Dude! This ship is so cool it needs a thread of its own.

I think this is one of the highlights of April 2nd out of all the stuff we bought and Hasbro has outdone themselves with a sweet Clone Fighter here.

For those of us who bought it - we have to have a thread to discuss it!

Yes it does, Ive only bought 1 but im geting 2 more and 2 gunships.

I love the handle. You can be siting there and then you have that suden urge to atack your cat with it and BAM big killer ship in your grasps ROFL.

The only minus is that i need more R4-G9's and pilots. These are going to be incredably hard for me to find because I couldnt go to MM or Any stores in the morn because of my sick grandma :/

To finish my fleet I still need

ARC STUFF:
2x ARC's
3x R4G9's
9x Pilots

My army:
18x regular clones
10x commanders
4x pilots
4x backeracks clones (i know thats not right)
4x ATTE tank gunner
4xBarcs
2x ATRT's
2x Gunships
10x clone 3 packs
All jedi

See this is what I get for not going to MM :)

Sorta shows you how lame the Naboo N-1 is. I haven't bought a prequel vehicle since episode I, but ARC-170 shall definitely be mine, eventually.

I have this vehicle opened. All I can say is AWESOME. Now all I need are some pilots and a droid.

Tycho

It's very big. That's giving me pause for concern:

I like my "hang-em up fleet battles" to not totally surpass one another. The ARC 170 (and I bought 3 - which is possibly a mistake) outshines most toys:

TPM:

3 N-1 Fighters, with a 4th (Anakin's) sidewinding into the fray

vs.

5 sets of Trade Federation Droid Fighter teams (15 fighters total!)

------------------------------------------------------------------

AOTC: n/a (ground and surface battle for Geonosis)

------------------------------------------------------------------

ANH:

1 Luke Skywalker X-wing

pursued by

2 TIE Fighters on either side of 1 Darth Vader TIE Fighter

(in my opinoion, it decreases the drama if you give Luke back his wingmates (Biggs and Wedge), so I opted not to display it that way on purpose).

--------------------------------------------------------------------

ESB:

Millennium Falcon

Escorted by

3 Twin Pod Cloud Cars (one day... I'm holding out for Hasbro for 2 more years before I buy the vintage).

I could have done the Falcon pursued by 4 TIE Fighters and made astreroids to hang from paper mache. This does tempt me now and then, but my Cloud City display wouldn't be complete without the Falcon.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

SOTE:

Millennium Falcon escaping Coruscant

escorted by Wedge's X-wing

Dash Rendar's Outrider

dodging Vintage Rebel Transport in space lanes

Pursuing

Boba Fett's Slave-One

Which is also being monitored by (vintage) Darth Vader's TIE Fighter

I took some liberties in recreating this scene slightly out of context (Slave-One did not go to Coruscant that we know of during Shadows of the Empire).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Return of the Jedi

2 X-wings
1 Y-wing
1 B-wing
1 A-wing

versus

2 TIE Interceptors
4 TIE Fighters

The (space) Battle of Endor is supposed to be the grand finale. I could add a vintage Rebel Transport, another Falcon, or more ships if I'm inclined to buy them (don't have them currently), but isn't simple supposed to be sweet?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTS:

3 ARC 170's (that are pretty big!)
1 Anakin Starfighter
1 Obi-Wan Starfighter

vs.

1 Droid Tri-Fighters
5 vulture droid fighters (when they are released)
pursued by 2 more Droid Tri-Fighters

CONCERN: with essentially 3 huge "flying fortresses" with the ARC 170's, does it make the Confederacy stuff look like it's no threat at all? Our heroes are supposed to be in danger, not winning by superior firepower.

I've only opened 1 ARC Fighter. Should I take 2 back?

Should I buy 2 more Droid Tri-Fighters to make things more desperate? (financially as well as in my display ;) )

Should this scene even come close to surpassing the importance of the one in ROTJ? They were trying to destroy a Death Star then.

The ARC 170's main display problem is it's too powerful. What are your thoughts about bringing balance to this Force?

JON9000

I haven't seen any ARC fighters left. I suggest you sell it on ebay or trade it here in case anyone needs one before returning it. :)

Tycho
04-02-2005, 09:02 PM
Right now I'm at the point where I'm thinking "who cares how much it'll outshadow the OT, I'll buy 2 more Tri-Droid Fighters (for a total of 5) and fill in the space with the vulcher fighters and make the whole display as awesome as possible.

I may be able to get a clearanced Falcon from a local retailer, pick up an OTC Lando that I never got before, and augment my ROTJ display to make it better. Perhaps a Rebel Transport will come up again.

Meanwhile, on Amazon or wherever, I can still get more TIE Fighters...

Why do I think bigger is better?

I just found a way to spend another $115 or more (mostly on old stuff I could have bought last summer!.... :crazed:

It is very nice. I did not find this at Wal Marts. I only seen these at Targets. It is big like the the Power F/X X-Wing that came out in 1997.

This thing is the Spruce Goose of toy SW ships. I was floored by the size of the box. There's no subtle way to walk past a group of attractive women with this thing under your arm, Lord knows I tried.

It's, IMO, the best value in the ROTS line. $30? Considering that the Smaller ships are $20 it's a steal. The Gunship is retailing for $30 too, which I believe is cheaper than either AOTC or CW (I seem to remember $39.99 for AOTC, but I could be wrong). I just don't care for the new paint app on this new one, so I skipped (Though it's sold out already a couple of places).

The ARC-170 is quite possible the coolest starfighter ever designed for a Star Wars movie. It's made even cooler by the fact that it resembles the X-Wing and is used by the Republic/Empire in ROTS.

This just makes it all the more obvious that the galaxy plunges into civil war after the Clone Wars because the Jedi Starfighters resemble the TIE Fighters and the ARCs resemble the X-Wings.

I have to get in on this thread too. I was unable to find the ARC at any Walmarts on Friday night/Saturday morning, but when I hit Target early there were 3 on the shelf. I grabbed it up immediately.
This thing is so sleek and cool its not even funny. I think it is worth every penny I paid for it, and then some. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite ships, and I am even considering getting another one, which is something I have NEVER done with ships and vehicles.

