In other news something happened today that could quite possibly have an impact on something or other with the chance of either negative or indeed positive repercussions. It's been reported elsewhere that someone made comments about this but these may or may not be true comments depending on what you believe.
An unofficial spokesperson from somewhee or other said "it just happened" which is remarkably completely opposite to reports from un named bystanders who told police that "there really wasn't much to see or hear."
Stay tuned for more if and/or when it may or may not come to that.

My hard drive crashed last week. I have spent the past few days strategically getting information off of the old one and transferring it to the new one. Thankfully I was able to retrieve all of my vital and top secret data. When I finished that task I formatted the old hard drive and it appears to be functioning 100%. Now I have over 500 gigs of storage space; I am wondering what in the world I can fill it up with, and how long it will take to do so?!?!? The possibilities are endless. :lipsrseal

Ok, my AGN modeling isn't going well. As usual (or usual for this source) the photon index, Gamma, isn't behaving. It's too steep when the source is dim. I have two thoughts on how to get around this. First is to fit the hard spectrum with the current and hopefully correct reflection model. Then freeze Gamma and use that frozen Gamma to deal with the soft X-rays. Second is to see what the time averaged photon index is, either of the total observation or of the bright and dim states separately. Then to do my fitting with one of those average values. I'll talk to my research group tomorrow and see if they like those ideas. I'm not sure I'd like to try and tease a value of Gamma out of the RGS data sets, which may be my only real option if these ideas don't pan out.

I mean, seriously, you'd have to TRY to flip a truck/trailer like that, wouldn't you? How the F'k hard is it to just keep the vehicle (ANY vehicle) inside the nice little white lines and maintain the F'ing speed limit. You'd swear that driving was harder than brain surgery some days. Morons.

My research group got our new computer this week. But installing an OS on the thing has been a giant pain for me. I run Linux boxes at school. The old version of Mandrake the other two won't run on the new computer. So I started to download SuSE 10 but had major problems with that and I realized I might not be able to run the software I need on that new of an OS. So I looked at Fedora Core. FC 5 is way too new, so I thought FC 3 or 4 would work. A day and half later I still was unable to download and burn a good copy of the either to a CD or DVD. So I tried the latest version of Mandriva. That installed, but the gcc libraries are incompatible with my software. So I back to Fedora Core 3 now. Using the new computer with Mandriva still on I've been able to download and burn I've finally got good copies of the disks to install FC 3.

Hi Caesar. I'm glad you're really interested in my endeavor. I feel like I have a fan. A single tear rolls down from my eye.

Well today I wrote 20 more pages, though it was mostly about homicides in my story.

I mean what do people do after sex anyway? Well, I think they kill each other, I decided.

Yeah. That's it.

But with both the sex and the violence, it amazes me how much I use a thesaurus to come up with new words and descriptions for these things.

I found the difference between being an author and a forums poster.

See an author has to use big words and metaphors to describe vulgar action.

A message board user, especially one on any board censored a lot less than we are here at SSG, can just use vulgarity to describe vulgarity. However it will be considered vulgarity and not art.

So I have had to find a way to describe all my would-be blunt and vulgar situations with artful wording to describe things like chopping up a dead body, slipping on the blood, fumbling the stomach which spills open with bile and food particle remnants, spilling of intestines like wet salami, that sort of thing. And the description of sex? I replace both medical terms and colloquial slang with allusions to the netherlands (uh, not the country).

It's been quite interesting.

So the above murder situation would be re-written with "the hasty division of the victim, causing (insert name) sliding on the crimson bodily fluid that flooded the corridor. Every smaller piece had to be resized to be effectively concealed. He dropped (insert name's) stomach and its contents still in the process of digestion opened onto the stone floor. 'You should've chewed all your Cheerios,' (insert name) thought before he lost the contents of his own stomach as well, disgourging himself into another one of the plastic trash recepticles he'd collected from the maintenence cart. But he did his best to not leave any trace of his own DNA at the scene of the crime, while the floor started to resemble a homicide artist's pallet as yellows from maybe the stomach bile or the bladder contents mixed with the red already available to illustrate the sense of death before him."

