View Full Version : News From The Presidio - OT DVD's, New TV Series, Minor E3 Spoilers!!!

Well, some news did come out of the big merchandising deal at the Presidio. I'd recommend taking it with a grain of salt. But if it's true, we're in for a good year next year. September is the date for the OT DVD's. And Lucas/Lucasfilm is possibly going to start up a new TV series. Maybe even two, one of them being live action. If this news is true, 2004, 2005, and 2006 will be amazing. Here's the scoop from AICN.com. :)
From the Star Wars Summit at The Presidio comes this report from The SF Fog!
Hey folks, Harry here.... fresh from Lucas' Presidio Star Wars Summit for all you soon to be fellow Clone Wars junkies... these damn commercials on Cartoon Network are killing me. That shot of Anikan pawing at the window as the fleet takes off as Padme watches... SO NICELY DONE... the framing of the shots feels more honestly old fashioned Star Wars than anything in the modern films, but that's because well... supergeeks are in control, thank god. Meanwhile, part of the masterplan roll out has been revealed as well as the first screened footage of Episode 3.
Harry:
I just came from the Star Wars summit at the Presidio in San Francisco. It was Star Wars-licious!
The attendees were subjected to Star Wars marketing statistics, product licensing and tie-in possibilities and PowerPoint presentations. Yawn for most, but I'm a freak and love that sort of stuff.
Some interesting things came to light. The marketing timeline for Star Wars is as follows - This week, The Clone Wars, then the original Star Wars trilogy is being released September 2004, then Episode 3 teaser advertising begins in January of 2005, Episode 3 May 2005, Episode 3 DVD/VHS November 2005. One little fun fact - seems that they have TWO Star Wars television ideas floating around the ranch...one would be animation and the other - LIVE ACTION. These television projects would be in 2006. Let's hope they're better than the Star Wars Christmas Special, or those Ewok films.
But the REAL meat and potatoes was the Episode 3 footage! Some cool as hell stuff. Anakin is looking darker than ever. Dark clothes, with what appears to be some scars on his face. They showed one seen with Obi-Won, The Emperor and Anakin crashing their ship into a planet as the ship burns.
They showed some animation of what will be OB1's transportation at one point in the film. A large lizard that's able to walk upside down and scale walls.
*minor spoilers*
Oh - and they showed some green screen footage of the final lightsaber fight between Obi-Won and Anakin. It looked colossal. The lightsaber fight to end all lightsaber fights. Evil wins, we all know that. The intensity with which the two were fighting was phenomenal. Seems the final battle takes place on a lava planet, and at one point the two are hoping back and forth on hovercrafts floating over the lava.
That was all I saw, and it got me moist as a snack cake down there. They also showed a "behind the scenes didn't we have a blast filming Episode 3" documentary
At the end they had an extremely funny theatrical production - The Star Wars Trilogy in 30 minutes. I think it played at Comic Con too. Patrick Gorman, the author, has basically done a reduced Shakespeare version of Eps IV- VI. Funny stuff, and a great way to end the presentation portion of the show.
We were then escorted by storm troopers to Jabba's Palace for a reception. Drinks and networking with Darth Vader, Chewbacca and eventually Lucas himself. He did a cameo and a lap, apparently he was having some editing problems...probably putting more new stuff in the "original" trilogies.

Well ... looks like they're thinking up ways to keep me hooked for a while.
"Plasticfetish, plasticfetish ... c'mon old timer ... it's time for your meds and then a sponge-bath. We'd better hurry because that new Star Wars show you wanted to watch is going to be on soon. Oh, and your great-grandchildren called on the holo-phone to say that they've sold your toy collection on eBay for a million dollars. It gave them just enough to buy 3 new pairs of Nikes."
Most interesting to me, was that I didn't know Lucas was all moved into the Presidio yet. Have they built studios and stuff there already or is it just offices?

I think they just used it as a staging ground. Maybe Lucas got tired of people's sticky fingers at the ranch. So decided to rent the Presidio and use it for this big merchandising thing. :)

Woah, sweet. Good to hear the OT DVDs are set for 2004. A TV show?!?!? Who would be in it? I bet the cartoon one will be made by Genndy again, but hopefully longer.
Hovercrafts over the lava? Hmm . . .

Grains of salt required: too many to count. :)
That said. . . .
Two TV shows? Maybe a live action show about Corran Horn and a cartoon of Chewbacca's early adventures (possibly with the Shyrriwook dialogue translated into English)? We can only dream.

I sure hope its true because it all sounds great. I remember Genndy talking about wanting to do a cartoon following the early adventures of Han Solo and Chewbacca so if the CW shorts went over well this could be the animated idea.

