Well, tomorrow after having been on the job market for nearly two and a half years, I officially reenter the workforce - with Pixar animation no less! I actually lost my last real regular job at the beginning of 2002 and have been working off and on as a painter whenever the work was there - more in the summertime, not so much during the winter months. My lack of a degree has made it very difficult for me to find decent work in my preferred field; when the economy was better degrees hadn't been necessary.
I recently got a hand up from my buddy who's worked for Pixar for several years now. Apparently positions there are very hard to come by (at one point, I used to fax my resume there daily), and those who have them hardly ever vacate them to make room for new folks! As of tomorrow I start my new job as a monitor calibrations specialist! Granted, it's not anything major and it's not going to make me rich, but it's a start and it's helped me get my foot in the door. I should also mention that I've been hired on an "as needed" basis, meaning I will work full-time for extended periods until the work is completed and be brought back on whenever the work comes back. Still, I'm extremely happy about my turn of luck, and it has been mentioned (God willing!) that a permanent, steady position may well happen (seems my resume made a bit of an impression once it finally got read there). I've already been told that I may be introduced to several of the other department heads with the intention of placing me in something more permanent when it comes up.
Either way, the place is just awesome - it looks like Disneyland in there, the work is steadier than it has been for me as a painter, the pay is decent, and it's an awesome opportunity! Should look great on my resume.

Before anyone asks, even though I haven't yet signed the obligatory non-disclosure contracts, no, I cannot give up any secrets. No way I'd ever do anything to jeopardize this. :p Wish me luck!

Also, there are a couple fellow forumites - Kool-Aid Killer and Jargo - to whom I owe stuff as trades. Again, sorry for the wait guys. Now that I'm making decent money and will have a steady paycheck again your stuff is coming very shortly, I swear! Thanks for being so patient through my lean period!

Right on bro. You don't need no stinking degree. It goes to show you it's not what you know, it's who you know, you know.:p What so great it something you like to do.

awesome, roojay... now you can wear hawai'ian shirts to work every day of the week!

i keep telling my friend max to try to get a job there, as he's a loud-shirt wearer and an apple technician. that would be sweet!

Congrats man, good to hear a positive story about someone's job situation...

And if you can, could you mention how we don't need any films featuring wise-cracking animated cars, plants, luggage, or foodstuffs of any kind ;)??? I mean, Bruce Willis still needs work, but there's only so far one can "push" that guy

But good on ya man, for real :beard:

Very cool RooJay, sounds like a fun place to work. Hopefully getting your foot in the door will indeed translate to bigger and better things.

Make them scrap "Cars" all together. It looks like poo.

Yeah, I second that. That stupid tow truck in the trailer keeps haunting my dreams!

But seriously, RJ-congrats! What a great place to work! :)

Hey everybody! Thanks for all of your encouraging words, and sorry it's taken me so long to come back - things as one could imagine have been pretty hectic as of late! Everything's going really well so far and I'm hopeful that they'll only get better. I've had lots of fun so far, learned lots of cool stuff (including lots of awesome secret stuff that I'm bound by contract not to discuss ;) ) and met a lot of really cool people. Cars, what I've been able to see of it, is absolutely gorgeous and I'm liking it more and more with every new bit I see. I can also tell you that their follow-up is looking like their most beautiful project to date, and that the subject matter (which will certainly not be confirmed by me for fear of losing my cool new job) seems like it'll lend itself to all kinds of good stuff! Thanks again to all my well-wishers!
