View Full Version : Vehicles, coming full circle...or...What is Hasbro thinking?

OK, somehow I sorta missed that the Darth Vader TIE was set for an upcoming release in 2004. I had heard rumors of it's possible release, but Steve has it listed as an "unknown exclusive" in 2004.
So here is what I see.
Back in 2000, TRU was clearancing A-Wings, T-16s and Darth Vader TIE Fighters for $5.00 and had much difficulty moving them. At the same time, TRU was the only place I could find these. They sat for months!
Fast forward to 2003/2004, Hasbro repaints the A-Wing and sells it as an exclusive at Target and charges $20.00! Now they will be giving us another Darth Vader's TIE Fighter as a store exclusive, probably for $20.00 (or $30.00 if it goes to KB). What's next, Luke's T-16 re-painted for $20.00?!?!?
Will Hasbro come full circle with these? What made Hasbro think that re-releasing so many vehicles that had seen stores just 3-4 years ago and didn't sell at $5.00 each would make money. Sure, the A-Wing seems to be moving pretty well, and the KB TIE has even moved (during mark downs  ). But why did they take the gamble to begin with?
And what is with this new kick to give us lots of vehicles. Look at the POTJ line, or even the EP1 line, we just didn't get that many vehicles.
Sure, POTF2 put out a lot of vehicles (19), but that line lasted from 1995-1999, whereas the SAGA line(s) (I am including the CW lines here) has cranked out more than the POTF2 line in just under 2 years, 23 including Store Exclusives like the KB with Obi-Wan re-release.
Obviously we are buying them, otherwise Hasbro wouldn't keep making them. And $20.00 seems to be the sweet spot. Let's take a look at a few $20.00 vehicles recently released:
CW Anakin's Star Fighter (Re-tooled/re-painted)
CW AAT (re-release)
CW Geonosian Star Fighter
CW Hailfire Droid
CW Jedi Star Fighter (re-release/re-paint)
SAGA A-Wing (re-release/re-paint)
SAGA Luke's Speeder (re-release/re-paint)
SAGA Obi-Wan's Star Fighter (original release)
SAGA Jango's Slave 1 ($25.00)
I have passed on several vehicles over the last couple of years, sticking mostly with the OT vehicles, TIE's, A-Wing, etc. In fact, I have only bought 3 vehicles form EPII, and those were on clearance for 50% off...or better (Jedi Star Fighter, Clone Gunship and Jango's Slave 1).
So what is it? Do you all like these new vehicles that much? Did you miss 'em the first time around? Do you like 'em better because of the new paint jobs? Are you just a completist? Does anyone buy more than one of each, 1 MIMP and 1 loose perhaps? Is someone going around and building an armada of these?
Has Hasbro cut down on the overall production numbers and found the right price to charge, to move these things?
I want to know.

Ask a Hasbro Rep.:crazed: In the POTF2 days a bought these because they were on sale.
EP1 I didn't buy any ships
POTJ I bought
AT-ST with Speederbike
Saga, I bought
Clone Wars I bought
So It looks like I only bought the Bomber and A-wing as rehashes. I think I did pretty well with not buying doubles.

I missed out on the POTF2 Tie Fighter so i snapped one up when i seen it at KB months ago. The TIE Bomber was something i also missed out on but was able to get one at Walmart last year. I didnt want Vaders Tie Fighter when it was originally released but ive wanted one for some time now so if it was to come back out at around $20 and i would get it.

Not to mention that Hasbro is repainting the Saga X-Wing and making it an exclusive "red leader" starfighter. I think these repaints are crummy. I do not collect vehicles but the vehicles that have gotten my attention and money are:
2 x Saga Tie Fighter
1 x Imperial Shuttle
This is because the shuttle is my favorite SW starship and it is HUGE! Reasons why I do not collect vehicles include spare room and money. Anyway...If I had to guess I would say that Hasbro has found their ideal production numbers and price points. That is why these vehicles are moving quicker than the POTF2 vehicles. The better packaging helps a lot too. These vehicles look much better in those new packages!!!

The packaging, Yes they do all look much better that a sealed plain box. The Shuttle's box looks like crap though. Would any of you buy a re-hash AT-AT is a nice window box?
Some of these vehicles just look really cool with new paint jobs. The A-wing looks lovely, nice packaging and its a small vehicle that wouldn't take up vast amounts of space. My reasons for buying it (if I decide to do so) will be as above and for use in an ROTJ hangar bay set-up. I checked recently and there were 3 a-wings and 3 x-wings in that scene. I'm hesitant in buying this new a-wing despite the above plus-factors because completism might kick in and I'd have to buy every OT vehicle rerelease they ever put out and in any case I don't have space for a permanent ROTJ hangar bay diorama.
The Red leader X-wing benefits from all the above (I assume packaging will be a nice Yavin base or death star backdrop) except in its space-consuming size. And I'd be hesitant in buying it for the same reasons as the A-wing and the cost as an additional factor.
The fact that I can't find most of these rereleases in my regular shop means that temptation won't be so great.
I for one hope they don't re-release the AT-AT. I will want to buy it and will be envious of everyone else who does. However its size and the inevitable high pricetag will probably rule it out for me.

