View Full Version : Which item in your collection do you find hardest to display well?
Irrespective of how good in quality a particular toy is in its own right, which toy do you find looks really crap on your shelves?
For me the Naboo starfighter wins hands-down. Not a bad toy but if not part of a diorama it just does not display well. Because its so flat a lot of vertical space on the shelf goes to waste and the distinctive yellow simply looks out of place alongside the relatively dull-coloured OT vehicles.
What toy are you constantly trying to display in more innovative ways and failing at miserably?

Good topic! :)
I agree on the Naboo fighter. Great ship but lousy next to everything else in comparison. Though I haven't yet done it, my plan is to "fly" all of the ships from the ceiling in a kind of mock battle or something. That's one solution.
I've had trouble with displaying the standard action figures primarily because they are so small. If they are too high, you can't see them. Too low and the same problem. Displays of these seem to work best at waist height to head height and no higher.
I have a ton of posters and nowhere near enough wall space to put them all up in an attractive way.
I have 3 replica masks (Deluxe Vader, Deluxe Biker Scout, Rocketeer) and not enough room for a nice dust-free area to put them. Their breadth makes using most standard shelving units difficult.

I have mine "flying", doing a right bank and it looks great. I actually have quite a few flying. I'm running out of space to put them all. Another consideration is the height of the vehicle (shuttle, B-wing).

Same thing here. On my bookcases I ended up using some 1x lumber to create different levels, 3 levels deep; there's just not enough book case space!

Have you considered some type of case mounted to the wall, the way animal heads sometimes are displayed? A little spotlight on them to highlight them?
I can see this thread is a clear winner in the popularity stakes. A good topic? I think we forgot to tell the others.
You're right about figures Stillakid. My jabbas palace(POTF diorama) set-up is way above eye level but then again I've always preferred my cantina(POTF) set-up, with the bar its far more elaborate. And I'm missing a lot of Jabba's palace figures so I tend to see it as my lesser child so up it goes onto the shelf above.
Hanging vehicle isn't something I've got going. I tried putting hooks in the ceiling and just couldn't do it. If the force really was with me in all the Star wars figures and vehicles I'd have been able to do that :D It would certainly open up a lot of display space and I could have more impressive looking set-ups. The more stuff I get the more cluttered my displays get.
And Dr Evazan I tried 'extending' my shelves outwards. I've got loads of hardback 'Wildlife' annuals with plain dark backs facing up on a lot of my shelves. Its added a few inches and I can have more elaborate displays but it looks nasty.
The other toy I used to have trouble displaying was the Detention block playset but it has finally, after all these years, found its home.

Get some toggle bolts with a screw on hook. You have to drill about a 1/2" hole to feed the toggle through, but the hook will not fall out. I have 6 ships hanging and I think that's all I will do.

I would have to say my mint on card unleashed Vader. I do not want to hang him because he is so heavy it may crease up the card. I find it hard to display him because if I put him on a shelf he would gather dust and would be leaning forward!!

This is a tough one. I would probably say the Episode One Theed playsets - although that is probably more due to the fact that they don't look right in the first place.
But I'd like to say a word in defence of the Naboo Starfighter. It is probably he only star wars ship that has been on permanent display for the past 4 years. It sits on top of my bookcase, on the corner - and because it is so perfectly balanced it looks like it is in flight.

Hey Stilla - in regards to your helmets, I'm not sure if you have the room, but target, kmart and walmart all seem to have the same type glass case bookshelf. Things look great, they have 4 shelves, and of course glass fronts. My helmets fit great in them, and I can fit three helmets on each shelf. ( pretty much the brunt of my collection are helmets ) of course being incased reduces the dust.. The cases run about 100 bucks a pop.. a bit more at target.. etc. but they look very nice, and if ya get a few from the same place, they actually line up together quite nice leaving the tops for a great looking diorama.
the things that gives me the most trouble to display are all my lego sets.. no damn room!

TIE Interceptor, definitely. Stupid wings bow out after sitting for weeks beside my TIE Bomber and Vader's TIE. Plus the wings stick out past my glass shelves, making them seem even more out of proportion to the other fighter's wings than they already are!

I hear that, my Lego sets are taking up space on my Kitchen counter (see attached) (sorry about the dishes in the sink, my son was supposed to take care of them) I bought some inexpensive shelves at Target or Wal-Mart, then just today I took a shelf that matched in color and made a bridge because I was running out of counter space. I also have trouble displaying the armys of Lego Stormtroopers, and battle droids.

