How far up the list of all time domestic grossing movies will ROTS go to?

Right now after a week it's sitting at number 73.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm

My guess is that it will fall somewhere between 10-15 but be unable to crack the Top 10.

If I had to pick one number I'd pick #13.

<yes, I realize that this isn't adjusted for inflation>

Lucas himself predicted about $250 million and he's been pretty accurate so far with Ep1 and 2. So I'll go with that.

It's up to about $230 million right now, but I think it will lose steam pretty quickly after Memorial Day weekend. I'd be surprised if it breaks $350 million.

After the Memorial Day weekend it looks like ROTS ended up in the #26 spot on the all time domestic list. It looks like it'll easily carry into the low teens. Perhaps we'll see that in the next 2 weeks.

DarthQuack
05-31-2005, 08:23 PM
I would say that ROTS will possibly keep the number one spot going into this next weekend, but after that it looks like movies like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Cinderella Man, Batman Begins will begin to suck the life out of it, but I still think top 10 easily.

Exhaust Port

If it can survive the month of June I think War of the Worlds in July will be the final nail in the domestic-take coffin.

Exhaust Port

ROTS has slid from #1. We'll probably see the earnings drop quite a bit over the next week or so. Right now it's sitting at #17 on the domestic list and will easily pass into the low teens.

Hard to believe that ATOC is #18 on the list. Even with inflation ROTS has passed it up pretty quickly.

edit: Looking at the "Adjusted for Inflation" list ATOC is #80 and ROTS sits at #90 for now. Another $30 million to pass it up which shouldn't be too hard.

Holy begonias, it's only been out four weeks and it's the #13 movie ever! That's nuts! Batman has begun to steal some serious cash (nowhere near as much as ROTS did opening weekend, though), but I think that ROTS will still get its fair share for a while. I still plan on seeing it at least 4 more times.

As much as I'd like to see it beat Titanic, they'll never let it play in theaters for 3 months straight. Heck, most of the theaters by me have already chopped it down to only 4 showings a day, so I hope it'll last at least another week so I can catch a matinee on my day off next week. Doesn't look like Batman is living up to the hype in terms of take-in, but that could change this weekend. About the only good thing I've seen for ROTS is that they're still playing tv ads for it - hopefully it'll get a second wind to carry it to the end of July, although Fantastic Four may kill it.

Thanks to Tom Cruise corrupting Katie Holmes with his Scientology cult and prancing around like an idiot, and now this phony engagement, I think War of the Worlds is gonna crash and burn at the box office. I think everyone is so sick of Tom Cruise at this point that the (over)hype for this movie is gonna work in reverse. It may be only the super hero movies that take a chunk of the SW audience.

Apparently moviegoers love Yoda more than Jesus and it beat Passion of the Christ for #9. :D Only $3 million more to take out Spidey (2) then $4 million more after that to smack down those pesky Hobbits.

I doubt it will reach number 6, though, as there's a $30 million gap between 6 and 7.

I think it can rake in $5 million more, Star Wars has a strong fanbase and plenty of other people know what it is too. Any word if last weeks promotion (buy 3 tickets get 1 free) did give it a bump in its intake? I know it made my family and i pass over War of the Worlds to see Star Wars again. Plus i still plan on watching it at least two more times at the dollar theaters.

princethomas

I think its got about 20 million left in the tank. It should play out pretty well through august. It would be awesome to organize some sort of huge fan day. Where we all go see it one last time. See if we could bump it up for one last big day.

Here's a link to the all-time box office numbers. I think SW will surpass LOTR: ROTK which is only 7 million away but like JJL said Spidey is way in front of it. It made another 2.6 million this weekend but lost 2 spots so 3 more weekends similar to this one and we're golden.

Some of those numbers seem a little...... well for example E I picks up $111 million and that was all the way back in 1999! Heck even AOTC picks up an additional 32 mill and that was only three years ago! WOW!!!!

I recall paying about $5.50 for AOTC tix yet now for ROTS I'm paying about $8 (although I get in for $6.50 with the military ID :p) so that's about a $2.50 difference in tix that could make up for the 32 mil.

With those numbers yes I can see that, in my neck of the woods I think its gone up maybe a dollar since AOTC. Although I think they calculated the tickets to an average price of $6.40... I'd like to know where you can see a movie for $6.40, heck where can you see it for under $6.40??? (I'm talking about something other then daytime viewings.)

Exhaust Port
07-12-2005, 08:17 AM
Because the industry loves to show increasing success with ever new movie. I agree that a "number of tickets sold" would be a much better measuring tool but I doubt we'll ever see it.

07-13-2005, 01:46 AM
Actually they should base it on percentage of the public who went and saw it . . . Gone With the Wind is the big leader for inflation and therefore tickets sold but the population was smaller then, too - so it would have an even bigger lead per capita, I think ?

Well, according to the link you have it has passed Spiderman 2 by about $300,000. That $30 million leap from 7 to 6 is almost impossible for it to surpass and I bet it'll be tough for many movies to make it that high.
