What Battle Did They Win?

In the opening scroll of ANH it talks of the Rebels winning there first victory over the Empire. I'm not big on EU so could someone tell me what this victory was? Obviously the Rebels stole the datatapes during the course of the battle but I don't know anything else about it could someone fill me in.

Well, Lucas comments on the commentary that there was originally supposed to be a massive raid on the Imperial Shipyards where the plans were stolen. This was way to expensive to film though, so it's just explained in the opening crawl. The EU has made it somewhat different, involving Kyle Kataren and such. I don't recall the EU story of the plans being acquired that well, so someone else will have to help you there. :)

There were two parts to the Death Star plans (which is an explanation for why two different EU stories popped up). One portion was obtained by a mercenary with Rebel sympathies, Kyle Katarn (who later becomes a Jedi Knight), and the other was obtained by Han Solo's first girlfriend, Bria Tharen, who led a raid on a small Imperial outpost and transmitted the plans to the Tantive IV just before they were killed.

Who says Lucas invented corny coincidences? :p

I always thought the plans were intercepted during a transmission. Or was that something else?

If you obtain the radio drama, it has alot of that story on it.

Yes Kid, the plans were stolen and then transmitted just as Vader said.

JJB - that's right, I saw in the documentary footage of the casting footage where Leia was talking about the shipyard raids. :)
