Yes i'm back in case anyone missed me.I think my computer crashed and the only way for me to get it back up was to reformat the C drive.:frus: Yes I lost everything I had but I will be able to reload most and refind what I can't.And by the way,Yes it did suck on a big scale.I don't know if it was a virus or not but the computer wiz at the store told me it was either a virus or a bad mother board.Thank God it wasn't a bad mother board.Everything is working again and I'm sure gald to be back.Started getting the dt,s from not being able to come to this forum.:crazed:

Strange that, my PC has been playing up a lot in this last week. I had two viruses attempt to leech their way into my system. Thankfully Good old Norton antivirus caught the buggars and killed the files saving me a lot of sweat trying to fix things on my own.
I know exactly how you feel though Obi Don, I lost everything a while back when a virus killed my operating system. The MTX virus i think it was. Came in as a trojan hidden inside a worm. Very nasty indeed! Hence the heavy duty antivirus software. Haven't had much trouble since apart from the software treating every macro and script as suspicious and completely blocking them. But at least it detects stuff before it gets into the system. Hope you invested in some decent antivirus software yourself. be a shame to have to reformat the drive again............ ;)

Welcome back.
My computer crashes a lot too. I think it might be the virus called Windows'98.:p lol

Can't be as bad as the Windows ME virus.
It also doesn't help that my cooling fan burned out and I've been too lazy to replace it so I just popped the case off and stuck a little $9 room fan from Wal-Mart up against the motherboard. Works great!

Windows 98 might be the problem:D because eveythings ok now and I kept the back cover off to help keep it cool.Any who I hope things stay ok.I don't want to go through that again. You can also bet I got a good antivirus and looking into firewalls and stuff like that.

firewalls generally only work well on networked computers. i bought the Norton personal firewall only to discover that it wouldn't work on a single PC. So read the small print carefully. Much more effective is something like a script blocker in conjunction with the antivirus programme. Not to advertise the product here but simply as a point in case, I use Norton as I said which comes with a years free updates of virus definations for disinfecting and also programme tweaks. you can configure Norton antivirus to block malicious scripts used in web pages (pop ups and counters) so that the virus never actually reaches your PC while the antivirus active protection runs constantly in the background while you work or browse and freezes the PC with a whole wizard of help if a virus is discovered. This stops the virus getting into the system and allows you to choose the method of dealing with it: disinfect/quarantine/delete/send to Symantec for analysis.
now I'm a complete idiot when it comes to PC matters and I can use the programme no sweat. I deal with viruses by deleting and using the auto update feature to make sure I get the latest virus definitions. I can't reccomend this software enough.
But, having done Norton software no end of good in free advertising (sorry Sirsteve, wasn't intended :)) I reccomend running the defragmentation function at least once a month or weekly if you do a lot of work on your PC. My sister runs a business off hers and never ran de***. No wonder her PC kept crashing with all the data scrambled all over the place. Defrag simply sorts commonly used files into better order and tidies the hard drive for faster easier usage. Speeds up the PC and reduces the risk of crash. But Norton system works will do it better....... :)

Biggin' for some reason this just cracked me up! Good idea, the force is strong with this one!

Barada, that room fan may put out too much static and could blow micro-craters into your motherboard if dust hits it (or your finger, though your body has enough static to do that without the fan involved). You may want to get a fan soon for your PC or you could blow holes under the tracing and have system problems from that (which are REALLY hard to detect, from what I understand). However, if it's working for you and your PC isn't SO important to you, it's probably not a big threat.

Wow, I never realized all that stuff could happen. BUT I've already decided to just use this system until it dies a slow, nasty death; then fork over the cash for a new computer. It's a slapped together piece of crap that's only redeeming feature is: it's lasted me this long without exploding and setting my room on fire.
Thanks for the advice though, I'll keep it in mind for when I buy a system that I give a crap about.

I had Windows ME once. It's the worst thing since the Star Wars Holiday Special.

It seemed like it was crashing on me every 5 minutes. Which isn't much worse than Windows 98.
I might switch to Windows XP. I hear it's a lot more stable.(yeah right. I could crash it in under 10 seconds.)

I've heard from a lot of folks who said their XP simply reboots while they're using the system without warning, yet leaves no mention of why in the error logs.

I like windows 98vII. I've never had a moments bother with it. The only times my PC has had problems is because I over taxed it with tasks and it got confused or I overheated it. I had a bad virus which ate the hard drive but since getting protection from a well known company... I've been running like clockwork only much much faster :p
I don't fancy a system that doesn't allow you to make a back up of the system. All this 'go back' business about resetting your PC to a date before the crash is a little iffy to me. I like to see what's happening and deal with it personally, not have the software dictate what action is to be taken. Smacks of artificial intelligence and I don't want a PC that can outsmart me so I'll keep my clunky old faithful thank you very much Mr. gates. Stuff your windows 2000 and windows millenium and your windows XP!

That happend to me a lot with Win98 and WinME. I'm really wanting to get WinXP but I'm a little bit of a skeptic about it.
