Obviously, mr. BFF, you didn't see "Lost in Translation;" Bill Murray was fantastic.

I am super super super super super PO'd that Sean Astin didn't get a nod for Return of the King. Pure sh-- in my opinion. :D

Ben Kingsley - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
Jude Law - COLD MOUNTAIN
Bill Murray - LOST IN TRANSLATION
Sean Penn - MYSTIC RIVER

Nice to see Jonny Depp nominated, and he should win. Period. Captain Jack Sparrow was a damn fine acting job.

Excellent point about Sean Astin, Guyote.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Alec Baldwin - THE COOLER
Benicio Del Toro - 21 GRAMS
Djimon Hounsou - IN AMERICA
Tim Robbins - MYSTIC RIVER
Ken Watanabe - THE LAST SAMURAI

Don't know any of these. However, Depp should've been nominated for Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Also, the prejudices of the Academy shine through, because Allan Cumming should've gotten a nod (and a win) for his impeccable performance as Kurt Wagner (who vas known in zee Munich Circus as zee mighty Nightcrawler).

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Keisha Castle-Hughes - WHALE RIDER
Diane Keaton - SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Samantha Morton - IN AMERICA
Charlize Theron - MONSTER
Naomi Watts - 21 GRAMS

Don't know. Don't really care about any of them and can't think of a performance off-hand that floored me this year.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Shohreh Aghdashloo - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
Patricia Clarkson - PIECES OF APRIL
Marcia Gay Harden - MYSTIC RIVER
Holly Hunter - THIRTEEN
Renée Zellweger - COLD MOUNTAIN

What the hell? Where is Kea Wong for her absolutely stunning role as Jubilee in X2? There is, like, totally no justice in Hollywood, y'know?

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

Nemo has a lock on this. No question. Though whoever delivers an acceptance speech should take a note from Metallica: "And we'd like to thank Miyazaki for not releasing a film this year!"

Useless category, but I'll go with LOTR 'cause it was kewl. Hulk coulda been nominated for that weird "comic book on screen" direction, but it certainly doesn't bother me that it wasn't. Spawn did that thing better years ago.

Ahem. "Set Me Free" by the Velvet Revolver? Heard it, Academy? Obviously you haven't. Of course, you're a bunch of tone-deaf morons who committed nothing short of blasphemy by giving some Eminem tripe an Oscar over a great U2 song last year, so I guess it's pretty consistent, at least.

"Into the West" sucks in more ways than anything has sucked before, and though the songs from Cold Mountain are good, they're not great. Going with A Mighty Wind on this. Wonder if they didn't nominate the title track so they wouldn't face the slight awkwardness of having that final line performed on live TV?

As some of my prior responses may have indicated, I feel the Academy's traditional ostracizing of sci-fi/fantasy in general, and especially comic films, has robbed the greatest film this year of the credit it deserves. Give X2 the Oscar, dammit!

And Big Fish seems to be missing, too.

So I'm going with LOTR, the only one I have any interest in.

Nemo or Pirates. They seem to love Master and Commander, though, judging from the nominations.

VISUAL EFFECTS
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

WHERE THE HELL IS HULK? We get a character who makes Yoda and Gollum look like they were done on an etch-a-sketch by a blind kid, and a stupid movie about boats gets nominated? Pirates was second best this year, so of the nominees, it deserves the statue.

How about X2 for the awesome adaptation of the graphic novel "God Loves, Man Kills"? I think LOTR:ROTK had the weakest writing of the three, but it's better than the other nominees.

Of these, uh, Nemo, I guess. I mean, it's a great film, but it's the worst of Pixar's output so far.

Nope, never saw Lost in Translation. I like Depp, though. You could see his acting talent coming through back when he starred in A Nightmare on Elm Street.

But if Murray wins, I will not be upset. That's Ernie McCracken we're talking about!

"Was I talking out loud? Was I? Sorry, good luck."

I mean, we have Depp who does all of these memorable roles, and then there's Murray, who is a master of comedy in his own right. Oh, I'm not even judging their performances based on the nominated film. I just choose who I like better from past experience. I guess that's not really the point of the Oscars, but oh well.

I used to enjoy the Academy Awards but as a young child I was traumatized when one of my favorite movies of all time lost to a movie I knew nobody would care about in 10 years. The year was 1982 and the movie that won best picture was "Chariots of Fire", a decent movie but nowhere near the brilliance of the movie it beat, "Raiders of the Lost Ark". From this point on I put little faith in the ability of the Academy to award sci-fi/fantasy movies with anything more than visual effects awards. I'll watch some of this years presentation only to see if they snub LOTR again. I wish Fellowship would've taken the best picture Oscar 2 years ago because it was the strongest chapter IMO but the Academy might award ROTK as a way of recognizing the entire trilogy.

I've seen most of the movies nominated in the major catagories this year so if I picked the winners they would be....

Bill Murray - Lost In Traslation

Ken Watanabe - The Last Samurai

I'm with ya on this one. Depp was awesome in that movie. As far as his career goes, he only had one bad movie, that musical trash called "Crybaby". I think Depp is definite;y one great actor. He deserves it. BUt if Murray gets it, no lost cause there either.

As far as the other nominees go, who cares. I didnt see any of the other movies and have no intention of doing so. ANd I hope that LOTR fans will be satisifed after this year.

i hate the oscars and all the other assorted award shows out there (it's been years since i watched any of them). it's all political and such. which studio gave the most press to a film, who's been passed over in the past, what genre is a film from. critics are no different than you or i, save someone pays them to give a thumbs up or down to a movie. i've seen 2 nominated films this year - pirates and finding nemo.

to me the least appealing thing that can be advertised about a film is that it's an oscar contender. i'd rather have a multi-multi-million dollar making comedy or sci-fi film on the screen that the critics abhor. i'd much rather skip any arty flick that the critics gush over.

I put little stock in awards shows, especially the Grammys. The "Best New Artist" Grammy is usually a death sentence.

I have less faith in the Oscars due to three little words: "Oscar-winner Eminem."

I am not a big Oscar watcher.

I saw Mystic River the other day, and I was najorly disappointed. The film has no pulse, and the performances were far from extra-ordinary, in my opinion. The movie just felt like a 2 hour tv movie, and was nowhere near Oscar worthy.

It is a travesty that Mystic River is nominated for so many awards, and Big Fish is almost snubbed, as well as Sean Astin being snubbed.

Three comments -

Master & Commander was not that good.

Where are the actors and actresses from LOTR. While ROTK does not give the whole fellowship a legitimate bid there were sterling performances across the board.

Depp or Murray HAVE to win or I'll never watch again.

I can't believe LOTR: ROTK won so many of these damn Oscars...the movie was okay but I don't believe I ever even watched the DVD (yes, I do own the 4 disc crazy-edition and haven't ever watched it since the theater lol ).

Hulk couldn't touch Gollum or ROTS Yoda.

I think "Return of the King" deserved those Oscars more than any other movie that year. I wasn't impressed by "Lost in Translation" and "Master and Commander" bored me to tears. But maybe I'm just being biased because ROTK is one of my all-time favorite movies.

I remember being angry that Sean Penn won Best Actor instead of Johnny Depp. Come on, nobody remembers "Mystic River" anymore. Everyone remembers Captain Jack Sparrow.

I remember Mystic River, good stuff from SP in that one.

Jar Jar Binks is better remembered than Sean Penn in Mystic River, so let's not get carried away with the "everyone remembers" bit. lol Besides, there've been 2 inferior Pirates films since the good one came out, so he's still being promoted in pop culture even today on TV spots. ;)
