View Full Version : At a Titanium crossroads...

So, I finally procured an X-Wing Titanium from Wave 1 from England. I paid a bit for it, but now I have all of the commercially released Wal-Mart 3" Titanium ships- all 17 that is.

I see the 5-packs with same ships inside...

I know Hasbro is infamous for re-releases, and these ships are nigh the same as my old Galoob Die-Cast metal ones (and I had all of them loose)...

...so do I keep my new Titanium ships in package to display or do I open them and display them on their stands along with all of the loose versions I have of each of the old ones already? THAT is the question, and the packaging for them is pretty cool, admittedly...

Also, is Wave 4 (Royal Starship, Green Jedi Fighter, Wookie Flyer and Battle-Scarred Millennium Falcon) a Wal-Mart thing or will they be worldwide? If they're Wal-Mart, they may be the rarest of them all, since even on Ebay they average $10 a piece, and they're rarely auctioned. When's the scheduled release date for them?

On another note, I pre-ordered a case of Wave 5- Jedi Cruiser, "Treasure Hunt" TIE Fighter *Shudder*, etc.- for Jan. 2006 on EE. I'm willing to sell the extras I'll have to anyone here for my final cost + shipping. I recall someone wanted a fleet of the Jedi Cruisers, and I will supposedly have 3 extra...:lipsrseal

So, any advice on opening or closing? What do you guys do?

Lemme know :)

Hey Warstar, been off the forum for almost two months, travelling back to England for a trip and changing our internet provider meant I've had hassles left right and center.

Sorry you had to pay through the nose for your X-Wing, dare I ask how much you had to pay some scalper for the privledge? I picked up an X-Wing from the TRU I found them at back in August, as they were down to just one left. I haven't opened it yet just incase you or anyone else was after it, although there is another TRU that might have more. Anyway, you won't be needing it so I just got to check with JediGoofy as I remember he was the other person after it.

I paid a very reasonable 7.99, which is about $9 I think. Not great but pretty good to be able to pick it up off the shelf. Am going back tomorrow to pick up Slave One, the Falcon and the TIE so I can have a complete Wave 1.

I'm with you on the to open decision, I've always been an complete opener, as otherwise what is the point of owning them, but in the case of the Titaniums the packaging is so nice looking I almost wanted to keep them in!

You feel my pain with the packaging...this is good. I mean they even made every single Titanium package different for the vehicle it contains? How cool is that? Still haven't opened them- waiting for more opinions!

Otherwise, I paid a guy $23 US with shipping for the X-Wing- not too bad, mind you...I suppose. There was a glut on the X-Wings from everyone in the UK, so that drove the price down for a bit- which is good.

Ah thats not too bad a price, me grabbing it for you here and posting it to you wouldn't have worked out much cheaper. Let me know if you need anymore Wave 1's though. That goes for anyone else by the way too!

The packaging of these Titaniums hasn't been given the credit it deserves, I was shocked when I got some recently (a friend visited the US and picked a couple up for me), its not often that a box is so appealling that I consider NOT taking out the ship, that seems like madness to me. However, my big complaint is there is no way of getting them out without damaging the packaging itself. Although I'm sure that is no accident.

In the case of the Ultra's, that's DEFINITELY true. Not sure about the little guys though...

With the little ones you probably could, if you used a craft knife and were careful, but even then it wouldn't be perfect.

The gift set box is impossible.

Wave 4 is WM exclusive and is supposedly hitting stores now. I still haven't found wave 3 which makes me a saaaad panda. :(

As for opening the 3" line's packaging, unless you already have the vehicle from the Galoob days (in which case I'd say leave closed), you should open them and save the packaging - that's what I did. As for the 6" line, I haven't decided, I put them on layaway yesterday so I assume when I finally pay them off in a few weeks they'll be messed up packages no matter what, but they do look good in there and the x-wing photos you sent WS make me nervous.

Fret not, JT. Tonight at Wal-Mart I spotted a display being made for Star Wars outside of the toy section, I assume this is to entice people passing by but not through the toy aisle when the DVD comes out. I noticed they had a fresh stock of Wave 3 with this display including a lone TIE Bomber. So keep your eyes peeled, I'm sure more Wal-Marts will be doing this just like the Batman Begins figure displays.

