ok. in ROTJ, the emperor says that lukes lightsaber is "much like your fathers" which is not true by apperance. lukes looks dangerouisly close to obi-wans from ROTS-ANH. so, lucas kinda said, in an around about way, that obi-wan was lukes dad......anyone else see my thinking?

I don't think it was meant literally...more of a comparison between Luke and his old man being a Jedi.

Interesting! :)

I think he DID mean it literally, so we chalk up another mistake to the Prequels!

And there's your answer, Hango. ;)

But, uh, how exactly is this prequel related when "your father's" lightsabers were established already in ANH (blue given by Obi to Luke) and any of the OT with Vader's red ?

I don't think the Emperor is making an Obi-Wan connection there, but it's not really clear WHAT he means, perhaps he means just that it's another hand-built lightsaber, or maybe Anakin and Luke both have sloppy workmanship and Palps recognizes that. :p It seems to be meant to further point out to Luke that he's like Vader, they both still carry lightsabers when nobody else does.

:confused:Indeed, this says nothing about the prequels. We have seen Vader's and Anakin's sabers in the OT. Thus, it would be an error in the OT. However, I don't think it was meant literally either, other than that it is a lightsaber, the weapon of a Jedi. The complete line is "Ah, yes, a Jedi's weapon. Much like your father's. By now you must know your father can never be turned from the dark side. So will it be with you." I think it is just a way draw a comparison between the two.

ok. in ROTJ, the emperor says that lukes lightsaber is "much like your fathers"So... he said it looked "much like," not... "exactly like." Don't think he really cared what the saber looked like anyway. If Luke had a banana in his hand he would have said something similar... "Ah, yes, a Jedi's banana. Much like your father's." ;)

well, i think he could have been saying "yeah. its a lightsaber. and your dad has one too. good for the both of you." butone thing i don't get about the sith is, if a lightsaber is a "jedi's weapon", then why do all the sith have them? just in case they run into a jedi or what?

Luke was a newbie Jedi (or so he thought he was) and Emps was playing on that. "I'm looking forward to completing your training."

Dont forget, Anakin was always losing his saber, so at one point he could have had one that looked similar to Lukes.

HFSith are called Dark Jedi so technically them carrying a lightsaber falls in with it being called a "Jedi's weapon"

i knew someone would say that. i always thought that a dark jedi was a jedi who has turned to the dark side, but not gone through all the sith initiation processes...etc.

as strickly to the movies, they always have red lightsabers. guess red is traditionaly a "bad guy" color....all though the x-wings have red laser fire and the death star gunners and the death star main weapon were all green...
makes you wonder...

Perhaps it's like the Steven Wright joke where he says someone pointed out that his socks didn't match. He replies that to him they were the same because he goes by thickness.

HFIt has to do with the tracer fire color of ammo used in the Vietnam war.

Sith's sabers are traditionally red but they're not mood rings, or mood sabers I should say. They don't change color based on the user's mood. A Sith can still use any color of lightsaber. Just look at Han Solo in ESB. He's not a Jedi or a Sith and he was able to use Luke's saber and it still remained blue. So, Sith usually have red sabers but they're not limited to it. I guess it's just more like a tradition or something. Like the Jedi traditionally use green and blue and Mace Windu has a purple saber and some have yellow sabers. It's just more like tradition and not a mood ring.

I'd count that one out to the fact the newly minted Vader went straight from Charlotte's office to the Temple and then Mustafar. I think he would have gotten the red saber had there been time.

To go into SW nerd mode I believe the color of the sword is based on the crystal being used.

The line about Luke's lightsaber being like his father's and the line from Empire Strikes Back about Yoda being the one who trained Obi-Wan are nonevents for me. As far as the line about the lightsaber, the Emperor is almost certainly saying, "Ah, look, the little boy wants to be like his father (Anakin Skywalker). What a coincidence, I want him to be like his father (Darth Vader) too." The Emperor barely even glanced at the 'saber before looking directly at Luke and delivering more overtones of how Luke is destined to be like his father in every way. It wouldn't have served the Emperor's purpose to say, "Wow, your 'saber looks almost exactly like Obi-Wan's. That jerk resisted until the bitter end and become more powerful than I could ever imagine when we finally managed to kill him . . . but I guess we actually fell into his trap. Boy are we stupid!"

I'd count that one out to the fact the newly minted Vader went straight from Charlotte's office to the Temple and then Mustafar. I think he would have gotten the red saber had there been time. That as may be, I was just pointing out that Sith don't ALWAYS have red sabers in the movies, there's 1 instance where it's not the case.

Also, Anakin had just become Darth Vader. He didn't really have time to build a new one.Yes, true, I was just replying to Hango's statement that the movies strictly showed Sith always using red sabers.

To go into SW nerd mode I believe the color of the sword is based on the crystal being used.It is. It also suggested to me that Jedi use their Force powers to help create the crystals, and that the colors are based on their attunement to the Force which is why bad guys always build red sabers. I think the EU has since contradicted my little hypothesis, but I still like how it sounds.