Turbowars
04-03-2005, 01:34 PM
Yes it is the best toy of the ROTS release. I saw 4 at one of the Targets yesterday morning. I wanted 2, but was hunting with 3 other friends so we each got one. it was the 1st thing I opened. On complaint though, it needs some battle damage.

Awesome ship Hasbro!!!

Dude they were all over the place a few day before MM. I saw a few at MM as well. These Astro are the best at this point and I don't really see any room for improvement. I bought a few extra that I'm customizing. Do some calling around and have the stores hold them for you. One thing though, just us any Atro, I'm sure in the movie they have all different color droid in the 170.

Dude! This ship is so cool it needs a thread of its own.

I've only seen the size of the box in person, not the actual fighter but yes I believe it does. Most certainly could whoop the Gunship AND the AOTC Slave 1 eh? ;)

Don't really like the look when the 6 wings are all out, it seems kinda of obsessive for a space fighter. But with the regular wings this thing looks like a Z-95, E-Wing and WWII Flying Fortress hybrid.

The Gunship is retailing for $30 too, which I believe is cheaper than either AOTC or CW (I seem to remember $39.99 for AOTC, but I could be wrong). The Saga version was $40, but the CW repaint was $30.

I haven't found an ARC-170 yet, I already have the Lego one though and it has a really large wingspan. I don't like it as much as the X-wing, the guns on the ARC especially seem too toyetic - massive and in just 1 location - and the S-foils don't make as much "sense" as on the X-wing or B-wing, but it is a cool ship none the less. I haven't seen the pilot fig yet either.

Question, how well does R4-G9 fit in the droid slot with those plastic wires on his feet?

Turbowars

That's cool Turbo, finally something cool to do with the AOTC R3-T7 droid.

I hope Wal-Mart gets in some ARCs as I would like to put one (maybe even two) in layaway if possible.

This ship is the bomb! Definitely the best prequel ship Hasbro has made yet IMO. The only thing that could be better would be a Dropship w/AT-TE, or maybe a Sith Infiltrator (if done properly).

Now if only I could find some clone pilots to stick in this bad boy. Hopefully Hasbro will realize the demand for this figure and increase his case ratio eventually..... I only bought 1 each of the Gunship and ARC-170, so now I need 5 pilots to fill the seats (and I would like to have one standing up in the gunship too).

MaquisWarrior
04-04-2005, 02:15 AM
Being a Maqui I find that to fight the Federation your Star Wars vehicles, weapons work nicely. Kirk, Spock, and Mc Coy love their ARC-170 (meaning they fit) and the Klingons enjoy the Gunship ("RAK-TAR KNOPF!!"). Many of my custom Warriors and Jedi look suspiciously like GI Joe, and any 3 to 5 inch figures if you look closely. I became this way after I saw Hasbro(Kenner) Abandon us former hard core Wars fans and give only a small crappy assortment of figures you need for nearly 20 years that this hobby has been around.
So you need 5 pilots to fill the seats may I make a suggestion yell out :"YO JOE!"
Go to the hobby shop buy paint.

Perfect, the opening is really big. I have tried all the Astros and it's all good.
Good to know, thanks. I'm assuming the fig doesn't rattle around or fall out even though the socket is large, otherwise SOMEONE would have mentioned it by now.

Basker, this sounds like a good use of the Star Tours R4-D2 and POTJ R4-M9 figs as well.

Matt, I think Steve changed Registered users' usernames to blue but not the ones affiliated with Sith or Jedi usergroups. I'll remind him tomorrow as your username looks decent and the green names looks like puke on that light red.

MW, I can't see Spock & McCoy happy to be in some relatively-tiny fighter like this compared to their roomy starships and even shuttlecraft. Kirk might be so overly-macho that he's into though. ;) Which Kirk & co fit in an ARC-170 though? The Playmates figs are 4.5" tall, the AA figs are 6" tall, and Galoob only made 3" tall TNG figs.

lol If that's good enough for you, then have at it. :D You'll definitely fill your seats a lot faster, that's for sure.

For me though, I want the real deal in my Star Wars ships. They need to look like the actual pilots in the movie, and it would take some serious skills to pull off customs like that! :smoker:

well the slot is better to have than not have, but I agree the r2 unit sticks out to far, and no it is not securly fit in. If you are a kid and turn this thing upside down, well... out goes the droid. I could design a proper droid slot, I don't know why Hasbro can't. Oh well I still love this ship, it is way cool
Remember the moldy crow...Kyle Katarns ship? Didn't the front resemble arc's?
Also one more complaint..The canopies..well the front one. For kids this will be broken with in a week. I can see the future of ebay right now...arc 170 good condition...missing canopy and rear gun ....
oh the rear gun looks hokey...like an after thought. It should have been a twin barrel gun, with shorter barrels, and more detail...
again a good ship though They just need to make pilot army bulder pack from somewhere.

It's been a long time since I've looked at the Moldy Crow but if I remember correctly it had very very light downward angle, nothing near the angle that the ARC has though. The Raven's Claw (Jedi Outcast) had a more beak-ish front though.

It does seem a bit too retro to WWII machine guns that were on planes such as the Flying Fortress, Lucas does take alot from Military designs.

Actually it does rattle and fall out. I was playing with it last night (thaaat's right) and I did a roll with it and R2 went for a spacewalk.

And Tycho, If it were me, I'd wait to see the movie to decide if the ARC 170 display should be bigger than Jedi's. To me it all depends on how important a role the ship plays in the movie. If it's only in there for a few seconds you may not end up wanting a huge display. Even tho it is one of the best ships ever...

It makes me think of a WWII bomber. And 4 figures in one fighter is too cool IMO.

Scackmgack
04-04-2005, 11:52 AM
Jesus, Tycho, how big is your house? I'm thinking that someday I am going to need a finished basement to set my collection up in old-school, homemade dioramas, and I don't have nearly as many doubles as you do!

Then again, I am less into the dioramas than just having stuff out on display.

This is my favorite toy of the line so far, though I am really dissapointed with the lack of Clone Pilots around Boston. I didn't see a single one over the weekend, and I got to all the stores as they opened. Either the Clone Pilots are in Collection 3 and we didn't receive any boxes of Collection 3 figures or the stores are waiting for the pegs to empty a little before bringing them out.

