Holy shoot, did you guys see that brawl today. AJ got decked. If Barret slugged him because he got run over, then he doesnt deserve to be playing. If words were exchanged, then maybe AJ deserved it.

Hell of an implosion by Wagner today,

1/3 IP, 2 hits, 4 BB, 1 HB and 4 ER. Very sweet of him to implode at this time.

If he doesnt pitch again his era will be 0.00 for his career if that was the first major league appearance.

That punch is what I would love to deal to some of the customers who come into my store. I get all excited everytime I see a Cubs player deck someone on the opposing team. I remember a couple years ago one of the Cubs relief pitchers tackeled and clobbered a brewers player! Good times!

Great, maybe words were said but it's not justification for slugging the guy. :crazed: They are playing a sport, afterall, so a little sportsmanship wouldn't hurt even if words were said.

If somebody walked out to the outfield to slug Barry Bonds just for being a complete prick, I'd have to agree that he had it coming...but I can't justify that behavior. Or if someone wanted to slug ARod or Johnny "I'm even uglier without the :beard: " Damon just for being Yankees, I couldn't blame them but that wouldn't make it acceptable behavior. :crazed: :crazed: :crazed:

Cubbies get swept by the Fish.

* does a little dance *

Tim Kurkjian on Mike and Mike this morning said Prior's wussing it out through some of his little injury stints is starting to hurt his reputation and that the Cubs might consider dumping off to a team in the playoff hunt before the July deadline. Twenty five and on the verge of being washed up. I'll bet somehow it's Bartman's fault.

Now they're the hotest team in the NL. Get ready for a 128-34 season! And they host the All-Star Game, too.

Predictions:
NL MVP: Jason Bay (.317 avg, 47 HR, 121 RBI)
NL Cy Young: Oliver Perez (22-8, 292 Ks, 6.78 ERA)

I knew it was bound to happen. This is where it all ends...

It wasn't a great showing against the east, but they didn't totally fold 'em, either. The win in the last game against the Yankees was well earned - they really hung in there. They had trouble with Boston too though, which wasn't my favorite... and their next 6 are against the ChiSox and Jays. They've had a good enough run - and have a bad enough division - to see this successful season right through to the end, but Leyland is going to have to keep on them. :whip:

Ok, ok, here I am. Whew! Ok, let's do this...

Suck it Wankees fans! Woo hoo! 2 of 3 ain't bad, and you all know it shoulda' been a sweep. I was at the game Fri night with my buddy Steve, who's a GD Spankees fan for some reason (yet he loves the Steelers and the Pens, but only sometimes the Pirates...GD it, I HATE frontrunners!), and it was heartbreaking to watch Tex and The Chief blow a 5-3 lead in the 8th and 9th. GD Bernie Williams, rrrrrrrrr! Anyhoo, A-Rod stunk up the place, so that was fun. Good showing of Yankees fans there too, and even they hate A-Rod.

We'll turn it around in Has-Bean Town, where even though we lost the opener, we hope to silence the most annoying sports fans on the planet.

Go Nats!

I love that the reasoning behind the name change was "no one knows where Anaheim is." WTF?

Moreno has always wanted to cut into the Dodgers' market, plain and simple. They think a stupid name change is all of the sudden going to convert people's team loyalty? Everyone knows that's what the name change is all about, and they refuse to acknowledge it, so I think the media is totally justified in ripping the name every chance they get.

And I still say Frobby could take Scioscia in the 2nd round!

Go Nats (again)!

who's a GD Spankees fan for some reason (yet he loves the Steelers and the Pens, but only sometimes the Pirates...GD it, I HATE frontrunners!), So, the frontrunners for the NHL first draft pick each year? We Pitt fans are lucky that 2/3 of those teams still play in the city, even if they tend to play poorly. But, to be fair, in the Pirates recent slide, they've been in the games, often blowing leads or losing in the 8th inning or later. Dang it!

seanmcfripp

So, the frontrunners for the NHL first draft pick each year?

Sorry, let me clarify. My buddy Steve is a Pittsburg fan (Steelers, Pens, Pirates), but he claims to have gotten a New York radio station that carried the Yankees when he was a kid, so he considers himself both a Pirates and a Yankess fan. WTF?! If you're a Pirates fan, you're supposed to hate the Yankess. In fact, you're supposed to hate everyone but your team. So that's what I meant by front runner. He's a GD frontrunner when it comes to his Wankees fandom and I hate it, and I hate fans who are like that.

