Was doing my weekly check of the local toy/collectors shops (actually seeking out first signs of the second wave of Titaniums) when I passed a chain toy store I'd been in once before, but had never stocked anything interesting, until now. There was a big SW display in the window so I thought, hell, might have something, and they did, a Revell display, cardboard display board thing with all the models inside and free posters and stuff.
They'd got the lot (except the USA exclusive die-cast), Anakin and Obi-Wans Jedi Starfighters, ARC-170, Droid Tri-Fighter, AT-RT and...the one I'd been waiting for, the Republic Star Destroyer. I was so excited, I almost bought the lot, but while I have a very understanding g/f, we've only lived together since September, and although shes seen the stuff I collect, and allowed (the cheek!) me to bring a v.small portion of my collection of mini-ships with us to France, I thought turning our living room into a Clone Wars back-lot wouldn't be so smart...yet :D
So I just went with the Venator for the moment, but I'll certainly get Obi-Wans fighter, and the ARC170. So, just got it home, and its HUGE! (last model I bought was the Sulaco from ALIENS) and the detail is fantastic, much better than the pics we've seen so far. I'm a little worred my building skills are going to be upto it, and there doesn't appear to be a stand either, which is a bit worrying, and I haven't thought about painting it yet, I'll spend months buidling up the courage to do that.
Also pleased with the price, €24.90. The other kits were all about €13 or so.
Anyway, thought I'd relay the good news, Sicqnus, the store was called La Grande Recre, should you be wanting to seek this out. As much as I love the ease of buying stuff off the net and getting stuff from Japan and the US, you can't beat that feeling of finding something in a store, I miss those days of hunting packs of MM's! :)
I'll get some pics when theres something to see.

Yes Found ! Thanks Andy. :D
...Wet ma pants !
I ran asap to one of the biggest "La Grande Récré" store of my area wich is located at only 5 minutes from home.
The StarWars displays were all there : 3,3/4" (including Obi's starfighter, Barc speeders, Bogas, Magna droids, Red guards, Grievous with four sabers, etc...) ; the Lego display (ARC-170 fighter, new Tie fighter, Juggernaut, Wookie catamaran, etc...), the Force Battlers, Kids sabers and maybe other things I didn't noticed.
Finally the Revell display was there, poor victim, just in front of me...
I took one of each (except the AT-RT wich I do not like) and two Venator Destroyers (huge!).
I talked a few minutes with the store manager. He said "We got the display furnitures at 11.30am and now (17.30pm) 1/3 of all the stock is already gone : we're in trouble !".
The "easykits" are very well done, simple, with instructions. Very easy to assemble. The only wrong point : the parts are painted on sprues then you will have little marks where you cut them off the sprues.
Curious, the figures are made of very soft plastic... They are not very well painted but nothing serious. BTW, the ARC-170 fighter have pilots that are an exact match for AF figs - 1/72è - (but the starship is far bigger).
The Venator is amazing. It will be a long fight to make it good looking. All the side panels are incredibly detailed. All the parts are very well moulded. It is very impressive !
I was from a few hours to order them from Germany (StarBase8.de) where they are a little cheaper but finally if you count the shipping cost it is equal to take them here. Thanks Andy for the head up !
Now they are great display pieces but can be improved a little. I worked yesterday evening on the Obi-Wan's starfighter. I made some painting/paneling and weathering but I used paintbombs instead of my airbrush to go faster. The result is quite good. I'm happy with this. It turns out to be something good.

Good stuff, looks like light-years away from the old AMT-ERTL snap kits...
I have been in the past a very serious model builder- seeing as I do not collect 3 3/4 vehicles, these just might tempt me, thanks for posting the pics Sicgnus!!!

Glad you found them ok sicqnus, I gather from reading various other forums that these kits first started shipping to retailers in europe on the 25th, Monday, so I think we're among the first to get these (for a change!).
I finished the Venator last night, much easier than I'd feared, and the quality of the kit is top notch, everything fitted perfectly, and the detailing is great. Its huge and I love it, even un-painted its going to be one of my favourite things I put on display, right up there with my AF Republic Gunship and AA NX-01.
I'm really going to take my time with painting, and try and learn some things off modellers forums and get some tips, I know plenty about colouring with pantone markers and good old fashioned paper, but painting a 3D object, no clue!
Love the weathering you've added to the fighter, how do you do that? Going to pick up that Obi-fighter, wish I had when I got the star destroyer. Will post some pics of the finished model in a bit...

