I've recently been getting some really strange people asking for friend adds. Plus the usual scam type requests from fake people, stuff like women who are looking for the love of their life and then suddenly the message turns into a desperate marry me so i can get my visa sort of thing. Or weird pidgin english messages rabbiting on about money and debts and if i could deposit a check into my account and all kinds of convoluted sob stories.
Plus some real larger than life characters i wouldn't touch with a barge pole in real life.
I'm thinking i should just add all the weirdos and not add the normal people. There again, is anyone on MySpace all that normal? lol I'm amused that people are asking to be friends without reading any of my blogs. It's kindalike being a democrat and having republicans vote for you.

One thing I think is pretty cool about customising my profile is I'm finally starting to understand bits of html and so on. Fair enough i use ready made chunks of code to make stuff happen like the background and the interactive stuff and so on, but i'm also picking up ways to tweak the page so it looks right and everything fits ok.
In that respect I now prefer my MySpace profile/blog to my MSN one. Though I still need to find a repository for images. I need some kind of basic web dump to shove a load of images I can then show on my blogs.
photobucket isn't for me I think. is there a time limit on hosting pics via there? keep seeing photobucket logos where images should be on other peoples profiles.

Oh and KH, I'm thinkin' about changing to an orange background if I can find a good enough orange based image. The red I have now is hard to read text against. Temporary remedy today was to bold all the text everywhere. but it's not really a good enough solution for me.

Yeah, Jargo, I was surprised when I got that ancient nigerian exile scam letter, it gave me a nice warm feeling as I deleted it- I can't believe such a roundly discredited scam still has any legs at all, but it does appear someone figured it was worth dusting off for the myspace revolution such as it is

Is everyone else having fun with this Myspace thing? I've found it to be one of the highlights of my day when I get new comments/messages/friend requests. It's crazy but I'm serious.

Also if you look at my friends list you'll see that I've started to collect "celebrity" Myspace friends.

Tycho
03-15-2006, 08:52 PM
I totally don't want to "collect." I added most of you guys that I found on MySpace because I can IM all of you when I find something funny about SW or whatever and I regularly talk to you on SSG. This is just one more line of communication.

Most of the celebrities and film or TV characters are frauds. I have two as friends, but I don't think they are who they claim to be. I got excited when I first discovered them, and learned the people playing those particular roles are cool - we've chatted. But I'm not going to add "Darth Vader," etc.

Very few of my friends in real life go on MySpace - only several actually. It would have been a convenient way to run my local collecting circle, but I'm the only one from that group online there and our e-mail works fine for all that (you guys won't want to shop San Diego stores anyway)

Many of the women just want flattery or are attention *****s, if they're not trying to get you to give up your e-mail address so they can SPAM you ads for their porno web-cam sites. I just ignore them. The search feature is convenient to help you locate girls within your local area, but you have to be careful of false pictures, personalities, etc. - not to mention women are dangerous anyway.

I log in several times day and night. It's cool for me right now as I'm suffering from a period of insomnia.

The forums can be a bit cruddy with personal attacks and so on, but there's some really funny guys using the site.

At the moment I'm kinda shy of requesting an add and letting other people come to me but I'm sure the more I go there the bolder I'll get.

And getting messages from slicker is like communing with god. awesome! :lipsrseal

You guys are just jealous because I'm getting REAL messages from girls.

For the record PF, this is what Marina had to say:

Subject: This girl I know likes you.
Body: My friend i know told me to talk to you because she is interested after reading your profile. You look like her 1st crush or something. She hooked me up with my $FILE[c:..girl.txt]friend so when she asked me to tell you to talk to her since she is shy I told her $FILE[c:..ok.txt]. She said she is going to post blogs about you so keep checking. She's the $FILE[c:..hot.txt] $FILE[c:..girl.txt] I know.

Here is her profile to add as a friend.

Now tell me that isn't real.

"Caesar, in a thread as ludicrous as stilla's "sepArate" thread, how is it that you manage to get the most inappropriate comment in?"
-JediTricks, 11/30/2005

F*** Marina...well, actually that sounds like a good idea  ...but I digress....

I'd like to know more about that statement above. Two issues. First, why the hell was my thread "ludicrous"? Since when is literacy ludicrous? It's nice to see that adults find it appropriate to promote ignorance and illiteracy while mocking education and intelligence.

