It seems the new Bounty Hunters series is going to be released together with Bonus Vader.

Just a quick post for now...

Steve's put a lot of great pics from the Koto CIV booth in the Photo Gallery, and I just added my pics from Saturdays panel discussion.

http://photos.sirstevesguide.com/showgallery.php?cat=5322

I love what Koto does (it always looks great), but some of this new stuff like the Bounty Hunters, and the X-wing "cross-sections" kit(s), are going to be amazing!!!

Cool! Can't wait to get the Koto Royal Guard. As for Bounty Hunters I'll pass for sure (maybe I'll buy IG-88, I love droids of any kind) but I want the new Darth Vader:yes:

but I want the new Darth Vader:yes:I think the idea is that you'll have to buy each of the bounty hunters in order to get the parts to build Vader. Sort of a "build-a-figure" idea, with the difference being that you'll have a few choices for the right hand.

I've not noticed Koto much in the past, their Slave Leia prototype caught my eye and the droids looked amazing, but I'm a cheap collector and their product is just outside of my comfort zone (though their stuff was like $50 at CIV at all the dealer booths, which didn't sit well with some folks). Anyway, Koto blew me away at this con, they didn't have a big booth but everything they had looked stunning, seeing it in person and out of the box makes all the difference. Plus, they're vinyl which sits well with me since I'm too afraid of breaking GG statues and busts.

Koto's armored figures looked outstanding, of all the armored figures from the licensees, Kotos were the ones that had the right look, the right visual depth, they looked "real". The convention exclusive Yoda was also quite amazing, the light up effect really came off nicely and I wished I had another $60 every time I saw it.

Steve and I disagreed on which Grievous was better, Sideshow's Premium Format or Koto's ARTFX, and while they're both nice I'm confident that I'm the one who is right on this matter. Koto's Grievous is likely to be my first purchase of their line.

The second will be that 3-D Cross Sections X-wing, holy crap that thing is cool, and Fine Molds in on the venture makes it only better because they're the masters of model design for vehicles!

I posted this write-up of Koto's booth info on Friday:
http://www.sirstevesguide.com/index.php?categoryid=37&p2_articleid=868

And I posted this article on their panel which explains a few of the concepts a little more: http://www.sirstevesguide.com/index.php?categoryid=37&p2_articleid=882

http://photos.sirstevesguide.com/showgallery.php?cat=5322Dude, you totally saved our bacon on that one! I didn't even know you were shooting pictures of the panel, I thought Steve said JOHN was there and when he wasn't, I panicked. Then I lost my recording of the panel and had to write down notes whenever I'd remember them, and your pics jogged the rest back to me - my panel story would have been so thin without seeing your pics.

I know that. But I want that Vader without the Bounty Hunters. I'll have to find a way to get it...It'll be tough, Vader's parts are spread throughout all 6 bounty hunters and when he's complete, he has 2 alternate right hands, so finding someone willing to trade that away may not be your best bet.

Hey, is this Koto Vader from the Bounty Hunters the first BAF in Star Wars collecting?

Hey, is this Koto Vader from the Bounty Hunters the first BAF in Star Wars collecting?

I believe it is.

I've not noticed Koto much in the past...

Koto's armored figures looked outstanding, of all the armored figures from the licensees, Kotos were the ones that had the right look, the right visual depth, they looked "real".

Now you know! In fact, that is exactly what got me! During my trip to Japan in 2004, I spotted the Boba Fett and Luke/Stormtrooper. I bought them on the spot, seeing these in person is what sold me. Besides, seeing as how I was already in Japan, the cost was slightly cheaper. I ended up buying a Darth Vader and Darth Maul before I left.

That's where it started. Since then I have been collecting Koto's. I have had to really limit and focus my collection. I try to stick to OT only for one thing. Next my top priority is the armored figures, as you mentioned, they really do look the best.

I was really under a crunch when Koto released three variant Sandtroopers, but I managed to get all three from shop.starwars.com and I was VERY happy with all three.:D

I also have the Scout Trooper and Yoda. I still need the Snowtrooper. When it was released I was about to move, and things have been crazy since, so I still haven't got it yet.

Anyway, Koto's rock and I hope to get all of the Bounty Hunters...probably when I get back from this deployment...I should have more than enough money saved when I return to the States.

Dude, you totally saved our bacon on that one! I didn't even know you were shooting pictures of the panel, I thought Steve said JOHN was there and when he wasn't, I panicked. No problem. They'd moved my line around to that side of the building, and it was a short walk up the stairs.

I've been a fan of their stuff for a while, but don't own any of it (aside from a few small candy toys and other little models), though seriously, I've come close many times. (Really want the 3PO & R2 set.) It's always been a money issue, and I haven't had decent display room. I'll be making room for that X-wing set though... that thing is going to be amazing.

