View Full Version : These are boring times for me; when I will be tempted to spend on nothing.

I wanted to start a thread about anything from Hasbro Star Wars that I might get excited about.

Comic Con was a total dud. Really, I have to wait for Pre-Toy Fair (isn't that in September?) to see if there will be anything I'm interested in.

We made a Top 50 list of figures from TPM, AOTC, ANH, ESB, and ROTJ that many of us on this site would have liked to have seen. Almost none of it is getting done to our knowledge as of yet.

(Cliegg Lars, Herme Odle, a good General Veers, Luke Endor, all topped the list).

As of now, I know the first 6 figures (Carkoon Wave) coming next year, and with the undetermined Hoth Wave to follow, and only 6 Characters from a ROTS Coruscant Wave coming after that, I can't see many of the never-made-before figures I want being released. I see resculpts and recards or else main characters will not be out there. The Coruscant Wave would need like 10 figures in it to adequately represent Obi-Wan, Anakin, Grievous, etc. and still add new figures I don't have anything close to (Padme with her hair in the buns, the Fireship Pilot) and keep it interesting - as I would NOT be buying the Anakin and Obi-Wan figures (I already have bought 10-12 of them so I have them for each scene I want to make).

Right now, I barely want ANY Hasbro figures.

12 More ROTS have been announced, and I'm only buying 4:

Plo Koon (holo)
501st (all though I'm buying like 12 or more of these guys)

I'm a little more optomistic, Tycho. I think there will be a nicer mix of new costumes for main characters, new and improved army builders, and previously unmade background characters in this line than you do - and I think you'll want more of them than you think you will. :)

In case you didn't see it in the other thread, I'm throwing down the gauntlet: I challenge you* to buy less than 20 different figures out of the prospective 56 Saga2 figures planned for 2006! It's on now......... ;)

*I, of course, reserve the right to remove this challenge, to avoid looking foolish, should the entire list of upcoming figures be released - and suck. :D

Hasbro does not listen to us. They are smart. "We only need to keep them from escaping." They only need to keep us interested in the figures. Think about this: they have that licensed until 2018. That is long enough to make many of the never before sculpted figures we want. I believe Hasbro knows this. Therefore, they must just keep the lines half-way interesting until the license is out. Why? Because if they gave us all of those figures that we wanted, I truly feel that they would run out of figures to sculpt. At least, they would run out of figures that parents and kids could identify. Then the line would die. I agree with you, comic con was "zzzzzz" time from what I've read.

2006 Product Tycho WILL Buy - updated July 29, 2005:

1) Leia Boussh no thanks. A better Deluxe Han Carb would change that.
2) Han carbonite nope. You can't completely enclose him in a deluxe carb block
3) #1 Bib Fortuna - this might be useful for an EU scene.
4) Barada repaint I bought all the Baradas I'd need in 1999.
5) Boba Fett - maybe. I have an extra #300. If I use that, something for Jaster Mureel might work out.
6) Chewie in chains - not likely. I have an extra Chewie figure already

Hasbro's batting 1 for 6 with me so far.

+ $5.32................... - $ 26.6 (money I am not spending on at least 1 of their products)

Remember what I said about you being an unusual collectors Tycho? Well, I think this line is Hasbro's way of confirming that. :p I think Hasbro is stupid for staying to this rigid "waves based on scenes" thing, thus forcing figures to wait for the last members of the crew before shipping, but other than that this seems like a great start. Boushh is a 9 year old mold, the face is based off Monkey-face Leia and while the figure is actually fairly decent, it's definitely no longer "good enough". Han Carbonite is the same age, and that figure was nothing to write home about when it first came out beyond the quality of the block itself. Bib Fortuna is a decent POTF2 figure but hardly accurate and he suffers from split-robe syndrome, so I welcome a new version that's more accurate. If Chewie in Chains is something like the POTJ Mechanic Chewie body, it'll be a very welcome update to a VERY silly POTF2 figure. People will apparently never stop buying Boba Fetts so it's smart of Hasbro to release them. And fans like aliens, so Barada will do well too. I think you're just too rigid in your collecting mindset to accept that it's not 1995 anymore. :p

You say that now Tycho, but you will have empty curio cabinets and but these figures to fill them up

And here I thought this thread was another lament about not finding stuff. This is a dangerous time for me - overcome by frustration in not seeing any new figures since mid-May, and on top of that, stores have inexplicably raised prices. There's no point in checking stores any more, and I've lost interest in doing so anyway.

And then I hear that in California, where the toys are apparently so plentiful that collectors can yawn and ho-hum about Hasbro's character selection. Of course, this is California: where the streets are paved with ABS and PVC; and new cases of figures routinely wash up on shore; where stores' pegs runneth over with new assortments; and behind every Bratz playhouse and Tickle Me Elmo lies in wait someone's stash of glittering plastic swag; and every ocean breeze carries a faint wisp of new toy smell...

:frus: ;)

I dunno, I really like most of ROTS figures #56-68 (with the exception of the Wookiees). It's a nice way for Hasbro to save some money and churn out perfectly good figures that I, frankly, never thought we'd get. Now I don't have to buy another Geonosis War Room set to make Cat Miin or a yellow ROTS Passel Argente. I also love the first three new TSC figures. They are all updates on figures who sorely needed them. Even if there's not many completely new figures, the other kitbashed/repainted ones will be nice (I'm hoping). But also, if you choose not to buy many of the figures, that just saves money for the other things that you do want to get.

Hey JJ - $20 says Tycho can't do it.... :)

07-31-2005, 01:46 PM
I'll probably just get the Wookies for the final ROTS wave. And after that not much of anything sans Bib.

08-01-2005, 11:40 AM
And fans like aliens, so Barada will do well too.

I hope it is painted like the vintage Barada.