Thats a great looking ship AndyW. I'm finishing up overhauling an AMT AT-AT Walker now. I might pick up one of these for my next project! Now where to find them in the U.S.

Thanks jayspawn, its even better 'in the plastic'.
You may struggle with getting them through conventional methods, theres some sort of issue that prevents Revell from selling them in the US. I'd go for the store that Sicqnus mentioned in his last post, however, if people are stuck we can sort something out about getting them over to other mm forum'ers.
Really really want to paint this thing now, must be patient and not rush into it!

Great pics of the cruiser Andy. It looks amazing !
I think I will begin with a matt light grey applied as a thin layer (paintbomb). The interior of the ship will be painted flat black.
To detail the side trenchs, I will paint them in grey and brush them with Terebhentine oil mixed with dark grey paint "The juice" (with a nylon brush). Use a kleenex to remove what's left on the structures and let the juice in all the hollowed structures. Do this as many times as needed. The panels will be made with stencils or cellotape (scotch). You'll have to cover everything except the panels you want to paint with a darker or lighter color (here again, a paintbomb can be fine, you will easily find "taggers" shops in Marseille where you can buy very good Matt paint for approx 15 Euros/six cans).
If you live in US, don't forget these kits will be available in USA except the ARC-170 and the AT-RT wich are European exclusives. Then if you want to order overseas, no need to purchase all the line from retailers. :nerv:
They are also available at CometMiniatures in UK :

Finished pics of the starfighter looks great, didn't know you were such a good modeller. (Did you ever paint those Medical Frigates you good from somewhere?)
One question though, when you say 'paintbomb' what do you mean exactly?
Looking forward to seeing what you do with the ARC-170.
My plan for the Venator is similar to yours, was planning to spray the whole thing in a light grey, trench detail and engine pods darker, then follow the same colours as the picture on the box and the drawing from ROTS Incredible Cross-sections. Am toying with the idea of buying another kit and having that with green markings instead of red, not sure why, just think it'll look cool. Firstly though, I'm going after the fighters, just hoping I can weather mine as good as yours look.

Sicq, that's great work! What amazes me most is how plasticky it looked on the trees (and in the finished photo on SW.com earlier this month) yet so nicely weathered on your version, it's like looking at 2 totally separate products.

Building SW based kits is a lot of fun thanks to the weathering process- you are basically doing exactly what the folks who built the props for the movie did, although usually on a smaller scale(weathering is really fun, to boot, once you sort of know what you're doing it's like making stew, just keep doing stuff 'til it suits you) - looks great Sigq, just heavy enough- I like the "directional" effects especially, really nice
And nice job on the Venator so far, AndyW, from the lack of glue cmears, clothespegs and elastic bands, it looks like the mold is really really nice- make sure to post some pics when you get around to finishing it :beard:

Will keep you lot updated on the painting, don't worry. Just went out to a model shop which is about 15 seconds from my front door, they had some grey spray paints but I couldn't decide on a shade, and they all looked like they had too much 'silver' colour in them.

I came yesterday afternoon to the "La Grande Récré" where I bought the kits, they are almost sold out (!!!). A friend of Cabour who is a professional modeler got one of the Revell France rep on the phone and he has been told they are sold out of the kits they've received for the french market :D
Hé, hé... Here today, gone tomorrow. :stupid:
I just began the Venator and I'm surprised it's not to hard. I remember I had real nightmares with the Fine Molds kits.
The hull has been spraypainted with an acrylic flat light grey. Interior is painted with glycero flat black. I will add hull panels today after this very first weathering job. The old pinkish red has been made using Humbrol 153 (flat red) model paint (similar as the one on the pic) with terebenthine oil to make a dilution.
The weathering have been made using a "juice" and a nylon brush (terebenthine oil + Humbrol 053 Gunmetal and Flat black). As the paint used for the juice is glycero it penetrates well the acrylic thanks to the terebenthine.

