anybody interested in a little hockey pool for fun? pick a team and the number of games they win their series in for each match up in each round. two points per pick, one for team and one for games. most points come june is the winner.

s_q's picks for round one:
east
Ottawa in 4 (Isles continue to slump)
New Jersey in 6 (NJ has let too much playoff experience go)
Tampa in 6 (niether of these two teams would see the second round if it wasn't for the fact that they're facing each other)
Toronto in 6 (physical low scoring series)
west
Dallas in 5 (shame this one won't go longer, Edmonton is so entertaining in the playoffs. gotta feel for A Carter being dealt to the Rangers)
Detroit in 5 (Anahiem just lacks the the playoff experience)
Colorado in 7 (Avs dodge a first round bullet, barely)
Vancouver in 6 (Van has played so well since last years all-star break and a few loses here will be the wake up call they need to get back on track)

I'll hop into this, although my attention this Thurs will be the college hockey frozen four and national championship game on sat. NHL can take a small back seat until I see my Gophers repeat as National Champs...breaking the 30 year drout for repeat championships. *Keeping fingers crossed*
DAL vs EDM = DAL in 6 (Hate the stars since they left MN, but have to go with them)
DET vs ANA = DET in 5 (No fight in the ducks, and no big guns)
COL vs MIN = COL in 7 (Tough call since I'm a MN boy)
VAN vs STL = VAN 5 (St. Louis is jinxed for playoffs)
OTT vs NYI = OTT in 5 (Isles made a mistake letting osgood go)
NJ vs BOS = NJ in 5 (Thorton will get shut down by Madden)
TB vs WAS = WAS in 7 (TB is cooling off to quick)
PHI vs TOR = PHI in 7 (TOR has too many old farts, can't keep up but this will be the best series)
Now, for the college hockey playoffs.
MN vs. Mich - MN 5-3 (if MN gets out to their quick starts again, they are unstopable.)
UNH vs. Cornell - Cornell 2-1 (Cornell's Blue Line is too big for UNH...even though Cornell should have lost to BC.)
Championship
MN vs. Cornell - MN 4-3 (Gotta go with last years experience and speed vs. Cornell's defensive stance and inexperience)
Go Wild, but more importantly GO GOPHERS!!!!

AVS in 5 v. wild
stars in 6 over oilers
red wings sweep ducks
stl (osgood will get them through the 1st) in 6 over canucks
sens beat ny in 5
devils need all 7 to beat boston
leafs over phlyers in 5 (remember those mat sundin commercials on ESPN with the goalie driving a riding mower over a mound of leaves)
capitals beat tb (love the bucs though) in 5.
GO AV'S

Yeah, STINGER!!! They thought they hated the Leafs?!? At least we let em go more than 4 games, usually!!! Still, I was shocked to see the results as it happened, I figured the Sens would at least make em pay for the series... lots of games left, they may turn it around....
Oh, and the Leaf victory last night just proves what I've been saying- a lot of folks put some stock in the fact that the Leafs don't have home-ice adv, but to me it's seemed, in the playoffs, that the team has more troubles at home post-season... ya gotta love the empty netter,too...

I know this don't much fit with NHL picks, but I just have to announce that the Golden Gophers are defending their title this saturday night and trying to break the 30 curse of repeating as national champions. I had the radio on for the gophers and I'm sitting in front of the TV cheering for the Wild.
But I just gotta say GO GOPHERS!!!!!

hey. it's all good. we love get off topic. we don't really get any US college hockey up here so Go Gophers!
wow. there's still a few minutes on the clock at this point but the last of the opening games was over long ago. who would have picked 7 of these first games to be lost by home ice teams?
TO, Edmonton and the Caps are believable, but the Ducks taking the Wings to 3ot, the Sens getting blanked (still laughing) and the Canucks getting their @sses handed to them were indeed surprises. if everybody can keep it up, this has makings of the best post season in a long time. I thought TOR was a bit off picking all the series to go so long but he may be right on the money.