Can anyone tell me if any of the Wookies in ROTS wore shirts the ways the upcoming Wookie figures do? Don't remember Wookies wearing clothes and would like to pass on the figures.

I feel your pain. WIth the OTC collection, i only bought a handful of figures, just the new ones. I skipped all the repacks even if they had new paint jobs. This time around i assume i will do the same, juts buy the new figures and new sculpts, any re-packs with new paint jobs i can pass on. I dont mind much as it saves me money.

Every day I fall furthur and furthur down the "I could really give a crap less" path. Hasbro's supply problems over the last year or so (when it got reeeeeeal bad) has really disenchanted me on the whole "collecting" thing. There were so many OTC figures that I wanted and never so much as seen them at retail. And since I'm not big on the whole secondary market thing, I will more than likely never have the few figs Hasbro released that I actually wanted. It really sucks. It's sorta like ending a friendship by burning the proverbial bridge.

While the new offerings do look good and may be something I would like to have, I already know that I won't find them. It's pathetic that I have to prematurely concede like that.

08-01-2005, 01:45 PM
I have a friend who used to buy every figure and has just kind of given up. He was so disgusted with all of the rehashes and repaints in the OTC he passed on most of it. He only bought three or four of the ROTS figures (and had me pick them up for him).

He always bought a new character that had never been made before, but by the time ROTS rolled around he just kind of had enough.

Now he is going to buy just the occasional figure that he likes and is talking about getting rid of most of his collection and just keeping a few things he likes.

If he is getting out of collecting, I am sure there are a bunch of other die hards just like him getting out and I have real concerns about the viability of the line.

08-01-2005, 04:37 PM
I can't say I hate any of the figures coming out. I think all of the figures are going to be decent buys for me. The biggest problem is that it is too much with no pay off in sight. First we have 12 repaints. 12! That's four waves of nothing but repaints. The whole Xmas season! I don't see that going over well. Then at the end of the 12 we get a wave of resculpts and a few repaints. Not that they are bad or undeserved, but they are still resculpts. Sure the rumor list is flooded with great possiblities. Supposedly we will see the Tonika twins. But no confirmation of any new never before seen figures. If they want to keep the line alive new characters is a must. There are so many character I have far too many version of due to repacks and resculpts that I don't care how good the sculpt is I don't want another. The larger that list gets the less I will enjoy collecting.

I actually kept an eye out for that last time I watched it. Nope, not a single Wookiee is wearing a shirt, nor are there any black-furred ones. Save for Chewie, Tarfful, Merumeru (the one who leads the Wookiees when they all rage up), and Salporin (who I think is the one they based the Sneak Preview figure on), all the Wookiees have the armor style that is seen on the Wookiee Battle Bash figure (the one that comes in vanilla or chocolate).

I say these are boring times.. I could care less about the saga collection... I might even.. (dare I say it?? ) ...stop collecting? I see NOTHING that jumps out and says "DAMN! I HAVE to get that!!" How the hell does Hasbro intend to keep this around untill 2018?? I know for sure I wont be collecting that long. I can see by 2012 they are gonna have 100th Luke figures and the same for every other major character..
Sorry im in a bad mood! :crazed:

Its the truth tho. A.) The distribution problem is all over the place. Here in Detroit there isnt jack s**t, and I flew to California on vactaion and I check around a few places, and while they had more pegs, they had more peg warmers. Its just up to Hasbro and the retails to make sure they order/send out enough. B.) Hasbro really needs to take a look at their figure list that theyve done and see what sold well, what could possibly sell well with resculpt/retooling, and what really sucked, and should never be seen again or should be remade asap. Kudos to Hasbro for putting out a brand new Leia, Han, and Bib Fortuna. Also, you see their trying with Chewie and Barada. No word on Boba Fett yet, but I have soo many of him, it doesnt matter. You see tho that these figures look like their aimed at us collectors. Chewie w/ realistic metal chains? Thats def. aimed at us. Weve been asking for a new Leia Boushh, as well as a new Han Carbon (or at least I know I have) so they know what we want. Their not stupid. But they do wanna make the line run until 2018 (maybe not TSC, but SW in general) For every great thing or idea from hasbro, we get more of something f**ked up, but I think this is changing.

As for secondary characters and those odd balls fans like Tycho would love to have, I think Hasbro still isnt going to go balls out and give us figures like Hermie Odle and such in every wave like you would like. Its gonna be hit and miss with these guys, and I think well see them every once in a while. I do believe we have a better chance of seeing characters like Derlin in the Hoth wave, and Ackbar or Nein Nunb in the Endor wave (which btw, doesnt the battle of endor include Endor, DSII,and space?) and a new Tarkin in the DS wave. These are secondary characters but they didnt have 2-3 seconds of screen time, and that plays a big factor w/ Hasbro imo. Theyll do the secondary characters that actually played some significance to the SW films, (Moff Jerjerrod, Tarkin, Derlin, Reikan, etc.) and then theyll even do the characters that are favorites with fans (Tonnika sisters, Emperrors Dignaties, select Jabba's and Cantina's aliens) but Im willing to bet they wont dive right into aliens.

In '06, I think that were going to see a lot of resculpts, new sculpts, and great figures. Yes, the Luke's, Vader's, Han's, and Leia's are gonna be there, not to mention the Anakins, Obiwans, Palpatines, and various Jedi. But Ill take a newly sculpted Endor Luke, Leia and Han anyday. Those are sellers, the aliens are but they sell nowhere near that of Luke and Han. If your a core collector lover like me or Fluke Skywalker, I have a feeling we can get ready to be in our glories. If your a more scene building collector like Tycho, then you may have to wait a while to get that scene specific alien. Thats just my opionion, so dont go and rattle off a million reasons why Im wrong and the world is right.
