but why is the T-16 so popular. It seems everyone knows what it is, its been made into toys and legos, and it's not even in the movies! well it is for a second in the SE, but still how did it get so popular?

Luke is seen hand flying a model of one in the oringal version of SW. I can't remember the exact scene so someone else can correct me but was it on Tatooine in Uncle Lar's home?
I don't get the attraction either, I never found the design to be very interesting especially when compared to the X-wings or Tie Fighters.

I wouldn't really say the T-16 was that popular really. It is well known, but compared to the X-Wing, Millennium Falcon and Tantive IV it's nothing. I would have liked to see the T-16 in action in the movies. As long as it wouldn't ruin the movie, maybe we will see Luke racing them in ANH:AE.

According to the Visual Dictionary we do not see Luke flying his T-16 in ANH b/c Uncle Owen had grounded him for reckless flying. The only T-16 we do see flying is in the SE of ROTJ I believe, but if GL throws a few of them racing through Beggars Canyon in one of the AE's that be ok with me too.
As for popularity I'd say the Falcon would be the most.:D

Don't forget that the T-16 can be seen in the Lars' garage as Luke walks thru to go to dinner. The part that we can see is naer the cockpit.

It's also one of the few class of ships/vehicles that was specifically named in the original movie. Heck we knew it was an Incom T-16 long before we knew that the X-wing was an Incom T-65. Just like the SoroSuub XP-38 landspeeder was mentioned in the first film long before we know that Luke’s speeder was an X-34 and the Lars family speeder was a V-35.
The T-16 was shown once as a model held by Luke. Seen once in the Lars' family garage. Cited by Luke during the military briefing before the attack on the 1st Death Star. "We used to bullseye womprats in my T-16 back home and they're not much bigger than 2 meters." And... For those privy to such things... the T-16 was a huge part of the NPR broadcast of Star Wars. An entire 10 minute segment of the story was spent with Luke racing his T-16 with his friends on Tatooine and that's when he gets into the trouble with Uncle Owen that mini-rock talks about. I'd say that it has earned it's place in Star Wars cannon.

I agree. It isn't that it is popular, it is just well known. It isn't my favorite vehicle by far but when we see luke with the model in his hands, we get curious.

I think I see what SQueek is getting at. The T-16 has had a POTF2, Lego, and Micromachine versions, while other vehicles, such as the Cloud Car and Escape Pod (among other vehicles we actually see flying in the films) have yet to be made by Hasbro.

Here's a better shot of the full size in the background. You can see the engines and the "dorsal fin", too.

R2 with the holographic Leia can also be seen in that picture! The Millennium Falcon is bt far my favorite over the T-16 anyway.

I actually always thought the T-16 was an earlier version of the Lambda Shuttle, just as I had heard the Z-95 was an earlier version of the X-wing..

Yep, right before Luke wines "Oh, Biggs is right, I'm never gonna get outta here."

And sk99 makes three.
It's nice that after 26 years we can still discover something so significant in these movies. It really speaks well of the Original Trilogy.
(So give it to us on DVD George, do you hear me...George?)

What is the Z-95?

The Incom Z-95 Headhunter. About the only well known person in the Star Wars universe that flew one was Mara Jade. Here is a part of the entry on the Headhunter from the Star Wars Essential Guide To Vehicles And Vessels.
Incom/Subpro Z-95 Headhunter
The Z-95 Headhunter is one of the most common fighters in the galaxy despite the fact that the disign is older than most starfighter pilots. The starfighter is maneuverable, and its durability is legendary. Headhunters often are found in planetary police forces, and many pirate and outlaw groups use these ships. The original Z-95 Mark I Headhunter was designed as an atmospheric fighter craft that could be adapted to space travel. Mark I Headhunters are twin-engined swing-wing craft. The bubble cockpit gives the pilot a clear field of vision. X-95s typically have a set of triple blasters on each wing. While Z-95 Mark I(s) aren't fast enough for space combat, their maneuverability gives them a clear advantage against starfighters that aren't streamlined for air combat. Incom/Subpro designers made modest improvements with each model year, andt the Z-95 fighters from the last production run are evenly matched against other fighters of that era. These later Headhunters are more likely to be found in operation today. The swing wings were replaced with fixed wings, although maneuverability was maintained by adding maneuvering jets. Another addition was a more heavily armored starfighter canopy much like the one used in the X-wing, while heads-up holographic tactical displays were improved. The last Z-95 Models look like primitive X-wings, and with good reason--Incom's designers borrowed many Z-95 elements when designing the original X-wing fighter..... The Rebel Alliance used a number of Z-95 Headhunters for training missions because a pilot familiar with the controls of a Headhunter can quickly adapt to an X-wing or Y-wing. Remote Alliance bases also used Z-95s for defense to supplement Y-wing fighters. Han Solo flew a Z-95 Mark I when he led the defense of the outlaw-tech base against Corporate Sector Authority fighters. [*From the Han Solo Trilogy I believe. 12inch Lando*] Solo used the Z-95s superior atmospheric capabilities to good advantage against the Authority's sluggish IRD fighters. Mara Jade uses a modified Z-95 Headhunter which has been equipped with a hyperdrive. That ship was nearly destroyed at the battle for the Katana fleet, [Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy. 12inch*] but Talon Karrde's Technicians were able to completely refurbish it. and Mara still uses it as her personal and well armed courier ship. [At least until she got the Jade's Fire from Luke. 12inch*]
It basicly looks like an X-wing with one fixed wing instead of 2 variable wings.

I believe the Z-95 made its first appearance in the Tie Fighter game by LucasArts. That spaceship was to be the Tie Fighter counterpart as you played on the side of the Empire. If I remember correctly, I remember reading articles about the game before it came out and the designers said they lacked an "easy kill" ship that would be fair game for someone flying the Tie Fighter. To fill that need they came up with the Z-95: No shields and poor weapons made it a realitively easy kill for the Tie Fighter.