Same here, all the Venators were gone, most of the ARC's too, infact it was only the Anakin Kit they had in any large numbers. Glad these are selling well though, just hope they get more in. Going to give in and pop down this afternoon before they sell out of Obi-Wans
By Paintbomb, I mean aerosol paint.
Cheers, thought it was something like that. My plan is similar to yours (taking tips from you, hope you don't mind), a light grey spray is first on my list, then I'm going to use the little pots of paint you get with the kit, the red and the two greys for detailing. May get a yellow and blue so I can add other little details.
How come you dilute your paint with terebenthine oil?Does it thing out the paint and make it look better? Just curious, expect lots of questions from me :D

Just to update, didn't get chance yesterday to go in and get one, but was passing by today, peeked through the window (France closes on a Sunday unlike home :D) and there were only two Obi-Fighters and not much else. Again, plenty of Anakin kits.
Getting one tomorrow for sure, going to make the time!

Hi Andy, my store had yesterday maybe 8 or 9 Obi JSF left. Only 3 Anakin JSF, plenty of AT-RT (as expensive as the ARC-170...) maybe 4 or 5 ARC-170 and two Venators. All the TRi-Droïds are gone (???). Half of the 3,3/4" is gone but they received Legos (1 Juggernaut and approx 15 ARC-170). When you'll go to the shop they could show a Lego promo video. My store had it and it was very fun ! We see for example a space battle with an ARC-170 attacked by Buzz Droïds, the pilot opens the canopy and uses an anti-mosquitos spray.
I began to make the panels on the cruiser's hull. It's long and boring but fortunately half of the work has been done yet. I still have to make more medium grey very little panels everywhere. I will use kilometers of scotch (in this case a yellow TESA tape). I don't know yet how I will manage to do the red stripes on the back of the ship. I think I will use a very thin pencil to make marks on the hull and then use the tape to cover the parts I doesn't have to paint. I will try to see what are the dimensions of the stripes on the instructions.
Andy, I will try to make more pics to make a "step by step" in pictures. I use Terebenthine oil, Acetone, White spirit to make the dilutions. The Acetone is amazing to make the weathering effects but beware ! It's very harmful and dangerous to breathe. :ermm: Most of the details are painted by hands with a thin brush and model paint (Humbrol or Revell are available everywhere).

Thankyou, that will be most appreciated. I'm going to hunt some paints tomorrow after I buy the kit so thanks for the pointers.
The Venator looks great so far, and exactly what I intend for mine, not too worried about painting that I don't think, ever since I finished it I've been thinking about how to do it and I've got a good plan.
Bit worried about getting the weathering right on Obi's fighter though. I'll get the kit and see what to do first I think.

Went to the store fairly early, just after opening time. Got my Obi-Fighter, theres now just one left. All the ARC's are gone, as are most of the Tri-fighters, and as I said yesterday, the Venators too. Plenty of Anakin fighters, and those little chicken walker AT-RT's.
Going to pop it all together this afternoon and then paint and glue it at a later date (when I have learnt the teachings of master sicqnus!). Will post some pics later. In the meantime, defrosting the fridge :D

Hi Andy, here are a few pics of the work in progress on the Venator kit from Revell.
First pic : painting the engines with a dilution of flat black and terebenthine oil (first layer). All the parts have been previously spraypainted (on the sprues) with a flat light grey.
Second pic : painting the flaps by hand with a thin brush and model paint (a Revell medium grey).
Third pic : The yellow tape used for masking can be found everywhere for cheap. I made holes in the engines thrusters for the blue Leds I will add later. I'll use the tap parts pictured to make an effect in the engines.
Fourth pic : The lower hull masked, just before painting.
Fifth pic : Preparing the masks for the underside rear stripes.
sicqnus
05-03-2005, 02:06 PM
First pic : The red stripes are done, 'had to remove the tape now.
Second pic : Using Acetone (very soft touchs) to make red stripes weathering effects.
Third pic : Making the "juice", a little bit of terebenthine oil and a drip or two of flat black (Revell model paint).
Fourth pic : Still painting a few more details.
Fifth pic : I use grips to stick the elements. That maintains the elements during drying.

