Okay, this one is even cooler than I'd hoped! Great job, Hasbro! The inclusion of a Mouse Droid is just the icing on the cake! Back in '97, with the advent of POTF2, I started refering to figures like Tarkin as the "20 Year Club", that is figures that we had waited between 14 and 20 years to see released. I've wanted this figure since 1978 and it is well worth the wait! Far superior to what we would have had in the 70's anyway. Now we just need Fetipernn Trevagg, Hem Dazon, Yarna, and and a handful of others to complete the top members of this club from my list. Of course BoShek was a much lower ranking member, but I'm thrilled to see he made it, paving the way for others!

Any droid is cool in my book!!! But is R4 and imperial or a rebel droid?

Hasbro is definitely getting better, both at listening to requests and creating top-notch sculpts.

The only complaint I could possibly come up with is that the mouse droid looks like the Death Star Droid's pack-in.

This fig looks great...makes me want that new R5 D4 even more; Is it really to much to ask that these should comes in a 2 pack? - all Hasbro really has to do is a separate head.

Ths mouse droid is not a good pack-in

It's better than a lightsaber or missile which causes the middle leg to go GodZilla leg.

What's to congratulate Hasbro about? All they had to do was the head. The body is the same as R2-Q5 and the others, the pack-in droid is a leftover from the overproduced Death star droid. Big whuppy doodoo! what a lame figure! the head is too short anyway. Should be taller. And I too was under the impression all these years that R4-M9 was a rebel droid. Is this another screw up I smell or have all the books that mention him been wrong all along? Oh I wonder..........

RATING = D- :greedy:

Jargo --- Why so harsh and hostile today?;) Anyway, I must thank you, your custom Silver Death Star droid inspired me to try my own, and it turned out really well. Just amazing.

But back to the subject at hand, I think this is a great figure. Though I must admit, I'm a sucker for droids.

Okay, Hasbro used the same body as all the others --- So did the art designers at Lucas Film in '76! I, for one, and happy that Hasbro is finally developing some astro droid consistancy.

The Head sculpt looks more than movie accurate to me. (Just popped ANH into my VCR which has great freeze framing capability.)

And the paint Deco sure looks sweet.

What's the big deal about the pack-in? Who can't use another mouse droid?

R4 more than exceeded my expectations. Hasbro finally goes out of the way to release another very obscure droid and already we've got people reacting with the disdain I thought was reserved for Jar Jar resculpts. But then it seems all anybody really wants to do on these boards is *****

PS --- I always thought that R4M9 was definitely an imperial. In the scene he appears to be escorting a group of rebel scum off to the detention block.

 is there going to be a new R5-D4?don't get me wrong i looooooooooooove this droid it's about time hasbro gave us a different astromech droid,we got some many R2 units to wag war, jeez, anyway, hay all we need now is a R1 unite, with clear dome:D Bring on more Droids hasbro!!

LTBasker

And all we need to do is paint it black and it will fit as the Imperial R4 unit that was rarely seen but this time it'll blend in nicely having the same body and all. I hope they use the R2-Q5 body for all astromech droids, it would save money by not having to come up with a new sculpt and look sweet at the same time.

I think this baby is SA-weeeeeeeet! I love it when they produce good looking droids like this one. I appears to have all the necessary articulation points at this stage. I will be picking this one up for SURE!

And, YIKES!, Jargo... what's up with that? Of COURSE it would have the exact same body as all the other Astromech droids. I mean... they DO have a good sculpt so why mess with it? I think the cone is the proper proportion to its body, but I think the tilt is throwing you off.

Mouse droid... I could take or leave, but who cares... a pack-in is a pack-in. :p

my PC was in the process of crashing when I posted, forgive my harshness. It aint that bad as far as rehashed figures go. In fact I do like the head with that extra 'eye' on top. I'm going to buy several if I can find them so I can customise a couple for my 'Invasion of the droids' diorama. With millions of R2 units, pit droids, threepio's and battle droids and all manner of other miscreant droids I have quite a fighting force on my hands. :)
Glad I could inspire you Mark2D2 . It looks so cool without the black doesn't it? can't understand why they never re-released it without the black laquer to be honest.
I always thought R4 was a prisoner too. maybe I've been a little naive and need to re-look at those books............... :)

Jargo, you're so right. In fact, I think the Death Star droid looks infinitely better WITHOUT the black. Plus, I am very much a Jawa/Sandcrawler sequence fan, so the silver version is by far my favorite incarnation of this droid. It also takes me back to my vintage days when I was but a wee lad of eight.

