View Full Version : Is it just me, or is DualDisc a new way to rip us off?

DualDisc is a supposedly revolutionary new technology that allows (and please contain your excitement here) an album in CD format on one side and in DVD-Audio format on the other!!

A couple of months ago, the studios re-released several albums in this format. I thought, "Whoop-dee-freakin'-doo!! This won't last long." Like most people, I don't use DVD-Audio, don't normally even play the pack-in freebie DVDs that come with some albums, and (as much as I love to listen to music) probably wouldn't notice a whole lot of difference in the sound quality.

But looking around online, it looks like two of the three CD's coming out in the next month that I've been looking forward to (Bruce Springsteen and Joe Perry) are being released only on DualDisc. And it looks like a couple of other high-profile new releases that I don't care about are also only available on DualDisc.

Call me crazy, but I hate flippers anyway. I'm careful with all my CD's and DVD's, but I like knowing that it won't be the end of the world if I accidentally touch one side of the disc.

More insidious, though, it looks to me like this is a way for the record industry ripoff artists to jack the prices up again. The prices for new CD's have dropped pretty dramatically over the past year or so, but these things cost what CD's used to cost. And it looks like, with the higher profile albums coming out only in this format, that it's a situation where a year or so from now they'll say, "Hey, folks bought these albums, so maybe we should do only DualDisc from now on!"

Man, I'm old fashioned. I like to actually have the physical CD with the original artwork and such, and I don't believe in downloading tracks (unless it's a case like the ROTS soundtrack, where I plan to buy it anyway). But this is making it really difficult to justify spending money on something that I'm only going to half use.

Too bad the industry can't just go forward with DVD-A and say goodbye to CD and SACD.

I haven't really seen a price hike with the Dual Disc.

But yes, I too hate flipping cds/DVDs over.

Maybe they're trying to make up for "lost profits" from people downloading music from each other

I'm not a fan of flippers AT ALL so on that principle alone I don't need these.

I just bought the new Springsteen and paiud 11 bucks for it, so I'm not worried abot overpaying.

I do like the idea of 5 video tracks on the new Boss disc, however I would rather get a pack in DVD instead. :)

the new Judas Priest was a dual disc. and what a piece of junk this was. i couldn't even play the one side on my laptop, so i could copy it to my hard drive. that just goes to show you how bad it is. or maybe it;s my laptop...no, it's the disc.

Uggh, sorry to hear that darko666.. likely could be the player itself- my buddy has a PS2 that won't play certain cheaply made films (think 2.88 bin at WM) whereas my unit will even play burns with no problems, I don't know what the difference is, technically, but there obviously is one....

And my condolences were for you having paid money for that new Priest disc, I have not heard much but all's I can say is "sad wings of destiny" it AIN'T :beard:

And what the hell is this goofy curved shape they are going with ? I opened my new disc last night and whattyaknow, the jewel case is busted at the tip of the hinge, so that's shot and because this is a special style it's not like I can just swap it out with a new jewel case (without bending up the curved half of the insert).

Yeah i am not a fan either. I dont like the flip deal. I think that they should at least give us the option. I would have bought the regular version for the Springsteen and the Priest. I am glad they are giving us the option with the NIN.

Well, the busted jewel case doesn't bother me anymore because when I took out the insert, it's not permanently curved like that - it's slit halfway i so it curves but it fits nicely in a regular tray, too. :)

Still not a fan of the flipper disc, though.

Did they do away with this nonsense, or what ?

I don't buy CDs anymore except for the few bands I "collect"...but I can't recall seeing DualDiscs anywhere lately.

Yeah, it seems to have died...thankfully.

I recently read an article about it being the CD's 25th anniversary and they briefly spoke about the "dual disc" phenomenon which went the way of the LP and I think blue ray is going to follow!
