View Full Version : The Sopranos Season 5

03-07-2004, 11:21 PM
Pretty cool premiere ! :)

Wow, there were a handful of lines that made me burst out loud with laughter. First of all was a comment by Robert Loggia which I can't repeat here, then Silvio's mid-sentence lecture about the olive oil, and what got me the most was Christopher's irritated "METEOR. METEOR." to Paulie. :D

I like the look of the season so far and I think there are several great storyline possibilities. However, how pathetic are these characters? I mean, what a bunch of filth, eh? Tony is delusional in thinking he could ever win the heart of a class act like Jennifer Melfi and sure enough he shows his true colors when he calls her that word on his way out of her office.
Tony Soprano has always been a dirtbag on the show but I still found him likeable in a weird way . . . but the way he's gotten since the end of last season and now with this premiere, he's just a downright creep.

Great show ! :D

I haven't seen it yet and probably won't for a few months for obvvious reasons, but I've read the recap on the HBO site. I know what you mean bout Tony, especially after the last season (which was my least favorite except for the Ginny Sac episode) he's looking more and more like the biggest loser of the bunch. I know Carmela can be a ^&%$ at times but most of that is Tony's fault. How could any man cheat on a woman like that. Sure there might be some better looking women out there but he's got (or had) an intelligent, loyal, decent (relatively speaking of course) wife who WANTS TO COOK all the time and he treat's her like crap. I'm telling you, if I ever end up with a woman like that I'd thank God every minute for her. I really hope this season's better than the last one. It could turn out like when season 3 made season 2 better. I hope so. I hope Paulie gets more one-liners too.

No way that was Lorraine Bracco's backside, had to be a stunt booty! :beard:

03-25-2004, 04:15 AM
Bosskman, I think Season 4 was fantastic. :)
Ginny Sack is great, Carmine ordering the hit on Johnny and then Chrissy and Sil going to visit Lou DiMaggio, Ralphie nearly getting clipped by that guy in Florida until Johnny calls it off, Bobby getting a promotion (not to mention the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" diner scene), Silvio getting all bent out of shape over Columbus Day, Furio nearly bumping a drunken Tony into the propellors, there are so many things I love about that season. Each season has particular episodes which are favorites of mine but I can honestly say I enjoy each season equally. :)

As for this week's episode, that was easily one of the funniest I have ever seen. I already watched it 3 times and I don't even have it on DVD yet ! :crazed:
Weird thing is that Silvio is not even in it . . . which is odd for me because he's my favorite character. However, Junior, Tony, Johnny, Lorraine (not Braco, but the female capo played by Patti D'Arbanville), Bobby, Paulie, and Johnny all have lines which just cracked me up hard. lol

I'm finally getting to see the episodes in first release this year, thanks for the miracle of a friend having a US satellite feed. I haven't seen the last few minutes of the third episode yet, but I'm enjoying season 5 immensely so far. I kind of felt season 4 spun the wheels a little bit, the only big instances being Junior's trial getting thrown out, Ralphie getting clipped (finally) and the surprise breakup of Carm and Tony. All this stuff was saved until very late in the year. The tension caused by Furio was great, but he was sadly underused in my opinion. I'm interested to see what the result of Ade splitting hammered after movie night will be.

I've enjoyed Steve Buscemi so far, I think his character will add another player to the "funniest line of the week" competition for sure. Paulie's my absolute favorite for that very reason, but this season (so far) it's been the "Girl Scouts" crack in reference to the Bada Bing staff that has taken the cake. Priceless! :D

03-26-2004, 10:13 PM
Indeed, that's the line I was referring to earlier by Feetch. :D

Well I still disagree with you guys . . . season 4 rocks. Chrissy Boy's intervention? PRICELESS. :crazed:

Reason, oh man you need to catch the end of episode 3 for Junior's line, "Make sure you form a seal when you shut that frezer door." Man, I nearly cried from laughing !

03-26-2004, 11:54 PM
Moltesante at the intervention WAS really funny, I had forgotten about that.

Junior has just run away, totally delerious looking for Tony's dad in the old neighborhood at what's now a church - with a slightly darker complexion than Uncle Jun's. Funny stuff, stupid old bugger.

You're right about them being scumbags, they're absolutely filthy. It's the comedy that keeps me coming back for more.