The only vehicles I've bought are smaller vehicle/figure sets, like the Speeder Bikes and Swoops. Here are the vehicles I've bought over the years:
POTF2: Speeder Bike with Scout Trooper (Orange Package); Speeder Bike w/ Luke Skywalker in Endor Gear (Green Package); Speeder Bike w/ Princess Leia in Endor Gear (Green Package); TIE Gunner Station w/ Darth Vader (Green Card); Rocket Flight Pack w/ Boba Fett (Orange Card)
SOTE: Swoop Bike w/ Rider (Purple Package)
EU (POTF2): Concept Cloud Car w/ Pilot; Concept Snow Speeder w/ Pilot; Concept Speeder Bike w/ Rider
SAGA: Tatooine Swoop w/ Anakin; Geonosian Speeder w/ Count Dooku; Speeder Bike w/ Clone Trooper
Clone Wars (SAGA): Speeder Bike w/ Firing Missile and Clone Trooper; Swoop Bike w/ Durge
I really don't have room for anything much larger, although now I'm kinda kicking myself for not buying the SAGA Landspeeder w/ Luke re-hash, as that isn't really much larger than the SAGA Dooku and Anakin boxes.
I suppose Hasbro are doing this for the same reason they keep rereleasing and resculpting core characters (allowing new collectors to get vehicles they missed before), and perhaps the same reason they keep changing the packaging design (keeping the line 'fresh').
Also if you think about it there aren't many OT vehicles left to be made. They won't (probably....surely) make the capital ships like the Executor, ISD, Mon calamari cruisers, Medical frigate. At least not the latter two-casual fans wouldn't recognise them. Then theres only the Rebel transport, Blockage...sorry Blockade runner, Cloud car, Sail barge.....the sandcrawler is on the way....the fleetingly seen Imperial landing craft, the Lars landspeeder-and thats all I can think of. Well maybe there's the pod that the probe droids land in and the troop carrier cars from Yavin and Echo base.
So we can probably expect reissues of every vehicle thats been released so far and also retooled versions of the Falcon, TIE fighter, AT-ST (my personal hope) etc.

as i didn't have the funds or time for hunting during the initial release of many of the vehicles i'm happy that hasbro continues to repaint and re-release them. many of the figures that have been rehashed i already have so they aren't as appealing. i'd love another falcon.

I'm tired of rehashed/repainted vehicles, I already own 3 X-Wing fighters, why would I throw money away for a forth one. I'd rather spend money on a -
Twin Cloud Car
Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator
Trade Federation MTT
More Pod Racers
Dooku's Solar Sailer
Let's finish up the ones that need to be done before we get into the 4th,5th,6th rehashed/repainted vehicles that myself and alot of others already own. Besides, you may need these main line vechicles when the line dies down in 2006-2007. And when that happens, I'm not buying the 29th rehashed/repainted X-wing, 10th Darth Vader Tie Fighter, 15th AT-ST, 12th Landspeeder, and 8th Snowspeeder just to save a line that rehashes/repaints tha same stuff over and over again.

The upcoming 3,3/4" Darth Vader's X-1 Tie fighter will be the Battle Damaged version. Hasbro took the idea from the Action Fleet line (as they did with the "Green Leader A-wing" or : "How to make something new with old stuff").
The DV Tie already appears on listings from HK retailers as "Tie fighter with corrected wing(s)". A picture of a DV Tie in a mock-up packaging have been seen on the web a few weeks ago. There is a curious large part on the right. Maybe it's for a Battle Damaged (Falcon - ANH) spare wing. The wings are removable on the POTF2 DV Tie then it should be interesting to have the mint wing and the damaged one in one box. Just a tough. (I'm quite sure Hasbro will never add another wing... too expensive - for them ).
It will not cost Hasbro too much money to make a minor change and another rehash...
And with Trisha Biggar at HyperSpace said she made DV with ANH-like shestplates costumes for Hayden Christensen in Ep3, seems logical Hasbro want to make the DV Tie available again.

i do have a falcon, but in pretty sorry shape. the years have not been kind to it. thus i'd like a new one. i could try and get one off e-bay, but i hate e-bay. could get an older one at tremendous mark-up from an online site or can wait. with the release of the shuttle last year it seems that eventually hasbro will rehash everything.
