EP3: SPY REPORT: Only a Mother Could Love
Tue, Oct 07, 03 02:06:42 AM EDT

Timberwolf comes back again tonight with some more spoilers on makeup tests of Palpatine in Episode III. So far the Star Wars Insider magazine has showed him looking a lot like his Episode II days but with new costumes for the sequel. But this insider tells us more tonight on what to expect in SW3:
I don't know if he's been using the Dark Side of the Force to cover it up or what - but the real Palpatine is getting some serious face time in Episode III. OK, I don't really know how much screen time Palpidious (funny name saw in the forums, sorry) is getting - but I do know they prepped him for a closeup.
There was an image from Episode III recently that showed the actor in costume getting ready to shoot a scene. It is intentionally misleading because that isn't what you'll really see him as in the film. Well, kind of - the side he shows the Jedi is still relatively tame, when we finally see the reveal it'll be a throwback to the ole' Return of the Jedi days.

In a makeup test, they had Ian McDiarmid looking just like the Emperor we know from the Classics, complete with yellow eyes and terrible crevaces of deep facial features. In one shot he's kind of gritting his teeth looking right at the camera. There are dark rings of red and brown under and around his eyes, and his lips are pursed and cracked. His face doesn't just look weathered, it looks plain evil. His black cloak is over his head in this first test shot.

In a second shot, his cloak is removed and you can see the top of his head. It is more of a casual shot with Ian almost smiling an evil grin to the camera. You can SO see him under the laytex, its some great work there. From this side shot you can see the intricate aging work in his neck and forehead, the man looks evil - a face only a mother could love. And even then, it might be difficult.

Why does Sidious look like this? He always did. Palpatine is his disguise/alternate persona he adopted to get himself into political power. He isn't able to maintain the disguise while using his powers and you'll see him flash to his Sidious look earlier in the film until he does the official "unveiling."

So would it be cool to see a first glimpse of this face as Palpatine feels the Dark Side flow through his body at a critical point in the film? Maybe there's been a confrontation, and Palpatine realizes this is the time to open up a can of something on a visiting Jedi.

From reading that, it's as if Palpatine almost mutates into good old Chancellor Palpatine. I guess I always thought that Palpatine could only hide as Darth Sidious because of his cloak. Ah well, this is a nice spy report. :)

I'm lost and confused. It is offical that he is not a shapeshifter. How is this possible? Is TF.n making stuff up again or is this legit? Everything TF.n has said so far seems rather far-fetched or fake like the Tarkin pics.

The powers of the force are so broad that it should not be a surprise that Palpatine could use the force to hide his identity. This actually makes sense (in my opinion). Why? Because we see his rotting face and (well part of) his decrepit head in ROTJ. Why does he look so different from the Ep1 or Ep2 Palpatine? Because he has hidden his look via the force. The force has three main sections: control, sense, and alter. There are many powers which exists that even the most powerful of Jedi are unaware of. Why? Because, as I said, the powers of the force are broad. There exisits a myriad of force powers.

Besides, it's been written in the books that Jedi can influence peoples perception of them to make the person see something different. Perhaps since Palpy is the all=powerful mack-daddy Sith, he can even hide his true appearance to the Jedi as well.

Also, make note of the reference to the "visiting Jedi". That's Mace Windu. Hmmm, so it seems that Palpy will be giving Windu the "SHAFT" ha ha couldn't help myself...

Oh no, I perfectly understand that concept and thought about this when reading it. However I feel that this contradicts some of what has been said in the Hyperspace chats.

I don't know how I could have thought that you did not understand it... you asked...how is this possible? *shrug*

Well I did say I was lost and confused. I can see how you got that I did not understand that. ;) Thanks.

No, there aren't many theories that I am not aware of.

What I meant by lost and confused was in the aspect of what was discussed in the chats. But coming to think of it they said he will have many appearances or something to that degree. It was just that in the last chat by that new guy who is taking over Hyperspace he said Sidious was not a shapeshifter. What threw me off was the offical confirmation. Not only that but I think a lot of what has been appearing on TF.n is fake. Some of what they have posted is outrageous (General Grievous). I mean it is not impossible but improbable.

Okay. :) Yeah, some of that information from TF.net is a little odd. (I am asking this because I don't know!)--Is shapeshifter and changling the same thing? Zam Wessell seemed to be able to change the shape of her facial profile...not just change the color of her face. If this is true, I would not classify Palpatine/Sidious as a shapeshifter per say. Maybe it is up to interpretation...the hyperspace fellow may not have thought of Sidious as a shapeshifter because Zam is a shapeshifter. Hence, Sidious just uses the force to change. (Not really a changling or shapeshifter in the "natural" aspect. Anyone understand what I mean? :crazed: Am I making any sense?? :crazed:

This idea of Palpatine "hiding" his true visage sounds really cheesy to me.

I always assumed he looked that way in ROTJ because he was just really old.

Meh.

Well, he's not shape shifting like Zam does exactly...he still looks like McDiarmid even in Jedi, just really old and rotting.....Zam's change is full on shape shifting...so what the said in Hyperspace is TRUE, from a certain point of view ;)

Watch Attack of the Clones... and at the start when they're in Palpatine's office, he says "an old friend... like Master Kenobi?" Pause it and look at his face, a real Emperor Palpatine moment. He has the smile just like Palpatine had in Return of the Jedi.

I agree that it should be just how Palpatine looks and plus, in the 20 plus years to Jedi, he'd age quite a bit plus the dark side ages him even more. I think it should just be a natural thing and not a shape shifting thing.
If you look at Sidious' face from what you can see of it, he doesn't look like the old Emperor Palpatine, he just looks like an angry Chancellor Palpatine. :)
