View Full Version : Jane's Addiction "Strays"

Anyone else pick up the latest offering from Jane's? I got it today (special offer: 9.99 at future shop) and am still getting familiar with it. My first impression after 2 listens in the car though is this:
All bands mellow out after a while. Some bands dial it down and their music suits me better (Metallica, Stone Temple - I know, call me a wuss) some dial it down and don't really get better or worse (Red Hot, Nirvana), and some dial it down and lose their edge completely (Soundgarden). I'm almost ready to say that Jane's is in this third group. The animosity between Perry and Dave Navarro I think drove the group around the time of Ritual de lo Habitual (their creative peak in my opinion), and the angst seems to be gone on this album. My opinion can change after numerous listens however, but that's where I'm at today. Anyone else like Jane's or PforPyros? What about Navarro with Red Hot or his solo album (which I don't have) Any comments?

I've only listened to it once. I've never been a huge Jane's Addiction fan (I'm probably the only person who has ever let Ritual de lo Habitual sit unlistened to, gathering dust), but "Just Because" is an awesome song. On my first listen, it's not bad. Not great, but not bad. Sorta typically, but you're right about losing the edginess. That's about as far as I'm normally willing to go with JA. :p
Of the CD's I got yesterday, this is second to KISS's Symphony: Alive IV. (I've not listened to the Masked and Anonymous soundtrack yet, so don't know where it places among the three.)
I rather liked the first Porno for Pyros album, oddly enough. And, though I don't have any of his solo stuff, I think Navarro's totally wails on guitar like a ninja. (One Hot Minute is, by far, my favorite RHCP CD, mainly because of his guitar slinging.)
BTW, at what point would you say Soundgarden dialed it down and became wussies?

I havent heard it yet. I used to love JA, but its been so long since anything new really. I will check Kazaa and try to DL some of it before I make a decision.

I love Jane's, but this album is not great. It screams average. Without Eric Avery, the original bassplayer who wrote most of the melodies for original Jane's, they are severely lacking. Too bad.

No, Im the wuss - Soundgarden would kick my ***. I think they mellowed significantly between Badmotorfinger and ******** I can't remember the name of the album that came out in my fourth year -the track "Black Hole Sun" is typical of the more stoned-out flavor of the disc though. I still liked it, but the edge was down. BMF rocks - no doubt a hard act to follow.
Snperunknown or something like that . . . I just remember the upside down "u" ;)
I'm not a fan of Jane's or Porno (or RHCP but that doesn't relate here) because I don't like the way Perry sings.
I will say that he is one funny dude to watch during an interview! :D I have an old hard rock video magazine VHS with a Perry Farrell interview . . . I don't know what the narcotic du jour was but he sure was messed up. Crying about who knows what, it was really bizarre.
I don't know if he's like that now but I sure thought he was creepy then.

Good God, he's weird. I remember reading as many print interviews as I could back when PforP released their first record - he was partying like it was 1999, no doubt.
btw Caesar - Superunknown is exactly right. Red Hot is kind of related, both them and JA spun out of late 80's LA, both have featured Navarro on lead guitar, both are progressive rock acts that pushed the envelope in neat ways, and last but certainly not least: both have numerous entries in my personal cd collection. :D
Oh I know they ARE related, I just wanted to limit my post to all things Perry. :D
Don't get me started on Flea and his penchant for playing naked.
I will say this about Perry Farrell and I'm not being sarcastic: "Pets" is a GREAT premise for a song! The idea of aliens coming down to Earth and enslaving us as pets is kinda cool. I bet Perry would fetch the highest price of all in the intergalactic pet store. :)
Hey you know what's a cool song by Soundgarden?
Birth Ritual (?) I think it might be on Badmotorfinger?
I remember seeing the movie Singles and seeing/hearing him screaming "Ritttuuuuaaalllllll"
Maybe I'm mistaken, perhaps it was Temple of the Dog?

Singles soundtrack, song credited to Soundgarden. Cool record.

I don't have the album, I've just heard the single and it sounds like good old Jane's to me. And that's a relief. 12 years is too long to wait.
It seems as though in general rock and harder edged music may be making a mainstream comeback. Fine with me, most of the stuff that has come out over the last 7-8 years has been by the old standard bearers who have, my opinion, released so much stuff it all sounds the same. I exempt Jane's, if for no other reason they've been out of the game for so long!!

The last song Jane's Addiction/Perry Ferrell made that I really liked was Hardcharger for the Private Parts soundtrack. Too bad I can't find any local radio stations who'll play that song.
