Comingsoon.net (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994) is reporting on a movie about Star Wars fans.

Foursome to Play Star Wars Fanboys
Source: The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/)
February 1, 2006

Kristen Bell, Jay Baruchel, Chris Marquette and Sam Huntington are in final talks to play "Star Wars (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#)" geeks in Fanboys, a comedic drama (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#) that Kevin Spacey's (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#) Trigger Street is producing for The Weinstein Company. The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#) says Kyle Newman is making his directorial debut on the feature.

The movie, written by Adam F. Goldberg and Ernest Cline, follows four "Star Wars" fanboys from the Midwest who drive across the country to honor the wish of their dying friend: to see the yet-unreleased Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#) in its most optimal setting, George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch.

Dan Fogler already has been cast as one of the geeks, a hot-headed pizza boy. Shooting is scheduled to begin February 22 in New Mexico.Let the stereotypes begin!

I saw a fanmade film at Celebration 3 that had a similar premise where the nerdy guy had a choice. Go out with a really HOT girl that wants him or go to the opening night of EPS 1. It had some CGI effects with Pit droids and whatnot. In the end his ticket gets fried by the powerline, so he goes to see the girl. I may be a SW fan but I am more of a fan of getting with the ladies.

I think I saw a banner advertisement for it on a fanfilm website once too but never saw the movie till C3.

I can see it already: The "cool" nerd who has the ability to get some, the "hopeless" nerd who ends up gettin' some out of pity or something, the "uber-fanboy" nerd who speaks only in SW quotes, and the "scaredy cat" nerd who swears he's always finding blood in his stool.

Yeah, this sounds like a cool idea.

And don't forget the super hot nerd chick that the others manage not to notice how hot she is (AKA the She's All That syndrome).

Awwww man, Tony Danza? Sure, I'm no Richard Dean Anderson or Emilio Esteves, but...Well, I guess it could be worse. Lassie doesn't suit you Chux, isn't Scott Baio or Jason Mewes available?

P.S. Yeah the film is called "Fanboys" but you forgot to cast D'ox. You need the token female.

So what is the general public's idea of 'the star wars geek'? And does anyone here think they are a match for it in some - or all - ways?

I match it in that I'm a SW fan, but I'm not overweight, zitty, or living in my mom's basement.

I think SW fans get a bad wrap. Peolpe always tell you to "Live long and prosper" and you hafta smile and nod politely.

I'm a Star Wars fan but you wouldn't know it till you went into my bedroom - just one room of the house. I do still live with my parents (though many 23 year olds who aren't star wars geeks also live at home). I don't talk about Star Wars in the pub or at work - except on those rare occasions when I bump into my old friend from school who used to share my enthusiasm. I don't think about Star Wars all day/every day. I only use Star wars quotes on my brothers or someone who I know will get it. I'm actually a decent looking lad although I am prone to spots (again - so are a lot of people), I'm a bit on the thin side and I'm shortsighted so I wear glasses. I don't have a girlfriend down to a lack of effort on my part - put it this way I wouldn't use 'what did you think of Revenge of the Sith' as a chat-up line. Those that know me have known me long enough to find out that I'm a Star Wars fan but they don't stereotype me as such.

The guy that plays Jimmy Olsen in Superman Returns is in "Fanboys" and it appears that George Lucas will actually participate in the movie.
It may not suck as much as previously assumed...but it probably will.

It comes out, I think, beginning of next year -- and it's about 'Star Wars' fans. It's about these four friends who drive from Ohio to San Francisco in 1998 to steal a copy of 'Episode I The Phantom Menace (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14933#)' from the Skywalker Ranch and it's really, really funny and it's a very very emotionally powerful, believe it or not, because they're fulfilling the wish of their dying friend. And I know that sounds very cliched, but it's actually very tastefully done."

He says he plays "a car salesman who is kind of like hounding the trip. I play a guy who basically has been segregated from his fanboy friends. They've all continued on after college to remain fanboys and I've kind of gone the corporate road and work for my day at a car dealership and inherit it at the beginning of the movie (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14933#) and then it just kind of goes on after that. That's right. I rediscover my inner fanboy."

Asked how the fanboys in the film will react to Jar Jar Binks, Huntington said, "Jar Jar appears in the movie in a very very funny way that I can't reveal to you, because it's absolutely hysterical. It's one of my favorite moments in the whole movie."

He added that George Lucas does make an appearance. "Needless to say, we kiss his *** for an hour-and-a-half, he kind of had to sign off on it, you know. The extend of his... I should keep that kind of a mystery, the extent of his involvement. It's very cool. It's going to be a fun, fun movie."http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14933

I totally forgot about this movie. I was so looking forward to seeing this, but it had been delayed forever. I started Googling for some trailers and release dates and I found out that it will be coming out this spring. However, it was recut and reshot by a different director and apparently has been made into a fart joke movie about pathetic Star Wars nerds. :hurt:

This thing looked so promising and I'm disappointed of the changes that were made.

There is a site that has more info on it

That's tragic, I was really looking forward to this one after seeing clips at SDCC (I missed the panel at CIV), but these changes look to really ruin the film. Weinstein has really aimed for failure since leaving Miramax.

I'm not going to come down firmly on either side of this debate yet...I'll wait to see both versions of the film and see what my opinions are.

However, the second link (of the two I posted) of the guys who are dumping on Steven Brill make them look bad, in my opinion. I don't see anything in there proving that it's the "real" Steve Brill, it's an AOL account that could be anybody posing as Brill. Has this identity ever been confirmed?

Either way, it sounds like sour grapes from this Jek Porkins guy and his e-companions. I don't think they look good in this fight at all and they are definitely living up to the stereotype of the loser dorks that they claim the new cut of the film is making fun of.

I wasn't sold on the "cancer" storyline in the first place, so I don't have a passion for this project from the beginning. :bandit:

Also, WTF is up with the Phantom Menace connection? Don't most people hate that movie anyway? I think the timing for this movie is just awful.

I heard about this the other day, and thought "oh, that's nice". The reality is that they missed their window of opportunity on this one by screwing around with it, the director wanted it out ASAP but Weinstein first ployed him into a delay with the promise of extra budget reshoots, and then took the film away entirely. Now it's a film that will make no splash at all unfortunately. I'll still go though.

Tycho
07-14-2008, 01:03 AM
I don't understand: it was almost a fan-film that a big Hollywood guy tried to take over, alter too much, and it wound up in a legal battle and delayed?

Is that basically it? And now the big Hollywood guy gave up, ultimately after the timing became very bad?

Aaaand, Weinsteins strike back! http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/10/star-wars-tribu.html

This time, apparently it's all of the films at TWC. My guess is the writers' strike left them with a big hole in their '09 schedule and they sacrificed the last quarter of '08 to fill it. It's gonna be weird if this movie gets put out for the 10th anniversary of TPM.

Not sure if there's already a thread for this somewhere (I searched but only found a newsbot posting) but Fanboys comes out this weekend in select cities and if you're lucky enough to be near one such city I highly recommend it. I just got home from the San Francisco advanced screening and it was great. I took my fiance and while she's not quite on the same level of "Star Wars appreciation" she still thought the movie was hilarious. It's an entertaining movie with an engaging plot and it's full of Star Wars jokes, cameos, and sound effects. What could be better!

Yep, there is a thread. (http://www.sirstevesguide.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31003&highlight=Fanboys)

And yes, they were able to keep the original cancer plot, but it isn't totally the director's original edit. Kyle Newman said the final cut is a hybrid or his and the Weinstein's versions, but its also the best cut overall.

Earlier this week, TFN's Forcecast (http://theforce.net/topstory/story/ForceCast_January_31_2009_120693.asp) had an entire podcast about the movie, with director Kyle Newman, writer Ernie Cline, a few producers and cast members.

A friend of mine invited me to the showing at the Block in Orange. I laughed several times, cringed a couple, and smiled in others. A good film to pass the time, which has many inside jokes (I felt like I was the only person in the theater even chuckling in some scenes) that are decent. I'd seen very little in terms of trailers/spoilers/web shots, so it was pretty new to me (had seen the "Shatner" scene somewhere).

I'd say, if there's one showing near you, give it a try.

I'm really glad, Weinstein didn't get his way and they've been able to keep the 'cancer plot'. It would've been complete nonsense without it, basically one long poke at 'geeks'. the cancer plot not only gives the characters the essential motivation to go on a 'journey' but also gives in heart and emotional depth. Hopefully it won't be too messed with to please only the scarymovie crowd.

On the subject of fanboys, i found out someones making a documentary about some fans love/loyalty or hatred/(feelings of)betrayl towards George Lucas. And, there's a book called SW On Trial, where various people give their views on certain aspects of the films. I met the co-author (not the more famous one, of course  ) at a Comic-Con. Not as technological as a film, but a decent read nonetheless.

I've been meaning to work on something for The People vs. George Lucas for some time now. That would be cool to be included in there.

Found this this morning, the trailer for 'the people vs george lucas', pretty funny i thought, love the 'paint it Jar Jar' bit lol

I saw Fanboys tonight with a friend and really enjoyed it. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a great film or anything, but it's well done and I think really anyone from here would like it too. A complaint I would have with it is that the music is often too loud so you can barely hear the dialogue. Not a huge deal, but still. Now I'm really interested as to how this version differs from what they originally intended. Oh, and there are a few anachronisms (2002 packaging, 2005 PEZ dispensers) and the van's colors and decor kept changing back and forth, I assume due to reshoots.

I loved Seth Rogen's back tattoo. :D

It was in three Colorado theaters last weekend, so I guess two of them didn't do well (one of the theaters was just crappy, and I don't know where the other one is; I saw it at the one that's still remaining, but there were only about 10 people in the audience).

Good news!! There were some concerns whether the film would actually end up getting released on Blu-Ray or not. But according to the latest Diamond Previews (A Catalog for Comic Shops), the movie is scheduled for release on 6/23/09. No specs or further information so far, but it will be available in 1-Disc DVD, 2-Disc SE DVD, and Blu-Ray. So it sounds like hopefully we'll get some decent extras. The suggested SRP from Diamond is $39.99, but expect it much chaper in stores, since they service Comic Shops. Can't wait!!

It's coming to DVD on May 19 (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/Fanboys_On_DVD_Details_122251.asp), appropriately on the 10th anniversary of TPM.

Director Kyle Newman sent over details on the upcoming DVD release of Fanboys! See below...

FANBOYS comes to DVD on May 19th from Genius Products and The Weinstein Company.

Driven by passion, friendship and the power of the Force, four buddies hit the road in search of a galaxy far, far away in FANBOYS ... A raucous road trip comedy fueled by heart and an untainted love of the greatest movie saga of all time, FANBOYS follows a group of Star Wars fans as they hilariously attempt the impossible. Their mad plan: to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch to see Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace a full six months before its worldwide release.

The FANBOYS DVD is priced at $19.97 and comes loaded with Special Features including:

- Deleted Scenes
- Commentary with the Cast & Crew
- The Truth about Fanboys
- Star Wars Parallel
- Four Fanboys & One Fangirl
- The Choreography
- Disturbances in the Force: A Series of Webisodes

"Fanboys is still gong strong nine weeks into our limited theatrical run, and heading into international markets, but I am truly excited because now every fan will finally have the opportunity to see the film. It's a perfect release date because May 19th is also the 10 year anniversary of The Phantom Menace!"

FANBOYS stars Sam Huntington (Superman Returns), Chris Marquette (The Girl Next Door), Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury), Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up) and Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), and features cameos from Star Wars alums Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams and Ray Park, along with Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Danny Trejo, Christopher MacDonald, Jamie King, Will Forte, Craig Robinson, Ethan Suplee and William Shatner!
Hopefully somewhere in there we'll hear about how the original version was supposed to be, since I doubt they'll release it what with all the reshoots and such. Anyway, I'll definitely get it when it comes out.

I watched this today and overall, I enjoyed it. There's a decent amount of big laughs and a bigger share of chuckles. The amount of cameos and inside jokes make it pretty entertaining though. I do wish the ending was expanded quite a bit though as the transition wasn't there. I also wish that they would've tied some of the themes in the flick to the themes in the trilogy. It would've been great.

I still enjoyed it, but I wouldn't buy it or anything.

Fanboys 2? (http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/05/21/fanboys-2-attack-of-the-clones/)

Dan Fogler tells moviehole that director Kyle Newman has an idea for a Fanboys sequel that would see the characters from the first film to go on mission to crash the set of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones in Australia.

“If he could come up with the right script, and get everyone together again, I would definitely do it.”

I‘ll admit it — Fanboys is not a good movie, but I kinda enjoyed it. One thing is certain, the film should have could have easily made 15 times more than it did at the box office, but studio tinkering, release date delays, horrible marketing and a small limited 44-theater release resulted in little more than $688,000 domestically.

And Fogler suggests that if “you want to do it right,” they would need to “do it independently”, which is another way of saying “no studio in their right mind would fund a sequel to such a huge box office failure. I doubt we’ll ever see a Fanboys 2, and I don’t think the idea of transplanting the adventure to Attack of the Clones-era Australia would do that much for the story.Nice idea, but it would probably cost too much IF the story has the cast actually getting onto the set. And there ain't no way they'd ever get one of the big cast members to appear (T. Morrison maybe).
Actually now that I think about it - getting the characters onto the set would be cheap - how much could a big green screen cost?

picked up the last copy of the DVD in Walmart on Tuesday. I just wish there were outtakes or a gag reel on the DVD.

the scene that hit home for me the most was the ending with the fans waiting in line for TPM. I can remember going opening night midnight showing of ROTS and seeing the exact same thing, fans in costume, lightsaber duels, and a ton of cheering as the famous "A Long Time Ago" appeared on the big screen.