Hey bobafrett, do you cook much? lol! Do you have fig's and diorama's in kitchen cabinets like Tycho?
Seriously, they look great! And you get to enjoy them whenever you go into the kitchen!

I'm thinking that a Cantina set up (and a Dex's Diner) would mesh a little better with the overall decor. :)

An idea just occurred to me. Instead of merely stringing the ships up on the ceiling with fishing line or wire, why not afix them to the ceiling fan so that they really fly around in a never-ending space chase? Assuming one could do it safely it could actually be cool as hell!

The two major things I have trouble displaying are my UCS Yoda and two WM display headers. Both are packed away right now because I have no idea where to put them.I've thought about screwing those 'eye hooks' into the foam on the cardboard displays and hanging them from the ceiling onto the wall.I'm not sure it would stay though?Superglue might help it..
Anakins podracer is also a tricky one to set up,especially on a bookcase.

Does making a bowl of cereal count as cooking? No, I usually only microwave some frozen meal, and occasionally I turn the oven on to bake some cookies. That's about the extent of the use my kitchen gets. I wish I could get enough shelves to display all my lego sets in one area. I mean I have all my 12" figures in one area, all my carded 3.75 inch figures in one grouping.
Insane Jedi girl, I have a great many collection items I'd like to display, but simply have stored away ecause of the lack of space to do so.

Heres a quick gander at how I have my collection set up. Most of my legos are still boxed and crying to get out..
As you can see, the collection doesnt all say Star Wars but Autograph hound as well..
And Bobafrett - you cant see the jealously oozing - but it is. I wish I had a few of those awesome sets. Now I can live vicarously through your pictures! Thanks!

Hey Tonysmo, it's nice to see you have other interests besides Star Wars, I notice Nascar collectibles in there in particular. Very cool! And believe me, I wonder why I keep buying so much stuff, if I didn't have charge cards my collection would be much smaller, as well as my debt. Thank you for the compliment though!

Naboo Starfighter makes an incredible hanging piece.
Acklay has to be my most challenging display. He's huge and I have yet to master a good pose for him (her?). :ermm:

Nice looking collection! Take a look at the attachment. My Vader is the pricey Deluxe model so it's radius is too big to go on a standard shelf without some overhang. Unfortunately I don't think that those shelves in your pic will work. I think I need something more custom, like the nice one you have for that Clone on top (nice looking bucket by the way. Where'd you get that one?)

The bucket helmet up top is the cereal helmet from Canada. Cheapy, but it was the 1st one I could get. The case used to hold a full size Seahawks helmet autographed by Warren Moon.. I sold off that helmet and another to make room for more Star Wars helmets.. call it culling? heh. The case was leftover, so I put it to good use.
Like Nascar - and have a few autographed cars. I think they look nice. Then a few autographed balls from most of the sports..
I used to have a pool table with a train board over it and a huge lego town. That was many years ago. I hope to do the same thing again this time with the Star Wars theme..
and stilla,, I have to confess, I stole your avatar of the scout profile you used to use a few years ago.. :o I used it in my work email for the longest time.. It was soo kick - um.. butt. and funny.. NO ONE knew what the hell it was.. had to send them real pictures of a scout and then they were still undecided. so uh.. thanks! just lettin ya know Im a big bikerscout fan as well. :D

I don't have much of a problem with my Legos except for that dammed MINI AT-ST. You have to pose it just right to keep it standing and even then the head swivels when the bookshelf is on gets even a slight nudge.
I have major problems with just about any battle droid because they absolutely require a figure stand and all the ones I've used don't accomodate their smaller pegholes. However I have on one my Aayla Secura's base getting a kick in the schnoz by the blue one and it seems to be OK. Also the one floating Jedi library droid always falls over on it's "base." I used to display the Deluxe bikini Leia with cannon and could never get her posed well enough to stand longer than a few hours.

Maybe it's the light, or the angle, or the glass case, but that cheapy Clone looks really good.
Yeah, unfortunately this Vader is too big for those cases too. Looks like a custom job. I'd like to "store" it on top of the rest of Vader's body, but that project is a few years off. :) I'll get around to putting my Scout costume on a manniquin as soon as I make enough room for it. Then the Rocketeer...