Second, what was the comment?

Well, I never said it was ludicrous, so you'll have to ask JT. I shouldn't speak for him but I think he meant the thread overall, as in what it turned into, was ludicrous. But I'll let you ask him for sure. :)

The thread overall got crazy, a lot of nutso responses, that's why it got canned, there was yammering about dying from broken legs, the question of how to spell "defecate", someone posted something inappropriate regarding donkeys, all this in the Comments forum, it was ludicrous for sure. I just got a message from Tiffany. She's 21 and lives in the United States and she and her friends are having a competition to see who is the hottest. So Tiffany sent me a poll so I could validate her 'hotness'. Which about sums up a third of myspacers.
another third being the godawful rock and metal bands persistently badgering me to add them as friends for some reason without even looking to see what my musical tastes are.
And the other third are the trolls who exist purely to flame everyone else and form cliques and despise everything that ever was is or will be.

obviously i'm over generalising and there are exeptions.

I set up my page with fairly narrow parameters...filmmakers interested in networking. For the most part, the "strangers" who contact me are just that. I've only received three unsolicited requests from chicks with friends who think I'm hot or something to that affect. Perhaps the spammers just haven't found me yet!

I wouldn't reccommend sending cash, as I don't trust everyone at the post office. If you do. wrap it so it cannot be detected. :bandit: Also you will have to P.M. me for my address.

Thanks to those of you who made donations, I woke up at three am, with my arm in pain (probably a pinched nerve) and I checked my e-mail, only to find that there were several donations made to my page!

When's the deadline man? (Will you be running in your Stormtrooper uniform?) The Relay is on June 23rd through the 24th. I think online donations can be made up til then, if you want to donate by check you can send the money to:

4234 N Knoxville Ave
Peoria, IL 61614
Please include the following:
Event ID#: 136735 Event Name: Relay For Life of McLean County - 2006
Name: Barry Benecke Participant ID#: 127834729
Team: Imperial Walkers

This is so myself, and my team get credit for your donation. Last year my team raised around $2,500.00 of which about 1/2 I raised myself, plus I was ablt to get Wal-Mart to match with another $1,000.00

Thank you all again! This means so much to me as I just hit the one year anniversary of my moms passing. This is what helps me get through this rough time.

I think what BobaFrett is doing is awsome. I lost my own mother to cancer about 3 years ago. I've made substantial donations to benefit City of Hope facilities in California (cancer research and treatment). I will see if there is anything I can do for Frett's cause. I feel it's very worthwhile.

Also, knowing my own situation, I donate to the National Kidney Foundation.

The sad fact is that all of us probably know someone that is fighting or has fought cancer. I currently have three good friends back in LA that are in various stages of treatment or remission. Half of my family on my mother's side has been hit by cancer... something like 80% of them (seriously) have had some form or another. It can be really overwhelming to hear all of the stories and to think that there's not much you can do...

That's the reason I donated Tycho is because I lost my grandfather to cancer several years ago and it was just terrible how fast it hit him. It too literally 6 months for him to from one of the funniest old men in the world to passing away due to the cancer spreading to nearly every part of his body. I don't wish that on any individual alive.Similar thing here. I indirectly lost a grandparent on both sides to cancer. Both had cancer and beat it, but their health never recovered and they never got close to what they were before the cancer was discovered.

I'd like to think that I'd have given something anyway even if I hadn't effected by it.

So, when we see that someone is doing something bobafrett, it's great. Good job, and good luck. :)

Besides losing my mom to cancer May 27th 2005, I also lost a friend of mine from back at one of the first jobs I ever worked. He was 47, and was diagnosed with cancer 6 months before he passed away this past January. Also the founder of the 501st costuming club lost his 7 year old daughter to cancer shortly after my own mom passed away. I will be walking in honor of those three.

On a lighter side, my former art teacher from my high school days survived, as well as an aerobics trainer at the Y.M.C.A. where I work, and one of the members at the Y also has made it through there cancer battle. So that makes at least six people I will be walking for,

I appreciate the kind words, You can read about how we got going on the troops attending last years Relay in the spring 06' issue of the MWG newletter. It's in the brown box under features and I believe it's a PDF file. http://www.midwestgarrison.com/index.php BTW, I'm co author of the article, and it was a blast to write!

