Despite the fact that the LOTR trilogy missed out once again for Best Picture (to Chicago??! Arghh.) I did quite enjoy the show. I was especially glad to see Michael Moore win for Best Documentary. His acceptance speech was one of the all time greats...I agree 100%!

The bigger travesty is that Chicago beat the Pianist....

I was very happy to see Adrian Brody win though...

No award for Lilo and Stitch?!?!?

And Eminem beating U2? These guys are crack-fiends!!

Though Michael Moore was, as always, fun to watch. :D

Yeah, glad Moore won. Interesting speech as well.

I was very upset though that Roman Polanski (sp?) won for Best Director. The man had sex with a 13 year old, and then fled the country, he deserves a jailcell not an oscar.

What does his ethical past have to do with him winning an oscar?

He's being awarded for his incredible film work, plain and simple.

Come on, Jerry Lee Lewis Impregnated and married his 14 year old cousin...and he's in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.

Bill Wyman of the stones also married a 14 year old.......as far as I know...he's still allowed into the states....

From what I could tell from the IMDb highlights of it, it was pretty much the same as the last few years' Oscar ceremonies - crappy.

It was nice to hear mentally challenged Moore being booed. :p

I'm glad the "THE CHUBBCHUBBS!" won best Animated short. :)

Shut 'er down, mods. SirSteve has requested no political threads for now. Certainly that rule pertains to threads/posts where political views and statements are veiled under the pretext of legitimate subject matter.

Oh boy, I'm afraid to even mention Polanski but I will say this:

The issue to me isn't that he was convicted of statutory rape, rather the crime of DRUGGING a 13 year old and then commiting rape.

They keep referencing "his past conviction for statutory rape" --- and if it was only the case of him sleeping with a 16 or 17 year old girl, well then yeah it's still sick but not AS horrible as DRUGGING a young girl and then doing his evil deed.

Jeez, at least the director of "Powder" and "Jeepers Creepers" actually did jail time.

I think that despite the fact that Polanski may well have made a great film (I don't actually know, I didn't see it) a line has to be drawn somewhere when it comes to honoring people. I can't see giving an AWARD to someone who can do something well, but can't otherwise function properly in society as a whole. Just because you call yourself an "artist", you don't have free reign to act how you choose, and considering what this guy is accused of, I can't say he deserves an award. Someone like this does not deserve to be honored and certainly shouldn't be someone we point to and say to our children "Now grow up and be like him".

It's the old Pete Rose debate again. (No, he SHOULD NOT be in the HOF. Period. IMHO, of course.)

Well, T.O.R, the age of consent in many states at the time was 14 years old. It still is in Alabama. Georgia's age of consent was 14 up until about 8 years ago or so, so that was the magic age I guess. That's why the Jerry Lee Lewis thing was seen as being quite odd and just plain wrong to some, but it wasn't against the law. Those guys didn't have to flee the country to avoid arrest. Roman Pulanski was also facing a blacklisting in Hollywood over the incident.

So what if it's not "against the law"? Who's law? Were the things that these men did morally ok? Yes, if you believe humans have not evolved in the last 5000 years. Why do you think Jerry Lee Lewis' career was effectively over the moment that news hit?

Yeah, and Hitler did a great job of re-building/unifying Germany after WWI. Yet somehow we manage not to praise him with an award. :Pirate:

As was mentioned, there is a big difference between marrying a 14 year old and drugging and rapping a 13 year old.

All I know is that if I had been that girls' father, I would have organized a major protest during the Awards, just over the Polanski nomination, let alone his winning!!!

I sit back everyday and ask myself what world are these people living in. Kidman made me want to vomit, then I hear some idiot say how brave she was for "Flying" from NY to CA for the awards?!?! Hello, she was on a private jet!!! And don't even get me started on the "electric car" thing. Yeah, like these guy's don't drive H2's and get driven around in huge gas guzzling limo's on a regular basis.

Disclaimer:All of the above comments are geared towards the "Academy Awards" and are not meant to be political comments in any way shape or form, I am commenting on rich actors/actresses and their inability to grasp reality.

Have a nice day.:)

Umm.......... Hitler was rewarded with his plans to rebuild germany by being elected to power. Had he have been captured, he would have faced trial for his war crimes. How you thought this was an apt comparison though is beyond me

Again, they aren't rewarding him as a person...they are rewarding his work as a piece of cinema. As for the incident, he's admitted it was wrong, and the woman herself has said she would like to see the legal issue worked out, and she would also like to see him allowed into the country again. Stautory rape is statutory rape. I see little differance in the crime. One was manipulated with drugs, one with an adult influence....

For that matter....should Pete Townshend be ousted from the RR hall of fame for his internet child porn infraction?

Ummm...Guess I'll try to steer the forum back on topic.

Nope, didn't watch them. Why? Because I really could care less about which actor/actress millionaire get a nice shiny trophy to show off on their mantle.

Boy I sound bitter, don’t I? I just see TV awards shows as a way for rich and famous people to show off. I feel that many legitimate people who should get the awards never do. It almost feels like people throwing a party for themselves to congratulate themselves for what a wonder job they’ve been doing. Like patting themselves on the back and such.

Yeah, the guy makes Karl Marx look conservative, but you gotta at least give him props for Canadian Bacon, right? (He did do that film, didn't he? If not, I'm looking like an idiot! :p)

I'm glad the "THE CHUBBCHUBBS!" won best Animated short. :)

I'd only seen "Mike's New Car" of the nominees. Where might I find "The Chubbchubbs" or any of the other nominees?

"THE CHUBBCHUBBS!" can be seen as an extra on the MIIB DVD. I'm not sure where one could find it on the net......maybe Kazaa?

Let us not forget the Candy factor of "Canadian Bacon". I still find myself wishing that John was still with us, making us laugh :(

YES!!!

It's a start, and the same goes for Pete Rose (Baseball Hall of Fame).

Just my opinion.