I've got Ep II clone pilots in my ARC-170 now, and it looks pretty rad that way. This is what I missed from the Ep II and Clone Wars collections - having a clone starfighter.

To me, no clone army meant anything until after we had at least one starfighter-class ship, so now I finally feel like I have a clone squad as they have some real air cover (no disrespect to the Gunship intended).

You can really see the influence of WW II design on the ARC-170. Considering Lucas took his dogfight sequences from old war footage, I think the design of the ARC-170 makes some sense, with the rear turret and all. The Clone Wars are like our World War, so I see the logic in the Republic designing a starfighter that can take a real beating.

Question, though - WHY are the main guns so friggin' HUGE? They must be insanely-powerful, though. I will look forward to reading some real technical specs on this thing.

Great toy. Best opening weekend find by far. Cannot wait to get some pilots. :)

My friend didn't pick up the ARC Fighter yet. I'll see if I can test set it up with 3 and sell him 1 or 2 loolse if it gets ridiculously huge.

One thing. How hard would it have been for them to put pegs in the droid slot to hold the droid in??? All the holes on the droids are in the same spot anyways. Come on HASBRO, my 5 year old could have thought to do that.

Clonetrooper1131

The ARC Fighter is SWEEET!!! I was a little disapointed that I didn't get one on MM, but went back the next day and found that TRU had them fully stocked.

I have yet to see them at the local Walmarts and Targets.

Also is it me, or is the Tri-Fighter a little scarse?

Actually it does rattle and fall out. I was playing with it last night (thaaat's right) and I did a roll with it and R2 went for a spacewalk. That stinks, I'm surprised nobody mentioned this until now that I saw. I don't get this, the Saga X-wing can hold its R2 in even when upside-down simply by having a properly-sized socket for the body.

One thing. How hard would it have been for them to put pegs in the droid slot to hold the droid in??? All the holes on the droids are in the same spot anyways. Actually, there are a few astromech figs where the pegholes are in the back of the feet instead of in the middle. R4-G9 doesn't have pegholes at all.

Also is it me, or is the Tri-Fighter a little scarse? I hadn't thought about that, but yeah, I saw very few Droid Tri Fighters at MM TRU and on Saturday at Target, I wonder why. I am glad I got one half a month early.

JT:Ooh! My BAD! The Galoob (LJN) and Trek Movie by mego figures of course fit in the ARC fighter. Playmates figs, especially the women do fit in the pilot seats and some of the older figs when they didn't care about quality (Voyager series on up). All Playmates figs fits the cargo holds and passenger areas in other toys such as the Millenium Falcon, the older SlaveI, the Arena and Naboo playsets, ATAT,etc. No AA fit, sorry!
RS:As for having Joes turn into "Star Wars" guys you have to practice, practice, practice. you cna practice by buying the 99 cent SWAT and Soldier figures, or if at Wal-Mart "the Corps" figures or your old beaten up 1970's SW figs or bootlegs. If you screw up buy some desert sand colored or OD colored paint and boom "Commandos". The USMC has/had camo jets and flight gear, look in the net.

04-05-2005, 04:33 AM

Trust me, the TNG Galoob figures are around the same height, maybe a little shorter, but not a whole inch. That's mostly due to progress though, they fit in perfectly with the vintage line. They have really awesome headsculpts as well, even in 50 years you would be able to tell that it's Riker, Picard, Geordi, etc.

Galoob proved they did more than perfect ships. :)

I found an ARC-170 at Toys R Us and it's a great ship; a little big for a starfighter, but a great toy, especially considering that it practically guarantees that they'll sell 3 clone pilots for each one. I have not seen one since Midnight Madness, though.

Speaking of clone pilots, they had some at Wal-Mart yesterday when they were putting some new boxes out.

My biggest complaint about the ARC-170 is it's size. The "footprint' is almost as big as the Millenium Falcon and the wing guns are a bit unweildy, but for $30 (as someone here has already said), it's a great buy (and a lot of fun).

Tycho
04-05-2005, 01:53 PM
I hear you. It's very big for a starfighter.

I came up with a plan.

I'm going to take "pledges" from friends who did not buy the ARC Fighter yet to purchase my 2 extras from me loose (with stickers un-applied, and all the box parts in mint (but opened) condition) at the same price I paid for them. The same deal goes for 2 Droid Tri-Fighters.

I'm moving my coffee table out of my living room to give me the maximum floor space.

I will then set up my space battle with 3 ARC-170's, the 2 Jedi Starfighters, and the appropriate number of Tri-Fighters to make their numbers at least look threatening. (1 Tri-fighter against an ARC-Fighter alone makes it appear like the Separatists could only last about 1 second above Coruscant. If you're going to set up a battle and make it look cool, you'll need at least 3 Tri-Droid Fighters, and maybe 5 vulcher droid fighters when they come out).

Anyway, I will then lay out my Battle of Endor Ships in a dog fight parallel to the ROTS display:

2 X-wings
1 B-Wing
1 A-wing
1 Y-wing

vs.

4 TIE Figthers
2 TIE Interceptors

I will see if adding the Falcon (I can now pick up an extra one), and if necessary, adding 2 more TIEs to keep the Empire a threat, will work.

If this is way too huge to hang (opposite corners when suspended in my "Coruscant / Death Star Room") I will sell 2 ARC-170's loose with opened-but-mint packaging and save myself the cost of 6 more pilots as well. (Plus I can return 2 of 5 Droid Tri-Fighters I bought).

I've never had to worry about size before with Hasbro ships, but they outdid themselves by making a flying-fortress out of the ARC 170 Clone Fighter!

My wife had a operation on her foot Friday afternoon, so she was still a little woozy from the pain medication. Saturday morning, she asked me, "How bad was the damage?"

"Not as bad as it could have been," I told her.

I have too much stuff as it is; that's not inherently bad, but I'm out of display space. I need to build some shelves.

