View Full Version : Playboy to Feature Star Wars in June Issue

Playboy will feature Star Wars in the upcoming June 2005 issue, including a pictorial layout with a female actress from Episode III. The May 2005 issue has a teaser photo from the pictorial but her face is cropped. I obviously can't post the pic here, but I can tell you that a Bengal Tiger tattoo holds sway....

If you can't wait til June, then grab the May issue for a sneak peek. It's worth it - you'll also find amidst those glossy pages a stunning pictorial of some real-life "Desperate Housewives."

From the May 2005 Playboy:

The Star Wars Dossier--Darth Vader may be Luke's father, but we're the Big Daddy when it comes to Star Wars trivia. Our compendium goes from a galaxy far, far away to Zuckuss, including the most expensive toy, the best SNL skits and why Princess Leia was a major buzz kill. Also: is that a lightsaber in your pocket, or are you happy to see our cover girl? A Star Wars Episode III beauty bares all in a superstellar pictorial.

I believe it is Bai Ling, who plays a senator in ROTS. I remember reading about it on imdb.

Too bad it isn't Natalie Portman, though. Or the hot chick who plays Bail Organa's aide.

I read about this a few days ago on theforce.net and was debating whether to post this or not. But now someone else did, so I won't take the flak. :)

For once, when you say, "I got it for the articles," you'll be telling the truth. ;)

I have a subscription so I don't know when the new issue will hit newstands. I'm guessing mid-May, around the Episode III release date. I dunno 'bout you guys, but I get the mag for the nekkid chicks. Who wants to read the last article by Hunter S. Thompson? ;)

Bai Ling is pretty fine, but I would rather see Natalie Portman pose nude or maybe Amy Allen (Aayla Secura) or Michonne Bourriague (Aurra Sing). Shannon McRandle (nee Baksa) was the original Mara Jade model and is still a hottie. She still does modeling work but is married with three kids.

I too am a subscriber and just received the new issue a few days ago so I'd assume that mid-May we'll see the SW issue.

Anyone else keep these magazines? I'm planning on getting a few years worth then dumping them on eBay. So far I have 4-5 years worth.

I wonder what control, if any, GL put over Bai Ling in associating her nekkid layout and SW. Obviously GL doesn't care that Star Wars is going to be emblazoned on the cover but I doubt we'll see any referencing material in the pictures. Personally I think a background Clonetrooper would be hysterical. :D

GL is selling out right now like there's no tomorrow. I thought Episode I was bad in terms of merchandising and shameless marketing, but ROTS is turning out to be the pinnacle of his efforts. I don't think GL would give a crap right now if Terrorist Weekly ran a fluff piece on the "Misunderstood Movitations of Darth Vader" along with a companion piece on "The Ten Ways You can Behead the Infidels just like a Real Jedi!"

I hope that this is not the reason why the ROTS trailer says "This Film Is Not Yet Rated."

On the marketing side, remember when Lucas got villified for glutting the market with products for TPM, then really cut back for AOTC? Well, maybe he's running low on moola and needs to put a SW logo on anything that can be purchased. Cases in point:

- Lay's products
- M&M Mars products
- Hasbro products
- Kellogg's products
- Playschool products
- Parker Bros. products
- Topps products
- Dark Horse products (I think)
- Nabisco products (I think that's Cheez-Its company)
- Cingular products (I think that's who's doing the ring tones)

I that doesn't count Lucas' own companies (Lucas Books, Lucas Arts, etc.) Don't get me wrong, I think that's okay, because the customer may choose to buy (or not) whatever they want.

Why, are they worth anything? I have ten years worth of Playboy and at least that many National Geographic. I gave away my Rolling Stone collection to my cousin after I stopped subscribing. Playboy and National Geographic are nice magazines - plus there's just something about porn that makes it difficult to part with. The only other mag I subscribe to is Heavy Metal, the adult comic magazine. I've been reading that since the late 80s.

I don't think they are worth a large amount but they are worth a few bucks each, it really depends on the women inside. Some issues are more collectible than others, same thing could be said for Rolling Stone. Rather than trying to piece out a collection I think it'll be better off dumping the whole thing in one shot. I've seen a few collections in the past get a few hundred $$ for them. I'm definately not planning on retiring with the money I make but it should hopefully be a nice amount none the less. I'm probably going to sell them when I hit the 10 year, 240 magazine mark.

Bel-Cam Jos
04-16-2005, 06:43 PM
For the most part, I've noticed that book and magazine "collectibles" aren't really all that hot, financially speaking. Comics are different, but unless there's something really unique and special about that issue (and you know how mags try to hype up just about anything as "unique" or "special" ), it'll just be another one in the run. Are the Star Wars articles in LIFE, Time, or Rolling Stone worth a lot because of SW? Well, to some, maybe. But to most, no. I see these as little different.