Re-written for message boards, it might look like this: "the fast chop-job done on the corpse spilled blood and guts everywhere. He had to dice up everything good to make it fit in the trash bags. The stomach slipped out of (insert name here) torso and popped open with a splat. 'You should've chewed all your Cheerios,' (insert name) thought before he puked himself into another plastic bag. But he did his best to not leave any trace of his own DNA at the scene of the crime, while the floor collected a bunch of sick body fluids in reds and yellows that clearly indicated someone got whacked here."

The sign of an artist seems to be to find a more creative way of saying something and taking a longer time to do it.

Interesting. Very interesting.

I mean what do people do after sex anyway? Well, I think they kill each other, I decided. You and Bret Easton Ellis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Psycho).

Tycho
02-23-2007, 03:33 AM
Thanks PlasticFetish! Ellis' work and his Bateman character in American Psycho sound extremely similar to me!

I will have to read "American Tycho" American Psycho when I have completed work on my own novel. I don't like to be influenced by anything that might distract me from my original vision.

But as a matter of fact, I admire Ellis' being so controversial he received death threats and some nations banning or at least restricting his literature. I'm not writing about Muslims, but if I could earn a Fatwah against me, it would demonstrate another way I was doing something right. (Like I said, it wouldn't be this novel though - but Christian moralists are going to gripe about it - that's for sure. And it's sort of inspiring me to think about doing a prequel for one of my best characters which would be even more politically charged and presumably distasteful to those that say they are above fantasizing about such sinful behavior).

Anyway, my story is rather very DIS-similar except for the fascination with murder scenes and the descriptives of such. I have several killers in my story as it stands (four I think - it's still a work in progress) and they all have different motivations - though for none of them is it boredom with their lives. (I think for me it is boredom with my life, so I go about killing all these fictional people) But none of my characters are serial killers per se, though at least one will have multiple victims.

My story is not actually about killing and murder - it just happens frequently enough to advance the plot and because that is what my characters are or become capable of. Actually, there's a lot of action-adventure.

But anyway, thank you for the comparison / recommendation of Bret Easton Ellis. He sounds like he could become my favorite author!

I can't start reading it until after I finish my own novel though. The less I have influencing my work, the better and more original it might turn out.

I'm having one of the best weeks of my life! One of my best friends from high school just found me on MySpace. Hopefully we can meet up before she takes off the rest of the month. Otherwise we won't be able to hook up again until April (which is looking be a very busy month).

I discovered two problems in my optical depth to column density program and am now getting the results I expected. I misread how photoionization cross section was energy dependent. And I keep forgetting 10e18 is not 10^18, but 10^19. Which means I was off be an order of magnitude.

Also in my research, I got a new version of Cloudy. That's is really great news in it's self. But I'm getting it run the way I want and give results look reasonable. Which is a huge step forward from where I was with it in November.

And finally I discovered that Xspec's mtable model doesn't really work when you want to model absorption features. But the etable model does. Unfortunately nether Cloudy or XSTAR makes etables, only atables and mtables. But I've learned how to made an etable out of a mtable. Because of that I've finally figured out why my XSTAR models have never worked before.

So with such huge boosts to my personally life and research life I'm bounce off the walls. If fact I had to a take a sleeping pill last night just to calm me down enough to go to sleep. :lipsrsealed:

I'm going to need to get my doctor to issue me more sleeping pills, LusiferSam.

I'm up and down all night and nap frequently during the day. Part of my kidney ailment is vomitting a few times a week as my body tries to rid itself of food material it can no longer handle. However, I make major progress every time I work on my book during the middle of the night and just wrote some really good scenes that I'm very satisfied with only this last night.

My post-collegiate work used to be somewhat technical (not anything like yours LusiferSam, I would say) but after kidney disease put me into frequent bedrest, it's amazing how writing a story inspired by an old dream, is so therapeutic and could possibly make me so successful.

Who'd have thought? Oh, btw, since it is historical fiction and my story is set in a location I've never been to, I have some limited research that's involved.