Here another bit of info from thedigitalbits.com rumor mill:
11/6/03
Well, we've finally heard from our sources on that meeting that Lucasfilm held yesterday at the Presidio with their retail partners. Here's the skinny, and you guys are gonna love it... Star Wars: Episodes IV, V & VI are coming to DVD in September of 2004. The animated series of Clone Wars shorts appearing soon on the Cartoon Network will also be released on DVD, possibly before the end of this year. The teaser campaign for Episode III will begin in January of 2005, leading up to the May theatrical release. Finally... Episode III will hit DVD in November of 2005. This is going to be all over the Net soon, and you can already read more about it at Ain't it Cool News. Keep in mind that none of this is official until Lucasfilm publically announces it... but this is certainly, at long last, the real deal.
Stay tuned...
I hope this holds true! :sur:

TK924, just like TheForce.net they are using AICN.com for their news source. So it could all collapse if the SF FOG turns out to be just playing people. We'll have to wait and see. I'm inclined to believe it more then disbelieve it though. Since none of it is really gee-whiz, unexpected news. :)

Precisely.
Haven't we learnt anything from Obi-Wan's teachings? ;)
Still it's a rather big surprise that the OT will be due in 2004. I suppose it's a way for LFL to generate interest in the last film. I really do see it as an Episode III marketing ploy rather than a genuine effort to get the OT out on DVD once and for all. I think they realised that they couldn't mine yet another VHS release for this trilogy and that this was the only way to go.
As far as further related projects, I'm well chuffed to hear that they'd go to television to continue the story. I would prefer an animated show over a live action one as I would think the live action one would suffer the fate of so many Sci-Fi fantasy series that have aired over the last few years.
Well, if all of this is true, we should be happy people.
Happy Friday to everyone!!
Where does it say that the OT DVDs will be released?
I just assumed it meant another VHS re-release to hype up E3. ;)

They are going to discontinue on December 31 making the EI and EII DVD's. I have a (I don't know) feeling about this. Well this must mean something. I think the DVD's are coming out. Afterall in a print they fixed the lightsaber colors for Obi-Wan and Vader during their duel.

Laserdiscs haven't been made for years now. I think some companies may still make the players, but they're Dual LD-DVD players. You can get used ones fairly cheap though, on-line. The Star Wars boxset may cost you a bit though. Even though it's less on the secondary market then it was when it first came out.
The Definative Collection boxset (original cuts of all 3 films, THX mastered with extras) retailed for 249.99 when it was released. And the SE trilogy boxset (SE cuts of all three films, basically like the VHS SE set) was 124.99, if I recall correctly. :)

I saw this on TheForce.net (http://www.theforce.net/holonet/index.shtml#22779) yesterday:
Just following up information to your stories about the Classic Trilogy on DVD; our upcoming releases bulletin lists Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as being released by 20th Century Fox on November 4th, 2004. This information came to us via FOX themselves, so it's 99% reliable.
One other note, prices won't be known for sure until approximately 3 months before release. And as of today they're listed as separate releases; there's no Star Wars trilogy box set listed though it will be released, presumably. I thought it was interesting as Indy isn't available separately.
I think I'd rather have them released seperatly :).

I'd say go with a Pioneer LD player if you can Turbo. They made the best players by far IMO and I've never had a problem with mine. Avoid the players with the 5-disc CD carousel though because they've been known to crap out (to many moving parts). Most important though is to find a player that reads both sides of the disk otherwise you'll be getting up half way through the movie to flip it manually. Also make sure it has a Digital Output if you're running a 5.1 audio system. If you do have a 5.1 system you'll also need to purchase an RF Demodulator to decode the digital signal. Good Luck :)

Lucas Confirms DVD Changes to Classics
Tue, Jan 06, 04 02:08:12 AM EST
Rob sends us this interesting note:
A little something I noticed today while browsing in Barnes & Noble today might be of some interest to other Star Wars fans. It's not much, but in Robert J. Emery's The Directors: Take 4, there is a chapter dedicated to George Lucas and his work. In it, George Lucas discusses his revisions to the Classic Trilogy that we are all familiar with in the Special Editions. However, at the end of that section, Lucas mentions that when the Classic Trilogy is released on DVD he will finally be able to release the films in the way he had originally intended.
He doesn't come out and say it directly, but I think it is fairly safe to assume that he intends to make additional changes to the Classic Trilogy. Either way, there are some good things in this book would recommend the series to any interested in filmmaking.
Sure sounds like it to us as well.

