View Full Version : Opinions requested on Imperial Worker custom

I am now really into doing imperials and would like to make one of the (for lack of an official title) Imperial Worker. In ROTJ, Palpatine comes off the shuttle and tells Vader to rise. Freeze it and look at the imperials behind Vader on the left. It looks to me like I could get away with an Imperial Officer body, sand down the gloves, paint hands, paint belt black, head swap a rebel fleet trooper and paint the helmet black. What do you think? Also, if anyone has any pictures or has already done one, I'd very much appreciate it.

Thank You

As far as I can tell the imperials in the hangar are:
Death Star gunners
Death Star Troopers
TIE pilots
Troopers in the grey jumpsuit with black cap.
AT-ST drivers
Stormtroopers
Scout troopers
Officers in black, green/grey and grey uniforms
Probe droid
R2 units
R5 units
Imperial dignitary (4 different costumes)

I checked still images from many different places and angles tonight and I can't find anything we don't have a figure of apart from a black R5 unit and a decent grey/green/black uniformed officer, nothing like what you mentioned though. Sorry I can't help you. not sure what you're referring to exactly.

well, as I mentioned, while watching the movie, freeze and start frame-by-framing the tape after Palpatine tells Vader to rise. Directly behind Vader are imperials in black jumpsuits, no gloves, all black belts (no buckels) and if you look at some of the guys that are kind of at an angle, they apear to me to be wearing Rebel Trooper helmets that are painted black (I can see the long extension at the back).

I know, pretty obscure, but would be nice to add from my point of view.

Okay, here's an overview with all the different tropers named.

The only trooper with a helmet that sticks out back like the RFT is the death star gunner, which we have a figure of already and is coming out again in a deluxe package with a death star station. Sometime late spring or summer. I'll follow this up with the only still shot I have of the guys behind vader and as far as I can tell there are only scanning crew troopers, death star gunners and TIE pilots. Next to those is the officers and behind those are the droids and then you have a load of stormtroopers and behind them is the death star troopers.

Something that occured to me, in the editing of the movies they quite often mirror a shot or flip the negative so it looks nicer. In that case what you might be getting is one shot with the uniforms of the DS gunners and in another shot a bit of the helmets of the AT-ST drivers from the other side, mingling the shots into one edit is quite common when they film from both sides to get reaction shots or whatever. Anyway, here's a shot of the TIE pilots and DS gunners on the one side. I think it's the DS gunners you're seeing.

nonononononononononononono NO!!!!!

Perfect....Thank you very much for pointing this out!!! (I'm not being sarcastic, I really mean it!)

GET THE MOVIE.......watch to the point that I mention above. I have seen the first still and clearly know what you are talking about....BUT...in the actual movie, there are guys standing NEXT to those Techies with the hats that are NOT in that still!!! The second shot is the gunners to the techies LEFT....the new guys that magically apear are to their RIGHT. As I said, I, as well, do NOT see them in the still OR the long shot in the movie BUT....they magically appear behind Vader in the close-up.

I think these guys have been missed over, probably why I can find NOTHING in the way of reference material OR people that have already done customs of them.....hence my request for opinion.

Any further thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated!

Techies with hats = Scanning Crew Members (sorry, just to clarify)

The shot also clearly shows Scanning Crewers with gloves ON...making the AT ST Driver head swap that much easier.

*coff* okay, so now we've established that it's not the gunners or the DS troopers or any of the other regular imperials I will finally have to dig out the old VCR copy and have a gander. This will be painful for me as I don't have freezeframe on my player. I'll take my copy to my *gulp* mothers and have a look.

"I may be gone some time, don't wait up dear..........." :D :crazed:

I believe this is the frame in question...

This is the wide angle over the nose of the shuttle. As you can see, the previous angle over Vader is the only one in which the black clad Death Star Trooper types are visible. Their 15 minutes of fame really only last about 3 seconds.

The Star Wars: Technical Commentaries Site only has some vague info about these guys. But anything helps. Oddly enough, they list them as having gloves, yet the ones in the picture don't. Heh. :)

Enlisted (unclassified)
Blue-black overalls, single-breasted top.
Black open helmet, cockroach brim absent or not clearly visible.
Black belt with silver buckle and holster, no utility boxes.
Long-sleeved black gloves.
No rank badge or code cylinders.
These men probably aren't regular naval sailors, guards or technicians, because those uniforms are already identified. They must specialists of some kind, or have mildly dangerous working conditions, otherwise they wouldn't have helmets. They don't work in vacuum, otherwise the helmet would be sealed. Since the next two types of servicemen on this side of the bay are naval (black-capped technicians, then gunners) I tentatively guess that the mysterious men are also in the Navy.

MTFBWY and HH!!

Probably hangar crew. The scan troopers are obviously computer and electronics specialists so it's possible that the black clad guys are the ground crewmen who tend the vehicles. That helmet looks like the DS troopers without the rear brim or the front plate. In fact they remind me a lot of the rebel technicians in the simplicity of uniform. Thanks for saving me the pain stillakid. :D
I've never noticed these guys before I have to say, or if I did my brain told me they were DS troopers. It's a lovely big continuity slip though isn't it? :) And it would also be a cool figure for hasbroken to do some time with a nice bit of hangar equipment like the energiser generator thing with hoses that's sitting behind some stormtroopers or biker scouts as vader and palpy walk by.
I suppose it'd take another four years of asking to get one though.
Well there ya go INDIANA, not going mad at all :D

I'll be off then..... *wanders of whistling*

Somewhat hard to see, it's my first time, but he is a blue/black which I'm quite pleased with. Any comments would be appreciated. Now that I know how to do this (I really am a computer idiot), I'm posting some of my other stuff in the appropriate movie threads.