For as much as i love this ship, I can't help but b*tch about how poorly the stickers were sized or how they partially fit over the screwholes. I think the people at Hasblah are a bunch of screwholes!! :frus:

I agree about the stickers of course my feeling is they pay some 7 year old kid in Taiwan 1.50 a week to twist the tie wraps on why not another 1.50 for another kid to put the freaking stickers on... especially the ones that go in the cockpit of <insert starfighter of your choice here> I mean my fingers arent that small.

that is a beautiful thing of course my kids decided to bypass the chasing each other with ships and spend the day in the yard where my 3 yr old daughter took the Mace Windu Lightsaber I bought her and beat the crap out of my 8 year old son with his Anakin Saber. Oh my little clan of SW kids. (and yes I've worked SW references into all 3 of my kids names tho I had to go a little EU to slip it by... Gregory Trystan Harrisson (Ford .. duh), Gwendolyn (mara) Jade, and Gavin (Darklighter) Alexander.)

So today, I was lying on my back kinda tired from doing some work, now thinking about where to put my ROTS figures (I ended up evicting my POTF2 '95 crew, the first Cinema Scene that was behind them, and the Electronic Power F/X Vader facing off against Obi-Wan to make room) and listening to the ANH SE soundtrack, it was a whole theme thing, and I looked over and noticed that my Lego ARC-170 in its temporary landing spot on a pile of junk was now running from the recently-purchased Lego Droid Tri-Fighter sitting across the floor. Feeling that was not an appropriate situation as the Tri-Fighter is much smaller than the ARC, I proceeded to pick up both ships and fly them around in battle while listening to the SW music. It was at that point I realized that the ARC had no reasonable way to defend itself against the Tri-Fighter head-on because the damn ARC's guns are a few light-years out to the side and there are no central weapons!

Sure, the X-wing has a similar issue, but that is a much more agile craft and not so large that you could fly a TIE Fighter up in between its cannons. The ARC, on the other hand, you could fly a Star Destroyer up its nose and it'd still be pretty helpless, especially since its wide wingspan makes it seem like it's not particularly maneuverable (this going on the assumption that Star Wars space battles are at least somewhat based on real Earth atmospheric battles, otherwise we'd be seeing dogfighting tactics befitting Babylon 5 rather than the battle of Midway). So what will the ARC-170 do to defend itself? Eject half the crew as decoys? Drop its bombs and hope someone flies into them? Fly really slow and fire straight ahead blindly counting on the odds that some idiot will fly right at their wingtips? At this point, I have the Lego Droid Tri-Fighter and ARC-170 back in their original positions, hoping at least the tail gunner will take down a few bogies.

Just waaaaayy tooooo much thought put into that one...

Tycho
04-06-2005, 03:34 AM
Well I put a lot of effort into setting up my space battles today.

I took down my Battle of Endor from its black bookshelf environment (my position for it while I live in my apartment because I only want to hang them in my permanent home ONCE).

I laid it out on my living room floor starting from one "corner" (not literally, it was closer to mid-room) and saw that 6 TIE Fighters was plenty. Adding more to keep it bigger than the Battle Of Coruscant would be ridiculous.

(The Battle of Endor is more important, because that is when the Emperor and his Death Star fell....see Episode Six).

So across from this, I'd set up:

1 ARC 170
Anakin and Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighters from ROTS
vs.
3 Tri-Fighter Droids
3 "borrowed" Trade Federation Droid fighters (off their stand)

to see how things look.

I have 2 more Un-Opened Droid Tri-Fighters and 2 more Un-Opened ARC 170's.

It'd be too much. As it is, only the B-wing in my Rebel Fleet at Endor matches the attention the ARC 170 commands.

Expanding either space battle would take up more room and push each war more towards the center of a room, thereby eliminating the distance between the fleets that needs to represent 23 years in their fictional histories.

AT THIS POINT, MY DECISION WILL BE TO NOT OPEN THE 2 OTHER ARC-170's or the TRI-FIGHTERS and reaffirm that "less is more." - plus recoup $100+ by returning the unopened vehicles.

That leaves my large vehicle displays at:

TPM:Battle of Naboo

4 N1 Starfighters
9 Trade Federation Droid Fighters (3 sets)

1 AAT
2 STAPs
1 Faamba
1 Falumpaset
3 Kaaduu
2 catapults

AOTC: Battle of Geonosis

2 Geonosian Fighters
1 Dooku speeder
1 Hailfire Droid
2 mini Spider Droids
3 Trade Federation Droid Fighters (1 set)
2 Republic Gunships
1 Jedi Starfighter (flown by Adi Gallia)
(hopefully adding an AT-TE and a large Homing Spider Droid some day)

ROTS: Battle of Coruscant

1 ARC 170 Fighter
Anakin's Starfighter
Obi-Wan's Starfighter
3 Tri-Fighter Droids
6 Vulture Droids (when they are released)

ANH: Battle of Yavin

Luke's X-wing
Darth Vader's TIE Fighter
2 TIE Fighters

2 vintage Death Star Playsets

ESB: Battle of Hoth

1 AT-AT (turned down many $10 AT-AT's on clearance. 1 looks good)
1 AT-ST
1 Probe Droid
3 Rebel Snowspeeders (1's crashed)
1 Turret Playset (vintage)
1 Imperials Attack Base (vintage)
2 Deluxe Rebel Soldier cannon emplacements

ROTJ: Battle of Endor

4 AT-ST's (1 commandeered by Chewbacca)
3 Speederbikes
2 Ewok Villages (vintage)
1 Ewok Glider
1 Ewok catapult (vintage)

2 X-wing Fighters
1 Y-wing Fighter
1 A-wing Fighter
1 B-wing Fighter
4 TIE Fighters
2 TIE Inteceptors

And the Battle of Endor stays ahead as the most important battle of the entire saga.

It's the only way I'm thinking. The other 2 ARC 170's will have to go back. The ship is not more important than Luke or Wedge's x-wings, and adding one of my Millennium Falcons to the scene only requires me to add more TIE Fighters to keep the Rebels outnumbered, but there's no more room for more TIE Fighters.

Less is more.

Simpler is smarter.

I didn't bring myself to return the extra ships today, but I might tomorrow.

What do you guys think?

My girlfriend has the digital camera right now and I'm going to Las Vegas on a trip with a buddy of mine for a bit.

Maybe Thursday or Friday I can get the camera and get a shot of the two biggest fleets laid out on my floor in sort of the poses I'd hang them in.