Well college hockey has a new repeat champion...and what could be the making of a dynasty, depending on how many sign pro contracts...
But the U of Minnesota Golden Gophers downed UNH for a back to back title, putting their names in the record book of the only team to defend their title in 30 years.
Now I can only hope for 3-peat.
I have a sneaky hunch the gophers will drop the puck Monday night at the Wild game. The fans will already be nuts to have Wild in the play offs, and then to have the home town, national champs, drop the puck, they are gonna blow the roof of the "X"
Man I wish I had tickets to mondays game.

Go Lanch??? I'm sure they will win the series, but the Wild will make a tough stance. I don't think there will be a blow out game from here on out. I think the games will all be settled by a one goal difference, but I do wonder if everyone would have/still jumped on the band wagon if they were still in Quebec.

tjovonovich tonite's game will be big. first playoff game in minn in over a decade. i would still be a blues fan if the nordiques hadn't come to denver. gotta cheer on the hometown team even if they are transplanted. no way can i ever cheer for jersey since they blew town. i knew the av's wouldn't be able to simply walk over the wild. but i am very impressed with how they've played, especially for a team with so little playoff experience.

so,... all but one of 8 series are now 3 games in (really, does anyone give a crap about tbay/caps aside from the injustice that one of them will make it to the second round?) here's my thoughts on the play offs so far.
stars/oilers - nice to see the oilers giving the stars headaches and making a series out of this. an ice surface as good as edmonton's deserves to see as much use as possible.
avs/wild - has all the makings of going the 7 games I predicted. bitter sweet this one is, like sakic/don't roy. wouldn't mind seeing an upset if nothing more than for tjovonovich's sake
canucks/blues - van's 2,3 & 4 lines better do something quick because even with out big al the blues have totally shut down the canucks big guns.
wings/ducks - who saw this coming? the wings are now faced with a challenge that only 2 other teams have ever accomplished, coming back from 3-0. the hockey player in me respects cujo's decision to join what he thought was his best chance at a cup but he has completely dropped the ball and the blue&white diehard in me can't stop laughing.
sens/ilses - ny is giving ottawa a much harder time of it then I expected, which is fine by me. game 4 is do-or-die for ny
tbay/caps - this is me not giving a crap (oh-oh here comes a fart) tb has lost 11 straight is wash. so they better do something quick or this one is over in 4
devils/bruins - apparently boston just realized they made the playoffs, a 5-1 victory tonight but too little, too late. it won't go 6
leafs/flyers - the leafs are right where they should be at this point - stealing one on the road and winning last night, but what a way to get there. not much else in this series has gone as expected. the flyers have really stepped up, the leafs haven't shown anywhere near what they're capable of and lots of scoring (flyers tied with nj for least goals against in the regular season) it's been a physical series but the leafs can get nastier still so philly beware! go leafs go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do have to respect the Lanch, but at the same time, they are turning into the braves and yankees of hockey. There are just some teams you get tired of seeing.
I can only hope the wild turn things around tomorrow. Jacque is a great coach and has done more with average tallent than any other coach but I do have to wonder about his decision to keep Rolli in and leave Manny on the bench.
The other thing I have to question is, why keep doing to dump and chase bit. MN is built on speed, forechecking, and defensive stance, but offense is lacking and our current system is not working anymore. We fire the puck into the corners, send in the forwards in to muck in the corners, and hope they can dig it out and work it back to the points. In game two and game three the lanch adjusted for this and lead to odd man rushes and turnovers.
The Wild need to work it and skate it past the blue line instead of dumping it into the corners. They aren't generating enough offense with this anymore.
I don't know what it is, but that seems to be the thing these days. Even watching our state high school hockey tourney this march, the favorite, just did the dump and chase and it got them no place. The underdogs, skated it into the zone and just dominated the flow and controlled the tempo. I still can't figure out why there's this push for forechecking and dump and chase. We did that in grade school and peewee's. You win with controll.
The other thing the wild need to do is stand up the forwards when the lanch skate it into the zone. MN is defensive minded but we give Joe and the flopper Peter too much room to work and set up. We need to stand them up at the blue line and break up their flow.
Besides that, the other games have been fun to watch.
I'm so pulling for the Oilers and hope the stars take a nose dive. Remember the Alamo...no its Remember the True North Stars...
I'd also like to see the wings get clipped by the ducks too. I don't blame Cujo in this case, the wings are just cold. I think age has finally caught up to the Wings.
Philly and the Leafs...wow, is about all I can say. Gotta love Domi.
This will go 7 and with the close games I do wonder if they'll have the legs and energy to keep up the pace.
Washington and Tampa...ZZZZZZ...ZZZZZ...
Isles and Senators. I have to pull for the Senators. There's two MN boys on the Isles I detest, so go Senators.
I'm greatly disapointed in Boston. They finally show a spark but it might be too late. I don't think they can pull off an upset.
After watching a few games, I honestly can't pick a "sure" thing for an easy run to the cup. Heck I can't even pick a conference championship match up. It could be anyone after the ups and down. No one has really impressed me so far, and no one is playing at a constant level.
But that's what makes this time of year great.