I still need the Snowtrooper. When it was released I was about to move, and things have been crazy since, so I still haven't got it yet.Hey, one thing they mentioned (and I don't know if you put this in your report JT), is that they'll be reissuing all of their older figures to save us from "having to pay eBay prices." There's something a "model" company will do that others won't. :)

Yeah, Koto's been doing this for a while. I remember the Stormtrooper/Luke came out years ago and I'm pretty sure it's still in production.

The flip side is that, if you are a "completist" here in the States, you're in trouble. You see their "exclusives" or "limited edition" stuff is only released in Japan! So the rare stuff can be pretty expensive, and even hard to find on eBay.

Thankfully, I am not that much of a fanatic with the Koto stuff, besides it's mostly simple stuff, like re-paints, colored Clonetroopers, that sort of thing.

I think the new Yoda is probably their first non-Japan exclusive.

I ended up buying a Darth Vader and Darth Maul before I left. The thing is, it's a quality I don't think really comes through in photos, you have to see it in person to get it.

Did you have to pay export duties on them?

JediTricks
07-13-2007, 10:21 PM
I can understand why folks might want a Royal Guard statue to be in a static pose, it's movie-realistic, but at the same time it's an incredibly boring figure to do that way because it's all robes - so I doubt most folks would actually buy it.

Ep 3 Obi-Wan is already out. Grievous is due some time in Nov or Dec.

sergiurusu

I've never bought a Kotobukiya before, but I always wanted Hasbro to do a 7" Unleashed Royal Guard - which was never to be.

But as a Kir Kanos fan, I want this one and might buy my first Kotobukiya with the Royal Guard.

I don't intend to collect Kotobukiya, but I'll make an exception for the Royal Guard who's Kir Kanos in my mind!

Nice get on the McQuarrie set! They were selling it at SDCC as well, yet I heard some folks say "I wish I could buy that" not realizing they could. The box is mighty impressive but the figures inside blow me away.

They brought a lot of that stuff to SDCC, I wish I had more time to look over the cross-sections X-wing, that's one of the many things I didn't put enough time into at the show. Strangely, they didn't have the painted Imp Royal Guard with them, they had a gray proto. I seem to remember they did bring a proto of the Senate Guard version though, some of the same body but new head and hands holding the rifle instead of a force pike.

JediTricks
11-15-2007, 02:56 PM
There's an ESB and ROTJ helmet? I hadn't heard of this before. That's pretty OCD though.

EDIT: Ok, I did a little research, the difference is mainly a couple color elements and the amount of "flare" the shape has, though the latter has been attributed to poor BTS molding technique leading to a slightly smaller shape. And yeah, this is the ESB helmet, but it looks way better than the crummy ROTJ one (which also is visually less interesting with its red stripes over the yellow ESB ones).

These are going to be awesome and I wish I had 600 bucks to set aside for them, and of course a place in the house to showcase them (They would need a large area if put all together).

11-16-2007, 01:53 PM
He's on his tippy-toe, but the actual statue wouldn't continue to stand if it didn't have support.

sergiurusu
11-17-2007, 03:18 AM
I agree, he could easily lean. There are 2 options: a metal rod through his leg or a second support besides his leg.

JediTricks
11-17-2007, 03:40 AM
I suspect the footprint is SO small there that even a metal rod might not be enough on its own, it'd have to be welded to a metal baseplate. This solution increases the amount of surface area, so that's good.

sergiurusu
11-17-2007, 04:00 AM

That TIE Pilot looks awesome as well. But I wonder about that blaster. I mean, would a pilot really be carrying around something that bulky? I always imagined them having a more compact pistol, similar to the Biker Scouts.

I know that every TIE Pilot action figure we've gotten since 1996 has had that blaster included, but I always thought that was just because Hasbro was lazy.

sergiurusu
02-02-2008, 01:47 AM
He might have got the blaster from a rack on Death Star/Star Destroyer (or wherever he may be), or maybe his TIE Fighter had an E-11 blaster

bigbarada
02-02-2008, 03:31 AM
The only reason a pilot would need a firearm would be in the case of a crash landing. However, since TIE Fighters explode if the Pilots sneeze too hard then I don't think they were ever intended to survive any sort of unscheduled landing.

So, yeah, borrowed from a weapons rack on the Death Star to.... do what exactly?

Anyways, it looks cool, so this might be the second Kotobukiya that I buy.

I just realized, shouldn't this thread be moved to the new section Gentle Giant/Kotobukiya/Sideshow (http://forums.sirstevesguide.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=272)?

Yeah... I suppose. :) Which is funny, because that section didn't really include Koto back when this thread was started.

It was moved, cool! I know this section didn't include Kotos originally but better here.

This section didn't exist at all up until a few weeks ago, there was a section that covered Koto but we broke it up when it was too over-reaching, that was a few years ago, and now Steve goes and semi-remakes it anyway. :D

That is awesome. That is the one Kotobukiya that I continually give serious thought to trying to buy.