Well, here is an interesting side story. I have been trying to find a Durango swing set for my kids @ WM. Oddly enough, all the local WM's are sold out. So last night we start calling around and find one in South Point Ohio (I live in Charleston, WV). So, my mom and my girlfriend go to get the swing and I am stuck home with the kids. While they are there, my girlfriend checks the SW stuff and manages to score me 6 figures that I need, including a Clone Pilot. The other 5 were Clone Commander, General Grievous (#36), Vader's Medical Droid, Polis Massan, & Mas Amedda (but sadly enough, no AT-TE Gunner). They only had one of the Clone Commander & Clone Pilot, but one is better than none. So, has anyone else found pilots for their ARC's? Also, can anyone suggest what figures I should use in the other 2 spots until I can find 2 more pilots (or maybe 1 pilot and an AT-TE Gunner)?

On Monday, 4 April, the Wal-Mart on Corridor G was opening a bunch of boxes with the new assortments in them. A buddy of mine and I cleaned them out. They had everything from #33-40. I got 3 clone pilots, 2 clone commanders, 2 AT-TE gunners, and one of everything else. He picked through just about everything else, but when we went back today (Wednesday), all of the #33+ figures were gone.

TRU and Target on Corridor G were similarly bare.

Just waaaaayy tooooo much thought put into that one...Better to have too much than too little. :p :D

Tycho, consider keeping the Droid Tri-Fighters, they're smaller and have 5 buzz droids each inside, you'll likely see these ships swarm and outnumber the other starfighters in the movie the way the Droid Starfighters did in Ep 1. Even in the trailer, you see 3 of these guys, so you've gotta assume you'll see more than that in the film itself.

And the ARC-170s are HTF right now, you could offer them on the SSG auctions and help a couple collectors out by doing BIN - Buy It Now in case you didn't know - with the price you paid or something. (I'd buy 1 from ya, but I don't want to pay shipping)

Bantha274, I can't say if they fit in the ship because I don't have one, but I can tell you that they have full range of articulation in the hipsso they can sit normally (unlike the Clone Wars SA Clone Troopers who have to have their hips forced just to get to 45 degrees because the armor is too close), and no odd proportional problems like their OTC TIE Pilot cousins.

I'm almost set on returning

2 Tri Fighters
2 ARC Fighters

In one room I'll then have left:

1 ARC.............1 Tri Fighter
1 Obi-Wan.......1 Tri Fighter
1 Anakin......... 1 Tri Fighter
.....................Vulcher Droid
.....................Vulcher Droid
.....................Vulcher Droid
.....................Vulcher Droid
.....................Vulcher Droid

X-wing............TIE Fighter
X-wing............TIE Fighter
Y-wing............TIE Fighter
A-wing............TIE Fighter
B-wing............TIE Interceptor
.....................TIE Interceptor

My space battles will pretty much be alright, not Coruscant becoming "more important looking" than the decisive final battle at Endor. TIEs are much bigger than Trade Federation Droid Fighters, so Endor will seem like it is much more prominent. I think I'd like to keep it that way.

I SO LOVE MY ARC-170 Gunship!!!! I found 3 extra Clone Pilots this past week at Wal-Mart to place in the 3 pilot-pits of my ARC! It is so awesome, I love the way it looks and it is a HUGE ship!!! I have my Preview R4-G9 in the Astro slot as well, which I had to put several rubber bands around him just to hold him inside w/o falling out. The only complaint on the ARC-170 is the very front sticker with the red light, it did not seem to want to go on right, and i tried both ways to stick it on. Still over-all I love this ship!

OK, now that more of you guys have the ship, I've seen your comments that "this is a big one!"

Do any of you now realize why it would be hard to find space to even hang-display a fleet of these?

CLASSIC TRILOGY Fans who hang ships, do you see how this ship (displayed in mass) could displace the importance of your Battle of Endor display (assuming you hang fleets of X-wings and TIEs as well?)

I returned my ARCs and several of my Tri-Fighters for this reason.

Is anyone buying and hanging (or otherwise displaying) more than 1 of the ARC's? Please post pictures if you are. Maybe somebody's found a way to space-save. Also comment on where, and how you display your Classic ships and how the ARC display's affected them.

well I was re arranging my stuff. I set the arc down on the floor. I accidently tripped over it, and I noticed that one of the side guns looked as if it had broken off. I was in shock. Then I noticed they pop in with the same connecters as the wings have. No problem. So....if you dont like the big guns, you can shorten them down if you want.

My ARC has been in the office over my desk for 8 days now and it is finally home.....but the wingspan is exactly the size of the AOTC & CW Gunships!

04-13-2005, 07:40 PM
I picked this one up yesterday finally, and I am kinda surprised at how much love you guys are showering on it, this is an ok piece but nothing this noteworthy I think. The size is out of scale with the movie version, the nose and wings are too stubby, so this is the 2005 version of the '78 X-wing in that regard. The sculpting is kinda soft, not a lot of lines or details, it's not horrible but it seems a little unfinished. The paint work is very plain, no weathering at all, making it seem extremely plasticky, and some of the stickers are lame because they're either a little too large for their cutouts or very blurry... and I hate having leftover stickers, especially when they're NUMBERED. Another sticker issue, some didn't have cutouts on the ship, and a few that were supposed to go in the cockpit had the worst explanation of where they went, I still ain't sure where those 2 matching gray and blue ones go. The tail gunner's canopy is sculpted but not painted, that seems odd since the main canopy is painted. The bomb bay flopping down like that is a bit goofy, but it's forgiveable I suppose. I really dislike the huge guns still (and I knew they removable from their gun base the second I got them out of the package, it's a Hasbro safety feature cropping up in Transformers a lot now) and their missiles are really annoying.

But all of that is minor, there's 2 things that REALLY bother me:

First is the droid socket - this is EXACTLY the same issue that the Ep 3 Jedi Starfighter suffers from, the droid sticks out the top so much because the designers at Hasbro didn't make room for the legs sticking down past the bottom of the droid barrel body... there might not be enough room on the Jedi Starfighter for that, but there's NO excuse here on the ARC-170 as it appears to be totally hollow beneath that droid socket. And this droid socket is loose and drops the figure back out, so lame.
Second is the S-foil wings which you have to open manually, that in of itself isn't the problem, it's that the bottom wings open so much further than the top wings - I can't stand this!!! There's no way to have them hold in the right position either as their little stops actually prevent this, they pop out right before you get it where they should be. To me, this is so frustrating.

