I really prefer the word "Nerd" to geek.
I mean ... I've done a lot of other things besides collect and repair vintage video game systems, play D&D (once at a convention in 1982) and listen to a lot of Devo. So what if I'm proud that I code by hand ... as well as remember the glory days of the Commodore 64. So what if I own and sometimes play a Theremin built by Bob Moog (so what if you know who I'm talking about.) So what if I own a Mac but prefer my PC(s) because they're easier and cheaper to tinker with. So what if I once wrote a message in the dirt on Leonard Nimoy's Mercedes windshield because I was too shy to say hello to him. So what if my 5 year old knows and quotes the "Dead Parrot" sketch from Monty Python ... he doesn't know the "Lumberjack" song yet. (That's his problem anyway.) So what if Tom Baker (http://www.tom-baker.net/) is my favorite Doctor (so what if I just gave you a link to his Web site.)
I mean ... I've done a lot of other things ...

Why are you guys getting defensive about being Geeks?
I too prefer the term Nerd, because I think it's more applicable (I thought Geek was unaware of his status, but a Nerd was not?)
In any case, while somebody could tell me the difference between a Geek and Nerd, I'm totally proud to be a Total Geek amongst you!
The rest of you should get a life!
All I see in Geekdom is people that do stuff that they enjoy.
So the way I see it, the bigger the Geek you become, the happier you'll get!

I scored a 14.00394%. I was pretty sure I would score much higher than this.
Funny thing - while I do know that the answer is 42, I don't really remember what the question was! :D
I also take issue with one of the points made on the test - if you were to take either ASIMO or a real lightsaber into the trendiest club in the world filled with the least geeky people in the world - everyone would want one.:frus:

Isn't the true definition of a geek, that of a person who bites off the head of chickens at a performance, a la a circus? A nerd would be just a synonym for a dork, dweeb, an "uncool" person. They may sport pocket protectors, or speak Klingon, or something that is perceived as different from the mainstream or better yet weird.
Tycho
06-19-2003, 09:48 PM
If I had extra time on my hands (what a wish!) and could do a heck of a lot of other things first, I'd still learn to speak Klingon!
What's funny is that on the news I heard about a riot in a mental institution because the revised budget didn't allow for the Klingon interpreter to stay on the payroll.
But, true story, and my brother was watching Smallville with me when we saw this on the news, there is a mental facility that housed specific cases of people who thought they were alien species that were surgically altered and trapped here on earth. The Klingon contingency in the ward actually organized, and had to be separated because they are a naturally violent lot, and they wanted to break out and attack NASA and try and steal the space shuttle while the ships are being repaired so that they could take off and return to the Klingon homeworld.
That is pretty scary!

I didn't check Websters, but I've always categorized Nerds as more scientifically oriented, like guys who are really into Star Trek.
Geeks aren't so into the "technicalities," meaning they don't invent and speak the fictional languages and stuff. Geeks are more into the "cooler" aspects of "geeky" stuff, like comic books and the more "mythical" fiction, like Star Wars might fall into.
Either way, hot chicks take one look at that "star wars kid" and associate ALL people who are into Trek or SW with him. That's just the way it is.

I got Total geek with 25.44something. And to prove it:
"O people waiting in the Shadow of Deep Thought!" he cried out. "Honoured Descendants of Vroomfondel and Majikthise, the Greatest and Most Truly Interesting Pundits the Universe has ever known ... The Time of Waiting is over!"
Wild cheers broke out amongst the crowd. Flags, streamers and wolf whistles sailed through the air. The narrower streets looked rather like centipedes rolled over on their backs and frantically waving their legs in the air.
"Seven and a half million years our race has waited for this Great and Hopefully Enlightening Day!" cried the cheerleader. "The Day of the Answer!"
Hurrahs burst from the ecstatic crowd.
"Never again," cried the man, "never again will we wake up in the morning and think Who am I? What is my purpose in life? Does it really, cosmically speaking, matter if I don't get up and go to work? For today we will finally learn once and for all the plain and simple answer to all these nagging little problems of Life, the Universe and Everything!"
Two severely dressed men sat respectfully before the terminal and waited.
"The time is nearly upon us," said one.
"Seventy-five thousand generations ago, our ancestors set this program in motion," the second man said, "and in all that time we will be the first to hear the computer speak."
"An awesome prospect, Phouchg," agreed the first man.
"We are the ones who will hear," said Phouchg, "the answer to the great question of Life...!"
"The Universe...!" said Loonquawl.
"And Everything...!"
"Shhh," said Loonquawl with a slight gesture, "I think Deep Thought is preparing to speak!"
There was a moment's expectant pause whilst panels slowly came to life on the front of the console. Lights flashed on and off experimentally and settled down into a businesslike pattern. A soft low hum came from the communication channel.
"Good morning," said Deep Thought at last.
"Er ... Good morning, O Deep Thought," said Loonquawl nervously, "do you have ... er, that is..."
"An answer for you?" interrupted Deep Thought majestically. "Yes. I have."
The two men shivered with expectancy. Their waiting had not been in vain.
"There really is one?" breathed Phouchg.
"There really is one," confirmed Deep Thought.
"To Everything? To the great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything?"
"Yes."
Both of the men had been trained for this moment, their lives had been a preparation for it, they had been selected at birth as those who would witness the answer, but even so they found themselves gasping and squirming like excited children.
"And you're ready to give it to us?" urged Loonquawl.
"I am."
"Now?"
"Now," said Deep Thought.
They both licked their dry lips.
"Though I don't think," added Deep Thought, "that you're going to like it."
"Doesn't matter!" said Phouchg. "We must know it! Now!"
"Now?" inquired Deep Thought.
"Yes! Now..."
"Alright," said the computer and settled into silence again. The two men fidgeted. The tension was unbearable.
"You're really not going to like it," observed Deep Thought.
"Tell us!"
"Alright," said Deep Thought. "The Answer to the Great Question..."
"Yes...!"
"Of Life, the Universe and Everything..." said Deep Thought.
"Yes...!"
"Is." said Deep Thought, and paused.
"Yes...!"
"Is."
"Yes...!!!...?"
"Forty-two," said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.
It was a long time before anyone spoke. Out of the corner of his eye Phouchg could see the sea of tense expectant faces down in the square outside.
"We're going to get lynched aren't we?" he whispered.
"It was a tough assignment," said Deep Thought mildly.
"Forty-two!" yelled Loonquawl. "Is that all you've got to show for seven and a half million years' work?"
"I checked it very thoroughly," said the computer, "and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you've never actually known what the question is."
"But it was the Great Question! The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything!" howled Loonquawl.
"Yes," said Deep Thought with the air of one, who suffers fools gladly, "but what actually is it?"
A slow stupefied silence crept over the men as they stared at the computer and then at each other.
"Well, you know, it's just Everything ... Everything..." offered Phouchg weakly.
"Exactly!" said Deep Thought. "So once you do know what the question actually is, you'll know what the answer means."