Anyone do anything on myspace besides fill in surveys? :P I said i would stop but it's addictive. I started my own questionaire tonight just so there were a few different questions floating round.I have this mental image of some fat chick in a cube office typing up all of those myspace surveys. filling her days with endless regurgitated unimaginitive lists of things no-one really wants to know if you do or don't do. never anything that require real thought or deliberation.
Be nice if someone managed to rub a few braincells together and do something political. or just downright dirty.

I don't know. Perhaps I'm being too paranoid, but I don't care to answer most of the personal questions on those surveys, expecially exact information such as names, dates, locations, etc. It's just too problematic in this day and age.

Oh, I completely agree with you. I watch who I add (and that I know them) for the same reason. Your full name, mother's maiden name, etc. are bank account security checks, or at least PayPal's. Those kind of questions are mixed in with random trivia like what you had for breakfast and who you have a crush on. In surveys like that, I just don't answer or at least answer sarcastically to suspicious questions if I feel like actually taking the survey.

I just found an awesome polycistic kidney disease support group on MySpace. I had no idea so many other young people in their 20's faced this problem and struggled with issues I'm going through.

I'm not even the only one to have survived a massive brain aneurysm (it wasn't from sniffing Mouse Droids, guys). Besides, our SSG Family Doctor 21-B says that droids are perfectly safe. FX-7 concurs for a second opinion. Star Wars fans may want to filter the scent through a dark breath mask helmet however.

Anyway, if you noticed I'm in a great mood, that's because I found this MySpace support group. Pretty good stuff - especially when you've been stuck home all day collecting "liquid samples." I look forward to tomorrow at 7am when I can once again use a toilet like every other person in North America.

It was a similar sitaution with me.
I have Rheumatiod Arthritis (techincally it's Juvenille RA), which isn't localized like regular Osteo Arthritis, and while I knew it affected others, I hadn't met anyone else with RA.
So I was happy to find a group of predominently younger people with RA. And it helps reading about how some of them are doing (good or bad), what meds they're on (so I can ask my Doc 'what about _______ med?'), what generally helps/hurts them.

With so much damn negativity about Myspace, especially on tv, I'm always glad to hear something good about it once in a while.

That's good news Tycho. I got onto MySpace mostly because you guys were all going there, and I had originally heard it was more a "teen" place. But when I first signed on I was invited to join a group of folks over 40. I declined, because I am in denial.

I know. I sent him a message on MySpace about that. I think he's trying to get the older women, but that's just my opinion.

Just my point of view as well, but Matt, you'll cross a threshold, say at about 21-25, where you'll prefer the younger women, say 18-25:

never married (so obviously not divorced)
no kids (hopefully - you never know though)
low expectations (so if your MBA is not yet done and you don't have a "real" career going, you won't need a BMW as well)

But in any case, it's great to find someone at a place in life where you are at so that you can make the journey and experience the triumphs and set-backs together. At least that's supposed to be more romantic than a controlling sugar-momma.

Hey Lasers and Gamorreans:

Here's the URL for the MySpace kidney disease group. I was surprised by how many young people are affected by this (so many in their 20's) and really touched by their stories. It's a public group so you can view all the members and read their posts. I just joined myself so I haven't been too active but I've made a few friends as well as learned I am far more fortunate than some other people out there - especially because I didn't die from my aneurysm last summer.

oh, is the action one a joke?Nice! You see young man...

once upon a time there was this popular Star Wars fan site that nearly vanished. In trying to decide what he might do as an alternative to that Star Wars fan site (while it was merely sleeping quietly in a cocoon), the site's creator decided to develop an "all around" action figure site. One that might have the same form and feel as the Star Wars site, but would eventually attract and encourage a larger community. He looked around and saw that, oddly enough, there were very few decent sites dealing with "action figures" and "collectibles" in general, that also had a well thought out and comfortable forum system like the one at that dormant and slumbering Star Wars fan site. So, he put the idea together (creating a dummy site to divert attention), he asked a few others to help out, and then quietly waited for his chance to launch the new site.

In the mean time, that lost Star Wars site began to stir inside it's egg, struggling to break free. As if by some miracle it was released and allowed to hatch long before anyone expected it would be, and so with the rebirth of that popular Star Wars site came the birth of this new site geared toward all manner of action figure and toy collectors. It's just a baby now, so be gentle... but also, don't be afraid to get to know actionfigs.com (http://www.actionfigs.com) when you get a chance.

