I was just curious what a "zone defense" is? I was in Wal-Mart earlier today, heard this broadcast over the intercom, followed by "all department managers head immediately to your departments". I thought it was kind of humorous because I saw a bunch of employees and management scuttle about like the store just went on Red Alert. I was even imagining the Star Trek alert siren going off in the background. Anyway, is this what happens when one of the Waltons comes by or something like when shop lifter has been spotted?

Being a former employee of Wal-Fart, but having worked overnight, I only know that the employees are supposed to face up the isles, remove merchandise that doesn't belong in that section, and basically make their department look good. Anyone else got a better idea? I mean that is what they would do at our store, but we didn't do a zone defense on overnights.

Its basically when you have to clean up the isle and try to make it look decent.I have yet to see the proceedure in my WM

Yup, basically its called before the Department Managers go home for the day, and before 2nd shift leaves for the night. What they have to do then is putt all the merchandise to the front of the shelves, to make it look neat and full; removed any trash (i.e. cardboard boxes, plastic wrap, etc), skids, empty carts, and anything else that is out of place. Its suppose to work so that when the next "shift" (as if WM really has shifts  ) arrives they can get right to work without having to clean up a big mess. And also so that the customers are not walking through/around trash and things.

IJG, they don't do that at your store??? Odd . . . I thought it was one of the most basic things that happened everywhere. I understand some things not being done in some places . . . but cleaning up not one of them . . hmmm. BTW, get out now!!! While you can!!! While your young!!! Escape with us!!! :D

What we do at night is that they say "All security cameras and all associates go to a security code 60" which means it is time to go on break." They do that instead of announcing to go on break to the whole store so theives don't get the heads up.

To deter those who actually think someone is watching. Plus it is probably taping the whole incident so if one of the employees or undercover security people see something suspicious, they can go back and get the tape.

I have heard that some of the cameras are just "fake" anyway. Not that I ever tried to test this out.

We had an employee who I had seen with a C.D. and a video tape just minutes before. I worked in the foods department, and I could see the front door. I see this guy leaving for the day, and the alarm goes off. The manager confronts him, he acts like he doesn't know why the alarm is going off. Walks through a second time, again the alarm goes off, and again a third time. I figure the manager would call 911, but nope, he lets the employee go. I ran to the front of the store and told the manager what I had seen this guy walk past my department with, and asked why he didn't frisk him at least, and he told me he wasn't allowed to do that, because he wasn't a cop, and said he could be sued if he did frisk this guy.