Ok, now I've said all the things that make me wonder why there's a "fan club" here for this thing, I will point out that I like how all 3 of my ROTS#6 Clone Troopers looked in the seats, they fit well and didn't rattle around, the one in the back made the wonky rear gun piece totally acceptable somehow. The bombs are fun to drop, it does look kinda cool as a WW2-looking plane, and the ship is pretty "whooshable" for a larger Star Wars vehicle. All in all, it's a decent ship, I do like it, but it does seem half-baked to me, like they weren't finished with the design and sent it out before the last few revisions were done. I definitely think the Republic Gunship is the superior of the 2 vehicles, there's a lot more toy there and it delivers better in sculpt and gimmicks and deco.

I think the love comes from the cool look of the thing and the fact that a lot of the prequel vehicles have left something to be desired in the looks department. I cannot think of a prequel vehicle that has really done it for me. Prior to this, I would have to say the Gunship, but that was at a pretty high price point.

That's funny...I was just thinking how cheap the Gunship was! Even when it 1st came out at $40 I thought it was a good deal compared to the AT-AT which is less plastic, less detail, less missles for 2x as much. Guess it just depends on your point of view.

I love the Arc but I think the Gunship is still my favorite...I've always loved troop transport vehicles and drop ships more than fighters. My favorite vehicle growing up was the GI Joe Tomahawk cause it could carry so many figures. The Gunship reminds me of that.

Prior to this, I would have to say the Gunship, but that was at a pretty high price point. It was originally $10 more, but in the Clone Wars line Hasbro dropped the price point to $30, which is exactly what the ARC-170 costs now.

I picked up 2 more Clone Troopers yesterday, bringing my total to 5, which means 2 for basic fig display and 3 more to man this ship until the actual pilot figure can be found. 1 of these CTs may end up splitting his time between this and the AT-RT though, since he fits great on the dang thing and looks better than the statue figure it came with.

BTW, I forgot to mention another thing which keeps it out of my highest-honors slot: the landing foot (which so far of all the folks I know, I am the only one who actually likes it there) sometimes drops, not unlike the Y-wing's problem only simpler.

The Gunship has a built-in hanging line. The rappeling line can be wrapped around the carrying handle, and then wrap one of the lines around the button that opens the doors and it hangs at the perfect angle. I just tired the line and hung it from a hook on my ceiling.

How hard is it to hang the ARC-170? I have a feeling it will be bad like the Naboo Fighter or the ROTS Jedi Starfighter.

What do you use to hang your ships? I tried it once with clear fishing line.

The OTC Millenium Falcon is hung by metal wire (didn't have fishing line), then I got a STAP, A-Wing and Slave I (SOTE) hung by sewing thread. The hanging area is getting crowded, though because I have a stucco ceiling. I hang my ships from the wooden frame around the door to the crawlspace, it's a 2 or 3-foot square.

I went to a TRU at opening and then this redneck guy (he was creepy!!

So I got that and #35 palpy to open. Besides, the 33-40 cases are supposed to ship in MAY (its still APRIL), just be patient you'll find some. :D

The sculpting and paint work are pretty soft, the arm articulation is crummy, and the accessories are crap (though that missile does fire pretty darn far for a marble-shooter). Hey Zabbaca,
I think I saw you there this morning. I walked in at around 8:10 and saw someone (maybe you?) walking by the video section with the little red basket. I thought I spied the CC's and pilots in there. Nice score! I guess I was just a few minutes too late to get in on the action......

I was there at 8am, but I had no basket though. I got five clone commanders and three pilots. Gave three commanders and one pilot to my friends at work.

I am not one of that e-bay dealer scum, I have a soul.

I had to get two more pilots to complete my ARC-170 crew.

Anyways I trade with members here at the forum, I just traded with darth22 from IN; a Holo Yoda for a clone commander (I know the commander is a common figure, but I like to help out fellow Star Wars collectors complete their collections).

If you want we can network, and help each other out when searching for the figures.

I’ll see you at Target on May 5th.

The paint on the 3 I have is pretty good but I do agree with you on the sclupt. IMO tho, it's the character that lacks something not the toy. Even the pic on the package isn't awe inspiring. And although it is a new look, I don't think you should see any clone or stormtroopers faces. They should all have complete helmets, but that's just me.

Where this figure really does shine tho is having 3 in the cockpit of the ARC or 2 in the gunship. It really completes the look of the ships for me. So I'm happy with them. I'm also really glad they went with the neutral pose this time around, unlike the AOTC pilot.

I nabbed 3 at Kohl's a couple weeks ago and I'll buy probably buy another 2 if I can find them at the same time. (Don't want to waste money on a 4th if I can't nab a 5th.)

Well I think you can trade on the Trade forums. That's what I have done. I am sure there you can network and get some trades going, but It would be on a figure per figure bases. I wouldn’t price gouge.

I have only found one Tank gunner so far, but if I see any extra I’ll be willing to trade. I know some people live out in the sticks, and they can't get to a local store as easily as some of us can. My buddy Steve Barbie used to trade with people from all over, helping other fans build their collection, and that’s what I’ve been up to this time around.

As for the sculpt, the pic shows a lot more detail than the figure has, it's not a great look, but it's still much better than the sculpt of the figure (turns out the Clone Commander is like this too, not as bad though). I ended up picking up 2 more of these last night when I found 'em at TRU after saying I wouldn't, I'm a doof. ;)

I'm glad I picked up my ARC 170 when I did (Day after MM), becasue they are nowhere to be found now. I still haven't seen them at Walmart, only TRU and Target. Is the 170 exclusive to those two chains? Either way, Hasbro has a hit on it's hands with this one. In fact, in my area, all the ships and vehicles are selling well. This is great news, 'cause that could mean more ships in the future like, say a new Cloud Car 'Hint' 'Hint'.

Now, I just need some pilots for my 170...

Oh, if any of you live near Visalia California and are looking for Clone Pilots.. The Walmart has a butt load of them, I don't know if they still do, but I went Wednesday night, and I must have found ten of them along with the Palpantine with the red saber.