FBI nabs U.S. teen en route to Jericho seeking MySpace.com man

By The Associated Press

A 16-year-old top student from Michigan tricked her parents into getting her a passport and then flew off to the Mideast to be with a West Bank man she met on MySpace.com, authorities say.

U.S. officials in Jordan persuaded her to turn around and go home before she reached the West Bank. She was on her way home Friday.

Katherine R. Lester is an excellent student, her father said. "She's a good girl. Never had a problem with her," Terry Lester said.

MySpace.com is a social networking Web site with more than 72 million members that lets users post photos, blogs and journals. There have been scattered accounts of sexual predators targeting minors they met through the site.

Katherine disappeared Monday after talking her family into getting her a passport by saying she was going to Canada with friends, sheriff's officials said. She apparently planned to visit a man whose MySpace account describes
him as a 25-year-old from Jericho, Undersheriff James Jashinske said.

Her family became suspicious and notified local authorities on Wednesday. They eventually got the FBI involved. The FBI traced the teenager to a Wednesday
flight from New York's Kennedy Airport to Tel Aviv, Israel. At a scheduled stop in Amman, Jordan, U.S. officials persuaded her to return home, FBI agent Robert Beeckman said.

It was not immediately known when she would arrive back in the United States. Terry Lester said the family was keeping details of the return private.

Katherine apparently contacted the man from Jericho about three months ago, Jashinske said. Jericho, a city of 17,000, is a relatively calm area of the volatile West Bank.

MySpace forbids youngsters 13 and under from joining and provides special protections for those 14 and 15 - only people on their list of friends can view their profiles. Older users also have the option of restricting certain personal data so it can be seen only by people they have identified as friends.

Shawn Lester told The Saginaw News that her daughter has "never given me a day's trouble. ... I just don't understand with all these new laws protecting America how a 16-year-old kid could get out of the country." She said her daughter never had a boyfriend and seemed to be content with that.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said he could say little about the girl because of privacy rules.

Katherine and her mother live in Gilford, a village about 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of Detroit in an agricultural region. Her father lives in Grand Blanc Township.

The age of consent in Michigan is 16; Katherine turns 17 on June 21.

"I'll be honest with you, we don't know if a crime's been committed," Jashinske said Friday.

Flying into a terror zone just to get laid?

This tops the reasons I think False-whatevers exist.

You call an escort service if you're really in that much need - not Hammas or the GLTU.

It would be much cheaper and timely than an international trip too, I think.

Whatever....

People's stupidity never ceases to amaze me. I can see how ladies in that line of work in the MiddleEast might get stoned however, so I could see the circumstances where this guy was trying for a chick from somewhere in the West. It's very pathetic no matter who fronted the cash for this sojourn though.

This is the latest on this story, from our local news:
Palestinian Says His Love For Reese Girl Is Pure

JERICHO, West Bank (AP) -- The Palestinian man who met a Michigan teen online says he's heartbroken U.S. officials forced her to go back home.
Abdullah Jimzawi says his love for Katherine Lester is pure and they plan to marry.
The 20-year-old music buff who spends at least ten hours a day online says he's not an Internet predator.
Authorities say 16-year-old Lester had tricked her parents into getting her a passport and then flew off to be with the West Bank man. They met on www.mySpace.com (http://www.myspace.com/). Federal agents caught up with her in Jordan earlier this month.
Jimzawi says Lester is willing to convert to Islam. He says they remain in close contact everyday through Internet phone calls.

Did you end up hitting your donation mark, BF?

I'm still waiting for final numbers to come in, but from the ones I collected here at my end, I didn't quite make it, with $894.00 collected. Keep in mind that I still have a few people who have offered to donate even after the "Relay", and some donations may have been mailed directly to the American Cancer Society. I also have to get my total from ACS so I can get Wal-Mart to give a matching grant, plus since I spent 24 hours at this event, so I may also be eligible for a $150 grant for doing over 15 hours of volunteer time, and it would go to my favorite charity.

Over all I raised over half the team total, pretty good for a 41 year old Star Wars geek. :D

I didn't need to download it -seems. A friend of mine messaged me and it came right in. I didn't chat as I was away when he messaged me and he was away when I responded, but it works.

In general, I don't like IM's though. They disrupt my thoughts while I'm busy hunting hypocrites in religious and political forums over there.

I had invites from 28 porn chicks this morning! Man, I'm popular! That must mean that they REALLY like me, not just the false-likes they give you guys.

Tycho
07-11-2006, 07:40 AM
I forgot to count my pornbot friend requests. But I had to hit delete for 3 pages worth of them. I don't know how many appear on a page though.

They usually have the exact same profile info and only 1 picture of themselves. Some guy is probably sending those out, making the false profiles and everything. Once you add them, likely advertising (either for sex sites - or home loans, online banking, who knows what else?) probably start to show up in your bulletins.

Also the surveys that get tossed around as bulletins can be very tricky. Watch for these:

Pet's name
Mother's Maiden Name
City you were born in
high school you attended
etc. etc.

Now compare those with eBay's security questions, or your online banking passwords. MySpace can be a criminal's paradise - and not just for only child predators.

mabudonicus
07-11-2006, 09:46 AM
I think it's kinda odd how the only "big stories" featuring myspace are always "sex-predator" type tales, when the whole "identity theft" thing is such a common problem (if you are to believe the headlines) and from what I've sen on there, literally thousands of people are BEGGING for trouble with them stupid surveys etc...
It's almost like the media (FOX anyone??) would rather have people look the other way, making them think that only kids can come into trouble on there when it looks like it'd be way more dangerous to unsuspecting/ignorant "adults"

just my :beard: 's worth

To be honest the first I even heard about it was a refence in the news about a killer who had a myspace account and posted all kinds of sick things then killed a little girl, next I heard about pediphiles who were trolling for kiddies on myspace, all the hype I've heard about it was from very very bad news reports.

Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but...Any public forum with something like 90 million accounts is bound to have a few nut cases. Especially one that's been popular with (and marketed to) young people since the start.

Tycho
07-11-2006, 11:02 PM
Since a majority of young people use MySpace, I was pleasantly surprised when I found several kidney disease support groups organized there with other people in their 20's that are dealing with this (the supposed cause of my brain aneurysm last summer). So there are very positive apects to MySpace that are not getting the news media coverage.

I also found "Kate Beckinsale" too. I mean it's good to be polite - you never know - but if the stars are on MySpace, chances are they have a publicity rep do it for them. If they REALLY are on MySpace, it's probably not under their real name or picture.

It is dubious whether the "stars" I've talked to are real. I'm thinking 1 may be. We'll see I guess. I have some very strong common interests with this person and may wind up meeting them when it's convenient for both of us at an upcoming event. It can't hurt to try, can it?

I'm still up there though. If any of you have (had) me on your friends list and have to create a new profile, please message me identifying your old and new (friends request) and I'll re-add you if I have to. Hopefully Tom will fix things and they'll be just fine the way they are.

I did download some form of Flash 9.0 or something that Tom had bulletined about so that MySpace would be protected. I'm currently not having any technical problems but I don't see what Flash has to do with it. Meanwhile, I've considered "what if Tom was hacked?" I have highspeed-broadband and MySpace still stalls when loading. I think Rupert Murdoch has gone cheap and refused to invest more in alternate path servers so MySpace is exceedingly frustrating and slower. SSG loads instantly for me - so does any other website. I must conclude that the slowdown is on MySpace's end.

well Google has won the master advertising spot on myspace now so perhaps the ads will be a little more controlled and not quite so epileptic fit inducing. I sent you an add-me and message JimJam. I know I don't talk to many of you on MySpace, but that's just because I already do on SSG. It's still nice to have connections to you all there. It's an added support network we needed especially when "another corporate entity" was going to take our beloved internet home away.

Me two, and I sent you a pretty picture of me, your beloved Stormtrooper pal here at SSG! (yes that is me, during the EPIII midnight showing)

That makes yet another one on the Myspace bus.

I should go back and count how many people have joined since I made this thread. It's neat having all of you on there to have fun.

I don't comment much but I do tend to go on tears every once in a while so be ready...

I deleted you, JJB.

"Deleted" is so, oh, I don't know, so cold. I always preferred saying "rubbed out" or just "killed" says so much in so few words.

Careful stillakid, you're on my Next-To-Be-Deleted list.
