View Full Version : Any chance of a DVD re-release for The Karate Kid trilogy ?

I love these movies, no matter how cheesy they may be ! :)

The first DVD releases were a disappointment, with the original film being fullscreen only (correct me if I'm wrong) with 2 and 3 coming widescreen.

I waited awhile on these, hoping for
a) a widescreen copy of the original
b) a nice little boxset
-- I'd even buy a 4 pack with "The Next" aka part 4 if it got me the first 3

Anyway, they are now out of print and I'm wondering if any of the DVD website hounds 'round here have seen any announcements or rumors of late ?

I've not read anything about those films receiving any sort of new release.

I'll be damned. The DVD database comes through again.

But they're not going to include the film with the female kid? An outrage for sure! ;)

Most fans consider the 4th film an outrage. So no suprise if it's left out. That or the small ammount of info that's out there isn't totally accurate. We'll see. :)

Full House and the Karate Kid Caesar?????? Did you get stuck in the 80's?

11-21-2004, 02:28 AM
Oh Binks, you just made me so happy ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! :) :) :)

Even better news now that I watched a set of:
The Karate Kid full frame previously viewed
Karate Kid II factory sealed widescreen
Karate Kid III factory sealed widescreen
just go for 97 dollars on eBay. :D

Binks, I'm a hardcore TKK fan and I can't say I consider 4 an outrage but that's only because I've never seen the whole movie, at least not that I can remember. However, I remember not liking the idea of doing a 4th from the get-go. Then again, some other fans hated 3 and thought THAT one should have never been made, either. :crazed:

Myself, I loved part 3 even though it's the weakest of the series. Martin Kove as Kreese was a real pleasure to have back full time and I can't say enough about Thomas Ian Griffith as Terry Silver.

KH, what can I say, I love these movies. Full House was more of a joke to me than anything but as a kid I seriously loved TKK 1-3 and I still remember going to see part 3 in the theater way back in 1989 when I was around 11.

I'm just bustin yo chops Cae. I like the first one, even though it is cheesy, the second was ok, the 3rd was over the top(theres an 80's reference) :beard:

You wanna talk about Over the Top ? :) That's been on my DVD wish list for YEARS. :(

Oddly enough the digital bits has a bit of news on this set today. Apparently the set will include the fourth film! Karate Kid fans can now rejoice!

Except those of us who only want the first two films! :p

No matter how pathetic the music of Stan Bush may sound in retrospect, it seems he only contributed songs to great cult classic movies.

Come on Chux, 3 isn't THAT bad.

Hell yeah, I saw the news at The Bits as well and I'm pretty excited about it.

Think I'll hop on my "Myagi Turbo" and go for a spin. :D :D :D

DavisDVD had some more news on the set. From the front of the package I'm thinking that Karate Kid III and The Next Karate Kid will be on the same disc. Which isn't that big of a deal, as it didn't hurt the Friday the 13th movies at all. I assume there will be little to no features on 3 and 4. Hopefully the second film will get some attention in the set. :)

Boxed Set Collections

Sony Home Entertainment will release a couple of three-disc boxed sets on February 1st. Look for the Look Who's Talking DVD Collection and The Karate Kid Collection, each featuring the films in their respective series. Of interest however is the latter collection which includes a brand new special edition of the first Karate Kid (and only available in the set). This disc will feature a new commentary track (with director John Avildsen, writer Robert Kamen and stars Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), "The Way Of The Karate Kid": making-of documentary, the "Life Of Bonsai" featurette, "Beyond the Form" feature with karate trainer Pat Johnson and "East Meets West: A Composer's Notebook with Bill Conti." No word yet if it also will come with a new anamorphic transfer. Retail is $39.95 and $44.95. Cover art for both is now up.

Okay, this is coming out Tuesday, and I must ask WTF is going on here???

From every indication, it looks like 2-4 will be in widescreen, but #1 (the most important one) is only going to be in fullscreen?

They did a SE version with all these new special features and couldn't just give us widescreen?

Sounds like they all have the WS treatment.

Where'd you read otherwise, Chux?

Just about every retailer has the specs only listing 1:33:1 for Karate Kid, which I was hoping was an error or omission. I looked for a review to set my mind at ease, and didn't see one. I figured if I commented on it here, someone would quickly alleviate or confirm my worst fears. :D

Chux, that's probably just old news from the first DVD release of part 1 which was in FS . . .

I'm so pumped up to get this set, I'm all over it on Tuesday ! ! ! :Ogre:

Haha ! Great link there Jaymz, I like how the reviewer likens KK3 to ROTJ. :p

Looks like JJB was right about 3 and 4 sharing a disc. Even worse, it's a Flipper. Cheap.

I saw Karate Kid pt 2 in the discount bin at WM. What was up with that. A pak must have gotten damaged and they threw it in there.:D

I had no idea this was even out until I stumbled onto a review the other day! I was just thinking last year that the 20th anniversary of Prt 1 was coming up. I was glad to see that the set was not bare bones, like the older releases. It may not be the super duper edition I wanted, but I'll take it. I am an unabashed KK fan. Even part 3!

I watched the whole set within a 2 day period. What a fun time !

Part 1 is of course a masterpiece, part 2 is a VERY good sequel, part 3 is weak but not terrible, and part 4 is . . . not likely to be watched by me ever again. ;)

The extras on part 1 are pretty good. Nice stash of featurettes on there. I would have liked some interviews for part 2 as well, especially with the actors who played Kumiko, Chozen, and Sato.

How great was it to see Martin Kove in the interviews ? :D