after hockey tonight we went to the bar to watch the end of the wings/ducks game. (just oj for me thanks) anyway, on my way home I passed this car parked on the side of the road just before my street, it had a huge wings logo sticker that took up almost the entire rear window and personalized plates that said "DET FANS" I'd been discussing some skateboard deck designs for a friend's shop earlier in the day and just happened to still have a pad of post-it notes in my pocket, so I wrote about 50 "ha"s on a page and stuck it to the rear plate. man was that fun.

Still anyone's Cup...the one team that's into the 2nd round so far is among the least likely, in my mind, but they get a week's rest... could be great or terrible, since the momentum will be all but gone by then... lot of time for confidence problems... Yea round 2 is gonna be tricky
East:
Senators vs. Flyers - Senators in 6. I don't think Philly has enough gas left in the tank from their duel with the Leafs.
Devils vs. the Sparks - Devils in 5. Madden and co were too good at shutting down Joe Thorton so they shouldn't have a problem with the Sparks. I think there will be one hick-up by the devils.
West:
Stars vs. Ducks - Stars in 6. As much as I HATE the Stars, I cheer for anyone playing the Stars, for personal vengful reasons I'll have to hope Stars pull through, but I don't be upset if the Duck keep on their roll.
Canucks vs. Wild - Wild in 7 again. I have to root for the underdogs and home town team. Regular season they split 2-2-1. Its gonna be a huge dog fight. There's bad blood between these two. Manny is on fire, and Rolli could get hot too. Canucks only have one power line really and MN shut down two of the best players currently out there, and won out in the battle of the brick wall, force field goalies. I think they'll ride their emotional wave and keep playing the spoiler roll.
Plus I hope they meet the stars in the WC. I wanna hear the Norm green sucks chant and the NORTH stars chant again. The fans and cities go into a frenzy when the stars are in town and the players feed off that. I would like to see the stars and wild go at it.

I'm hoping to get a few of the others from the thread in the misc. >> general forum to come over and make some picks for the rest of the rounds (the more the merrier) so I'm thinking about changing the points structure. going with what Jerjerrod started I was thinking 2 points for each part for round one (up from 1 each), then 3 points for each team and 3 for games in round two, 4 for the 3rd and 5 for the finals. hopefully that would give anyone who missed out on round one a chance to make up some points and keep things interesting.

04-24-2003, 02:02 AM
ok, so here's what I did. I totalled everyone's points based on 2 points for getting the team right and 2 more for the number of games regardless of if the team you picked won the series. after looking at all the point totals I decided to go back to one point for each to keep totals low in hopes of drawing in a few more. after all that, here's how we all did after round one:
tjovonovich: 10 points
jerjerrod: 8 points
the overlord returns: 8 points
seth_quinn: 7 points
darth jax: 6 points
fun facts: t-jo got the double on 4 of 8
the o-r got points on 7 of 8
if you haven't already, make your choices for the next round kids, new points structure in place; 3 points for the team and 3 for the # of games regardless.

