View Full Version : CONTEST - BEST "FASHION" MM/AF POST
SWAFMAN
08-09-2004, 11:51 AM
I'm sure that I'm overstepping my authority here, but I propose a contest.
VT's recent posting frenzy in the "mm fashion reports: denver (& your dateline?)" (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=356) thread, and my own recent score of a digicam, combined with the travelocity "roaming gnome" TV commercials, has given me an idea.
Let's have a contest for the best photo/digicam picture of your MM or AF item(s) in a cool location. Entries should be posted to the "mm fashion reports: denver (& your dateline?)" (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=356) thread.
Example: A picture of you holding your AF X-wing in your hand, while you're standing next to George Lucas.
That would probably be the hands-down contest winner, but you get the idea. Honestly, there are no guidelines for the setting of the picture. The pix can be taken anywhere, of anything, as long as there's MM or AF included in the frame, and it doesn't violate the SSG Forums rules for content of posts.
All you Photoshop or other sneaky graphics editing program users, PLEASE be honorable. Let's keep this real.
If you have an image that's too large to post here and you don't have access to another web page where you can upload the file and post a hyperlink to it in the "fashion" thread, PM me and I'll see if I can upload your pic to my own site, so a link to it can be posted.
If this idea takes off, I'll discuss possible prizes with {{THE POWERS THAT BE}}. Worst case, I'll find something you hopefully will consider nifty, and send it to you myself. If we get any posts (besides VT's ;) ), the contest will run from today through October 31st, 2004.
Well, what do you think? Let's get this forum jumping again!

SWAFFY, I like the idea. Sounds like a cool way to revitalize the forum lol
I assume your old pic HERE (http://r2toyforce.net/IMAGES/swafman2_af_10.jpg) is what you mean by NOT "real", right? :p

NOT "real"? Whaddaya mean?!? ;)
I'd forgotten about that one! Ah.... good times. :D
But yes, that's precisely what I mean.
I'd say you're at a terrific advantage in the contest, setting wise, if you're still living in paradise, R2.

swaf: "Entries should be posted to the 'fashreports' thread"
-oh? why not right here? after all that thred's purpose is to document the ephemeral, transitory Vibe of my cafe-sluMMin, while this thred already has the requisite competition emphasis :) (ok ok, the real reason i'm advocating this is cuz as i print up the fashthred i'd prefer my metronomically-rhythmed entries not be interrupted by sporadic contest vyings ;) )
shall i assume that, due either to my diahrrea-of-the-shutter prolificacy or my cam's lo-rez nature i'm not eligible? oh well, the prize'd prolly be some af toy i don't want anyway ;) shall i also assume your contest inspiration means you been enjoyin my daily reports?
"the travelocity 'roaming gnome' TV commercials"
-feh, trav stole that trope from Amelie (see it! (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showpost.php?p=315717&postcount=249))- and Amelie, i like to think, stole it from me; as jdah can attest, i've non-digital mm fashpix dating back to '99 at least so :p, jeunet & tautou
"Let's keep this real"
-or, you could specify "best real" and "best artifice" distinctions; after all, artifice is an inherent issue for "fashion" ;)
"Let's get this forum jumping again"
-whadyamean "again"? 2me it never Stopped hoppin :D

VT - I didn't mean to imply you weren't eligible. I only meant that if no one except you posts anything, it would be a pointless contest.
I'd like to keep this contest for "real" pix only. If we have a good response, maybe we can do a 2nd one for "hacked" pix?
re: "-oh? why not right here? after all that thred's purpose is to document the ephemeral, transitory Vibe of my cafe-sluMMin.."
Sorry to make it less convenient for you to print your posts. I guess I took the "...(& your dateline?)" portion literally.
I think having having others (hopefully...) interspersed with yours will be cool.
I guess you're just a victim of your own talent at giving threads apropos names ;)

So far, only r2dee2 and VT have even acknowledged this thread. Does that reflect a lack of enthusiasm for the contest idea itself, or MM/AF in general?

Hi SwafMan, I'm in. I will take an AF with me on holidays and take some pictures.

It sounds like a cool idea, but my camera situation is not so hot right now. Also, I'm kinda thrown by the lack of GSJ, he came back and disappeared again, so I feel weird. But I'll be glad to see (and comment upon ;)) any pics. :D
SWAFMAN

sicqnus - cool! :D Enjoy your holiday.
JT, I hope camera quality won't be too serious an issue. If needed, feel free to mail me prints for scanning & posting. Or maybe take delevoping option to get online prints? I echo your concern and wonder re: GSJ's status. If you're peeking, RLR, we wish you peace and comfort.
Okay everyone else, get on the bandwagon. Anyone who browses, but hasn't posted or joined yet, c'mon. Like that little troll in Poltergeist says, "All are welcome!"

1) Swaffy, bad pun, BAD PUN!!! ;)
2) I had forgotten how odd the landing gear on that AF look.
3) Very cool pics Sic, way too classy for this group. :D
4) Careful you don't land that cruiser in Paris, it might open up and have thousands of troops debark and march down the Champs Elysees. We've seen one stormtrooper-bearing army try it, don't want to tempt fate again. ;) :p

Swaffy, have seen this thread (obviously), my visits are infrequent now, and this is my first day here for 2 weeks.
Will try to get something to enter into this pixspar but have very few fabulous ideas.... I am going to Tuscany in Sept....perhaps a trip to Casserta is in order :)

I hope to take lots of pics in october. I will travel to Tracy Island (I mean Mauritius) in the Indian sea near Mahé Islands (Seychelles), La Réunion and Rodrigues Island. A real Scuba Diving paradise. Took a waterproof camera and two other good cams. One or two AFs will be in the bags.