I don't have any local WMs, they're all 15 miles or further and I don't drive, so I can't check often. My closest WM didn't have a display when I was there the other day, they're a pretty crappy WM though and rarely have those exclusives (since this line started, I've seen Titaniums there a total of 1 time).

I drive right past our local WM three days a week taking my 4 year old son to school so I have been stopping there on a routine basis "hunting".
Since it's first thing in the morning and the store is dead, I'm sure that by now I am on the list of people to keep the security cameras on since I always leave without buying anything.

If they did a better job of stocking their Titanium section it would save me a lot of time. It seems like some of you guys have stores that receive their Wave's of Titaniums much sooner that my store does. I wonder if there are cases of the Wave 4 stuff sitting in the back somewhere.

Also if someone is still in need of a Wave 3 5-pack, there is one left that I could get for them, it's been looking for a buyer for weeks.

I finally picked up the rest of Wave 1 from TRU, and bagged Wave 3 on ebay a few days ago. Wave 4 is appearing on ebay now, but prices seem a little high, will leave it a couple of weeks I think, unless I spot a good buy it now auction. I have Wave 5 on pre-order. All I need now is Wave 2, but I'm waiting for the return of KH before I go ebay hunting.

Wave 2 is long gone- and I only saw them once.

I have seen Wave 3 three times now! Weird.

Next year we will have the BSG classic & 2003 Titaniums and the Stargate items. I wonder if we will see some 6" ships as well for these lines.

Hi AW, :)
actually I am still missing the Titanium first wave (Tie Fighter, X-Wing, Slave I, and Millennium Falcon). :(
I do not want to bother you in any way, but if you can help me with these I will be very happy.
Thank you in any case. :D
Ciao,

I've now checked the other Toys R Us, and that is also out of X-Wings. They've just restocked for christmas, and I'm sure they will again so they may come back. Still a fair few TIE'S, Falcon's and Slave One's though, so I can grab those for you, thats no problem. PM me.

Well, my Wave 3 turned up today (bloody French postal system!), very impressed with this wave, I know its old news, but what the hell! The Naboo fighter is lovely (and doesn't have bendy fins like most I've seen pics of!), the TIE Bomber is a chunky thing, I love it. Clone Swamp speeder is nice, and the landspeeder is a surprise, thought I'd not like it. ARC-170 I already have one loose, so that wasn't such a surprise, but its still one of my favourite Titaniums so far.

They are staying in the boxes with my Wave 1, as will all future waves that I aquire, until I have the room to display them all.

Jedigoofy. I am checking TRU, no X-Wings yet, but I asked and they are getting a large batch of SW stuff at the end of Nov, so I'm confident they will have them in.

WS, thanks again for getting me those wave 3 Titaniums. I opened them last night, this time I just cut through the bubble instead of slicing off the tape and I kinda regret it, the tape way lets you close up the bubble fairly well if you want to re-store them. The Swamp Speeder is funny, the pilots look like they're sitting in easy chairs. The ARC-170 is very whooshable, but I do wish the wings closed (the Titanium X-wing is the same problem, lineage carries it I guess). The Naboo Fighter is very nice and definitely worth opening, I can't imagine NOT opening this piece. All in all, I hope Hasbro starts tightening up their sculpting some, the new ones all soft sculpts, but they're still nice pieces and feel great out in loose.

I wish the ARC wings closed, too, but c'est la vie.

I dug out my old 96-99 Galoob ships last night, and then bought and opened spares of all my Titaniums- I went down the dark road of One to Keep, One to Open. ARGH!

I also dug out my JC Penney X-Ray kit, and opened their stands so my Episode one ships could have stands :)

I'm going to post variations I noticed here in a bit, but it's good to have them all opened! I just need a red Republic Gunship and an AT-RT to open (got them off Ebay for about $8 each with shipping- so not too bad) and I'll have them all open, save for Wave 4 :)

I can't wait for a metal Darth's TIE! I like the plastic one a lot! The Plastic Tyderium could have been better, and I hope that the metal one is! I wonder if they will do an AT-AT? I'd like to see a B-Wing, too!

Ok- off to the variation thread :)

My partial Wave 2 arrived today. Star Destroyer, Snowspeeder, A-Wing, Republic Gunship and Tri fighter. Only the first three are new to me, love the SD, very impressive little version of the great ship.

