Will Eisner, one of the greatest comic-book legends of all time, has passed away at the age of 87.

Eisner was not only one of the greatest storytellers the medium of comics has ever known, but he was the first to publish a serious book about comics as a legitimate art form. (Comics & Sequential Art pre-dated Scott McCloud's work by more than a decade, and still belongs on everyone's bookshelf, fan or not.) He was so respected among the comics community that the annual awards at the ComicCon are named for him.

This is truly a sad day for art and pop culture in general, and an especially sad day for comics.

RIP, Mr Eisner. And say hello to King Kirby when you get to the Pearly Gates.

He's a legend and most people don't even know who he was.
He'll be missed.