The abundant vehicles in NE Pennsylvania are the Jedi Interceptors. Grievous' wheel bike is found sporadically, and TRU still has six ARC-170s. Well here it is my How to convert their store bought ARC-170 into a movie quality star fighter worthy of the republic forces!

In order to start your ARC-170 upgrades you first have to have the fallowing materials.
1. An ARC-170 star fighter (I got two, one to paint and one to keep in box)
2. A Dremel Mini Mite, or any other type of electric cordless sander. You don’t have to use an electric sander, but I have to warn you getting the paint off the wings and body of the ship is very hard, even with a Mini Mite. I used the narrow pointed sanding tool.
3. A bottle of Polly Scale Model Railroad Colors “Grimy Black”. (retails between $3.99-$5.99).
4. A bottle of Tamiya Color Flat Black acrylic paint XF-1 (For Air Brushing). (Retails between $3.99-$5.99)
5. A bottle of Model Masters “German Silver Metallic” enamel paint. (Retails between $2.50-$3.00)
6. A bottle of Model Masters “Silver Chrome trim” enamel paint. (Retails between $2.50-$3.00)
7. A bottle of Testors thinner. (Retails $2.50)
8. A bottle of rubbing alcohol (retails for about $1.00)
9. Some fine grain and medium grain sand paper.
10. Cotton q-tips, and Cottenel paper towels (don’t use Kleenex they are messy)
11. And finally some paint brushes, I use the synthetic white sable brushes. Get a fine point brush, a medium sized brush, and a larger brush.
(You can buy most of these supplies at your local hobby shop, or online)

Here we go …
Ok first off you have to make sure you have a well ventilated work area with enough work room to get this project started.
First you want to erode the reddish paint on the wings and body of the ship by sanding along the edges using your Dremel. You want to think about the type of erosion the wings and engine cowling would get by the countless impacts the ARC-170 would take after destroying droid fighters along its flight path. For reference I looked at the ROTS Incredible Cross-Section book from DK. You also want to look at real life reference like old WWII air craft. You want to study the type of erosion that an aircraft paneling and engine cowling show. You want to think about it this way; the closer you get to the front of the craft the more wearing the panels get. You want to be erratic in your sanding; you want to avoid even erosion, this makes it look more real.
Once you have sanded down the wings you want to go back and use your sand paper, first the medium grain then the fine grain paper. Work the areas out unevenly so you get a natural erosion look.
For blast marks I used the Dremel to drill into the body of the craft to create sort of a creator shape. Sand this down along the edges to get a flatter surface look.

Airbrushing is next, for this I used a fine or detail air brush tip. You want to make leak like stains starting at the back of panels and working back toward the tail of the ship. You want to make these erratic as well. Think what a leaky WWII fighter plane or Bomber might look like if its hydraulic fluids or oil were leaking out of panels or engines. Think long streaks that fade as you go further back towards the tail end of the ship; imagine all of the air blowing on the fluids staining the ships frame. (Let dry over night)
If you don’t have an air brush, use the fine paint brush and streak the paint backward using alcohol, paper towels and Q-tips.

The chipped paint effect that I used for the wings, nose, and panels is achieved by painting the areas that I sanded down (the reddish areas), with the Model Masters “Silver Chrome trim” enamel paint. I used the detail brush for this job. The trick here if to get an uneven look, Imagine how paint looks on an old car or beat up truck, it’s chipped off and worn down. You should have more pint chipping at the edges of panels and wings, more so on the front end of the ship.

You now need to use the Scale Model Railroad Colors “Grimy Black” in all the crevasses in the engine, panels, and wings. Think of the carbon scoring that is wedged in these tight spaces during battle. Wipe off any excess grim off with alcohol and paper towels.

The engines and main guns by them selves look very plane, so to spruce them up I used the Model Masters “German Silver Metallic” enamel paint. I use the medium and large brush with a dry brush technique, using a dry brush almost free of paint to stroke in highlights on the edges of the engines and guns. I then go back in and paint the edges once more using the Model Masters “Silver Chrome trim” enamel paint, to make the edges pop. Think how a beat up old piece of metal looks, the edges of an old trucks bead, or an old tool box.

That’s about it; I hope this helps some of you guys/gals in customizing your ARC-170. And for those of you who were wondering what droid I used, it was a R5-D2 from the Star Tours line, I find that he works best with the ships colors, and he’s pretty beat up.

And for you local folks that live in the L.A. area, I purchased my supplies at Burbank House of Hobbies, a great little shop that has tons of great models and supplies. I cannot recommend a better shop.

Amazon.com has ARC-170 for $24.99 and Pilots for $4.99 so buying the ARC and 3 pilots and a Droid might come out about the same has finding it in store after paying shipping for those who don't have one.

I finally bought this ship today. I prefer the Gunship, and envy Zabbaca's cusomt paint job even more. The ship doesn't look that good paint-wise. Too clean. Too plasticy. I don't regret the purchase, though. It's still a cool ship.

I failed, failed, failed in hanging this from my ceiling. Tried all kinds of stuff but couldn't get it to hang on it's proper center of gravity. I guess it's bound for my closet now :(

I didnt even try to hang it yet... It sits on top of my iMac in the corner quite nicely. Did you try wire?

My ARC-170 barely has enough room to be displayed. As a matter of fact, the entire outer half of the left wing is hanging off my entertainment center. It was the only place left to display it, but the ARC also has to share that space with the Millennium Falcon and Republic Gunship. After that, I just gave up looking for room to display the large vehicles and tossed the AT-AT and Imperial Shuttle in the closet.

You have an Imperial Shuttle and you closeted it? Man, that's like the Holy Grail for me!

I tried fishing line to hang the ARC. The problem is that no matter where you wrap the line, the ship goes vertical, either diving towards the ground or climbing to the sky. It doesn't look right at all.

Then you know exactly why I don't have the room for it when combined w/ the ARC-170, Falcon, and Gunship. Well...maybe you don't know since you've never seen my apartment... :p

Seriously, I wish I could display it. A goal of mine for the next place my wife and I live is to have a large enough space to display everything like a museum.

Hi gang,

:) Here is my ARC-170 next to my friends. It really puts things in perspective; just by adding some color to the flat paint job, it came in originally, changes your outlook on the vehicle. I hope Hasbro comes out with a battle damaged version of the ARC-170 sometime this year, the out of box version looks way to plasticy.