And thats ALL I'm buying with regards to Titaniums before christmas. After the holidays I'll track down the remaining bits of Wave 2, and work on getting Wave 4 and the two box sets.

The DC Star Destroyer is fabulous, probably one of the best pieces Galoob ever put out from the Star Wars brand, so much detail in such a small toy, paint was good, gimmick was fun, everything was worthy. It's even better than the DC Super Star Destroyer (it has a mini Star Destroyer that's connected to its side similar to the SD's Rebel Corvette).

BTW, after further examination, I think the ARC-170's wings are TOO wide, granted the 4" figure-based Hasbro ARC-170 has stubby wings but there's a medium between the 2 extremes, the Titanium 170's wings are almost twice as wide as the vehicle is long.

I have an "open or not?" question, I picked up the Titanium Ultra X-wing and Republic Gunship last night but I'm not sure if I want to open them, the packaging will be annihilated and I already own both as Action Fleet versions. So open 'em or keep 'em safe?

LTBasker
12-07-2005, 01:46 PM
If you don't want to annihilate the packaging, you could try opening it by cutting the bubble on all sides but the back leaving it as a hinge? I haven't tried this so I don't know if it's difficult to get the plastic piece holding the ship out or not.

JediTricks
12-07-2005, 04:43 PM
The way it's designed, the bottom of the bubble is under the lip of the cardboard and there's a graphic insert behind it, so cutting it will cut into the insert and leave it sorta floppy. Plus, once you get in there, it looks like freeing the ship will be a real challenge for the wirecutters since the ties are so close, and once you cut the ties they're gonna be useless and not removable. Maybe I could go in through the bottom and free the bubble at the source, that'd make it possible to untie the twistie ties (normally I just cut them but I think I'll want to salvage them for use in this packaging).

MAN I cannot wait for the new packaging, this totally sucks.

JediTricks
12-08-2005, 08:19 PM
Well, I opened some of the cardboard flaps only to discover that the sadists at Hasbro glued the damn bubble backer down onto the cardboard, making it pretty much impossible to go in from the bottom. So, I tried to cut a flap at the top of the bubbles but the curve proved difficult to follow so I kinda cut into the face some (the X-wing all the way down to the middle) and I cut a deep gash into the right thruster on the Gunship (thankfully the knife was so sharp and the plastic so rubbery that you literally cannot see the slice without separating it a little). I ended up cutting away the twist ties from the top of the tray inserts that hold up the ships and putting the ships back in the boxes, if not for the sloppy bubble cuts I would have gotten away scott free and had perfect-display packaging.

I'm definitely glad I opened them especially the X-wing which feels so nice in metal.

Warstar
12-08-2005, 09:16 PM
Well- ignore my PM then :D

Yeah, the ships in metal are cool but yeah- the packaging looks good but cannot be salvaged at all, I swear...

I was flabberghasted by the GLUE on the bottom- weird as it was.

As you can see in the thread where I opened the X-Wing from a while back, it was tough to get into it- but it's nice to have the ships in metal (agreed :))

The new cases will probably fit into that packaging- but I hope they won't be GLUED...

JediTricks
12-09-2005, 05:24 PM
If I had made a tighter cut around the top of the plastic, that would have salvaged the bubble, other than that I actually did keep all the plastic and cardboard together and looking good (unlike the horror-film hackup you did on your X-wing :D).

If they use glue on the next wave with the cases, I'm going to start screaming and yelling like a madman.

Besides wave 3's awesome TIE Bomber, wave 1 had the TIE Fighter (one of my favorites), wave 2 had the Imperial Star Destroyer, the first mass-retail wave (next year's first wave) has the Death Star 1, they've got Vader's TIE planned, and the original Galoob line also had a nifty Super Star Destroyer in the Die Cast line so we'll probably see that one as well.

The rest of the Titaniums so far have been either Rebel or pre-Imperial.

Actually the classic trilogy ships are rereleases from 1997. The DS has better detail then before. I have all the 1997 ships including the soon to be rereleased Executor. the Imperial shuttle didnt come out back then.

Darth's TIE Fighter was never released in Die-Cast Metal, either. :D