Most of the work has been done. I still have a few details to paint and all the work on the engines to do. Nothing has been glued yet because I have to install the electronics to light the reactors. The decals will be added later and I think I will use matt varnish (sprayed on) at the end.

Sicqnus, you are THE man. Thankyou, the pictures alone have helped more than anything, just giving me ideas about how to go about things. I'm going to need much more stuff than I've currently got. 1.Fine paintbrushes 2.Masking tape, a LOT more masking tape.
I'm going to start tomorrow on the Venator I think, I built my Obi-fighter yesterday (very happy with it, looks great sitting atop our dvd player) and I'm happy with how that looks for the moment. When my skills grow I'll attempt the weathered look you did, but for the moment I'll leave it. The Venator though, that I must start, its sitting here on display looking all plastic like. I should at least start something and take it slow!
Thanks for including the Medical Frigates in the picture, they look great! I should have ordered some when you posted about them back in '03!
My last question I promise...terebenthine oil, where would I get that?
sicqnus
05-03-2005, 03:09 PM
Anywhere, any supermarket would have 1 liter bottle (or maybe 1,5 liter ?) for approx 1,50 Euros. It's a product used to clean the brushes too (like the white spirit) in any work with oil or glycero paint (Acrylic will be cleaned by water). I bought my last bottle in a Super U store. Acetone is pretty easy to find for the same price in the same stores (Carrefour, Auchan, Castorama, Leroy-Merlin, etc..).
AndyW
05-04-2005, 09:44 AM
Couldn't see any in Monoprix just now, but its quite a small one. Theres a castorama a bit of a walk away, its a bit hot at the moment, wanted to come home for a drink :)
Got some spray paint, some tamiya aircraft paint, light grey, satin finish. Looks good on the model, not a huge amount different from the plastic shade wise, but the finish make it so much better. Only prob is I got a bit excited on the command tower and one side is a little over painted, its drying now and is starting to look better.
You dilute your enamel paints, does this give a better finish then? Is it unwise to use enamel paints straight out the tin?
sicqnus
05-05-2005, 04:58 AM
Yes I prefer to dilute the enamel paint with terebenthine oil. I use also undiluted paint when I'm painting the small details, but sometimes it's easier to work when the paint is not too thick.
When you paint part with spraypaint, stay at 25 - 30 centimeters (12inches) from the parts to paint to avoid dripping. Don't be too close. Several thin layers are better then a thick one.

AndyW- a quick hint- you can usually use Oven Cleaner (do this outside) to remove unwanted paint (reading about your enthusiastically overdone superstructure made me think of this)
Just on case you DO overdo something, I figured I would mention it....
We still only have re-releases of the AMT stuff around here, I am pretty sure I'm gonna need at least one of these kits :beard:

Thanks for that, once it dried however, it looks much better. And I've since gone over that part in a lighter grey and it looks pretty good. Been doing detail painting today, looks fairly good for my first attempt, and from a distance looks really good. I'm not following the painting instructions, just going with what feels right at the moment. On thing I'm stuggling with is the detailing on the tower, its really really fiddly! Enjoying it though, and I suppose thats the main thing.