But back to R4 --- Hey, you may very well be right about what the books say. (I'm just not into E.U. stuff, so I have no idea about any of that cannon.) I'm merely going on my impressions of R4 from the film. I just figured that the Imperials would simply shut off any enemy droids, not march them off to the detention block...

Anyway, I'll definitely be picking up two of these myself, they'd make cool "Escort" droids for any type of diorama.

PS -- Jargo, your Droid Invasion sounds very cool. I, myself, have long been toying with the idea of Droid City. It'd be a interesting concept, I think. A bunch of runaway, renegade droids have escaped their bondage and set up a tiny metropolis on some out of the way asteroid. Imagine our heros crash landing into such a set up...

Jargo

My take on it was that the Empire would take any personnel as prisoners for interrogation, the droids for reprogramming and any other useful 'finds' then leave the ship and move to a safe distance before blasting the ship to smithereens. I always saw that being what Luke saw in the sky from the moisture vaporator. Not thae battle we see but the destruction of the evidence afterwards.
Anyway.... My droids diorama is still in the works but it entails a droid invasion of Tatooine and a task force of mercenaries sent to destroy the droids. Sixteen pit droids going to work on the Millenium Falcon is gonna look cool! :) I've got too many figures to display in seperate scenes so I have to merge the displays somehow and this seemed the perfect way. Just make up my own star wars story and work from there. Maybe when I have something more concrete I'll post pictures on my website (which is dead right now by the way. Not worth visiting. Undergoing strategic redevelopment ;) )

Back to R4, those markings look like they could easily be screwed up in the factories. I expect to hunt high and low for a perfect one. I sense a bad case of over-spray coming on..... fear the worst my friends, fear the worst......... :p:crazed:

This astromech figure looks pretty cool, but the pack-in is a stinker. In my dream world, this figure would come with another Astromech, the one with the clear dome. Failing that, I'd rather have a new body gimmick than a mouse droid, but I'll take what I can get.

*GASP* Shhh, GNT.
After so many of us have hoped and wished Hasbro would quit with main charecter re-sculpts and do background aliens and droids. Don't jinx it man. I am sure Hasbro would be glad to go back to the un-needed main charecters then give us somthing different. Bring on more droids Hasbro, so many more for you to do.

I love this droid.

I love the color.

I wanted this droid.

I always did think it was a Rebel droid, but the Encyclopedia and Sansweet's Action Figure Archive say it was an IMPERIAL DROID brought on board after they took over the Tantive IV. I don't really care, I plan on using the figure as Astromechs for Rebels anyway. You can imagine this R4 is on any side of the war you want - it's a droid. If the Rebels got hold of it, they'd reprogram him anyway.

All black ones are definitely Imperial, as we only saw them on the Death Star II.

Meanwhile I hope for a good R5D4 sculpt and then 2 repaints (different colored astrodroids seen in the films that we don't already have) for every year for the next 5 years!*

Keep them coming Hasbro!

*[We get about 30 - 35 figures a year - devote 10 of them as follows... [the examples are from 2001 where we got it even better!]

2 Astrodroid droid repaints (cheap - but less expensive than buying all the paint you'll need) [R2Q5, R4M9]

2 Jabba the Hutt aliens [Tessek, Amanaman]

3 Cantina aliens [Duro, Ketwol, Bo Shek, Zutton]

1.5 Jedi Masters from E1 [Plo Koon, Eeth Koth, SaeSae Tiin]

2 Queen outfits to get them done [Sabe, Theed, Black Travel]*

*(the Queen collection could continue for Padme's huge E2 wardrobe).

Meanwhile that leaves at least 20 - 25 figures for army builders, protocal droid repaints, Senators, Pod Racers, and the regulars in various outfits (Obi, Ani, Mace, Jango, Dooku, Palpy, JarJar, Luke, Leia, Lando - that's only 10 more - like we really need another Han, Qui-Gon, Chewie, or Maul... - there's still 15 more figures they could make leaving room for Niemoidians, Senators, characters from Dexter's Diner or the Coruscant Night Club, etc...)

I think Hasbro has realized this - so back to the topic at hand:

MAKE 2 ASTROMECH Re-Paints per Year! (and I'll be very happy!)