While most people won't admit this, it's actually kinda fun to have your team stink it up every so often, because it makes winning all that much sweeter when they eventually have a winning season. I know it's been tough being a Pirates fan over the last, oh 25 years or so, but just think how great it'll be when they're good again.

If I decide to follow and somewhat support the Reds, a fellow NL Central team, does that make me less of a Pirates fan? No. When I say "I hate the Pirates and they can go and stuff themselves in a cupboard," then I lose face and can be berated for loss of support.

But, seanmcfripp your point about frontrunner-ship is true. While I wouldn't call it "fun" that my team's been bad for quite some time, no one can accuse me of being a band wagoner for them. Support 'em in win/loss good times and bad, salary cap sickness and health, free agent richer or poorer, 'til relocation or contraction do us part. (throw rice now) ;)

Verlander got robbed.

I can just see Ozzie Guillen sitting at his computer at 4 in the morning, all blurry eyed and high, voting over and over for Pierzynski.

The All Star game is such a racket. I know it "counts" now, but the way it's setup is pretty lame. I'm surprised Guillen is starting Kenny Rogers and not one of his dozen aces that he brought with him. Why not just bring along Frank Thomas, Sammy Sosa, Carlton Fisk and Shoeless Joe Jackson while you're at it?

All the All-Star games are "rackets," even the Pro Bowl (which has more of the players themselves selecting them). Fans vote for their favorites, not necessarily the most deserving players (i.e Ozzie Smith or Cal Ripken when better SS were in the game). But using the Ozzie and Cal examples, they were good PEOPLE, not just good players, nor flashes in the pan that'll be gone from long-term memory in a couple seasons. So I say, let the fans keep their voting privledges. I do not like the Internet voting though, because you should go to the game venues in order to vote, not the cliched imagery of underwear and comfort-of-your-own-home.

Here is a good idea to update the HR derby from Steve Czaban on his website www.czabe.com (http://www.czabe.com)

Can we all agree that the Home Run Derby is played? Honestly. And I’m not even getting into what sham Chris Berman makes of it once he opens his giant cake-crusher.
The concept is not just old, but the actual administration of the multiple rounds and such, becomes tedious by night’s end.
So here’s a solution, that’s solid gold, and I guarantee would never be attempted.
First off, make the HR derby a Team game. AL vs. NL.
You’ve got 9 on 9. Just like a batting lineup. Your best 9 guys, vs our best 9 guys. We alterate at-bats, just like a “game” and keep score of TOTAL home runs. Every “at bat” lasts until a guy gets “3 outs” (just like it does now.)
Who sets the lineup? The players! That’s who! Have the entire team sit in the dugout, and let them sort it out. Have fun with that aspect. Mic up the players and listen to them tease, goad, and cajole each other.
The fans would be into it too. Here’s why. For a paltry $1 million dollars, a corporate sponsor gets to name the event. The $1 million bucks goes to fans who are at the stadium, and hold the “winning” ticket. Half the tickets have “AL” on them, the other half “NL.”
That’s who you are rooting for. The payout could work any one of several ways. Let one fan on the “winning” team get the whole $1 million, and announce it on the stadium PA system like a lottery.
Or just give every fan $50 bucks.
How sweet would that be. You’d be cheering like mad if your “team” was down just a few HR’s, and some big stud was still sitting in the dugout, mulling whether he’s going to get in there and take some hacks.
Sounds good, right? But what about the fathead players? What’s their motivation?
Easy.
Nine gleaming black Hummer’s, tricked out to the gills, parked right along the first base line. Your team “wins” and you got in the box? Have fun with the sled.
It’s such a good idea, it hurts to think about how it’ll never happen.

Thats not a bad idea, but the giveaway kind of sucks. Work on that and it might fly. Every person getting 50 bucks kind of sucks since they pay that much for the tickets. It would be like getting in for free. Maybe have a few fans come out, picked by seatr numbers and try to hit home runs for say, 100,000 if they do and 10g for playing.

I thought last night's derby was gold. It went to the very end with no clear cut winner right out of the gate (like Abreau last year). And to top it off, someone won 500 free flights. Kinda cool, I thought.

I do, however, agree that it needs to be updated. They did a little this year by having the 1st round homers carry over into the 2nd (which makes perfect sense), but I think there needs to be a change similar to what that fella was talking about in the article JJB #2 posted. It seems very drastic, but worth a shot if even just for one year.

Anyone else got an All Star MVP prediction? I'm gonna go with Pudge.