I'm back from ROTS !
I arrived pretty soon at the theater and god there were very looooooong queues in front of the ROTS screening rooms doors ! I waited 25 minutes and I had a very good place. Some people were waiting for 2 hours... (all the tickets were pre-sold and the two rooms were full).
I don't want to unveil too much but here are a few things :
The opening space battle is awesome (too short for me even if I saw it two times, the theater technicians have managed to cut the film strip after twenty minutes... Very first time it occurs to me and it must be for the ROTS premiere ! After twenty more minutes in front of a blank screen the film have restarted ...from the beginning !). Hell yeah ! Applauses, cries, whistles, a guy in a Darh Maul costume fighting another guy with a blue lightsaber, someone shouting he's selling his Audi TT spider, etc... KINDA BROTHEL !
There were applauses several times during the movie and long ones at the end. Even if we arrived at 23h30pm and were gone after 4.00am (...).
The Venator cruiser is the star of ROTS. We saw plenty of it during the movie including amazing shots of landed Venators in the Coruscant military spaceports.
R2D2 have a lot of action and even several fight scenes : Kick your dog and buy an astromech to keep your house !
Anakin flies two JSF one yellow and one green and Obi-Wan flies two JSF, one burgundy and one petrol-blue. They also flew two half saucer small fighters with a Ep2 JSF cockpit (when on coruscant). The YT-1300 (Falcon) cargo makes a very short cameo and is tiny on screen (it flies off a Coruscant dock).
Padmé's ship is a great looking flying wing. From above it looks like a smaller senatorial flying wing from Ep2 but with two jumbo jet reactors under the wings : beautiful !
Sometimes I have very bad dreams : "Action Fleet ! Yes master. RIIIIIIIIIISE !". It could have been a very cute AF.
Lots of Republic Gunships are used during the movie, even on Coruscant.
YES ! WE SEE THE BLOCKADE RUNNER'S UNDERSIDE LOADING BAY IN ACTION WHEN OBI-WAN COMES ABOARD WITH THE STOLEN GRIEVOUS "BATWING" FIGHTER.
PLO KOON'S FIGHTER is an Ep2 starfighter covered with white and blue stripes.
The AT-RTs and Tri-fighters have very brief shots.
One of the last shots shows a fleet of Imperial destroyers (not Star Destroyers but Venators) painted all medium grey (no more burgundy red republican colors, no more jedi fleet logos). They are near the skelton of the Death Star 1. One of them have Tarkin, Vader & Palpatine aboard.
All the fights are better, even if I thought the last fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan is a little too long. The end of the fight and the dialogues are very cool. It works fine ! All the lightsabers duels are far better and faster than in the previous movies.
Scary for children : Anakin's cremation is shown from the beginning to the end (with cries).
No Qui-Gon, despite what the rumor said. He is only mentionned by Yoda at the end.
I was anxious about Hayden Christensen's acting but he is much better than in Episode 2. The love affair between he and Padme is cool, nothing to do with the bad acting in Ep2.
I still think the character of Grievous is crap. I don't like his manga look (with his Sand Skiff rudder ears...) and his "goose walking". He is coughing all the time (don't know why... useless) but his "barbecue" death is funny.
Well there's a lot to see and I'm sure you will love the movie which is the better of the three "prelogic-era" movies. There is no competition.
I must add, despite what the rumor said (once again) the movie was very well received in Cannes. Most of the critics, even the intelectual ones (you know, those who sees a Lars Von Trier movie and then suicides themselves thereafter...) liked the movie. Another american movie "Broken Flowers" had very good reviews too (starring Tilda Shelton and Bill Murray in a very Lost In Translation-esque movie). I need to see this one.

I've got a few more hours to wait yet, seeing it at 21:50 tonight, there was no where last night that I could find showing it in English sadly.
Bit worried about getting tickets, you can't pre-book them for some mindless reason.

Awesome, just awesome. Don't know what else to say, the whole film was just a blur.
There were only a very few things I didn't like, and they were fairly minor. I think the film rounds off the trilogy very nicely.
Best bit: The opening shots of the battle. Just brilliant, got to be some of the best space battles since the large fleet battles in DS9 during the Dominion war. So many ships, those Venators kick ***.
Need to see it again!

I finished the ARC-170 kit today. Still a few details to fix but it's 95% done.
I just had to make a hole in the canopy to add an R2 unit (from Fine Molds X-wing spare parts) and I've added a few elements in the cokpit (wich is almost empty, three pilots, three seats and that's all...) like the pilot console. Overall, a good looking, easy to build snapkit.

Dang, you're a madman, that looks awesome! The overall weathering is my favorite part, there's nothing so much bolder than the other that it might draw attention to itself, yet it's also not uniform and bland. Great work!

I've been trying to track thesee kits here in the USA with no luck so I might as well order them. 1 or 2 anyways for now. Does anybody happen to know the UK pound/ US dollar exchange rate at the time?

Today's exchange rate is 1 US Dollar to 1.75779 GB Pound, which means that 1 dollar is worth a whopping 0.57 pounds. :( http://www.xe.com/ucc/
