Found this site (http://www.genpets.com/index.php) online a few minutes ago and while I'm sure it's not real, I can't for the life of me figure out what the f*** this is.
The only thing I can think of is maybe it's a promotional site for a movie or something.
Does anyone know?

Dude, I looked at the page and said exactly what you typed for the topic. That thing is scary.

It's crazy. Whoever made it went all out with that site.
If it were real, I assume they'd also have photos of these things out of the package.

And I thought I figured out what they were for a sec, but upon comparison, these things look much more real...

I finally discovered exactly what these things are.

It is an art project.

The artist's page (http://www.brandejs.ca/portfolio5/gp01.php), where he documents everything about the project.
Concept art. (http://www.brandejs.ca/images/Portfolio/Genpetsconcept.htm)
The Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genpets) about it.

As an art major, I have only one thing to say about this:
Brilliant!

It's amazing. I'm suggesting he be given the grad "A" for this project, possibly even the elusive "A+" - but I don't know art so my assessment is meaningless.

That dude is one heck of a visionary. Melding art and social concept. Pure genius.

no, it's a very astute assessment - most art school projects these days lack the social commentary that was so ingrained in art in other time periods. most also lack any actual evidence of skill, so for this guy to show technical, artistic, and philosophical/sociological thought warrants quite a lot more consideration than an abstract painter that has no message.

oh, and DNA - you CAN buy one! http://www.brandejs.ca/store.php