Toronto is a RICH team, and ottawa has been having troubles lately... the Leafs were hoping to help them dig themselves out of financial trouble, and it wouldn't be believeable if they played the Sens and lost;), this was the only way to accomplish the task.... NOTHING ELSE could explain what happened on tuesday, the Leafs just skated around on the ice til the final horn, even Philly felt bad about it.......
Good luck to the Sens, since it's not us or them, I will pick them, they might just get somewhere, as philly should be at least partially deflated by now....

Is it too late with my Round 1 picks? If not, my winners will be Anaheim, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, New Jersey, Vancouver, Philiadelphia, Ottawa, and Dallas.
Okay, okay maybe I am a little late. I would have picked all winners except Anaheim (and who saw that coming?) Minnesota and Tampa.
My Round 2 selection goes like this
NJ in 5
Dal in 7
Ott in 6
Van in 6

I'm torn here guys!!!! What do I do!!!!!!!!!!
Do I cheer for Anahiem becuase they might actually eliminate Dallas, and make the finals a bit more interesting (i.e. all the big teams are out) ???
Or do I hope that Dallas wins, because the thought of a team named after a Disney Movie having possession of the cup is just.....wrong!

Cheer for Dallas, man, that's the Leafs fan way to do it, cheer for the moral victor ;)!!!!!!!!!!
Winning isn't everything;)!!! (it is when you do, but it means little when you don't)
Only 5 months til next puck drop!!!!!

well done boys....

Wow, I'm still in shock that my Wild won. The guys on the radio are going nuts this morning and I guess after the 3rd MN goal last night, people started lining up the "x" to get tickets for the game on sat.
Totally crazy.
Well here we go...
East:
Senators vs. Devils - Devils in 6. Marty is too good and Sens are too streaky. I'd like to see a Canadian team fighting for the cup, but I don't think its gonna be this year.
West:
Ducks vs. Wild - I'm torn. Ducks real thing or back stopped like the Panthers where when the Beezer carried them to the cup finals. Wild, have shown they can hang, dual steallar goalies, and the drive to keep fighting...and they are finally finding the back of the net more than once or twice a game.
I have to go with hometown loyalities on this one and my gut feeling. Jacque can work magic.
Wild in 7 again.
I can't wait to see the running point total.
Now is when play off hockey gets good...

well.....
I agree with you on Minn. in 7. That'll be a tough series to call...
However, I disagree with you on the Sens - Devils game. I call Sens in 6.

Well...time for the semifinal picks......
East: Senators in 7. Brodeur will keep NJ in this one....but Ottawa will prevail.
West: Anaheim in 6. Giguere et al want that cup......nuff' said.

wow, what a comeback. I tuned in just before the Canucks scored their two goals and at that point figured it was in the bag. lesson to learned: do not count the Wild out at any point.
ok, so here are the point totals from round 2:
Darth Jax - 15
tjovonovich - 21
seth_quinn - 18
pegger - 6
The Overlord Returns - 15
Lowly Bantha Cleaner - 12
fun facts: all of us picked the Sens & Devils
t-jo got 21 of a possibe 24
and so, after 2 rounds, the overall points look like this:
tjovonovich - 31
seth_quinn - 25
The Overlord Returns - 23
Darth Jax - 21
Lowly Bantha Cleaner - 12
Jerjerrod - 8
pegger - 6
if you haven't already, get your picks in for round 3 and keep watching for bonus point opportunities during this round.

since i've not been doing so well trying to analyze things will simply pick by who i'd like to win.
hate NJ so picking the sens. marty's awful tough to beat so we'll go in 6.
ducks/wild could easily be a toss-up. therefore pick another game 7 win for the wild.

