Who/what made it. It wasn't Peter Mayhew doing it was it?

It was a bear. There was actually an article in a SW Insider when the bear passed. When I get home I'll try to dig it up (Unless someone beats me too it ;) )

I do believe there are some other animal sounds in there as well (to supplement the bear sound) ?

You are probably right. Either that, or Burtt really toyed around with the sounds that he recorded from the bear. I really just vaguely remember the article in the Insider.

I'll look it up. There is a specific audio "recipe" for Chewie's voice. Some of the sounds were played backwards over other sounds.

I think there was also a walrus and/or sea lion.

Update: Straight from Burtt's mouth...

Mostly bears, with a dash of walrus, dog, and lion thrown in.

It sounds like my partner when she wakes up of a morning! :crazed:.

Me: "Want some cornflakes?"
Lady Friend: "Rarrrgh, rrragh rah"

Ben Burtt probably got a recording of her :p!

I think I remember that there was also a violin sound in there somewhere. Modified of course, but it makes some sense.

There's no telling what all's mixed in one of the SW sound effects (excepting when Burtt tells us). The dude's just a genius. :D

What sounds were used to create Chewbacca's famous voice?
Mostly bears, with a dash of walrus, dog, and lion thrown in.

Here's the PROOF!

This is coming from Ben Burtt himself on the official website.

(I did a search on Yahoo looking for - Chewbacca voice sound ) This is the first link it came up with.
