View Full Version : "It's working!" ... more stolen moments

The kids wanted to see a movie this weekend (at home), so it occurred to me that they hadn't seen ET yet. I hadn't seen it myself since...well, probably since I was close to their age. Scary.

But I found myself chuckling about halfway through the thing when ET gets his "phone" going out in the forest. What was funny was Elliot who starts exclaiming, "It's working! It's working!"

The similarity between that scene and little Opi Ani's nonsensical "Here, use this power source" podrace-starting scene in Episode I was uncanny. George sure can write, can't he?

Yeah, I really enjoyed that little nod to his friend Spielburg.

I prefer the ET's in the Senate myself.

I honestly don't think this has any correlation to ET. If it does, though, it's likely a nod to George's friend Steven. But, it's not like nobody's ever said that before. If he said, "Jar Jar phone home," well, that would've been different. ;)

I've noticed it also.
I chalk it up to coincidence.
No more, no less.

It's not a mere coincidence. Cue 'em both up and watch them before making a snap judgement like that trying to exonerate George from any "wrong doing." :whip:

Yes, it reminded me of Anakin, but I still think it's a coincidence.
It's too obscure to be a direct reference, IMO.

Kidhuman...lol. :D

I agree. It's working is such a widely used little phrase in the world that it would be difficult to say that he stole the line from ET. And I never noticed that the lines were the same. It has been a while since I have seen ET.

And had you bothered to watch ET before posting, you'd see that it isn't just the line itself, but the way it is delivered and the circumstances under which it happens. The line is a ripoff or homage depending upon how you choose to look at it.

I'm guessing your vote is for ripoff? :D

'cos "It functions!! It functions!!!" would be something a 9-year old would say.

Yer missin' the point. If any of all ya all would watch each clip side by side, you'd see the obvious. It's not just about the words.

Rocketboy said he noticed it just as you did, stillakid, but he thought it was coincidence and you dumped on him for making a "snap judgement to exonerate George" (thus making a "snap judgement" yourself ;) ).