That and the hope that the Russian is still alive, and that Paulie and Chrissy are going to have to chase him through another Jersey swamp in the middle of winter!!!!! :D :D :D

03-29-2004, 02:23 AM
Who knows about that Russian . . . I mean, it definitely looked like a chunk of his head flew off, yet the trail ended and they did an overhead shot which implied he was up in that tree. Maybe he is still there ? :D

Tonight's was another great episode. Some funny moments but very serious, too . . . poor Feetch, going back to the can. :D Poor Larraine, I might feel sorry for her were it not for the racial slur last week and of course Johnny's criticism of her proclivity to whacking other people. I didn't expect her to go so soon . . . interesting combination of locker room hijinks (towel snapping) and execution style murder. :crazed:

Get this - the woman who played Larraine, her name is Patti D'Arbanville . . . anyway whenever I saw her name in the cast credits I kept humming Cat Steven's song "Lady D'Arbanville" to myself and no ****, I just learned that she once dated him and he wrote the song about her. :)

The way AJ talks to his mother is disgusting.

Whoa, and how about that trio of guest stars playing in the card game ? ? ? Lawrence Taylor, David Lee Roth, and Bernie Brillstein. :crazed: Franki Valli is going to be on this year, too.

04-04-2004, 11:22 PM
Another great episode and damnit did I ever laugh hard when Silvio started yapping on that megaphone. :D

There were many other great moments but I sure do like that Vito . . . even if he did clip Jackie Jr a few years ago.

This worked pretty well as a self-contained episode of sorts. That is, assuming the public display in Nuevo Vesuvio is going to last.

04-05-2004, 02:38 PM
I think Christopher is on his way out.

04-05-2004, 02:57 PM
I saw last week's but not this week's yet, it was a pretty good episode. So far I like what I see in season 5. Caesar, I know what you mean about the hunchback scene. That was so funny I laugh out loud everytime I even think about it. Another funny thing from season 4 was when ralphie called paulie's mother. Actually, most of the scenes involving Paulie and his mother were awesome, escpecially the nursing home ones set against those with Tony and his mother from season 1. Priceless.

04-05-2004, 09:51 PM
Good call Bosskman, I liked that rift between Ralphie and Paulie as well.

evenflow, I don't know about your feeling on Christopher. It's certainly possible but as for right now I think he will be fine. However, he can only get so many breaks because of who he's related to . . . so I see your point. Right before the season 4 intervention, Tony told Chrissy that if he was anyone else, he would have gotten clipped and we've seen Paulie tell Christopher this season that he doesn't care who he's related to. So at SOME point, Christopher might get too out of line and Tony will have no choice to but to take him out. He can't risk losing the respect of too many more men. That, and drawing down on the boss in public looks REALLY bad !

That's what I love about this show. You never know what will happen next.

04-06-2004, 11:19 PM
I have been loving this season. I don't have HBO, but I have found a way....to errr.....watch The Sopranos.

Everytime I see Adrianna, I get a sick feeling in my stomach. I know she's gonna get popped eventually, because they are bound to find out. I thought this might be the week they did. I don't know why anyone ever agrees to help the FBI. THat NEVER works out.

I don't think Chris is on his way out. Soon, his fiance' won't be around to cause problems. At least that's what I think.

04-07-2004, 09:08 PM
I think Adriana's days are numbered too. I knew it ever since the ep where she puked all over the FBI office. I get the same sick feeling. As much as I hate to say it, I think Paulie's on his way out too. His rift with Christopher and the situation with the russian are gonna come back and bite him in the arse. Plus, lets not forget his conversations with Jonny Sac. It's too bad because Paulie's one of my favorite character - you gotta love his paranoia.

04-10-2004, 12:48 AM
Well I'm now only one episode behind (finally watched 4 this afternoon). I'm happy Feetch was dealt with in that manner, I was thinking it would be a little odd to try and bump him off - too hard to sweep something like that under the rug and move on (I personally feel that there wasn't enough fallout from the death of Ralphie, there should have been a little more tension resulting from that, more focus on the police side, etc - but that's my job talking). Elliot's use of the "c word" was absolutely brilliant. :D

No update on Uncle Jun this episode. I'm pretty excited see the next one, he's back with Dr. Melfi!!!

04-12-2004, 01:34 AM
I liked tonight's episode but it was my least favorite of the season. It wasn't bad, not at all, I just liked it the least. Paulie and Christopher both had some goofy ignorant comments which I laughed at, Paulie saying "Don't forget Pearl Harbor" even though Kim is Korean and of course Christopher misquoting Survivor by saying "keep your eye on the tiger."

Tony B. is starting to creep me out now. I was surprised at how pleasant he has been but of course now it's time for him to fall off the civilian wagon.

Hey, speaking of dealing with the feds, let's not forget that Barese is also wired for sound and he's still plugging along. Get this, I just watched an episode from Season 3 (the one with the Big P*ssy and Jackie Aprile Xmas flashbacks) and Barese is in there really talking trash about P*ss and how he flipped. Oh man, I totally forgot about that part and it was a real treat to rewatch it in light of our knowledge of his own rat-status from season 5.

Adrianna ***SPOILER***

Adrianna WILL survive through all of season 5 . . . Drea de Matteo is going to be on the new Friends Joey spinoff and *IF* that show takes off, they said Adrianna might leave during season 6 but for now she lives through season 5 and is signed on to do the shortened (10 episode) season 6. I believe I read that in Entertainment Weekly.

04-15-2004, 10:17 AM
My sister said Carmela is supposed to turn into a lesbian. I sure hope not.

04-20-2004, 02:40 AM
Well I caught up a little today; saw episodes 5 and 6. Not quite sure what the hell went on there between Tony B and Kim - that seemed disjointed as did Tony's desire to get back into the family business after the altercation. If he had failed the exam and then blown up on Kim, it would have made more sense. Everything for a reason, I suppose...... but I'm going to have wait and see about that whole episode.

Funniest line of the day: Silvio, after Chrissy is apprehended by the doormen at the Bing: "Oh! Everyone, enjoy your evening. Just an unhappy customer." The Pearl Harbour line was a close second.

:D :D :D :D :D

I think the reason Tony B felt the desire to get back into the family buisness was mostly due to the money he found. After going out with the guys and blowing most of it on gambling he got a taste of the life his buddies were living. The fact the he couldn't join his friends for breakfast and Paulie's comments about going home to sleep for 14 hrs when he had to work with minimal rest didn't help either. How classic was it though watching him try to work in those shoes. lol

This weeks episode was great. The scene where Vito gets caught by Meadow's boyfriend with the security guard was surprising. The confrontation later outside the port-a-potty was hilarious and Vito in that huge Yankee shirt waiting for his date that didn't show was one of the best moments this season IMO. I'm betting Meadow's BF doesn't make it to the end of this season alive. :dead:

05-05-2004, 01:57 AM
I'm a big Aerosmith fan and I've been saying Finn looks like Joe Perry since he first appeared last season. Nice to see them use it on the show !

I don't think anything will happen to Finn. He certainly will not get clipped.
That's part of the reason he proposed to Meadow, I think. He figures it will keep himself alive that way. None of those guys are going to go after the Princess' boyfriend.

And from a writing standpoint, I think it would be incredibly lame for Vito to kill ANOTHER one of Meadow's boyfriends 2 seasons later.

But I could be wrong.

05-05-2004, 09:01 AM
In regards to Tony B...

Once a mobster, always a mobster...

05-05-2004, 03:13 PM
All I have to say what the hell was going on at that construction site. That was a total shock.

Reefer Shark
05-05-2004, 07:00 PM
Well.... I think Finn is gonna get something. It could be a bullet, or it could be something else. It looks like mabye Vito has taken a liking to him after getting caught at the construction with that security gaurd

(didn't see that one coming)

05-05-2004, 09:09 PM
I couldn't decide if Vito was trying to bribe him to not talk about what he saw, or if he was trying to pick him up. I guess he was trying to get some action. But why would he try and nail the boss' daughters boyfriend?

I thought it was good writing with how freaked out he got when he saw the violene that was going on. Personally, I would have taken my suitcase and gone. Meadow was really being an annoying, whiny *****.

I kind of feel bad for Carmella, and I kind of don't. She knew what kind of life he lived, and her pressing for his "off the record" money is bound to get Tony, and her in trouble. I have a bad feeling this divorce could end up with TOny getting arrested. But maybe she realizes that it just isn't going to do any good to divorce him, and I don't see how she can ever "move on with her life".

