Check this one out, looks like someone at the plant packed this figure without its cardboard insert:

I was surprised at how different looking the set appears without its insert, something so minor yet so extremely important to the look I guess.

It wouldn't be to hard to remove the insert and seal it back up if you were careful with the tape. The tape is applied rather loosely on mine and there isn't any of it covering the top of the clamshell so you could probably remove the insert by pulling the clamshell apart slightly and pulling it out from the top and nobody would be the wiser. I'm sure some sucker would probably pay good money for this on ebay though. lol

Exactly what i was going to say. To me it's not even a REAL variation because of how easy it would be to modify. :crazed:

Hmmm, could there be more to it than this? I posted about my dad seeing the same thing at his Target in GA in this thread:

Posted it 04-04-05...

Wonder how many more are like this & if it is a legit variation?

Either way, you would want the version with the insert just because it could in fact, be modified, if the w/o version tended to be more sought after.

I would agree.... I think this line Hasbro really dropped the ball because it is so easy to pass off a fake as opposed to other lines..