Exhaust Port
04-16-2005, 08:46 PM
Right, it has a lot to do with what's in the magazines as I had said before. I've seen a year's worth of Playboys go for anywhere between $30-$150 so it can greatly vary. Playboy is one of the only magazines that is a collectible in itself unlike what someone might see in LIFE or Time magazine where their value is dependant on what the magazine wrote about.

Well. . . I just got back from Celebration III and I have to say there is NO DOUBT in my mind that Bai Ling is in the upcoming Playboy. When my brother and I met her, not only was she wearing practically nothing, and falling out of her top. . . she was READING Playboy at her table!!!   While posing for pictures she giggled and said "He he he. . . I'm reading Playboy", and would only giggle some more when asked if she was in it.

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting, and talking with most of the actors from the saga (I missed out on a few), but Bai was by far the most unbelievable of the bunch.

I didn't catch her in the Fan Club lounge (Sunday afternoon). . . but I'm curious to find out how that went. I'm sure she was equally as entertaining.

My brother dubbed her the "Paris Hilton" of Star Wars. I could find little to rebuke that.

So this must be the Star Wars TV series that Lucas has promised. So George will be writing, directing, and - could it be... starring?!

Here's the pitch:

Successful indie filmmaker "George" lives on his ranch with his two wiseacre kids, his live-in Playboy Playmate girlfriend, and his two bestest friends, "Rick" and "Ben".

"Rick" and "Ben (Burtt)" [the man with two first names - running gag, hilarious] share the ranch's guest house and involve "George" in all kinds of wacky adventures both in and out of Hollywood, all the while scheming against each other for coveted living quarters in the main house.

"George" continues to make bad films that still manage to make tons of money, has problems understanding the behavior of his much younger galpal, and struggles being a single-parent to two Hollywood-crazed youngsters, all the while remaining free of the dreaded Hollywood-Studio "machine."

The pilot will feature a bevy of guest stars including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Hayden Christiansen, and Ewan MacGregor.

This is FOX gold!

Hmm, yes, I see... (hands in the "pyramid" thing by my mouth as I think about it...)

And then, in "a very special episode" near the end of the season, we introduce a couple of naughty, yet misunderstood, misentropes who George has to teach a lesson. This leads to a spin-off series for next season called Banned From the Ranch. Slightly lighter with more emphasis on sight gags and toilet humor, this spin off should be the perfect companion for the Star Wars fan who likes his entertainment in easy to chew pieces, much like the Prequels have been. :D

"Banned From the Ranch" heh heh, I like that. Sounds like the perfect vehicle for Ron Jeremy and Pamela Anderson. Dang, scratch that, Pamela's tied up with her new FOX show, "Stacked." Maybe we can get Paris Hilton.

1. He already is as skinny as her.

2. He always has those guards flanking him. Paris always has guys flanking her.

4. Grievous has ended up in armorplast casing due to a shuttle crash. Paris will probably end up in something similar; due to all the STDs she'll probably acquire, she won't be able to walk straight for too much longer...:p

I don't know if it has anything to do with the Playboy pictorial, but Bai Ling has been cut from ROTS. I believe it was in the C3 pictures on the official site...her picture's caption said something to the effect of "Bai Ling (Senator Bana Breemu - Revenge of the Sith DVD Edition). By specifying DVD Edition, that makes it sound like a deleted scene appearance. I guess that means her only scene was in the deleted "Delegation of the Two Thousand" sequence (and that's all I'll say for the spoiler-squemish).

OK...I have a correction to make and additional info...

Correction: Bai Ling does not appear in the "Delegation of the Two Thousand" scene. According to her quotes on the IMDB news wire, she cried that her scene (singular not plural) was cut. According to The Making of Revenge of the Sith, she appeared in Padme's apartment. There's even a photo of it.

Additional Info: In the same news article, she's basically insinuating that Lucas cut her from the film because she posed topless for Playboy. However, page 158 of The Making of ROTS specifies that her scene (Scene 71) was deleted between sometime between November 5-20, 2003--over a year and a half ago!!! The photo caption also states "Two shots from the deleted scene 71, in which Senators...SPOILER" and then lists her character.

Now, I'm sure Playboy didn't even approach her until a few months ago, so Lucas had cut her role long before Playboy. Maybe she didn't find out until recently, but that was a pretty big presumption on her part.