Are those totally sold-out now? How are they marketed / distributed?

What are the ways in which one gets them?

Check out the online stores, I'm sure it is still out there for sale

Looks great, I like how it's all robe from one side while the other has more action and undersuit.

Tycho
07-15-2008, 02:57 AM
I think it's interesting how the undersuit is probably similar to the movie extra's costumes versus the Kir Kanos armor.

We don't know what they "really" wore in the movies, but the EU has basically implied it was always red stormtrooper armor. But that is the EU. I DO like that idea though: cross-draw holsters, like Jango Fett, and expanding double-blade rapier weapons, in addition to the electropoles you see them with in the movie.

Royal Guards are cool.

Eeee!!! I so very much want this! It looks perfect!

It's preordering through one of the Japanese importers for $300, but that's the blind-box case, not the US distribution which will be totally different which I'm hoping will be cheaper, but not counting on that.

Did anyone end up getting one of these kotobukiya X-wings? I just won one on E-bay for $104 plus shipping. I can't wait till it comes in.

$104? Yikes, that's a fantastic price. I didn't end up getting this, but I am going to try to in the build-up to Comic-Con. Please let us know what you think when it arrives.

I have all 3 Kotobukiya Sandtroopers and they are awesome indeed. Much better than the colored clones, since the Sandies come with different poses and weapons. The Sergeant and Corporal are quite rare at this moment, haven't seen them on ebay from some time. My 3 Sandtroopers (http://entertainment.webshots.com/album/561382762FWbFqs?start=72)

Nice shots. Too bad Koto can't break into the US market better, ditch the focus on "vinyl", and lower the price a bit. The pose on that Snowtrooper is a clear indication that they are a true realization of what Hasbro was hoping to be with the Unleashed line. I haven't seen an armored or alien Koto SW piece in the past few years which hasn't looked perfect.

Yeah, but that figure is from 4 years ago, which is why I said "in the past few years". Their earliest works had issues, odd sculpts and poses, but since at least '07 they've been firing on all thrusters. (Minus their human likenesses, sorry Koto but this is one area that you still haven't gotten totally nailed, either from sculpt or deco, but we love ya anyway.)

I never bought the stormie for that reason...the pose was???!! I love the posing of the biker scout & Ep. II clonetrooper, also...very different. I have two of the three sandtroopers(never bought the white pauldron version...he is rare, indeed. The Ep. III Vader is still one of my favorite Dark Lord poses in any format.

I also like the ROTS Vader a lot. You could display ROTS Vader as attacking ROTJ Vader :D The C-3PO and R2-D2 set is also among my favorites. Not sure about McQuarrie set, since it is still boxed, hopefully later this year after moving to the new house, I'll be able to display all my statues and figures.

I figured that would end up being the case, I pre-ordered mine before they hit and got all 3 for a good price. I'm glad I did!

I bought the Luke/Stormtrooper, Darth Vader (1st), and Boba Fett back in late 2004, while I was in Japan. Fett is also one of my favorites. I plan on picking up the Snowtrooper, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I also found the McQuarrie Vader/Luke for a really good price last year. They are at my mother-in-laws house right now, waiting to be shipped.:D

I put together the X-wing set last night and love it. I don't think it will be as easy to take apart and display the "innards" as I was led to believe by the advertising, but with a little patience and care I'm sure it can be done. The detail is, of course, amazing. Everything fits tightly together. The paint job is above reproach. As for the packaging, it's way over done. They killed 3 trees and probably used 5 gallons of oil to make all the cardboard and plastic in it.

I'll post some pictures when I get around to it. I don't think I'd pay over $200 for this, but if you can find one at a price you can afford, you won't be disappointed.

It wasn't difficult to open, it was just overdone. I'm sure it was done that way to help justify the pricepoint. It looks fantastic, the art on the boxes is really well done, but in the end all I care about is the model not what it comes in. Every piece could easily be examined from all sides without taking it out of the package. I think it could have been done much more efficiently without any risk of the pieces rubbing together and messing up the fantastic paint job.

There is an outer box that holds the 6 individual boxed kits. It's nice and has a convenient (and completely unnecessary) handle to carry it with. Inside the well decorated outer box are the 6 individual kits which have everything spaced out in plastic trays with plastic wrap around many bigger pieces and others in baggies. The plastic trays have another plastic tray over the top of them so you can't scratch the pieces removing them from the box. It's probably over 90% dead-space. On the upside, short of it being run over by a truck, I don't see any way to damage the kit before you get it home.

As for the total size, the footprint of the whole display is probably 16"*16" give or take an inch or two. I have it in an entertainment center I built a few years ago and it takes up the better part of the shelf.

Cool. I saw the assembled model at Comic-Con last year, but their display doesn't give a real world feel to it, it seems so ethereally cool that I couldn't fit it into my mental view of my collection.