I don't see how this 'confirms' that he is making more alterations. By "he will finally be able to release the films in the way he had originally intended" may be refering to the picture and sound quality, as Lucas has always strived to achieve the best quality for his pictures.
I admit that it probably DOES mean more changes, but I don't think we should jump to that conclusion until he actually says "more changes" :)

I actually saw a long list of what the proposed changes to the original trilogy were going to be. It was on a French site, and my French being a good fifteen years dormant, I couldn't follow the nuances, but could follow a broad view. I also only had time to skim it, but it seems like a lot of them are the usual nonsense of replacing cantina characters, etc.
I don't think any of this really constitutes a SPOILER WARNING, but there it is anyway.
The Duros in the cantina will be replaced by Neimoidians. Also PT aliens like the Dugs will be inserted into the Cantina.
The Emperor footage in TESB will be replaced with footage of Ian McDirmid, and will include additional dialogue. I think scenes with the Emperor may be inserted into ANH as well.
Vader unmasked and in spirit form will likewise be replaced with Hayden C. footage.
I think they mentioned Jabba the Hutt getting a makeover, but think it was limited to the new ANH footage, which doesn't really match any of the other Jabba footage anyway.
I also seem to remember mention of Boba Fett appearing without his helmet. Ditto some of the stormtroopers.
There were paragraphs of the stuff listed. It was like reading an issue of Video Watchdog, only in French. That's all I can remember off the top of my head. If I can find the link again, I'll post it.

Well, they'll never be as detailed in extras as the LOTR box sets. LOTR was made in an era where things are filmed specifically for the DVD's. Where as the OT films, they weren't so obsessively tracked. I'm sure they can dig up enough for a 2-disc set. But it still sounds like we're only getting 4 discs total for all three. :)

Some possible news on the release of the OT DVD's. From the Digital Bits. :)
This is WAY in the rumor category, but it's worth noting that the DVD Soon Canadian retail website has posted (https://www.dvdsoon.com/show-title-details.xml?uid=106445) a 6-disc Star Wars Trilogy: Collector's Giftset as coming from Fox on DVD on 10/19. We don't know if it means anything, and we would caution you greatly against putting much faith in it. But about a million readers have been e-mailing us links to this over the last few days, and many inform us that DVD Soon "was one of the first retail sites to post correct Indiana Jones DVD pre-order information." They're not the only one saying Tuesday:
May the Force Be With You? - 2:37pm
The Star Wars rumor mill continues with a very juicy story currently breaking across the web. Apparent inside sources have leaked that Lucasfilm and Fox Home Entertainment will announce the original trilogy this Tuesday, February 10th, as a four-disc box set due on September 21st. We contacted Lucasfilm to see what truth there is to the story, who replied that they have made "No official announcement" of a release, and Fox Home Entertainment has no comment. So until Tuesday, expect message forums across the world to continue to rage, and watch this space for an update as soon as we get any further information.
Remember last week how we told you to expect Lucasfilm's announcement of the release of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD sometime between now and May? Well... you MIGHT not have to wait as long as May after all.
Both The Force.net and Rebel Scum have today posted a rumor that Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox will be making their official Star Wars DVD announcement next week, likely on Tuesday. Their information again confirms that the films will be released in a 4-disc set, like the Indiana Jones DVDs, and that the street date is set for 9/21/04.
The interesting thing is, we'd actually heard this same information from some of our industry sources a few weeks ago - folks who have been extremely reliable over the years. But we know this subject is a real hot button with DVD fans, so in the interest of not getting everyone worked into a frenzy, we've been sitting on it until we could confirm it better. So is it the real deal? Well... keep in mind that announcements like this are never set in stone until they're set in stone, so to speak. I would still absolutely regard this as tentative. Lucasfilm could announce Monday instead of Tuesday, or they could wait until the following week, or the end of the month. That said, it's definitely our belief here at The Bits, based on the best information we have, that an official announcement of some kind is very close.
So let's wait and see what next week brings, shall we? Just maybe good things. Stay tuned...

So, these'll be the SE's, i presume, eh??? The OT these are not!! :crazed:
Still, i'll be happy to see the SE's on DVD. If they could maybe touch up Jabba and fix the greedo scene (never happen), i'd shut my mouth. :D

It's still the original trilogy, just the special edition versions. You'll never get the original versions on DVD, most likely. It's just like TPM and AOTC's are part of the prequel trilogy, even though they're sorta special editions. :)

As I glance into my crystal ball, I forsee in the not soo distant future a dvd collection of the original trilogy (soon to be sextogy?) encased in a Darth Vader shaped case.. A TV show chronicaling the events of the Jedi purge that occur after Episode 3.. Hey, maybe all them days in Psychic school are finally paying off.. one can only hope...