05-06-2004, 09:04 AM
Meadow was ridiculously annoying. Hey, if Vito tried to pick me up I'd pack my bags and run too, I don't blame the guy.

05-10-2004, 01:14 AM
There's something creepy about the way Chrissy and Tony B. can stand around chatting while crushing human bones as if they were just doing some woodwork.

3 episodes left now and I really hope the blood starts running over this Johnny-Carmine rift . . . everything is set up perfectly so please don't let us down !

05-23-2004, 08:01 PM
After last week's excellent dream episode (not to mention Angelo and Billy get whacked) I am sooooooo pumped up for these last 2 shows.

How about the all star cameos in Tony's dream ?
Big P****y, Richie Aprile, Gigi, Ralphie, and even Mikey P from season 1 --- awesome !

"She likes it when you rub her muzzle" :D :D :D

05-24-2004, 01:30 AM

And here I thought that Adrianna would survive this season. :nerv:

05-24-2004, 09:07 AM
:D Finally, all I can saw is finally they got the rat. lol There is nothing lower than a rat and she deserved much more.

On a side note, I totally saw it coming as soon as she got the call. My girlfirend was like no they are not going to do that, and i pointed out the whole in the middle of the woods factor. Sure enough, I shut my girlfrienf up. :p

05-24-2004, 12:23 PM
Well, I would rate that "rat" much higher than the spousal abuser who turned her over to Tony and Sil . . . I hope Chrissy Boy dies soon. :)

And I also hope that Phil Leotardo gets clipped somehow, and I wouldn't mind Johnny Sack taking out Tony Soprano next season.

Christopher quoting Springsteen while standing right behind Little Steven was absolutely outstanding !

05-24-2004, 02:40 PM
Well, I would rate that "rat" much higher than the spousal abuser who turned her over to Tony and Sil . . . I hope Chrissy Boy dies soon. :)

I am sorry but I learned something from a Bronx Tale:

1. Never rat on your friends
2. Always keep your mouth shut

There is nothing lower than a rat.

05-25-2004, 03:10 AM
I figured they were going to get Adrianna. Once Chris was staring at that family, and how miserable that guy looked, I knew he was going to tell Tony.

The finale should be interesting.

05-25-2004, 09:15 AM
Yeah I cant wait for the finale, at the beginning of the season I thought this was the last one, I guess not. :)

05-26-2004, 07:10 PM
Wow that was a powerful episode. I watched it last night at can't believe I didn't have Adrianna's execution spoiled by someone.

I was really disturbed by Christopher's actions, especially when he was choking Adrianna. I actually liked his character a bit, now I can't wait for him to get whacked. After watching all of the less violent episodes you start to relate and even feel for some of these characters and then an episode like this comes along and you're reminded just how despicable these people are.

05-27-2004, 09:52 AM
Man I must be a monster thinking she deserved everything she got.

05-29-2004, 03:11 AM
Perfectly stated Hellboy, perfectly stated indeed.

Of course, it's just a TV show and as a fictional story, it's fun to get involved with these characters and have fun with the show. But if this were real life, then yes these really would be despicable people.

Hey evenflow, did you miss the lesson about touching a made guy ? Shouldn't Tony be gone by now, considering he once put his hands on Ralphie and later killed him ?

Donnie Brasco taught us that you'll get killed if you stand up for a new guy who turns out to be a rat . . . Chrissy Boy had a ring on Ade's finger and was going to bring her into the family . . . he should get whacked, too.

lol I like how Christopher whines and whines about Tony B getting special treatment, all the while forgetting about his rehab and how Tony S told him "if you were anybody else you'd have your intervention through the back of the head with a steel jacket" (or something like that :D ). Hehehehe, even Junior advised Tony to put Christopher out of his misery, being the drug addict he is. Tony should have listened to Junior last year. :crazed: Junior had Mikey P throw that one drug dealer off a bridge and didn't think twice about taking pleasure in ordering the hit. ;)

06-07-2004, 12:45 PM
In regards to Tony B...

Once a mobster, always a mobster...

Not anymore. :D

06-07-2004, 04:21 PM
I thought it was a weak finale, but at least it looks like Tony will be the boss next season. At least I think thats what they left it as.