Well, I haven't taken the pic I REALLY want to yet, but since time is running out, these are just a first attempt at the "fashion" MM. This is the MM Death Star set.
Deathstar I (http://r2toyforce.net/IMAGES/19oct2004dscn0767deathstarsunsetelipse_9tf.jpg)

If I make it to the top of our volcano, I'll still try to take the pic I really want to. Until then, these will have to do :nerv:

Just back from paradise... Great holidays !
I took a lot of pictures of sunsets, flowers, animals (monkeys, giant tortoes, fishes, insects - damn mosquitos ! -, lost dogs, mangustas, crocodiles, birds) ; the jungles were incredibles and the tropical parks amazing. I took the time to swim with dolphins and even had the opportunity to eat crocodile (crocodile meat have a chicken flavour). I also made a few pics with my travelling Acclamator. First part here. :D

After the Hindu temple in the jungle and the monkeys, my Action Fleet wants to do some Marlin & Sailfish fishing. Meeting at the Marina and taking a "Blue Marlin" beer just before boarding. Last shot made at the end of the day, when preparing the meat.

It's amazing how much those marina pictures look like they could have been taken at almost any southern waterfront in this country. I don't know what I was expecting, but somehow I would expect it to look more different.
Beautiful pics, siq!

I still haven't made it to the top of the volcano with my death star, but I wanted to add another "fashion" MM pic before the deadline:) You know us females, we want to "prettify" things up a bit, so here's the death star dolled up a bit :p lol

Re: sunset pics.......PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY sicqnus!!!!!....though you do have the same problem I have on my pictures, you need to rotate the horizontal horizon line a bit, elsewise the ocean seeps out of the picture :)
I've been posting my "non MM fashion" Maui pics in THIS (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/showthread.php?t=25622) thread.
Thanks for the aloha!! :D

sicqnus - awesome pics (AGAIN!). The first one you posted as a thumbnail in the last post reminds me of the "Azul" wallpaper in Microflacid Windows XP. ;)
everyone - the polls close (for the "fashion" pics contest) at midnight tonight in Hawaii, or whatever time zone is further west without crossing the International Date Line. Judging will begin tomorrow. I'm not sure I can be objective enough. As it stands now, I want everyone who posted to win. I may request that other foruMMers help with the judging.
Best luck and good wishes to everyone.

THX VT, seeing the MMs flying between the buildings is always a pleasure. After all these years I'm still convinced that they were of the greatest toys of the past ten years. Hasbro didn't have the same point of view, alas !
R2, sorry I wasn't able to spell Aloha correctly but thanks to you now I know ! You're right about the horizon on the sunset pics. It could easily be done with Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro but I was too lazy to make the correction.

I never considered posting a pic, since I was "sponsoring" the contest. Too bad, too, as I would've enjoyed coming up with something.
JT & LBC - would you two be willing to review the pix posts and PM me with your thoughts on a winning submission? I have reviewed the pix, but would like some other input on the judging.

-well then howzabout returning tha flavor?? how bout an ssd cruising the champs-elysees spacelane, or alighting on a montmartre cafe tabletop (w/maybe tautou happening to walk past in the background  ), or circling the tour eiffel? :D
"they were of the greatest toys of the past ten years"
-and i can adapt an art-world concept usually applied to minimalism and abstract expressionism to explain why: "Toy Formalism!" in brief, formalism theorizes that art is like other creations and processes (industrial products, communications, biological life) in that as time passes it evolves, i.e. it makes itself simpler and more efficient over succeeding generations, thus becoming a more pure version of itself. scifi mms were a quantum leap in this evolution: they stripped away as much bulk & expense as possible while still retaining an ideal degree of a ship design's essence and detail, until they became the purest possible representation of the very Concept of a toy spaceship

This was difficult. I'm not trying to be trite when I say that every picture deserves to win, but since I must select just one... this picture is the contest winner. (http://r2toyforce.net/IMAGES/19oct2004dscn0767deathstarsunsetelipse_9tf.jpg)
I have to say that the images from sicqnus of the Castle of Vincennes made this decision nearly impossible. The deciding factor ended up being perspective of the scale of the MM/AF object relative to its background. The picture I selected, in my opinion, looks the most like it could be real life-sized in its setting. In every other way, this contest is a draw.
VT deserves sincere acknowledgement, too, for being our most prolific and possibly most enthusiastic contributor. He was also the only one to post in the requested thread ;). With a higher resolution camera, I think a couple of VT's postings would've been in contention for top pick.
Thanks to everyone. Prizes will be announced shortly.

SWAFMAN and empanelled judges, I do not envy the situation you were in, to have to make a choice in this contest. You are indeed right sicqnus and VT did offer a great range of fashionable pictures. It was fun to see how each interpreted the "intent" of this endeavor:)
I'm pleased to hear you liked my picture and found it fit your criteria. Thank you:) !!
As far as posting in the wrong thread, I was under the impression that VT didn't WANT us in "his" thread!!:) Sorry I posted in the wrong place :ermm:
