View Full Version : Do you see yourself dramatically scaling back Star Wars collecting for 2006?

01-30-2006, 03:24 PM
With the Star Wars movies firmly behind us and nothing major new scheduled for this year, Star Wars collecting moves into a new phase, changing focus a little, adding more repaints, raising the price of basic figures, and covering more figures which have already been done in the modern age. With so many of the characters and costumes of the movies being released, some might feel that they've seen it all in collecting, that it's "done" to them as they have all they want, that this is the final spin-cycle before the machine shuts down, perhaps Star Wars collecting is losing interest to them -- others, naturally, disagree and feel that there is still life to Star Wars collecting. In many ways, the future of this SW collecting hobby depends on how well the licensees can keep interest this year.

This week's poll asks voters to honestly look at the situation and vote how they feel collecting is looking to them in '06.

thanks to Tycho for the poll idea.

I think I know how you voted, JT ;)

I'm buying waaaaaaaaay less than 75% of what's coming out. Truth be told, I'll be shocked if I buy more than a couple figures and the oddball thing (Potato heads, etc.) here and there.

01-30-2006, 03:52 PM
I scaled back my normal collecting habits with the release of the ROTS line last year. The price increase really irked me, plus the ridiculous amount of figure exclusives (which I absolutely despise in any figure line) led me to severely curtail my collecting habits in '05.

I will probably buy figures of characters never before released and the occasional Titaniums vehicle(s) from the OT.

I will also continue buying Star Wars LEGO sets.

01-30-2006, 04:05 PM
I'm at a point where something really has to wow me to buy it. So far I've only seen the Tatooine wave in stores. I thought for sure I would buy the Han in carbonite (Ironically, when I started collecting again in '96 it was only going to be for Han figs, that changed quickly). I am not even interested in it as I already have 2 Han in Carbonite (POTF and Jabba's pallace diorama). The only one I may pick up is Bib Fortuna as I never got one in the past. I was hoping to get an Anakin ROTS starfighter at some point, but I think I waited too long and missed the boat, which I am ok with. The only ROTS vehicle I got was the exclusive Obi Wan starfighter on sale. I will likely spend less than $100 on Star Wars this year.

01-30-2006, 04:16 PM
I voted that "I'm picking and choosing but still buying a lot."

I scaled back my Hasbro toy purchases quite a bit during the ROTS line and will continue to support the basic figure assortment and the occasional vehicle (when they aren't repaints) through the SAGA line. Beyond that most of my SW collecting will be focused on statues and mini-busts from companies like Gentle Giant, Sideshow and Attakus.

01-30-2006, 04:35 PM
I voted half as I'm concentrating on OT figures so my purse (I said purse) will have more money.

01-30-2006, 04:46 PM
She said 'purse.

I voted for half, but it would probably be a little less. In terms of the toys, I'm pretty much only buying items never before made (unless they are vast improvement over previous issues), with the exception of the CW gunship. That said, spending may still be significant, as my tastes have been evolving: Spending more for SS 12", the different offereings from GG, MR and Code 3.

01-30-2006, 04:50 PM
I selected buying less than 75%. I've reached a point in life where there a far more important things in life to be spending money on, as the thrill of collecting is wearing off. I'll still pick upthe unique figures, and new characters that haven't been made yet, so long as they're from the movie (no Scorch for me). With so many repaints coming out this year, I refuse to buy the same figure yet again, something I might have done in my completist days, as I did when I bought every minor variant of the main characters in the later waves of Ep. I.

01-30-2006, 04:53 PM
I think I know how you voted, JT ;)
Whatever do you mean? :D

I voted for "No, I'm picking and choosing, but I'll still plan on buying a lot.", but the reality is my situation is sorta similar to Ji'dai's, I already scaled back my SW collecting some last year due to the price increase, so I'm staying on-par with that.

01-30-2006, 04:58 PM
I voted, "No, I'm picking and choosing, but I'll still plan on buying a lot." but I don't think that I would use "a lot" to describe how much I might buy. I'm simply gonna be picking and choosing, and buying... some.

01-30-2006, 05:58 PM
It was Tycho's option, I thought of "a lot" as more than half, I guess you have to define it for yourself.

01-30-2006, 06:42 PM
I voted less than 75% of what's out there. I passed on 11 out of 14 figures already released. I'm not buying Squash-leashed, Custom Clod-hoppers, or Transworthless.

I guess I'll buy the Lucas family. I really only want George, but I can use them all in dioramas. I also think I'll get the EE astromech packs.

I bought the SS Obi-Wan and Kit (but I really think we're talking Hasbro here). I think I regret not going for Anakin before.

MR has not released the DM Sabers yet. But I'll be getting 2 of those.

I never was a Lego SW collector or into GG, Koto stuff, Mediacom, etc.

It will sure feel weird, but I'm going to start getting into having more money.

01-30-2006, 07:01 PM
I'll be buying less than 75% of the Hasbro junk but I WILL be buying 100% of the Sideshow figures and the occassional Master Replicas prop.

Finally I can pick and choose what I want to collect instead of having it overwhelm my finances!

01-30-2006, 07:09 PM
No, I'm picking and choosing, but I'll still plan on buying a lot

I've noticed over the last year or two I've really scaled back and I'm actually missing items now. It's been totally inadvertant but it's there nonetheless. I really want to keep spending as I like buying new stuff but of late there really hasn't been much to get me excited except for the new TSC stuff. ROTS really turned me off for some reason. I think the main fact for that was that we got all ROTS figures for about 8 months straight and I don't recall getting all AOTC or TPM toys for that long of a stretch.

01-30-2006, 07:09 PM
I voted less than half, but that would only be Hasbro stuff (and even then probably more like less than %75). Figuring in the fact that I ONLY collect 3 3/4" figures and pack-ins with ships that really scales my collection back. The only other thing Hasbro does that even remotely looks interesting are the titanium vehicles... but I've even passed those up so far.

No sideshow, no Koto, no MR, no Kubricks etc. The large line of Unleashed may catch my attention if they truly do bring it back... but outside of that just the basic figures and other 3 3/4" figures (Lucas family, astromechs).

01-30-2006, 08:00 PM
No, I'm picking and choosing, but I'll still plan on buying a lot. About the only new I collect these day are the SW Lego set. And I do pick and choose which sets I get.

Vintage is another story. When I find something I like I'll go after it, but it's highly unpredictable.

I selected not buying 75% of what they release.

I have never bought a high percentage of a certain figure line, except the POTJ line which I have one of every figure. With the other lines, I am not even close.

Still lately, I would say that I have spent maybe 10 - 20% less than I have been paying for Star Wars normally. This makes my wallet fatter, my room less full of clutter, but me a little more disappointed, since I am always searching for unique figures and finds but am finding less and less lately.

01-30-2006, 08:29 PM
not buying 75%!!!!! i only got 3 figs from the 1st 2 waves. not going to buy extras like i used too. still got the extras taking up space, love to do ssg trades with them though. i used to be a completist, but refuse to buy most resculps anymore. i am a carded collector, but am not displaying them so whats the use of having 4 different carded versions of the pit of carkoon? the price ****es me off too. will always buy the unique figures that are carded nicely. bring on the unleashed han and shock. some of the upcoming saga figures are just too cool to pass on. bring them on too. another problem (my personal issue) is that i have to starcase every darn figure i buy (that adds about 1.40 to each figure).

01-30-2006, 08:30 PM
For several reasons I am scaling way way back. Kebcos demise (I was a one of every figure club member), difficulty with finding the "exclusive" figures in 2005 (sorry, not willing to pay $50 for the lava vader on ebay), tired of repaint/kit bashed figures. I plan to buy figures of characters I do not already have and also the titanium ships (that were not previously released). Should also help appease the wife with the lower spending (I picked up most ROTS at the $4.99 price point - so higher prices also a factor). I already open most figures due to limited storage space, so skipping figures will help there as well.

In my past experience as poll editor, I've noticed that the poll percentages usually hold pretty steady after 100 votes or so keeping with the same pattern up to even 1000+.

What we're witnessing here folks is alarming in that only 1/4 of the usually enthusiastic crowd is really gung-ho for 2006. (BTW I thought ROTS was great and the products were awesome)

But 3/4 or more of the SW crowd here is burning out on collecting many items.

As I've said before, don't sell what you've got. Learn to enjoy it even if you don't want to add new things to the pile. You'll eventually want to get specific things, as do I.

01-30-2006, 09:00 PM
No, I'm picking and choosing, but I'll still plan on buying a lot.

I said I would be cutting back, but have bought every figure so far this year. I dont want them all, but so far they have been cool remakes. I cant pass up a Vader figure and I didnt have a sensorscoped R2.

I think the closer a poll is, such as this one, the less likely the numbers will hold steadily after 100 votes, I bet the percentages fluctuate strongly till at least 250 on this one (unless it runs out of gas tomorrow).

I'll being buying as many figures as usual, but I've never been a completist - just variations. Most of my acquisitions are from trades or the secondary market.

Picking and choosing, but buying alot!
I don't think I will buy every figure to have carded, as I have in the past. With the excepton of few hard to finds I have all figs carded since 95 (as well as most all loose) with the excepion of the Phantom line as I only have those loose. I picked up all the OTC line because the packages looked so good despite a ton of repaints. I will only get new figs, or figs with significant resculpts, or repaints that weren't availble single carded (ie. Barada, C-3po Battle droid, Reinken)
I have all Action Fleet boxed, and MM loose, but am have resisted the Titanium line since its introduction.
I have picked up the Tater line though, as well as Mpire, Attactix, and Galactic Heroes. So even tough I am not buying EVERY action figure, or some lines like Force Battlers, I have picked up a few new lines.
And Heaven help us with the Sideshow 12" and Bust Ups. I am still VERY much addicted to Most things Star Wars!

01-31-2006, 05:18 AM
I'm done collecting figures aside from Clones or Stormies. Its just too hard and too much work to collect them. Plus I'm not big on the Saga line.

What I will collect is the AT-AT when its released, other cool vehicles, MR helmets (clone, stormy, boba), 12" figs (some custom, some sideshow), and some sabers (some custom, some MR or other). Lately I've been more about props/replicas than the figures and toys. Its just more fun to collect and display the props/replicas.

01-31-2006, 08:13 AM
I stopped my major collecting back in 2001. I'll pick up real cool exclusives(they have to be REALLY!!!!! COOL, in order for me to buy them). And whatever Cantina and Jabba's Palace figs come out.

01-31-2006, 09:40 AM
I'm still buying all the figures, the occasional lego set, and maybe a power f/x saber or two. I may reevaluate after R5-d4 comes out. That's the last major figure I wanted. So far though, I'm excited about all the figures except the Neimoidian and the bug people from Geonosis (actually, that entire wave minus scorch and the clone trooper kind of stinks.) The rest look really good though in my opinion. The custom choppers, transformers, and battlepacks can sit on the shelf for the kiddies for all I care.

I have already informed my boss that I need a raise to support my growing Star Wars Habit or I will have to find a new job. It is great to be in a profession that pays so well and is so short-handed.

Cutting back?

Not a chance between Heaven and Hell.

It is much more likely that aside from continuing my normal buying on non-army builder figures, I will ramp up my buying of the army builders. And I have no intention of missing any of the Sideshow 12". I am even trying to figure out a way to get the exclusive Luke that is selling for 200.00 on ebay without losing out on the extra money.

01-31-2006, 12:10 PM
i picked "buying half"...that's about right....i'll get the troopers and such for army building, and i'll get the secondary characters that interest me like veers,derlin,etc...i won't pick up any of the main characters...how many more anakin's,kenobi's,and solo's could i need? so i AM scaling back...not completely, but i'm buying nowhere near what i did last year....

I like the looks of a lot of the new stuff (although I'm not happy about the lack of articulation on certain characters), but access to the product might slow me down! If something's an online exclusive, it's usually to expensive and I miss out. With the large amount of TRUs closing I'm afraid of them getting exclusives. Wal-Mart and Target exclusives don't bother me so much. Wal-Mart at least keeps the price down, and if something lasts long enough at Target they'll mark it down drastically. But . . . not every Wal-Mart gets their own exclusives, and I'll never forget how the first Target clone exclusive went nuts! I'll buy whatever is decent (that means no red paint Christmas Vader) that they put within my reach.

Picking and Choosing.

I'm going from buying $6K worth of stuff last year to a planned budget of $4K. So for me it's a 33% decrease, but still alot of stuff...

pickin and choosing!!!..mostly new figs and army builders.

01-31-2006, 07:42 PM
I cut my buying habits a lot in 2005 before ROTS hit so I don't see myself cutting back now. The new figures look good and with all of the new sculpts coming out this year I'm pretty excited. The extended lines may get boring to me. I'm already getting less excited about the Titanium lines. So those may fall to the wayside if anything.

01-31-2006, 10:37 PM
I voted "Picking and Choosing."

I will definitely be getting most of if not all of the basic action figures. I'm not real big into collecting vehicles and sets (because of their cost and the amount of space they take up) so I'll be leaving out quite a bit of merchandise. However, I'll still be spending a lot.

02-02-2006, 10:32 AM
Well first, I have scaled down dramacticly since I stopped beinga carded collector, also I no longer look for the variations. Right now I am only looking for the new ones like veers derlin and cody.

I still army build a little, as I want at least 2-3 Cody's and about 6 of scorch.

02-02-2006, 11:03 AM
I don't really buy that much as it is, so I'm not buying 75% or more.
The Spudtrooper was the first SW toy I've bought since...probably the BK toys.

02-02-2006, 06:15 PM
Well, it changed a little but essentially stayed the overall same, the current results are split almost down the middle, with 53.5% collectors saying they're cutting down to half or less. I wonder how true this will hold in 6 months or so.

02-02-2006, 07:16 PM
Barada...left him...I have him in the three pack.

I may leave Reiken, Veers...although hes not "seeable" in the AT AT so I might buy him.

No Kit Bash figs...you can keep your snowtrooper.

I have to take it down a notch.

02-02-2006, 09:29 PM
I wouldnt leave Veers, although I have the AT-AT one, it is a much better sculpt, plus it has the armor. You can double him as an imperial officer as well.

02-03-2006, 06:23 AM
Now I'm only collecting ones that I like. Which means only a few of the basic size and all galactic heroes.

I think it's more important to like something that to collect EVERYTHING.

all the other lines of star wars stuff doesn't float my boat, even though some of it does look good.

02-03-2006, 05:29 PM
Im cured from my old completeist habits- I buy what I like now. (which is what i shouldve done from the begining)

Im cured from my old completeist habits- I buy what I like now. (which is what i shouldve done from the begining)

Here, Here! I have so many figures that I got back in the 90's (that I don't much like anymore) that I bought one carded and one or more to open. I am SO glad I'm not a carded collector and a completist anymore. More money saved for other things and really no stress to collect! And more space!