Well, I got the fabled Playboy Star Wars issue in the mail today. There is actually only a small feature devoted to Star Wars, and that is mostly bad trivia with a lot of sexual innuendo. There is no Episode III article, no behind-the-scenes look, or even a pictorial on the film at all, which is what I was expecting.

The Bai Ling pictorial doesn't feature any photos of her in Episode III costume. It looks as if Playboy used a screen capture of Bai Ling from her stint as the body-guard android in "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow."

She is a beautiful lady and her pictorial includes full-frontal nudity. But the Star Wars feature in the magazine is very small and isn't very enlightening so I wouldn't go out of your way to add this issue to your collection.

Ewan MacGregor is interrogated in the August issue of Playboy. He talks about his experiences in Star Wars ["It's tedious and there's no soul in them."], giving up drinking, and what drives him as an actor. He collected Star Wars and GI Joe (Action Man in the UK) as a boy but now 'collects' motorcycles.

Apparently his uncle, Denis Lawson (Wedge), warned him about Star Wars and tried to dissuade him when he auditioned for the role of Obi-Wan:

To this day [Lawson] receives fan mail and gets asked to sign books written about him, all from having a small part in Star Wars. He finds the whole thing ******* ridiculous, so after his experience he was against it. He asked, "Would you like a career after you're 30?"

Kinda funny, ol' Wedge blaming Star Wars for losing work. He just had a small role and is probably only well known among the fanatics. I can see Hamill or Fisher making a comment like this but not someone who played practically a walk-on role.

So all that and more, plus a wonderous Diora Baird (Guess Jeans model) photo spread in the August ish.

It's obvious what she did and why she did it. Not that she needed a gimmick to get into Playboy, but her "sell" to them was more relevant if she could say that she was going to be in the next Star Wars film. It's more than likely that she already knew that she was cut, but Playboy didn't have anyway to find that out or any reason to ask about it. So everybody wins. She gets a spread in the magazine, Playboy gets to "tie" an issue to a hot relevant subject (Star Wars), and we all get to see her naked. Lucas most likely knew the scam that she pulled on Hef but was compelled to say something lest he look like a prudish jerk or something.

I'm not saying it from the standpoint that I'm asking "how could he not want to be in SW" . I'm saying that nobody knew who the **** Denny was in the first place, and nobody has since then because he hasn't done anything that the general public has noticed. More importantly, the general public didn't even notice him DURING the OT's release days, at least not even 1/10th the level of Alec or Harrison. Sure, the diehards know of him but that's it. I can understand it from Mark Hamill because "everyone" knows Luke Skywalker so he's typecast in that role . . . go ask 100 people on the street who Wedge was, or even show them a pic and they'll say WTF are you talking about ? ;)

Kinda funny, ol' Wedge blaming Star Wars for losing work. He just had a small role and is probably only well known among the fanatics. I can see Hamill or Fisher making a comment like this but not someone who played practically a walk-on role.
He should take the advice Jimmy Doohan got from his Dentist: " You're going to be Scotty long after you are dead, Jimmy, you might as well enjoy it." And as Scotty later stated- "and since then it's been lovely."

Wedge can sit back and get paid all kinds of money just to show up at cons and such. Beats landscaping.

Yes, and at what the autographs go for at the cons, some of those actors are making a pretty decent living for scrawling their signature on a photo, or toy. I wish I could get paid to sit at a table for a weekend, and make money to sign my name. :greedy:

When the residual checks stop flowing in or the career's in the crapper, the stars will hit the con circuit.

Don't forget about Shatner pumping out Star Trek books although he was salty towards ST fans.

The absolute WORST person with the biggest ego is richard hatch! I would love to pee on this guy he's such a jerk! So full of himself for being in a 24 episode cheesy space fantasy and when he signs books he charges $25 for a stupid stamp that he signs and numbers (I do not have his books or his autograph, I'd rather buy crack on the corner than give my money to this a-hole, but my friend is a huge collector of first edition hardcover books and he loves to get them signed) and then he totally snuffs ya! I fart in your general direction rh!

hehe

Try it out. Find a nice corner on a Saturday morning and set up shop. Make some ridiculous claim and see if people buy it. Don't charge the first time out, just gauge the response.:D

I wish I had to more hands. I'd give those ti***es 4 thumbs down.
Totally. She's quite a fugly piece o' work, ain't she? This issue changed my opinion of "T**ies are t**ies". After seeing those...things I realized they're not.

Was Richard Hatch, Starbuck or am I thinking of someone else? The name rings a bell, but I could care less about him.

I bought the issue, but I can't really say that she had a great body, but then I don't her Playgirl knocking at my door asking for me to pose for them either.

You guys, please tone down the smutty talk, this thread is in dangerous peril as it is.