Sad, sad. Alas, the Pittsburgh Pirates will mathematically be unable to compile a 100-win season and will have to settle for the indignity of simply a double-digit win season (only 98... :upset: ).

But hey, PNC Park looked great during the All-Star Game festivities, right? Right?

Except for in the "W" column, the loss doesn't mean anything for the Tigers since the Sox lost too.

Local papers in DC say it's almost a done deal. Tigers were next in line from what I heard. I hate to see him go, he's so much fun to watch, especially at RFK where any home run looks like a monster shot. Hopefully we'll get some good prospects in return.

Listening to Dan Patrick and ROme today, Soriano aint going anywhere yet. WS GM states the deal was far from done and the Nats want too much.

The Yanks are trying to get middle relief, Matsui will be back at the end of August so that cures the outfield issues.

Yanks got Abreu. Hmmm, I didn't know he could pitch. Or maybe Matsui or Shef will join the starting rotation when they get back. When will the Yanks ever learn: You can throw big bats a a starting pitching problem.

Overall though, throughout the leagues, seems like nobody important went anywhere.

Soriano went no where like I predicted he would(nt).

As for the Abreu trade, WTF???? Seriously, I know they would like an outfielder who can hit, so why get Abreu. You are in the hunt with what you have and Matsui is already practicing, so he is 3 weeks or so from returning. I wonder if the only way they could get Lidel was to take Abreu.

We got Craig Wilson today also from the Pirates, why I dont know.

They better get Alfonso back in the off season.

Weaver pitched another great game the other night. I'm surprised the scouting reports haven't caught up to him the way they usually do with rookie pitchers and it's quite obvious that between him and Jeff, Jered got all the good stuff.

Yanks PWN3D the BoSox. I'm not a Yankees fan, but damn that was a good series!

Detroit needs to get their heads outta their butts and step it up against Chicago this week. Losing 9 out of 12 isn't gonna win any divisions. Every team is bound to slump, so I'm not too worried about it, but they need to get things turned around quick before Chicago or Minnesota slips in the backdoor and makes Detroit chase them.

Not me, but I do have a seat on their bandwagon.... which I'm looking at selling very reasonably after that debacle.

One pair of Sox that helped "us" out today was the White Sox, who finally put a little crimp in those surging Twinkies. With the two of them pounding each other, that freed up Verlander to poop the bed yesterday, helping the Tigers to lose 2 of 3 to the Tribe. :(

To say I've been growing concerned over the last month would be a massive understatement, the Twinks and Chisox are simply not going away. Being in a Division with 3 of the 5 best teams in Baseball is exciting, but in a really infuriating way.

I tells ya what, JJB, it's a helluva lot closer than anyone thought it'd be two months ago. Thanks to the Sox recent so-so play the Tigers SHOULD have at least the Wild Card locked up.

What sucks about that? They'll probably get the Yankees in the first round. I think the Tigers could definitely beat them, but they'd have to be firing on all cylinders, with dominant pitching (Verlander, Bonderman, Rogers and Robertson in mid-July form) and HUGE bats (Pudge, Mags, Casey and Inge providing the lead for people like Granderson, Thames and Polonco). Picking up Matt Stairs' fat @$$ didn't hurt either. Whatever the case, Tiger nation has nothing to be ashamed of. It sure beats the hell out of losing 119!

Kidhuman

Ther Tigers cant beat the Yanks, the 2 games they managed to win were when Rivera wasnt able to pitch.

CaptainSolo1138
09-18-2006, 08:25 PM
Meh. The key is to get the Yankees into a position where Riveria can't be as big of a factor (i.e. Lead into the ninth). I think Mariano is a great pitcher, don't get me wrong, but he's no better than the Tigers' Todd Jones.

jjreason
09-19-2006, 06:48 AM
Rivera's human, no doubts there, and he's failed at key moments in the past (remember game 7 against Arizona in the WS a few years ago).

The Tigers are fine. We HAD a long stretch with few wins (caused by few runs), but things seem to be starting to possibly get turned around..... I hope. Our magic number for the playoffs (let's assume Minny's in) is 7 (Tigs wins plus Stinky-Sox losses), meaning if the Sox play .500 over the last 12, we only need to win one more game. With 7 games left against KC (6) and Baltimore (1), I don't foresee that being a problem.

I certainly like the way we match up against the Twins and A's better than the Yankees, but I'm sure the A's fans and Twins fans feel the same way - no one wants the Yankees in the first round. If you're gonna win the World Series though, the road goes through Brooklyn - doesn't matter to me if we get them in the first or second round.