I'll go with the Devils in 7. The Senators have toughened up over the past season and that has shown in their post season play. However age and experience should triumph in this series as they ususally do in the playoffs.
In the West I will take the Ducks in 6. A hot goaltender can ride you very far in the playoffs and Giguere has proved that. No knock on Rollie the Goalie, but I'll go with Anaheim.
Whoever comes out of the East will be salavating.

sq's round 3 picks -
the wild and sens both took big time advantage of their opponents lack of discipline via powerplay goals in the last round. the ducks n' devils don't take many penalties and are backed by superior goaltending so...
Devils in 6
&
Ducks in 6

Well here we go...the cup final.
Ducks vs. Devils.
Looking at past runs for flash in the pan teams with stellar goaltending, and average scoring lines, panthers, hurricanes, capitols, etc, none of them have been able to hold a candle to their opposing team. I have a hunch the cinderella/disney story is coming to a crashing halt.
And looking at stat that say the team that swept their opponent in the conference final has never won the cup. And I do have to side with the stats and history for this one. If not it way to hard to call...too many what if's.
I have to cast my lot to the boys out east for a stanley cup victory, even though I can't stand them. I wouldn't be heartbroken if the Ducks did pull an amazing upset off.
Devils in 6. I honestly want to say 5, but the ducks seem to have luck on their side sometimes.

the thing about teams with hot goalies carrying them to the finals and not a lot of team to back it up is that they're all eastern teams playing a western powerhouse. sabers lose to stars, panthers to av's, hurricanes to wings. now the roles are reversed the hot goalie thats loaded his team on his back hails from the west and the more dominant team comes from the east. still hate to think the cup will head back east so gotta go with the ducks in 6.

Ducks in 6. I usually never pick the underdog teams to win and I selfishly don't root for certain teams that I feel have to put in their time before winning the Cup (i.e. Carolina) but I will have to make an exception and pick Anaheim.

Wow!
I SUCK this year...........
Well...2 teams I can't stand. But, I have to cheer for the Ducks (I guess).
Ducks in 6.
Lowly Bantha Feeder - I disagree with you on Carolina. I think they should never win because they left Hartford. (Just like the Coyotes should never win for leaving Winnipeg).

well another hockey season has drawn to a close, a sad close IMO. and now once again for the next year i have to live with the knowledge that the devils are the champs. was great to see jiggy when the conn smythe, even if the stupid jersey fans couldn't recognize it. sad when the devil players support the decision and cheer for him, yet the idiots in the stands simply boo.

Yup its all said and done.
I wonder what the points total is from our little pool.
There will be some teams to watch next year and all eyes will be on Jiggy to see if he's for real or a flash in the pan.
Its been fun and I can't wait till the puck drops in Oct.

Not a big hockey fan but i wanted the Ducks to win. Why, i dont know but maybe it has something to do with that movie disney made back in the day and i think of the fat kid who played goalie. Thats what i see every time i look at the ducks uniform. Oh well, New Jersey wont get it in basketball.

Well it was a great playoff run and I for one was satisfied with the finals. I thought "Jiggy" deserved the Con Smythe. I was upset that the Jersey fans actually booed him. I do wonder if the Ducks won the cup if Marty would of got the MVP.

it was a bitter-sweet final for sure imo, it would have been great to see a lot of different guys from both sides get a chance to hoist the cup. poor steve thomas most of all. not to take anything away from marty (hey he did win us the gold) but I think js deserved the mvp no matter who won. two giant kills and then three so's in round 3, to a 7th game in round 4. he earned it. and if he can keep it up, probably he over all the others will get to kiss the cup someday. there will always cinderella teams but it'll a long while before that kind of feat will be duplicated by another 7th ranked team. as for the pool, it sort of fell apart somewhere around round three as people lost interest as their teams got eliminated and it got nice outside. I think you were in the lead t-jo last time I tallied up points. oh well, it's all over, but take comfort in the fact that Only 90 Days Until Training Camp! can't wait.