Thank you Hasbro (for R4-M9)!!!!!

hello hello yadda yadda new person yadda yadda...

now the introductions are over I'd like to add a few words if I may. I can't see why there's a new astro droid when there are plenty of other far more intersting droids to be made. astro droids are boring as mud. how about Leebo or RA-7 or CZ-3 or LIN-V8K or M-HYD? C'mon and lets finish these scenes off properly Hasbro. If this rumour of a sandcrawler coming next year are true then we'll all be clamoring for droids to go with it won't we? Like the ones I mentioned. And of course the big kahuna - R1-G4. Who isn't going to want him if they buy a sandcrawler? I'm right aren't I - c'mon admit I'm right....you know you want to :D ;)

You may just have a point DARTH DUBIOUS.
Another droid TYoo many droids of late,I'm just not that exited at this point about it Where are all these droids then GNT? Too many droids? Where? The only extraneous one I can think of is the one that came with shirtless Maul but I'd hardly call FX-7 and one astro droid too many. I'm not fussed on the choice of R4 for release as I'd rather they'd done the Imperial one and saved me the hassle of repainting it. But I can't think when Hasbro overdid the droids apart from episode one with the battle droids. Mostly the droids released are short in number and of interest because they are so different from each other. It would be far more accurate to say we've had too many human characters so far. When are we getting all the different aliens and droids and beasties? That would be a more accurate question to throw at hasbro. But then again it's all relative to our own personal tastes and mores. I'd take R1-G4 over this astro droid but this astro droid over another ben Kenobi for instance. See? all relative to tastes and mores. :stupid:

I think astromechs are sweet. I'd love 3 or 4 a year. I'd also dig an r1-g4 or whatever it's called (maybe a deluxe figure with a jawa?). Can't wait for this one, although I'm surprised to find it's an imperial. By the way, I think there's a black r2 unit in the Yavin hangar, but I could be wrong.

I, too wonder where all these droids are that GNT speaks of, as Jargo does. R2-q5, FX-7, Boomer Battle Droid, and K-3po all came out in the past year, but is that really too many? Personally, I'll take as many classic trilogy droids as they can throw at me, as long as they chill a little on the battle droids (although I'm sure we'll see a couple of versions for EPII.). Bring 'em on!:D

I think we need more droids in general, but there were so many differing astromechs that I want each model (unless it's just a lame color change like EVERY astromech in Episode 1). And I love the movie-accurate gimmicks too, can't get enough gimmicks like opening doors, tools, extending arms, etc..

I mean I was slightly disappointed when I heard they had pulled him in favor of the R4. Don't get me wrong I am excited about R4, but R5D4 was one of my favorites when I was a kid and having a decent sculpt( the first was awful) was what I was looking forward to when I first heard about this line. I am really happy and cannot wait for the release of the R4, but R5D4 still needs to be done, Maybe in an anniversary two-pack with an R1( the clear domed version was one I always dreamed about too)

Droidlover --- According to the official site, R5D4 has a cameo in Episode II. So, the popular consensus is that there WILL be an R5D4 released as an Episode II figure. Really, it's the only explanation that makes sense.

Well, some good news then. It appears that R5-D4 was changed to R4-M9 for this last wave of POTJ figures due to the fact according to the Offical Starwars website, he appears in E2. So we will most likely still see him done, but as an Episode 2 figure. Infact in the E2 toy forum, I have a thread about the possibilities of an E2 R5-D4. Go read and enjoy! :)

BTW, the R1 droids arn't the clear domed astromechs, the R1's are antique Capital Ship Astomechs. There is one in the Jawa droid sale, the big black droid. The clear domed units are R3's. I do agree though, that we need both of these droids. Bring em on, Hasbro!!

I just hope that R5D4 actually finds his way into the plastic form due to his appearance in EP II, cause there were a few R5s in EPI and we did not have them immortalized in plastic. I kept hoping that the Queen's Starship was going to have the yellow one with it.

Like my name implies, their could never be enough droids for me. Heres hoping the new year brings even more, like a 12" Two One Bee, maybe.

But does anyone know a tentative date for release of R4M9?

Droidlover, Sirsteve still has R5-D4 listed in the picture archive (http://www.myfigures.com/pa/index.html?domain_id=5&action=I&series_id=911).
but you can substitute R4-M9 for R5-D4. The release date in the picture archive is January 2002. It's a fairly safe bet that he'll be winging his way to us with Teebo and BoShek Jan/Feb. So not long to suffer eh? :)

Personally, I think it's a great addition... I'd heard the rumors but this took me totally by suprise. Besides, if they will do BoShek and R4-M9, surely there is a General Rieekan in our future. I don't know who's inspiring or approving the choice of characters made over at Hasbro - but I like what I'm seeing!!!

As for R4-M9's allegiance, I also am a bit confused. If you have the awesome book "Star Wars: The Action Figure Archive" (edited by Mr. Sansweet) look at page 37. There are two pictures of R4-M9 - one of which shows him on Hoth. The caption reads "R4-M9 was seen in the Blockade Runner and at Echo Base."

Hmm... sumpin' not right. Maybe he's a spy droid for the Empire.