The Tigers appear to be doing everything in their power to hand the division to the Twins. I'm absolutely appalled that they can somehow lose 2 straight to Kansas, on the exact same days the Twins happen to lose to the ChiSox. To have 1st place since May, then lose it on the last day of the season is NOT going to sit well with me....

Stop the presses! The Pirates won their 4th in a row! :Pirate:

Now they're the hotest team in the NL. Get ready for a 128-34 season! And they host the All-Star Game, too.

Predictions:
NL MVP: Jason Bay (.317 avg, 47 HR, 121 RBI)
NL Cy Young: Oliver Perez (22-8, 292 Ks, 6.78 ERA)
NL Manager of the Year: Jim Leyland
NL Crazy Talker: Bel-Cam JosSee? I was dead on! Leyland has to get the NL, ur, AL Manager of the Year nod; Bay IS the MVP (of his team? ... and if you adjust his stats per 48 minutes they're exactly right  ); and after trading Oliver Perez they got out of the cellar.

If Pitt can win today, they stay out of the lowest spot in the league, and even with a loss they'd only be tied for there. But we avoided a triple-digit loss year. Talk about silver linings... :( Hey, I won't have much else to talk about as a direct fan for some time.

John Kruk, you fat retard.

This morning he went on about what a phenominal pitcher Wang is and how he's going to dominate the Tigers. When asked about Detroit's Nate Robertson, Kruk stated that he was too young to see much success. Knowing that his fat mouth didn't make sense most of the time, two minutes of research on my behalf showed that Robertson is THREE YEARS OLDER than Wang! Instead of eating bacon grease sammichs, maybe you should look up some facts next time, Chubs.

You can't say that he's "proven" anything. He's played a third of the time that Robertson has. Saying that he's "proved" somethig is like saying Liriano belongs in the HOF because his rookie year was so good. His overall numbers are only slightly better than Robertson's, which can be attributed to playing way fewer games.

How can you joke when he pitches gems like tonight?? I called up Solo and ragged him a bit about the score when it was 3-0. He got a few minutes of pleasure when the Kitty's came back, but that didnt last long

Jeter going 5-5 was awesome. He now holds the record for 8 hits in 2 games in the post season. He shall add to that tomorrow. MVP for Jeter this year baby

Tomorrow nights game should be a good pitching match up as the stats on both pitchers are close. 1 down, 2 to go

Hows about Johan getting tagged with a huge L today. That hurts the Twinkies drastically. Thomas with 2 bombs is insane this year.

I almost rang you, KH, when the Tigers "came back", but in retrospect I'm glad I saved you another phone call when they eventually gave up the ghost. Wang (pronounced with a long 'a' sound, like it should be) pitched a pretty good game. It wasn't until they went to the pen and brought in Proctor that I felt like the Tigers had a chance (I swear, if I have to hear Joe Buck refer to the Yankees relievers as their "soft underbelly" again I'll scream! I counted him using that phrase four times last night).

We'll see how Verlander does tonight. If he can dial it in and get some run support, the series'll be tied. Hopefully he doesn't get the rookie playoff jitters.

A-Rod wont be going anywhere, if his inability to perform in the post season is a reason to get rid of him, the get rid of Giambi, Cano, Sheff, Matsui, Abreu, Damon and whoever else didnt produce. Only Jeter and Posada batted over .300 in the series. I hate people who take the medias word on everything. The guy had a great season, .280, 35 hr's, 116 RBI. Just because he won the MVP doesnt mean he can do it every year. There was apitcher(cant remember his name) who once said I dont want to win 20 games because people will expect me to do it every year. And thats what everyone wants.

I'm not sure if any of the other teams have played each other for a championship or not?

Well, now that the 4 teams are set, let's see:

Mets ('69 vs. Orioles, '73 vs. Mets, '86 vs. BoSox, '00 vs. Yanks)
Cards ('34 vs. Tigers, '82 vs. Brewers, '85 vs. Royals, '87 vs. Twins, '46 & '04 vs. BoSox, and apparently they played St. Louis in '44?)
A's (as Philly vs. Cards in '34, '72 vs. Reds, '73 vs. Mets, '74 vs. Dodgers, '88 vs. Dodgers, '89 vs. Giants, '90 vs. Reds)
Tigers ('34 vs. Cards, '84 vs. Pads)

So there are some (and I migth've missed a few, too).
