics instead: "...it's the cheese for you... the cheese more people choose."

I believe there are lyrics but they weren't original to the song, the only words I know are "On Wisconsin...On Wisconsin....."

I found a Spin Doctors hits compilation about a week ago, on clearance (new) at FYE for fifty cents. I picked it up, since it was pretty poorly chosen tracks for an album purporting to be hits, since half of it was b-sides. The last track was "You've Got to Believe in Something," the title track from their third studio album, which I bought sixteen years ago, listened to once, hated, and would've donated or sold ages ago if my weird neuroses didn't keep telling me not to. The track wasn't half bad, so I dusted off the old CD, and it's pretty good, too. These guys will never win any real awards or show up on "Best Ever" lists, but I really think they would have more of a legacy if the lead singer didn't seem superdouchey (he probably isn't, but he comes across as it) and have an irritating voice. I'd consider picking up any of their later albums if I found them at Goodwill.

'90s station must be on a "calm" setting: Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" then into Sarah McLachlan's "Adia."

And I definitely plan to use that other song for The Crucible.