Well, now that everyone (hopefully) has seen the movie, how do you feel about the ARC-170. I, for one, was unhappy with the lack of screen time for such an awesome ship.

I kind of expected not to see too much of it. Hey, we didn't really see any V-Wings, other than maybe 2 shots toward the end...

My interest in the ship dropped immensely while watching the film, they basically do nothing but get blown up in the beginning and we barely see them do anything after that even while shooting down Plo Koon's JSF. I was also really sad to see the Droid Tri-Fighter get barely any screentime and had NOTHING to do at all, it's like Lucas packed TOO MUCH stuff into this film and so it was too crowded thus none of it got any focus or activity.

I hope that there is alot more of this in the cut scenes or extended version. We gave this vehicle an entire fan club, and now it seems kinda wasted (even though the vehicle itself it still awesome).

Well -- I am going to do it !! (Thanks a-lot Zabbaca!! :crazed: ) I have decided to remake my ARC-170 also. However -- I am going to try to FILL all the bullet holes on the ships right side. This reason alone made me want to redo this ship -- That and seeing what a GREAT SHIP Zabbaca has turned his ARC into.

I used to build models (Cars) as a teenager and here is what I am going to try to use -- Comments are WELCOME.

1. -- I have used Testors Contour Putty to just fill in the holes. I realized that some of these holes are DEEP -- so I used a 3/16 dowl rod to help fill the hole.

2. -- I got some Model Master Sandpaper and I will use this to smooth out the holes a little. I am keeping my fingers crossed :ermm:

3. -- I bought some MM flat Gull Gray to "repaint" the ship once the holes are filled. It is a little darker -- but it looks a little more metal that the origional.
I had also bought Light Sea Gray -- but it looks a little too dark.

4. -- For the Green Stripe -- I got MM Dark Green (FS34079) -- it looks EXACTLY like the stripe.

5. -- For the red on the ship -- I needs some advice on this. I bought Insigna Red, but it looks a little bright. I plan on masking off the red -- just in case I have to leave this color -- but I would like to do a repaint.

FYI -- I was going to try yo take the ship abart and make the Droid hole a bit bigger -- but I don't believe I am that advanced --
So I bought a Vintage R5-D4 droid to use for the ship to make up for my lack of effort.

If anyone is interested -- I will post some pictures once I get a little further along. Wish me Luck :D

check out my post about a free image program that works pretty well.

BTW, for the droid socket, if you don't feel like cutting out the floor, you could take any extra R2 figure you have and cut off its feet where they meet the figure's barrel body, then it'll be the right height for the socket, same with the Jedi Starfighter's socket.

Thanks MM for the comments !! -- I am in the process of putting the origional colors back onth the ARC. I still have not found a "red" that suits my needs as of yet. I am going to work on it this weekend quite a bit so I will keep you posted.

This is my first time trying something like this -- so I am a bit slow.

I used to paint model cars -- so all the colors were NEW. Weathering is a pain in the Booty!! :crazed:

Just picked up my first ARC 170 last week: sold a Jedi Temple Assault Battle Pack. The only thing that confuses me are the hanging wing guns. They aren't symmetrical, so either way, the silver screws have to be on the outside of one of the wings. I would have thought they should both face inwards. Any suggestions/ideas?

There isn't a way around it. Hasbro cut a corner again and instead of making a left and right gun, they only made a left for both sides. Does it really surprise you, I thought not.:)

I don't have a gaming system. I barely ever play video games, but I did love Rogue Squadron (preferring X-wings over any Star Wars fightercraft - hey, I AM Tycho afterall).

Meanwhile, I don't want my new place to become as much of a "toy store" as my old home was. I want to wait until I can buy a large house - that's my dream anyway. Perhaps after the bulk of all my company comes and goes (coming for Comic Con this summer) - I'll grab some fighters out of storage and bring them over. It's so hard to choose though. Next I'll want Vader's TIE or some snowspeeders  Jango's Slave-One....

One of the aspects I love most about the whole 3 3/4" collection is the interactive vehicles! They are so sweet!

I'm thinking of putting my Arc-170 on ebay. It's a really big vehicle and takes up a lot of space. I'd be sad to see it go, but I could use the extra cash. And I know there are probably folks out there who missed out and want one.

Tycho
07-03-2006, 02:43 PM
You'll regret it if you sell it. I'm just telling you...

Besides, is less than $30 extra cash (after a week long auction) really going to make that much of a difference?

JON9000
07-12-2006, 11:51 AM
It's the space, more than anything, and I would put the money into completing my loose vintage collection. $40 (includes pilot and R2 unit) would get me a nice loose figure, since I'm getting down to the more expensive ones...

Tycho
07-12-2006, 03:44 PM
You'll miss not having an ARC fighter. Stick it under your bed or something if you want to make more space. Better yet, hang it with fishing wire from your ceiling and it won't take up ANY space. I'm sure you can come up with $40 another way.

JON9000

Well, I went ahead and put her up, so I suppose I can no longer be part of the fan club... :(

these things aren't as popular as the gunship, but they tend to do pretty well. So, I should at least recoup my money even if it has been opened and displayed.

I got the one from 2008(I think?) with the Wampa nose stickers. I'm guessing it was related to the Cartoon. It's freakin huge, fits the pilots and gunners nicely.

Only complaints I had were about the tail gun, mine didn't come with anything to attach it into the hole in the back, and any droid I stick in the slot doesn't really sit right. The tail gun thing doesn't affect the design of it though, which is great.

Minor complaints aside, overall I think it's the best fighter I could have asked for. I agree with Tycho too, it's a tossup between this guy and the Jedi fighters for me.

Droids not sticking to their sockets giant stickers, and guns not fitting are a staple of SW toys since the Kenner days with the Y wing fighter! My SW and old school GI Joe/The Corps toys now fight the Avretread/ Marvel-DC/ and GI JERK the motion pic toys when no one is looking! Still NO TREK! GO figure!

Comparing the ARC-170 to the CW Y-wing is like comparing a toy from 15 years ago to a modern one. The ARC-170 just doesn't look very crisp or accurate or fun compared to the Y-wing. I put the ARC-170 back in its box never to be heard from again.