06-08-2004, 02:52 AM
I thought it was an outstanding finale !

It had everything I love about this show: violence, comedy, and a hell of a lot more closure than last season's finale. Hilarious scenes with Silvio and Paulie. Tony B. getting absolutely smoked in a mercy killing by his own cousin. Johnny Sack making a call in a skimpy doctor's gown. Tony running like a coward from the feds.

I expected the finale to be weaker than the previous episode but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Looks like a long wait until season 6.

06-08-2004, 05:55 PM
I agree the finale was outstanding.

Tony running from Johnny Sack's property was one of my favorite moments all season and I laughed out loud at Tony's reaction to Paulie modifying his old painting. lol

Tony may be the boss next season but the sense of dissension is looming strong. Silvio's behavior over the past few episodes reminded me of the way Paulie was acting last season. I'd wager someone from his own crew ends up taking him out by series end. Its just to bad we only have a shortened 10 episode 6th season left.

06-11-2004, 04:51 AM
I read an interview clip with David Chase regarding Season 6. He said something to the effect that there would still be some loose ends but hopefully there would be a sense of a story arc. Who knows what that means. From the beginning, Tony laments that things aren't like they used to be. I mean, why did he get Furio in the first place ? He needed a loyal soldier. Will Tony get killed ? Maybe, who knows. Personally, I'd rather see him go down like John did - hilarious. :D

I'm not making the assumption that Tony will become the Boss next season. New York still has plenty of other bosses and I would expect them to want one of their own in there before North Jersey. ;)

Due to my sadness over the completion of season 5 and now the long wait until season 6, I started a new DVD marathon 2 nights ago. I went through 2 episodes each night so I've already polished off disc 1 of 16 (plus 2 full VHS tapes for season 5 since I'll be there before the DVDs come out :D).

Anyway, it's been a real treat because I haven't watched these in quite a while ! It's weird to see how Tony has changed in 5 years. It's weird to see the pilot episode in which Father Phil and Irina are played by different actors. I'm reminded of Adrianna and how she was only credited as "hostess" in the pilot . . . they came up with the expanded role for her after she came on board. Fantastic all around !

It's great to see Big P*ssy again, it's great to see Mikey P (even though I hate him, I love to watch him). Livia Soprano, oh though I loathe her, man is she ever funny at times ! ! !

Seeing Jackie Aprile's funeral episode tonight, I am reminded to clear up an error I made a few pages back - I referred to old man Barese being wired in season 5 when I meant to say Ray Curtos. I believe Albert Barese dies of old age somewhere around season 2 (?) and of course Larry Boy is around from season 1-5. I just got confused between Albert and Ray. :)

08-01-2004, 02:50 PM
Anyone else upset regarding recent news that we'll have to wait until 2006 for the sixth and final season. :dis:

08-01-2004, 03:18 PM
When in 2006 ?

I heard awhile ago that it won't be until 2006 but it sounded like it would early 2006, like January or February, hopefully.

I do know that they aren't shooting til next year so I've been resolved with this for awhile now. :crazed:

08-01-2004, 05:30 PM
When is season 5 coming to DVD? That's what I'd like to know.

08-02-2004, 05:53 PM
When in 2006 ?

I heard awhile ago that it won't be until 2006 but it sounded like it would early 2006, like January or February, hopefully.

Yeah thats what I heard too. According to reports, David Chase hasn't even started writing the final season and is vacationing in France while the majority of the cast have other projects going on. Rumor has it that filming won't begin until March 2005 and it will be at least January 2006 before the show returns.

Still, 18 months seems like a long time to wait for a 10-episode season. I'm sure it'll be worth the wait as usual but I really hate waiting that long. :bored:

11-03-2006, 01:30 PM
I'm watching this on DVD now, and I knew Adriana was going to get whacked. My girlfriend was freaked out when it happened, though. I had to remind her that mobsters are wolves, and a wolf remains a wolf, even if it has not yet eaten your sheep.

I can't help but think the finale will be anticlimatic since that was a big development!!

11-04-2006, 10:50 AM
Traditionally Jon, it seems like the second to last episode of each season is the one with the bigger "pop", so to speak. I actually like it that way because it doesn't leave things open for as much of a cliffhanger.

You're right on time sir, with Season 6 part 1 coming to DVD on Tuesday !
